G3 refuses to boot from cd

I have tried 2 bootable CDs in my (beige) G3, one is Ubuntu Linux, the other is Gentoo Linux. I have tried just letting it boot with the CD in, i have tried going into the startup disks control panel, but the CDs appear grayed-out, I have tried holding in C, CMD-OPT-SHIFT-DEL, OPT. Nothing seems to work. Mac OS recognizes the CD and can read the files, there is even a folder called "boot" on the CDs that has a happy mac icon on it, i've tried copying that folder to the HD, but nothing works.
Beige Power Mac
96 MB RAM
233Mhz
4GB HD
How can I boot CDs?

The All-in-One G3 has its works in a drawer. The motherboard is identical to the one used in the other two models, but will be the rev B or C.
You remove the about two retaining screws on the back and examine it closely. There is an indentation like a drawer handle, because that is exactly what it is, a drawer about 8 inches tall. Pull straight back and the drawer slides out at least six inches. The motherboard is completely accessible, the Hard Drive is on a shelf below, and the floppy and CD are on the front of the drawer. The entire drawer can be removed from the unit by disconnecting four cables and lifting up slightly on the frontmost part of the drawer to release the locking slides.
If you need to get inside to the Power Supply or CRT (which is extremely hazardous, even with the power off) remove the bottom front cover (with speaker grilles) and four large screws will be revealed. Removing these (and the two screws under caps at the top front) will allow the removal of the entire top and side shell as a unit. But this does not get you access to the motherboard, memory, or drives.
Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger is not supported by Apple on any of the beige G3s. Nor is Mac OS X 10.3 Panther. To install these versions, you need a small Helper Application on your Hard drive, installed by a Utility called XPostFacto. My understanding is that these other UNIX variants use a very similar method to install. Their disks will also be installable -- once you get the right Helper Application onto your Hard Drive. You will need to study their directions.

  • Adobe on Leopard, refuses to boot from disc, disaster?

After buying Adobe CS3 Web Premium, I found out I couldn't install it because my drive was formatted as case-sensitive. So, I was forced to backup all my important data and re-initialize. I zeroed the drive, but told it to skip zeroing just before it was done with the last little sliver in the progress bar.
So, I get all the whole system updated. Install Aperture, Thunderbird, Firefox... everything is going great. Then get the updates for Aperture, everything works flawlessly. I had never seen it run so well. Then I finally install CS3 and the install process seems to go without a hitch.
So, I've got CS3 on there, but I want to do some stuff with Aperture before I get into it. I'm working with Aperture and everything is going great. Good performance, really speedy. Then, I decide to open Illustrator CS3. To my horror, Aperture starts to go completely wrong. It gets to the point where I can't use it for longer than 30 seconds without having it crash. So, I quit Illustrator and the problem persists. Finally, I decide to restart the machine, Aperture seems to have fixed itself with restart, everything seems to be alright, for now.
Hmm, I think, maybe the CS3 needs to be updated. Yes, it did, 524 MB of updates. The installer downloads it all, starts the updating process and hangs silently (liquid in the progress bar still flowing). I get no notification except in Activity Monitor, where launchd and another process (I forget which) are going crazy with the CPU. I force-quit the updater from Activity Monitor, reopen it, press the install button again. It doesn't do anything, so I found out I actually have to say "Delete All" as in, delete all the downloaded updates. Then the updater quits itself and I have to reopen it and redownload and install whatever the installer thinks didn't get updated. I had to force quit, delete all, redownload, and install about 5 times before it said it was through.
Oh man, that was bad. Now the whole machine is pretty much a sluggish mess. Naturally, I thought, "I'll run Disk Warrior." I had run it with an earlier version of Leopard before, so I expected it to work. Insert Disk Warrior, Restart, hold C key, disc spins for a second and ejects itself. System ignores my command and boots from hard drive.
But everything loads and things seem alright, so I think, "oh well, I guess everything is alright." I do some work in Illustrator, everything seems good. Listening to music, but not working in Aperture. The machine works great for about 2 days. Then, I decided I want to install Final Cut - I put in the Install DVD, it spins for a second and spins back down, nothing happens. No desktop icon, no optical drive showing up in Disk Utility, Eject button on keyboard doesn't work, iTunes - control > Eject Disc, now my iTunes is hung. I try to force quit, nothing happens. Force quit dialog, iTunes is listed as if it hasn't crashed, click force quit, it remains in the list. iTunes icon remains in the dock, arrow still below, but does nothing when I click it and won't poof. iTunes doesn't show up in Activity Monitor.
Okay, "definitely gonna try Disk Warrior again," I think to myself. Restart, reset PRAM twice, hold option to boot select screen, press eject to remove FCE disc, insert Disk Warrior, Disk Warrior icon shows up on screen, click it, click the arrow to boot to it. Wait a second - BSOD, no cursor! Disc spins for a while and stops. Press any key, it spins back up again and eventually dies down again, doing nothing. Forced shutdown holding power button, press power again, hold the C key to boot to disc. Disk Warrior spins up again and spits itself out, just as before. System boots to hard drive instead.
What am I doing wrong? The Mac Pros at school run Leopard and CS3 and they seem to be flawless. Am I the only one having these problems? I can't figure out if this is hardware or software. I'm currently creating an image of the Disk Warrior disc. I plan to restore it to my hard drive's second partition and see what happens. I'll let you know what happens. Until then, can anybody give me any hints on what might be wrong with my system or at least give me some sympathy? LOL. This is beyond frustrating.
I'd had my system ignore what seemed like successful insertion of optical discs and refuse to eject them before the fresh install, but I've never had it refuse to boot from a bootable disc like this. Any ideas?

