G3 imac HD found using firewire target - NOW WHAT?

I finally can see my HD in my G3-600 imac. Had the folder at startup and tried all methods to see the HD. I can now finally see it using FW target. I used Diskwarrior on it and copied all contents off of it. Tried starting up but still same folder at startup. NOW WHAT? Do I reformat? Is it the controller? Any help would be appreciated.

Robb 1,
Well you got the info off so that's good. Were you able to graph the drive? any flaws?
If it looks good you should probably reformat it and check SMART to see if it's ok.
Then if all's well you could reinstall your OS but be aware it went bad before so it would be suspect as far as I'm concerned.

I've found an iPhone 5c, now what?
I can't access it, and it's not activated, so I can't make a call, or see any information about it, or get contacts.
    Now what?

Why? Trying to find the owner.
The IMEI is printed on the device. Quick web search found the carrier. Quick phone call to carrier found the previous owner's record. Didn't take long, just can't seem to get a message to the owner. Working with local officer now who's off duty.
Why waste tax money to find the owner?

You need to ask Apple to reset your security questions; this can be done by clicking here and picking a method, or if your country isn't listed, filling out and submitting this form.
They wouldn't be security questions if they could be bypassed without Apple verifying your identity.

  • IMac G4/800 in FireWire Target Disk Mode shuts down, hard drive hopeless?

I have found myself in possession of a 12 year-old iMac G4/800. The machine looks stock and was nice and full of dust when I took it apart, so I'm going to assume nothing has been upgraded on it. The person who the computer belongs to has had issues booting the machine and when it does boot, the machine will throw up the "grey screen of death" after a few seconds, I suspect when the hard drive starts to get hit.
I've attempted to start the machine in FireWire Target Disk Mode and the machine will mount on my 2011 MacBook Pro, however once I begin to copy files the machine will abruptly shut off.
I have also attempted to remove the hard drive from the machine and connect it to my MacBook Pro via an OWC Drive Adapter, but it won't mount from the adapter in Disk Utility, Terminal or Disk Warrior. I've connected other (non-IDE) drives with the adapter before, but no luck with this one. Perhaps the IDE connector is faulty on the adapter?
I may look for another drive adapter and I've made an Apple Genius app't for later this afternoon, but I'm curious if anyone has any further advice. Is it more likely that it's a motherboard issue that's causing the machine to shut of in FTDM or a hard drive issue? In any case, this may be one for the Data Rescue Experts. I imagine I may get a few looks at the Apple store with such an old machine.

Another contributory issue to booting in an older PPC Mac is the PRAM battery.
If the battery is more than four years old, it would likely be a partial cause of odd
startup issues and some settings that are required for the computer to start &
run correctly would not be available. The battery is a 3.6V. 1/2AA Lithium cell.

A few companies such as macsales.com show them on their web site... sounds
like your old iMac G4 800MHz could use one. Note there are takeapart instruction
pages online such as one from XLR8Yourmac from years ago. The 800MHz is
similar to the later models with faster G4 processors of the same appearance.
The hard drive type utilized is the older ATA/IDE or PATA; uses older formatting.
Tools, thermal paste, and some other tedious details need to be attended to...

Sometimes the power supplies and other components can be the cause of issues
in these iMac G4 models, you can test the power output by using the test ports
that are located in the same compartment as the upgrade RAM slot & wi-fi card.
You may be able to find a copy of an original Apple service manual for that iMac.
Those are harder to get, and used to be available to Apple trained technicians.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Migration freezes at 3.2 gig, using firewire target drive or USB HD

I fell down the stairs while carrying my Powerbook. Screen bashed, case bent. Bought new Macbook Pro and tried to use firewire to migrate files, system always hangs when I get to about 3.2 gig. This is while using migration manager, or target drive and drag/drop. Then removed HD from old laptop and connected with USB external drive enclosure. Same exact problem. What gives? I can copy smaller folders, and I will do that if there is not a fix for this. Any ideas?
BTW, it does not matter what folder I copy, it always freezes at about 3.3 gig and locks up the finder. Thanks!
Macbook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    Thank you everybody.
I just tried to copy from that HD via USB to another Mac, a 2 year old Imac with OS 10 whatever (non Intel). The really weird thing is that it also locked up at 3.24 gb; exacty the same as with the other computer. And exactly the same as if I copied another folder that was over 3.24 gig. So, 3.24 gig is magic number here.
I am almost sure that the 3.24 gig was the same spot where the trnasfer would lock when I was using target mode and firewire while this drive was still in the old broken Powerbook.
    Any thoughts?
BTW, I am not a computer expert, just a Mac user for work and home applications.
    Thanks again!

