G3 iMac 500hz make it wireless

hello as you can see i have a Snow G3 iMac 500mhz , AEBS and powerbook g4 aluminium. I am having to move my imac to another room in the house and would like it to become wireless, but i dont have a standard airport card for it nor does apple sell this part no more...
i was hoping to use some kind of usb wireless device does anbody kno of any that will work in conjunction with my Airport Extreme basestation?? and is it possible to do so?
if so advice would be appreciated i do live in the UK so only english suppliers please.
thanks peeps

lacomputercompany.com and smalldog.com have been selling airport cards and airport card adaptors (necessary for installation in an iMac). so that's still an option.
If you don't want to go that way, stay away from USB devices. Driver support for them ranges from flaky to nonexistent.
A better option is an ethernet based wireless bridge. Linksys WET 11 or WET54, Belkin and dlink also make them. Macsense makes one that gets its power from the USB port but still uses ethernet for networking. There's probably others out there too. These ethernet based devices don't require any drivers and work independently of the OS and can eaisly connect with an airport network.

  • Can an iMac serve as a wireless access point server?

I have a current iMac with standard built in wireless capability but I'm on the net with wires (RJ45 twisted pair ethernet CAT5 cables). Can my iMac serve as a wireless access point for a new device in the house (Nintendo Wii)? Is there a setting I can turn on, or software that can be downloaded to have the iMac act as a server instead of just a client on a wireless network? I know that it's best to have dedicated hardware do this, but I'm looking for a software solution to use while I decide what to buy.
Currently I have a DSL connection and a star style home network. The DSL modem has an ethernet cable to a hub, and our 2 macs connect with wires to the hub. (I have an older DSL modem that has no wireless capability, I know that upgrading the DSL connection involves a new modem that includes wireless, but the phone company makes no guarantees about supporting Macs, so I have to do some research first.)

If your iMac connects to internet from ethernet cable, you can use airport to share the connection wirelessly by creating a network from airport, then go to system preference > sharing > internet and enable internet sharing. But if you already have a wireless router, Mac should be compatible, there is nothing inherently different between iMac's airport and PC's wireless card.
For Wii, I have no experience myself but there are plenty of posts on this forum, like this one: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=4528652&#4528652

I have acquired a  old G5 MAXC and need to make it wireless?

The majority of G5 iMacs shiped with a built-in Airport Extreme card. Started with models shipped in May 2005. To see if yours has woreless already installed, , please do "About this Mac" for your Apple menu and, in the resulting window, click the "More info.." button. That opens System Profiler.
There is a right-hand "Contents" pane; from it, select "Airport" from the "Network section. Should look like this:
If the main pane shows similar entries to the ones in the example, you have wireless capability.
If you do not have an Airport card present, they are now rather inexpensive on the used/pulled market:

Running on Lion, never had a problem before until the old airport died and I replaced it.

try connecting the device in _*recovery mode*_, then restore from your backup.
also, make sure [_*Apple Mobile Device Service*_|http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1567] is installed and started.

How do I make my wireless trackpad discoverable?

    Hello Shari BSW,
    Welcome to Apple Support Communities.
You can take a look at the Quick Start Guide:
    Magic Trackpad Quick Start Guide
    http://manuals.info.apple.com/MANUALS/1000/MA1544/en_US/Magic_Trackpad_UG.pdf
Pg 4 has instructions for pairing and removing a paring. When the Magic Trackpad is not pared with a computer, turning it on puts it into discovery mode automatically (pg 3).

  • How do I make my wireless signal sucure from others using it?

How do I make my wireless router secure, so others nearby cannot access it?

Use WPA2 encryption with a sufficiently complex password, and keep it in a location physically inaccessible to those nearby others.

How do I make my wireless router the "preferred network"?  I have to manually re-select it each time I boot up or when it comes out of standby.  This has only started to occur now that I have a new wireless router.  I want it to automatcially select my router.

Have you restarted your computer?  Repaired permissions and restarted your computer?

Depends which iMac exactly and your network setup, you can go into System Preferences and under the Sharing pane you can enable internet sharing from ethernet (or whereever you get your internet from) to Wi-Fi.

  • Router address to make my wireless secure

My wireless has never been secure. I am trying to now make it secure but I can't find the IP address or router address for my Airport Express. I have checked the manual. I have searched the web. Any ideas?

When you say that you are trying to make the wireless secure, are you saying that you need to set up security and a password for the wireless network?
If yes, you need to use the AirPort Utility application for this.
It is already on your Mac, located as follows:
Applications > Utilties > AirPort Utility

  • My first iMac should i go wireless or wired which is better

first time user for imac should i use wireless or wired which would be better

If you are close to your router, wired is always the fastest means of connection...and the most secure since there is not a radio signal being broadcast.

  • Does Linksys Make a Wireless-N Cable Modem/Router Combo

Does Linksys make a wireless-n gateway router, a combination router and cable modem?
I currently have the combo device for wireless-g but want to upgrade to wireless-n.
    Thanks!
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I think at the moment Linksys does not sell 802.11n gateways.
I generally recommend not to get combo devices but better get two separate devices, one simple modem and a wireless router.
    1. You have a far larger product choice for the router and they are usually cheaper.
    2. If the router dies you can still have internet through the modem directly. If the combo device dies you are offline.
    3. Less functions in a device makes simpler design and in average more stable and reliable devices.
    4. You can replace either device at any point. For instance, if you switch from cable to DSL or FTTH you can simple replace the modem. You may have to change the internet connection setting on the router but other then that you can keep the router. Likewise, if in two years from now you want to get the next-generation wireless router you can keep using your modem (if it is still fit for your internet speed)
    Just some to think about...

  • Ability to make external wireless?

I have a macbook pro and I have all my iTunes music on an external hard drive so as not to use up all my macbook storage space. However, it kind of defeats the point of having a labtop if I have to keep it wired down all the time. If I get an airport express, can I plug in the hard drive to the USB port to make it wireless, or does that only work for wireless printing?

I have heard mixed reviews about the airport extreem and the time capsule. From my research I've found that they tend to go belly-up after 2 months. However I've only heard good things about the older version of the airport extreem (the one shaped like a flying saucer)
What are the suggestions on that?

Keynote ('09) can export your presentation as a QuickTime video, and from Share menu you can also send it to YouTube.

    Hi Melissa,
    Pretty strange, but...
Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, does it happen in Safe Mode? Reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