Excuse me, it seems there is some data in the CrashReporter log for VersionCueCS3. I had forgotten to remove my search filter keyword.

  • G5 refuses to boot from external hard drive......

I have tried 3 different external firewire hard drive setups & it refuses to boot from any of them. This is extremely disturbing, because my trusty old G4 never had any issues like this. The latest one I tried is a Seagate enclosure (model # ST3500630AS), which is a Firewire external/SATA internal setup. The other one I have tried is my trusty old Kanguru S-80.0 (KU-35/81) - it has since been upgraded to a 120 GB drive internally. The third one I tried is a brand new Ultra enclosure (USB 2.0/Firewire 400) - the model# is ULT31310. This makes absolutely no sense. It will start to boot, but then it either gives me circle with a diagonal line through it or the Apple comes up & it just sits there (the fans will rev up after about a minute of sitting there). I cannot believe that 3 different firewire chipsets are not supported by the G5 for boot. If anyone has any ideas as to what is causing this problem, please let me know (It isn't a huge deal, as I can always yank the SATA backup drive & reinstall it into the G5 in an emergency, but I should be able to do it from an external drive). Any input will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Did you reformat them to Mac Extended?
Did you install or clone the software onto the drive? what did you use?
Have you looked at OWC's FW cases? never had problem on my G4 or Mac Pro with their FW800 and 400 cases (all Oxford 911-912-924 which are mac friendly).
The Oxford 924 is FW800/400/USB2/SATA and accepts SATA drives.
    http://www.macsales.com
    You are getting kernel panics.
I avoid vendor cases. Most support PCs fine, but weak on Macs (even WD MyBook Pro).
One article today on Maxtor One Touch, older series, was that it would force a drive to 28-bit LBA mode, didn't support large 48-bit, and write to the drive's firmware. Again, avoid these vendor "solutions."
If you set it up and format it in Disk Utility, making sure to select Partition -> Options... APL format table, it should work. Other format types won't work.
Then use SuperDuper or Disk Utility to clone the drive (making sure that "ignore ownership" is OFF (not selected) in the Get Info for the drive volume.
I've got 8 FW cases from OWC and never had a problem with any.

