G3 iMac internet/modem problems

My parents have an older G3 iMac with 10.4.11. They have DSL through AT&T and the built in ethernet is set up to use PPPoE. The internet at the house worked just fine until I tried to help them out and set up a dlink wireless n router to work with other wireless devices in the house. After going through the whole configuration process the internet would not work through the wireless router, I worked with it for a long time, then gave up and decided to reconnect the modem alone. Now I am getting error messages that "your network settings have been changed by another application" which I have remedied through advice from other posts, but the PPPoE will not connect. It will connect on my laptop, but I have messed something up with the iMac.
Any ideas what I can do to get the computer to recognize the modem again and connect to the internet?
I am no mac genius so if any of this doesn't make sense or needs clarification please let me know!

Have you updated your Apple software using Software Update? Do you routinely let the daily, weekly, and monthly system maintenance tasks run? Do you update your third party software? How do you connect to the internet and what ISP?

  • Imac internet connection problem (says connected, won't load any website)

I cant begin to express the incredible amount of frustration I have had with trying to get a fully loaded Imac 2011 connected to the internet.  I am currently residing in Dakar Senegal, using Sonatel Orange as a service.
I am on a network where EVERY SINGLE piece of gear connected to it works 100%, including my ipad, cell phone, Asus PC. I have no connection issues and as of now typing this message on the very same network that the IMAC appears to have a problem.
I have called tech support and they walked me through several steps which resolved nothing so I am hoping the community can help me.
Whether I connect to my router directly with an ethernet cable, or use the wireless to connect, it give me green lights, says its connected to the isp but not to the internet.  Obviously the internet works on this network or I would not be sending this message from my PC.
DNS was the same as the router and the same as the one on my PC.  I even tried 8.8.8.8 and that did not resolve the issue.  Like I said it says connected to the ISP but the internet and server lights are red on the IMAC diagnostic tool.  Everytime I try to connect the IMAC to the internet via the router via wireless or the ethernet cable, It does nothing, and actually I have to reboot the router to get it to work for the PC or any other device.  Its as if the IMAC does something to the router and requires a reboot to reset it.
IT is DHCP enabled, thus not a PPPOE connection.
If I cannot get this resolved, I will be boxing up a $2500 machine and sending it back to apple.  I cannot believe that I buy a practically fully loaded apple for the first time, and cant connect to the internet.  I will go back to PCs and not look back if this does not get resolved.  2500 bucks is WAY to much to have internet connection issues.

Sorry to hear about your connection problem, you have a great computer but sometimes small things can cause a major problem.  Did you check your firewall, make sure it is not blocking traffic.  Click on system preference>security & privacy then click the firewall tab.  If it is on then turn it off and see if you can connect. I would also reset the SMC   As a last check open your network utility and take a look at the status of your network card and link status.

  • I am having problems reestablishing my Time Capsule.  I had to get a new internet modem and that seemed to screw up my Time Capsule.  The amber light keeps blinking and it's not being picked up when my Macbook scans or when my PC scans for the wireless ne

I can't find my Time Capsule on my networks anymore.  It's like it doesn't exist. We got hit by a storm and that might have caused our internet modem from ATT to fry.  I replaced the modem today but now my Time Capsule isnt working.  It's blinking amber.  The PC its connected to through the ATT modem isn't finding it as it scans and its not in utilities.  My MacBook isn't finding the time capsule either when it scans.  Whenever I hooked up all the wires to the time capsule and the modem, the internet stops working.  I've tried resetting the time capsule but it's still blinking.  I had all my computer equipment on a power surge protector. A pretty good one.  All my other equipment is fine.  The ATT modem was old, so I thought it might not have even been the lightening.  Nothing else in home was injured by storm.  I am freaking out and need help!!!  I can't use my MACbook to do my internet work and all my files were backed up on the time capsule.
Another problem. My Time Machine isn't backing up now either.  What is up with that?
I would be soooo grateful if someone can help me!  Thanks a million!

