G3 Powerbook (firewire)- Going from OS 9.0.2 to OS 10.3

Hello All,
I have the old black G3 500 Mhz Powerbook (firewire). It has OS 9.0.2 installed on it. I would like to install OS 10.3.
What do I have to do?
I just downloaded firmware update 4.1.8. (I have a feeling I'll have to upgrade to Mac OS 9.2 before installing, is this right?)
Any advice/info is greatly appreciated.

You will need to upgrade to OS 9.1 in order to install the firmware update. You can download the 9.1 updater here: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=75103. You will also find updaters to 9.2.2 at Apple's download site. You will need OS 9.1 or higher if you plan to use the OS X Classic emulation and/or be able to switch booting between OS 9 and OS X.
To install OS X you will have to purchase a retail version of OS X. You will also have to be sure you meet the hardware requirements for installing OS X:
1. For Panther (10.3.x) you need at least 128 MBs of installed RAM. For Tiger (10.4.x) you need at least 256 MBs of installed RAM. I would recommend not less than 512 MBs of RAM for any version of OS X.
2. At least 6 GBs of free space on the hard drive. The hard drive must also be formatted Mac OS Extended for OS X. I would recommend at least 15 GBs of hard drive space as a minimum need for OS X.
3. You must install the firmware update before installing OS X.
Because Panther is no longer the current version of OS X you will need to look to third-party sources to buy it. You can find copies at various sources such as eBay, MacSales.com, MacGurus.com, SmallDog.com, and AppleRescue.com. Be sure you get the standard retail installer package. The original Panther package included four CDs and a User Guide. Three of the CDs had black labels with a large gray "X". The fourth CD was the XCode Tools Installer. You can purchase Tiger directly from Apple either online or from a local Apple retailer.

Going From G4s to Duo 2 Core Questions

I'm going from 2 G4's to Duo 2 Cores (shipment to arrive early next week). Three questions to those who have already done it, to avoid problems:
1) I will import my data from the G4s to the new Macs via Target Disk Mode (no Migration to avoid bringing something over that might muck up the works).
Which computer should I boot into Target Disk Mode - the source (G4) or destination (Duo 2 Core)?
Should I boot into Target Disk Mode and then firewire connect, or firewire connect and then boot into TDM?
2) I currently use Office X (Word and Entourage) as my data staple; am upgrading with the purchase of the Duo 2 Cores to Office 2004.
How do I get my Office X Word and Entourage preferences (Normal Template; Address Book, etc) into Office 2004 once 2004 is loaded? Should I install the 2004 appliication onto the Duo 2 Cores, then copy over my Microsoft User Date from Office X (from the G4's to the new computers), then launch Office 2004 on the new computers and somehow import my prefernces; if so, how? If not, what's the best procedure?
3) I use Firefox as my main browser. I do a lot of public records research. Most public records are in PDF format. I currently use the PDF Browser Plug-in (private edition) for viewing. Is that a safe option for Intel Macs? If not, any alternatives suggested?
Lots of questions, but thanks in advance for any input and assistance!

1) I connected my new MacBook to my turned of PowerBook while the MacBook was on. Then I turned on the PowerBook booting into FireWire Target Disk Mode. BTW, I copied Library folder from my PowerBook onto the MacBook's desktop. The rest I just copied directly into my new MacBook personal directory. IOW I opened up both Document folders and copied from PowerBook to MacBook. I was more careful about what I copied from the old Library folder and I did just a little at a time so if trouble developed I could remember what I'd just copied in and remove it. This minimized the number of programs I had to reserialize and configure.
2) This is a good question - I bought MacOffice and used it with the PowerBook. I don't remember the process of moving in - whether it was done automatically or whether I was prompted for where to import files from. I just remember it being pretty painless. Perhaps the safest method would be to install Office on the old G4 first and get it all sorted out there first.
3) There's an Intel updated version of the plug-in available - I'm using it.