  • Satellite NB10t-A-101 refuses to boot from any external medium

I have just purchased an NB10t in the UK, and am trying to boot to a bootable USB
I have noticed the BIOS on this particular model is UEFI mode only, That in itself is not an issue as users can sign their own OS's with a CA and use them, however this laptop refuses to boot from any external medium...or even provide an error message.
I have changed the boot priorities in the BIOS and moved the USB to the top
I have disabled Secure Boot option in the BIOS
I have tried all 3 USB ports as well as 3 different drives (NOTE: THESE WORK FINE ON 3 OTHER SYSTEMS a dell laptop/desktop and an acer laptop)
I have also tried various distributions (Debian & Arch)
I have used multiple installation methods (Unetbootin/Full hard install/Rufus etc..)
I have tried all versions of your currently released BIOSs (Shipping with V1.0, Jan-V1.1 Feb-V1.2)
After trying all of these when pressing F12 at boot, the boot menu shows up but upon selecting a device the system continues to boot into the HDD (Win8)
After googling around I noticed you have released 2 BIOS updates I have tried all versions of these and still the system refuses to boot into my selected device
Can we expect any more firmware updates in the near future? Is there a way to workaround this issue to boot my chosen OS? Is there a CSM option?
    Edit: Punctuation
    null

Hi sorry about the multiple threads guys, the forums have been behaving a bit buggy over the past few days (anyone seen all the duplicates in the main satellite section?)
    Onto my problem,
Just to make it clear to joselu90 I'm not trying to install or "reinstall" windows 8 or anything, I would like to install a Linux distro if possible
I have been doing as much reading as possible about the bay-trail architecture etc
    In response to Tonny
+"This new Intel Bay Trail technology support only the UEFI capable devices and systems (Win 8, Win 8.1)"+
There are many Linux distro's capable of UEFI booting but some guidance on navigating toshiba's system would be very helpful
All I'm left with is this question that, "it should be possible to put another OS on this laptop" Or have Microsoft and Intel truly "jumped into bed with each other", so-to-speak and made it impossible to use any other software than their own? (I can't believe that to be the case) and we know for a fact that many Linux distributions support UEFI
    Thanks for your time,
P.S I have not marked this question as answered yet..

  • X-Serve refuses to boot from HDD

    Hi!
Short version: We have an X-serve, a later Xeon but not the latest that for some reason refuses to boot from any internal HDD both original Apple branded 80GBs and newer ones that works fine in other X-Serves we have.
    Full:
The X-Serve was delivered with 10.5 but in order to use the OD with some other servers  that runs on 10.6  I took out the org drive and put in a newer 750GB drive that we use in the other X-Serves and some MacPros with no problems.
This problematic X-Serve boots happily on the OS-X Server installer DVD. I format/partition the 750GB drive and installs 10.6 server on it. After installation and reboot it refuses to boot from the newly installed HDD.
I initially thought that the PRAM battery was out but If try  bless -- info  running on the installer DVD it correctly indentify the 750 drive and blessed system folder.  I can also set it and the machine sets and reads the bless info.  I can put in a cloned system drive (80GB original Apple HDD) from another identical X-Serve and it refuses to boot from it even if bless again reports a correct path and folder to the cloned 80GB drive.
I have also tried to install a 10.5 server system from the very DVD that the server was delivered with without luck.
Left to do is to install a new system on USB drive/stick or FW drive. But to be able to use the machine in production we cannot rely on external HDD of course.
So I'm open to suggestions and ideas – what can I do to get it up and running booting on HDD?
Could it still be a battery issue?
    Regards, Per Mattsson

I would be trying to boot off an external FW or USB drive as you mentioned, as a troubleshooting measure. If you can, use an external drive enclosure and install one of the drives from an internal drive carrier into that enclosure. I have seen drive carriers go bad, or it could be something more serious like logic board issue.

  • Laptop simply refuses to boot from CD

    Hey,
I currently have a Toshiba Satellite L670D-13F laptop in my custody. I'm attempting to completely format the harddrive so I can install a fresh version of Windows. I did initially try using the on-board recovery system to try and get it back to factory but for some reason after the recovery process finished and the laptop restarted it won't get past one of the welcome screens.
Regardless of this background info the bigger issue is trying to get the machine to boot from a disc. I try selecting this both manually in the bios and by tapping the relevant F-key on start up but it's almost as if the laptop doesn't even bother and continues straight ahead with booting from the harddrive instead.
Am I missing a trick here? Surely there must be a way for the machine to boot from disc!
Any help appreciated - if I need to provide any further info just ask and I'll throw it up.
    Thanks.