A PC can have more issues connecting than a Mac.
But it really should not matter.. so just try it in situ.. press and hold the reset.. once it starts up, it will return to default IP, 10.0.1.1 the PC should then be able to find it via the airport utility.
If not drag it over to the Mac and plug in there by ethernet.. or since it is a laptop, really should not be that difficult to drag the Laptop and plug it into the TC.
Important thing is to get access to the TC.
The Mac if it is running lion, then you MUST download and install 5.6 airport utility to do anything useful.

  • I have a BTHub4 - My iMac, iPhone, and children's iPads all connect to the internet no problem. I cannot get my 2 MacBook Pros or my partners MacBook Air to connect. Have tried diagnostics - says to change DNS but  it is correct.

I have a BTHub4 - My iMac, iPhone, and children's iPads all connect to the internet no problem. I cannot get my 2 MacBook Pros or my partners MacBook Air to connect. Have tried diagnostics - says to change DNS but  it is correct. I have re-set both router and all laptops - no joy. They can all see the network but cannot connect.

This is extraordinary. I have moved the router and also tried resetting it to its factory strings.  We have had this router for over a year and all our devices have always worked. Now all four laptops will not connect to the internet. Only one oMac and our phones and iPad.
I have had far more devices running at once before but now all laptops are timing out on connection. Some say this iIP address is already being used but if I manually set to a slightly different IP address it does not help, noir if I manually set to the correct IP address. Why would all our laptops (four) suddenly be unable to connect?

  • If I have my iMac internet sharing turned on, the Airport Utility won't recognize the Airport Express I want to use to stream iTunes to my stereo.  When I turn the iMac internet sharing off, the Airport Express appears but calls itself a base station.

If I have my iMac internet sharing turned on, the Airport Utility won't recognize the Airport Express I want to use to stream iTunes to my stereo.  When I turn the iMac internet sharing off, the Airport Express appears but calls itself a base station.  I just bought the Airport Express and it's not clear how I should set up my System Preferences for Sharing.  Thx

Yes. Unfortunately the stereo is too far from the wired ethernet connection   My iMac is connected to the internet using an ethernet cable from the DSL modem (plugged into the wall, not wireless).  The Airport Express is plugged into an outlet 25' away from the iMac and connected to my speakers.  I've turned on the iMac Airport wireless Internet Sharing, hoping to stream iTunes to the Express connected to the stereo.  The iMac Airport picks up several neighborhood networks so I know it's working (and I connected my iPhone wifi to it just to check as well).
When I use Airport Utility to set up the Express, the only time Utility recognizes the Express is when the iMac Airport is off.  When I turn on the iMac Airport, the Airport Utility immediately loses the Express and asks to rescan.
Maybe that explains my problem better.

  • Imac internet sharing ethernet - time capsule - wireless client use imac

    hi all,
i have the following setup in mind:
a g5 imac with 3g modem attached and internet sharing (3g/ethernet) switched on. with an ethernet cable it is connected to a time capsule. through the wireless option of the time capsule i want to be able to use the imacs internet sharing with two macbooks - its not working ....
imac: g5, no wireless, os 10.5
    macbook: wireless, os 10.4
    macbook pro: wireless, os 10.6
what went wrong? how to set up the time capsule to allow the internet sharing coming from a wired mac to wireless clients macbooks?
or is this not working at all???

If you configure your Mac to share an ethernet internet connection over AirPort, your G-devices should have no problem connecting. We do it here with iPods and an iPhone, they are G.
    My Mac mini is connected to the internet by Ethernet cable to my ISP's Arris gateway. I am sharing the Ethernet connection to two iPod Touches and an iPhone via AirPort from my Mac mini. This is how I configured the Mac to share the connection;
    1. In Sys Prefs/Sharing I highlighted Internet Sharing (do not check the box)
    2. Share your connection from: Ethernet (from the dropdown menu)
    3. To computers using: AirPort (check the little box)
    4. Press the button AirPort Options...
    5. Name your Network
    6. I use Automatic for the channel
    7. I encrypt my network using a 40-bit WEP key
    8. *For a non-Apple device you must use only a 5 alphanumeric character, 40-bit WEP password or only a 13 alphanumeric character 128-bit WEP password*
    9. Press OK
    10. Check the box for Internet Sharing
    11. Answer any dialog boxes that pop up