  • No firewire, so now what?

I used to use firewire for backing up one laptop HD to the other and vice versa, and it was extremely fast. Does anyone know what's the fastest route to transfer files now that firewire is out of the picture on my new aluminum Macbook? Thanks.

  • My MacPro OS 10.6.8 cannot connect to my wireless HP Officejet 6500APlus printer. It sees internet modem. Hp went thru all it's procedures, including new uploaded Driver. Utilitie tool found no issues. Now what?

I just switched internet provider and ran into this: My MacPro OS 10.6.8, recognizes the modem, as does my HP Officejet 6500A Plus wireless printer, but the computer doesn't "see" the printer. HP tried all its procedures, Mac Utility Disk repair was used without resolving the blind spot. Can you help? Now what?

If you just changed Routers, it is quite possible the Printer is holding onto its old IP Address, which is no longer in the smae subnet and not visible from the rest of your equipment.
You need to know what the IP Address of the printer is. Some HP printers will show you on a front panel, some can print it on a test page.

  • Suuuuuper slow iMac!  Ran etrecheck... now what?

I have an early 2009 Mac that has always been really reliable, until it was turned over to a certain family member for their main use.  I needed to use it today, and discovered it was running really really slow - even just minimizing a window takes a full minute to accomplish.  Even to get "about this mac" window to open takes several minutes.  I asked this person what they had been doing with it - apparently they have downloaded all sorts of pirated movies, audio and goodness knows what else onto it.  I'm furious, and trying to find whatever is causing the problem(s) and get it(them) cleaned off.
I found some other threads here where people complained of similar issues, so I followed the steps that were advised to them.  There is plenty of memory free, and I ran both verify permissions and verify disk and both of those came up with no errors.  I saw another thread that advised running etrecheck to get a list of whatever is on this Mac for diagnostic purposes.  It has been about thirty minutes, and etrecheck is still stuck at "checking kernel extensions".  The little wheel at the bottom of the window is spinning, indicating that it's still processing, but I don't know if the computer is just too infected to continue or what.
Any suggestions?  I appreciate any help I can get.

Back up all data to at least two different storage devices, if you haven't already done so. One backup is not enough to be safe. The backups can be made with Time Machine or with Disk Utility. Preferably both.
Erase and install OS X. This operation will destroy all data on the startup volume, so you had be better be sure of the backups. If you upgraded from an older version of OS X, you'll need the Apple ID and password that you used, so make a note of those before you begin.
When you restart, you'll be prompted to go through the initial setup process in Setup Assistant. That’s when you transfer the data from a backup.
Select only users and Computer & Network Settings in the Setup Assistant dialog—not Applications or Other files and folders. Don't transfer the Guest account, if it was enabled.
    After that, run Software Update.
If the problem is resolved after the clean installation, reinstall third-party software selectively. I can only suggest general guidelines. Self-contained applications that install into the Applications folder by drag-and-drop or download from the App Store are usually safe. Anything that comes packaged as an installer or that prompts for an administrator password is suspect, and you must test thoroughly after reinstalling each such item to make sure you haven't restored the problem.
I strongly recommend that you never reinstall commercial "security" products or "utilities," nor any software that changes the user interface or the behavior of built-in applications such as Safari. If you do that, the problem is likely to recur.
Before installing any software, ask yourself the question: "Am I sure I know how to uninstall this without having to wipe the volume again?" If the answer is "no," stop.
Never install any third-party software unless you know how to uninstall it.

  • My springboard crashed moving from old 3Gs to new (but used) 4.  Now what??