Does the CD/DVD drive work to play movies or music?  In explorer does the player show up when it has a disc in it?

  • MBP Refuses to boot from Install CD/TTP etc.

I need to repair a couple of disk issues that my MBP has. Unfortunately, every time I try to boot from the Install CD or TechTool Pro CD it spits it out after a round 30 seconds. I can't create an eDrive with TTP because the source volume has an issue, so I can't repair the machine. I'm stuck in a loop. Restarting holding C doesn't work, restarting selecting the CD as the startup disk also doe snot work, neither does running the install app on the OSX Install CD that came with it and allowing it to restart.
This machine has been a dog from day one - So many problems. I hate to think that now I have to take it back AGAIN to get a new Superdrive. I did notice very poor playback and patchy recognition of a couple of DVD's I got the other day - May point to a bad drive?

Well, it looks like it just started working! I post on here, and it fixed it! Bizarre.... Just kept trying. I think I'll get it checked out all the same - It should be doing it consistently, not requiring endless restarts.

  • Toshiba tecra a11-17c refusing to boot from LAN

    Hello
I am working on a Toshiba tecra a11-17c. We currently have about 18 of the same laptop and the person who originally built the computers has left the office we are currently working at.
The issue I am have is that I  want to boot the computer from lan and do a windows 7 installation on the laptop but I keep getting the error "Media test failure, check cable"
I know the cable is working because I was able to build a Toshiba satellite pro l20 perfectly fine
The other Toshiba tecra a11-17c laptops have the same issue when trying to rebuild them too
I am fully able to log into a Toshiba tecra a11-17c and connect to the internet via the same network cable and port when in windows.
I have also tried to swap the hard drive with a different tecra a11-17c but it just kept getting a blue screen as soon as the windows flag appeared.
I then tried a format of the hard drive and a reset to default of the bios settings as suggested in a different forum.
I then tried to clone a fully working hard drive from a different fully working tecra a11-17c and it just dose the blue screen as stated above.
I then used an old windows XP recovery disk for the tecra a11-17c it did the build fine no issues then when it came to build to windows but as stated above it just dose a blue screen the same as windows 7.
Now I have no idea what to do but to believe it is something Toshiba has done with the tecra a11-17c range because its the same issue for all 18 of the tecra a11-17c laptops I have here.
Any way I am at a loss and have no idea what to do it seems to be something as simple as the network card need to be turned on during the boot phase but I can not find anything in the bios.

I'm sorry but I have no experience doing what your attempting to do.  However, for your information, this site is for U.S. models only and I would suggest you also post in the appropriate regional Toshiba Support forum to get better suggestions.  Good luck

  • Ibook refuses to boot from install disks

    Greetings,
I purchased my G4 1.2GHZ ibook second hand about 4 months ago and haven't had any problems until yesterday.
While at school I attempted to open Word and my computer froze after about 30 seconds and I had to push the power button to shut it down. I was able to get back into my mac and tried to open pages, but the ibook once again froze and I had to push the button to manually shut down my mac.
I tried once again to get back into my ibook, but this time the mac did not attempt to load the OS, but simply went to a blue screen and hangs there without doing anything. Repeated attempts to get back in met with the same blue screen.
I didn't use my mac for about 2 hours, I went to the school library to see if I could find anything on the net. I found out you can reboot the mac so I tried that and I was able to get past the blue screen...went back to class happy only to find that it would turn on, but would freeze even if I wasn't using word processing programs.
I tried a variety of trouble shooting methods such as such as the fsck check, resetting the ram, removing the battery that I found on the website. I finally got fed up and just decided to do a clean install....my mac made it almost to the very end and then decided to freeze. I can't access my hard drive through pressing the option button at start up anymore (I'm guessing my botched re-install attempt did this) and the computer continues to freeze after anywhere from about 2 minutes of use, all the way up to about 40 minutes of use. I used the hardware check disk that came with the software package prior to attempting a reinstall and it reported no problems with any of my hardware.
I'm using a G4 1.2GHZ ibook, I'm guessing the OS is X 10.4 (that's what came in the software package), 256 ram (I think, I know it's the minimum amount). I don't use any third party hardware, I did download mozilla and vlc player, however my ibook has been running them fine for about 3 months. I haven't downloaded anything new to the mac and I was using it a few days prior to yesterday without any incident.
Does anyone have any clue as to what could be happening or how to resolve my issue? Any help would be most appreciated.