  • The airport extreme is connected to internet modem but the connection is glitchy

The connection is being all weird  when I couldn't access the internet and that usually remains for about a couple minutes before it starts working again but then the problem comes back every 15 minutes or so. I've tried restoring it to the factory setting and setting everything up again but it still has the same problem. I don't understand what's wrong with it and it must be the airport extreme since when i connect my macbook to the modem with through the ethernet cable it works perfectly. It happens on not only my macbook but also my iphone 5 and imac. This problem is starting to **** me off when the internet dies every few minutes. Anyone know whats wrong with it?

There are lots of us out there with the same query.Apple can't supply the answer it seems Two ipad in our house with same server ,one fineand the other has the same problem that you have.
DId you contact someone at Apple?

  • Airport Internet Sharing Problem  Mini - PC Laptop

    Airport Internet Sharing Problem
    My setup is:
Cable Modem -> Mac Mini --> PC Laptop
... with the connection between the mac mini and the PC laptop being the built-in mac mini airport using internet sharing.
Hi, I've been trying to set up Airport internet sharing with the mini, to no avail. It works off & on, but invariably the internet connections drop after about 10 minutes. The only way to get it started again, is to go into internet sharing, turn off internet sharing, then turn it on again. It will work for another 10 minutes or so (slow) after gong back to the PC laptop and reconnecting, then it chokes again.
I've tried the connection both with & without WEP, same behavior. I read somewhere that OS X only plays well with using Channel 1, so I tried that. No luck. Tried with and without Interference Robustness, no luck.
Tried with WEP on and using 40 bit hex keys using a "$" prepend in the mac as suggested on this web page:
    http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20030803030354585
Same behavior, works for 10 minutes, then it chokes again.
Tried with & without the firewall.
Yes, personal web sharing is on.
The PC laptop works fine with any number of other wireless routers out & about town, at my girlfriend's house, so forth.
Any chance I have a bum mac mini wireless card or antennae or something? The reception strength on the PC laptop is good.
Just don't know what to make of it. So stupid, it seems like something pretty basic that ought to work.
Yeah yeah tell me to get a wireless router, but I'm not going to do that, that's one major reason I bought the mini in the first place and it would be nice if it worked as advertised.
    Any other suggestions?

    Works better now...
this is me again. A week ago or so, I noticed there was an automatic update to the wireless on the mac mini.
Since then the performance is much improved. My PC laptop connection to the mac mini no longer drops spontaneously.
Much improved! Thank you very much!
Yes, on occasion, when I leave and then come back to use the wireless, the laptop will not reconnect after multiple attempts; I have to turn of internet sharing and flick it back on again, but then it works all evening fore hours and hours straight with no problems.
    Thanks Apple! It's usable now!

  • When our iPad is in use on the internet, my iMac internet connection goes off. I can't get the two devices to work at the same time with the AirPort Express. Is there a setting somewhere I may have missed?

When our iPad is in use on the internet, my iMac internet connection goes off. I can't get the two devices to work at the same time with the AirPort Express. Is there a setting somewhere I may have missed?

When two or more devices conflict it typically means that the DHCP service is either misconfigured or is not running at all. DHCP provides IP addresses to local network clients.
Is your AirPort Express base station the only router in your current network configuration? That is, is it connected directly to an Internet modem and not to another router upstream of it?