Hi, and Welcome to the Forums..
Ok, since you already did a PRAM reset and that didn't resolve the problem.. there is ONE LAST step before we can say it is or could be the logic board.. Do a PMU reset. This is a hard reset where you would have to do the following:
A full (PMU) reset of the Pismo (Apple calls it a 'PowerBook (FireWire)') follows: If the computer is on, turn it off. Press and release the reset button located on the rear panel of the computer between the external video and modem ports. Wait 5 seconds. Press the Power button to restart the computer.
If and only if you do this and the problem is not resolved, either you will need the Apple Hardware Test which came packaged with the Pismo or you will need MacTest Pro also called: Apple Service Diagnostic to do further diagnostic checking on the Pismo's ethernet port.
Try the PMU reset above and report back.. Try to then plug in an ethernet cable and see if u can get any response from it. If not, I would suggest getting the AHT or MTP from someone.. Actually, if you email me I might be able to further assist as I DO have the tools to make your Pismo work again, hopefullly assuming its not a logic board issue.

Battery going from 70% to 0% in seconds.

I've been having a problem lately with my PowerBook going from a decent battery capacity to zero. Usually I am watching something on YouTube or another video. I've had my battery settings at "Better Energy Savings". I got a new battery during the recall...could it be my battery is on the fritz? My computer is working just fine save for the battery issue.

There have been issues with the recall batteries not lasting a long time. One sign of a lithium battery on it's last legs is when it drops to zero without warning. Typically this happens below 50%, however, as opposed to yours dropping from 70%. You might try contacting either Apple support or your local Apple store to see if they would replace the battery.

IBook G4 goes from 40% and goes to sleep without warning

Whenever I have my iBook G4 on battery power, at about 40% it just suddenly goes to sleep without warning. I can't wake it up until it is back on the charger but the light on the front right below where the trackpad is goes from bright to dim. The apple is not lit up however. I don't know what to do... if I should go to the Apple store or if I should just get a new battery. My computer is about two years old and has done for as long as I remember. I don't know what to do, but I also don't want to screw anything up or erase anything by accident. Any advice would be appreicated.

I can see if we can get your phone back on! I understand how important it is to have a phone. Have you tried this to see if we can get it back on? http://vz.to/1DZhteH . If it is still goes to a red Verizon screen and then to black we might need to do a master reset. While the phone is off try this:http://vz.to/1DZhXkU Be mindful this is the last resort because it will erase everything on the phone. We people want to capture the Mini-DV file directly through the 1394 firewire card from the sony camcorder in to the MPEG2
format. Thent on the fly(i.e.during capturing into MPEG2) we also want to capture the metadata i.e (time,date etc. of the
original shooting event) into some text file. Our MPEG2 format requirements are: 8mbps viedeo,freq-48KHz,16 bit sterio,384
audio kbps, Deinterlace... we are using JavaMediaFramework-2.1.1e(Java Media Studio tool)..so we want to explore that tool
much more coz rightnow it's not supporting MPEG2(only supporting MPEG1) and also not supporting 1394 cpture card ...we want
the codec for converting DV-AVI to MPEG2 with date and time exctrated and much more explored details about JMf2.1.1 JavaMedia

Made a jar out of it and name it jmf.jar
Replaced that with current jmf.jar (kept a backup)
Opened JMFRegistry and in "Plugins","Codec" and now unable to add " "
this becoz i am not knowing the exact way of recopiling that newly created jar file and because of that that mpeg-2 codedc is
not get added .....so i am looking forward for any help for the above mentioned problem!

Data not going from active data table to new data table -DSO activation iss

Data is going from DSO1 to DSO2. I see some of the records are getting missed in DSO 2 which are supposed to come.
There is start routine from DSO1 TO DSO2 and as per the start routine some records should come but they are getting missed.
Apart from that..to DSO 2 there are 4 other DSO sending data.

Please help me out as this is very irritating. This has been happening for the last 20-30 minutes. It had roughly half battery left.

Try:
- iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
- Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode
How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings
- If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
- Try another cable
- Try on another computer
- If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

That is the highest you will be able to go with 3g. You need 3gs or 4 to go any higher (multi processors and more memory needed). Version 4.2.1 marks the end of your updates for that device.

Welcome to the Apple Community.
Yes you can probably delete the 2 incomplete back ups they are unlikely to work.
However, I'd be inclined to back up to a computer as well and restore from there, if you are changing your phone.

You need to copy 2 files, key3.db and signons.sqlite, from the old [[profiles|profile folder]] to the profile folder on the new computer.