    ChrisB08 wrote:
    Thanks for replying
I guess RAM would be better (and cheaper) than a HD replacement?
In your case, unfortunately, not. Those 256MB in your iBook are soldered, and therefore, they're not replaceable (at least not by the user).
You should check the console log and system log thru Console (located in Applications/Utilities), and see if that reveals some info about the system malfunction.
Also, if you can boot the machine from an external HD (PowerPC Macs require a FireWire bootable external HD), and the system doesn't freeze, it will show the internal HD as the cause of the failure. If it doesn't prevent the system from freezing, then the RAM, logic board or some other hardware component will be faulty.

  • IMac G3 Rev.A refuses to boot from an OS 9 installation CD.

My iMac has first got Mac OS 9.0 on it.
Then I just swapped in a new HD and installed Jaguar.
After that I realised that I need OS 9 to run in classic mode, so I put in my OS 9.0.4 CD and booted it holding down the C key. Doesn't work. Tried selecting the startup disk. No use.
I really need OS 9 for my iMac, please help me.
*note: My Performa 6320 managed to boot it, but found a "system error occered".

Is the CD white with a big orange "9" on it, or is it a grey system disk from another model of computer.? If the latter, the disk may not be compatible with a 1gen iMac, especially if it is for a much later model. I'm having the same problem.
I bought a macbook pro 13inch 2.3 ghz core i5 base model yesterday. I gave it the normal windows partition as i normally do with all my macs and tried to install Win7.
The installation was ok except that it took the macbook pro like 40 seconds to finish showing the Black screen with the blinking cursor .
I then Installed Bootcamp 3.2 and restarted, it took its normal 40 secs to show the black screen and blinking cursor after i had selected windows to boot and then it restarted!
I tried 4-6 times but it keeps giving me the same result.
I then reformatted 4 times both the Windows and Mac partitions and tried to repeat the windows installation but it kept giving me the same result.
A friend of mine bought his macbook pro 13 base model today and when i tried installing, it gives the same result! What is wrong?
I then installed Parallels 6 on both laptops and immediately it booted the already installed windows partition.(*but i don't want to use parallels )
But when i restart and hold down the option key and choose windows, it keeps giving me the black screen with the blinking cursor and the restarts itself.
I have used 10 or more macbook pros and airs in the past and they've never given me this sort of problem.
    What is wrong???

Having Windows on GPT and EFI; not having default OS set to Windows.
Having boot options in msconfig set to default (30 seconds) instead of reducing to 5 seconds (if present, it may not be).
40 seconds is slightly longer I guess for you than OS X but people with trouble are reporting 1-4 minutes. I think 40 is in normal range.

  • IMac G3 REFUSES to boot from any cd.

Okay, so as some of you may recall from my last post, I've a misbehaving iMac G3 on my hands... I have:
A Mac OS 9.2.2 installation disc (Genuine, retail)
A Mac OS 10.4 installation cd pack (Of four cds, retail, genuine)
Two PowerPC release editions of linux: Xubuntu 6.06 and 8.04
All of which I've tried, but to no success...
Feel free to request as much detail as you like. I have a camera so I may be able to video log it if you'd like... In fact, I think I will.

  • Probook 6560b refuses to boot from media created in HPQFlash

    Hello.
Since my old SSD-drive died Corsair gave me a new USB 3.0 SSD, wich my current F04-BIOS dosen't support.
So'm trying to upgrade to F40 to get the 3.0-support but no suck luck.
After I created the bootable usb-stick my proobook just says "remove media and reboot".
I even tried to download the F22-version wich was the first one with the 3.0-support, but the installer wouldn't even run on my other pc.
    Suggestions?
    Ps.
The flashdrive is a Kingston Datatraveler 112 16GB.