I recently got a new phone from my new work- the iphone 4. It was previously owned by a co-worker and still had all his info on the phone. I activated it with at&t but didn't have my old phone for them to do a data transfer/backup. They gave instructions and it seemed really straight forward.
I followed their steps to backup and then data transfer all my songs, apps, calendar, etc. All seemed fine until the new 4 turned said "Springboard" had crashed. It entered safety mode too. My contacts transfered but not my apps. Everything of the new old owners is still on there.
I wanted to try again but it won't respond to iTunes - I think because it is in safety mode. I had my 3Gs for almost 3 years but I'm completely unfamiliar with "Springboard" and safety mode.
What do I do now?? I would like to avoid going to the at&t store as the wait it forever.
Also, I don't have iCloud yet- I don't know if this makes a difference backing things up but I really don't have money to get Lion yet.

He had moved the iTunes Music folder to an external drive
    Bummer.
Copy the entire \Music\iTunes\ folder to the external.
Plug it in to the new computer.
    Hold Option and launch iTunes.
Select *Choose library* then select the *iTunes library* file in the iTunes folder on the external.

  • HT3728 trying to re set my Mac with everything from my time capsule. Seeing message "no volumes found in backup" .  now what should I do? ??

Message says No volumes found in backup.   What are "volumes"?  What to do? ??

I did not figure it out.  Took my computer and time machine to the Apple store, they agreed that it would be hard for me to restore on my own (I'd lost contacts).  Can't remember all the details, and I still don't know where several addresses have gone (maybe I de-duped in too much haste).  I'm glad I leave near a store/Genius bar - don't know what I'd do otherwise.

Apparently, something happened on Jan 1 that stopped my time machine backups from happening. I get an error that sparsebundle is already in use and that's why it won't work. No idea what this means since I only use Time Capsule for these backups. I don't see any options that would help here in the Preferences section. Any suggestions?

  • Booting from firewire target mode on a mac pro with  kernel panic?

    hello
i am wondering if it is possible to use firewire target mode to boot a mac pro that has never got past a multi language kernel panic on boot?
basically i have tried all the other options and cant get it to open the superdrive to insert my installation disk, as to repair the drivers with my snow leopard disk.
i've tried holding my mouse key down, the paperclip option on the drive itself and the firmware keycombo, so my idea is that the only way to fix it is with target mode. can this be done - and if so - could someone direct me towards a tutorial that will help me do this.
please advise if this is possible or if there is another method i should use? apart from taking it to the applestore (extreme last ditch option) i am quite low on ideas here.
    many thanks!
    p.s heres the message i wrote for the original problem which caused all the kernel panics;
"i recently bought a mac pro and upon starting it for the first time opted to transfer the all the data i could over via firewire from my macbook pro.
i used the standard 't' command with the firewire symbol.
Somewhere towards the end of the transfer (I am not sure at what pont - I wasnt there for all of it) - , the monitor went blank and the whole thing was unresponsive. my macbook's firewire sign continued to move around the screen.
after leaving it for some time i decided to turn off the macbook and then the mac pro.
i restarted the macbook and got some pretty crazy stuff happening to my calender - but so far everything seems to be fine.
i am more concerned about the "you need to restart your computer" message; this is the dreaded 'kernel panic' right?. i have never actually done anything with this computer yet, and it was purchased new."

"i recently bought a mac pro and upon starting it for the first time opted to transfer the all the data i could over via firewire from my macbook pro.
Never opt to transfer until you have insured it works fine for a couple days, I would never use Setup or Migration Assistant until such time, and I would have a bootable backup clone.
Try pulling all the hard drives from inside your Mac Pro and boot from OS X DVD - latest OS build.

  • Using firewire to install Classic 9.2.2

I had the instructions for transferring Classic from one Mac to another using a firewire cable, but lost them. I remember setting up 1 computer in target mode, but can't figure out the rest. I want to transfer Classic from my miniMac to a new G4 iBook. Would appreciate directions.
    iBook   Mac OS X (10.4)

    Hi, Anne -
Using Firewire Target Disk Mode, the hard drive on the Target machine will appear as if it were an external firewire hard drive on the Host machine. Files can then be copied from one drive to the other normally.
Article #58583 - Firewire Target Disk Mode
Unless you have a specific need to replicate an exact duplicate of the Mac Mini's Classic on the new G4 iBook, you may be better off using the disks that came with the iBook to install Classic. One of these Apple KBase articles may help in doing that, depending what OS came on your iBook -