  • Frozen iMac with Network problems

I have a 21.5 inch iMac purchased around Nov'12. Three days ago, suddenly no web page could be opened. I thought it to be a problem of my router but when I found out that I was able to use the Internet perfectly from my MacBook, I restarted my iMac but the problem remained. I shut it down & then restarted it... Now it showed only a white screen with the Apple logo on it and the waiting symbol. This remained till hours until I got irritated and switched off the power supply. I switched on the next consecutive days but the problem persisted. Today fortunately my iMac started.. The home screen has come... It is able to recognise my wifi & Ethernet but does not open any web page. Going to system preferences and then to Networks is hanging the system preferences window. When I force quit it, it says to file a report to Apple.... But the problem doesn't get solved... I always believed Apple as a company whose products never hanged up or faced hardware or software issues!!!

    Hello,
    If 10.7.0 or later...
Bootup holding CMD+r, or the Option/alt key to boot from the Restore partition & use Disk Utility from there to Repair the Disk, then Repair Permissions, reboot.
If you still have problems, this has worked for a few...
Make a New Location, Using network locations in Mac OS X ...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2712
    10.7 & 10.8…
System Preferences>Network, top of window>Locations>Edit Locations, little plus icon, give it a name.
    10.5.x/10.6.x/10.7.x instructions...
System Preferences>Network, click on the little gear at the bottom next to the + & - icons, (unlock lock first if locked), choose Set Service Order.
The interface that connects to the Internet should be dragged to the top of the list.
    10.4 instructions...
Is that Interface dragged to the top of Network>Show:>Network Port Configurations.
    If using Wifi/Airport...
Instead of joining your Network from the list, click the WiFi icon at the top, and click join other network. Fill in everything as needed.
For 10.5/10.6/10.7/10.8, System Preferences>Network, unlock the lock if need be, highlight the Interface you use to connect to Internet, click on the advanced button, click on the DNS tab, click on the little plus icon, then add these numbers...

    208.67.220.220
    Click OK.

  • "Internet Mail - Problem during delivery processing" email received

Every email I'm receiving as of this morning is accompanied by an email from [email protected], entitled "Internet Mail - Problem during delivery processing"
Is this an issue on the Mac server side or a problem with my Mail app?
    Many thanks in advance.

My Wife and I both have an Ipad and an iPhone, I use an iMac and my wife a MacBook Pro.
I have this problem with all my devices.
My wife has NOT got this problem.
We both use a [email protected] email acount.
    Just compared the settings:
For "Incoming server" I have p03-imap.mail.me.com
My Wife has p02-imap.mail.me.com .... and has not got this problem.
I have setup a new rule for incoming mails (for the meantime):
move all incoming emails from [email protected] to trash and delete it.
Works fine for now,......until APPLE deals with the problem.

  • Bluetooth Internet Modem (BT PAN)

    Hi,
I have a HTC Touch Dual (T-Mobile/MDA Touch Plus) in the UK and have Web&Walk all set up on it. However much I've tried, search for answer, I still cannot use the phone for bluetooth pan/internet modem on my brand new macbook. (I was able to do it on my iBook, different phone) It was supposed to be easy, just connect internet sharing and it would work, but it's never that simple.
I can connect the two through Windows Mobile 6.1's internet sharing and bluetooth (but only for sharing files). I also have MissingSync if that makes any difference.
I have downloaded Ross Barkman's modem script for Windows Mobiles, (GSM 3.6M) and a application for Bluetooth DUN. Without the bluetooth dun app, when I set up the HTC with my mac will not 'see' the phone's dial up network, I've heard WM6 developers removed bluetooth pan drivers thus the need for app. Don't know why ones pan ones dun.
It automatically sets up it's own modem in network preferences which offers 'configuration, telephone number, account name and password'. I have also tried to configure similar settings through Bluetooth Pan, Bluetooth and PPPoE.
    In network preferences menu:
Several forums use T-Mobile Internet as name, (hash)99* as telephone number, 'guest' as user name and password.
This did not work. I also tried 'general.t-mobile.uk' as the telephone number and 'user', 'wap' as the user name and password respectively.
I also unchecked all the relevant boxes in advanced menu and changed the settings to use Ross's script.
I have also opened new port in the bluetooth phone and edited the serial port in bluetooth settings to show the modem.
But however I try it will not connect to the internet through the phone (turning off airport doesn't help) I always get messages such as 'no carrier detected. Please check phone line connection and try again.'
It could be my mac, it could be the app, the wrong script but it's just not working. I have a hunch it's the settings (either user name, password or telephone number).
It would be better if I could try another Pan application to see thats the problem, but I cannot find any others to download.
I've tried to be as specific as possible, anyone who has this phone on T-mobile (in the UK), has connected the mac to the internet through it and would like to compare settings would be a lifesaver.
    Cheers Ben