  • G4 won't boot from any Linux disc I put in it and c key no longer boots cd

I have a G4 Powermac (sawtooth, DVD drive, 512 MB RAM, 30 GB HDD) which has started refusing to boot from any Ububtu discs I have all of a sudden.
I'll be more specific. I've previously been able to boot from Ubuntu 6 cds (originals from shipit, not burnt) as well as Ubuntu 7 (burnt disc). I haven't made any changes to the system that should stop it booting from them. Currently installed on the hard disc is System 9 and Puma. It is still booting ok from my System 9, Puma, Panther and Tiger discs; but when trying to boot from my ubuntu discs (I've tried all of them to eliminate the possibility of a stuffed disc) the screen goes black for a second as if it is starting to boot, but then it kicks me to the flashing folder screen you get when it can't find a startup disc. Oddly enough the background colour of this screen isn't grey like usual. It's orange. I've never seen that before. If I leave it sitting at this screen after about 30 seconds or so it starts up from the hard disc on its own.
Another odd thing: the c key no longer forces the machine to boot from the cd when held on power up. This is extremely odd, as holding down option brings up the startup disc selector, and cmdopt+shiftdel also works. I've tried everything I can think of. Used a different keyboard, reset the NVRAM (by cmdopt+pr and my manually going into open firmware and doing a "reset-nvram" and "reset-all"). I've tried the PMU reset switch on the logic board. I've tried using different drives. In all cases it still refuses to boot from cd when holding c.
I don't think that the mac refusing to boot while holding the c key is coincidental. I believe that whatever the issue is that's causing this issue is what is also causing the mac from not booting any Ubuntu discs. It's a very strange problem and upon searching around, it seems this doesn't seem to have happened to anyone else before. Any advice will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

    Hi, yoshi -
I just have to be rush to get the cd in the drive and then to hit cmdshift+optdelete before it's too late...
You should also be able to use Startup Manager to choose the CD as the boot volume -
Article #HT1310 - Startup Manager: How to Select a Startup Volume
A feature not discussed in that article -
Once Startup Manager has loaded, if the CD is not in the drive you can press Command-. (Command-periodkey) to open the drive - this should work even if another disk is already in the drive. Insert the disk you want to use, close the tray, wait a few seconds for the disk to spin up and get recognized, then click the circular arrow icon on the left - this forces a rescan of the available drives, which should result in an icon of the new disk appearing in the array. Click it to select it and then click the straight arrow icon on the right (or press Return).

  • Hard drive crash in G4 - won't boot from 2nd hard drive

    Hi,
My G4 has 3 internal hard drives: 2 on the ATA bus and one on a SCSI card. The main drive crashed yesterday. At least I assume it crashed: the first error was not being able to store a CD imported into iTunes, followed by a system crash and a request to restart. On restart it failed to boot, showing a floppy icon with a ? and repeatedly beeps twice. In an attempt to fix this I booted from my OS X software install CD and installed OS X on other ATA hard drive, however it refuses to boot from the second drive and shows a broken folder icon and is still doing the double beep thing. All suggestions gratefully received!
    Thanks,
    Andy

I do indeed. Here's what happened when I ran the extended test:
No Airport present. Logic board, mass storage and RAM all passed. I couldn't see if the modem test completed, but somewhere between the end of that and the video RAM test the screen was filled with a multi-coloured grid. Eventually there was a default catch:
    code=300, %SRR0: 00000020, %SRR1:00081010
with the option of mac-boot or shut-down.
mac-boot also caused a default catch:
    code=900, %SRR0: 01c10ffc, %SRR1:00003030
mac-boot then brought an alternate happy mac / folder with a ?
A reboot from there finally brings up the broken folder. All of these icons are very small OS9 style icons in the centre of the screen.
    Phew!
Bearing in mind your suggestion about a blown stick, I have tried a swapping out each stick (1x512, 1x256) and rebooting with the same results. I also tried them in different slots and that made no difference either.
    Blown video RAM perhaps?