I was looking for exact the other way for connection, so I tapped into this Thread. I got a HTC Diamond (from O2 Germany) and got the direction you are looking for pretty easily up and working.
Here is what I did for that direction (Internet sharing using HTC Diamond as modem):
    1. Build the partnership between the HTC and the Mac (10.5)
    2. In the Bluetooth Icon (on the Top bar of MacOSX) you should see your device
    3. There should be at least two items shown if you mouse-select this device. One should be "Connect with Network" (or something similar - in German - Mit Netzwerk verbinden)
    4. This shows that your PDA (HTC) provides Bluetooth-PAN as Service
    5. On the PDA look in your Programs. I have an applicaiton called "Internet Sharing"
    6. In this Application I select "Bluetooth-PAN" as PC-Connection and select my Connection Profile (depends on your provider)
    7. Press on the "Connect" at the lower left corner
    8. Select "Connect with Network" on your Mac in the Bluetooth-Icon in the Menu-Bar under your device
You should now see on your PDA in the Internet-Sharing Application that the connection is established.
Maybe that this helps (even when I'm pretty late here).
    Cheers
    Jochen

  • Internet modem hangups

My internet modem continually hangs up. After a year and 3 times in the shop, plus modem being replaced, as well as MLB and Ram, and software reinstalled, it is still doing this. A new phone line was put in. An Apple Consultant said it could be caused by a weird electrical problem in the area. I need help!
    tiger   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

Any rhythm to it? How long does it usually go? Have
you tried the other Drivers like v34, or v92?
Are you aware of the settings to make the Modem hang
up after such & such time of non-use?
Yes, I know about the settings to make the modem hang up after a certain time of non use.
It just hangs up when it wants to; sometimes it will be over a minute when trying to open mail, sometimes less; even safari does not always open in a certain length of time, so I know what is going to happen - modem problems again. I'm not computer savy,so don't know anything about other drivers. I will, however, do some checking into that. My computer was bought at COMPUSA and they are the ones who have been trying to solve the problem. One thing that the Apple Consultant did was loan me a Belkin Battery backup/surge protector, which really helped. I just can't see that something like that should be used to solve a problem with a brand new computer.

  • CS-15 Modem Problem

    Hello,
I/ve a problem with CS-15 internet modem. I cannot create a profile under windows 7 (32bit). Everything runs well, instalation and so on. I open options/profiles then click 'new', select operator and then I cannot cilck 'OK'. There is also a small text 'Profile read only'. Of course without profile modem doesn't connect to internet 'Missing profile'.
On the other hand, everything runs very well on another laptop with windows XP - the program itselfs creates a profile, I only have to click connect after instalation.
I tried almost everything - reinstall new soft, tapisrv and other.
       Did anyone get thru this?
        Thanks
          Tomasz

Well I have little different problem, with Nokia cs-15 and the network provider is DNA in Finland,
Neither does Nokia nor DNA is willing to help, those idiots just telling me to replace my brand new computer from win 7, 64 bit processor to something else like 32 bit or vista or like that, but they do not want to solve the problem.
Nokia, DNA and finnish people are IMPOTENT when it comes to problem solving, even in police and immigration i face so much problem and now being summer, forget about it, for 3 months, no body will be there in any of the government or private offices, you basically have to face curfew in finland, in summer. nothing gets done. and in winter, they are sad and depressed and drunk and in summer they take vacation for 3 months.
    unreal.
