  • A Few Newbie 10.8 Server Questions...

    Hi All,
A few quick newbie 10.8 Server questions:
    1) Airport Extreme - I currently have an Airport Extreme attached to one of my workstations which is serving as my main router with a dedicated IP. I'm just in testing mode with my new server and wondering if I need to do anything to the Airport's configuration to make it work with the Server? Does the Server need to administer the functions of the AirportExtreme? Or is it ok to leave it attached to the workstation? Or does it not make any difference?
    2) Automount Shared Folder/Drive - I would like my users (who are mostly using MacBookPros with they take home and bring back to work) to be able to Automount our shared data drive when they come in to work. I read the help section regarding AutoMount, but it a) referred to using ServerAdmin, which I understand has been eliminated from 10.8 (dont know why they are still referring to it in the help!) and b) it talks about AutoMounting Home Folders, but not shared Drives/Folders.
    3) Firewall - I have a static IP and want my users to be able to connect using VPN. I am buying a SSL for the domain. Wondering if the combination of the built in firewall, plus the SSL, plus the built in VPN is secure enough, or should I be investing in a solution such as the SonicWall TZ100.
    Thank you !!!!!

The Server app is not required to manage your airport.
The server app can automatically open ports for you, so it makes life easier for a home-server-administrator.
Continue managing your Airport or whatever NAT router you prefer any way you choose.
    2) Automount Shared Folder/Drive - I would like my users (who are mostly using MacBookPros with they take home and bring back to work) to be able to Automount our shared data drive when they come in to work. You can drag a mounted sharepoint to the right-side of a user's dock.
It will then remember the sharepoint, and its 1-click to open it when needed,
This is my preference with laptops.
You can also add the sharepoint to your user's login items (on their workstations, System Prefs, UsersGroups/, User, Login Items - I don't like to do this with laptops because it causes a login delay when they aren't in the locaiton of the sharepoint.
    Either method is simple.
I even use Safari bookmarks to get people to a server. Go to the addressbar and type:   afp://[email protected]   (with your real IP) then bookmark it. You can also drag that that URL to the desktop to have a location file which will ALSO take you to the server.
So Lots of ways...  Depends on users/environment.
If you aren't going to have anything except for VPN open to the public, then you won't need SSL.
VPN, but nature, is already encrypted and does not use SSL.
If you will run Mail, Web, Calendar, Contacts, etc and don't want to requires users to VPN, then you should use SSL.
TIP: Fromt the start, use a fqdn for your server. Don't use a .private or something fictitious.
If you own mydomain.com, then setup myserver.mydomain.com and make it your server's hostoname from the get-go.
Later, you'll be glad you used a proper FQDN

  • QT Broadcasting through media server question

    Hey all,
My question is this: does anyone know how (if its even possible) to use QT Broadcaster on MANUAL UNICAST to webcast to users connecting to a media server?
    for instance: G5 ---> media server <----user
    <----user
    <----user etc.
I have been trying to set up the webcast as such: creating a manual unicast .sdp with the IP address of the media server contained within. upload the .sdp to the media server where the users will find it and connect to the stream.
So far, all I get on the client side is a QT window that says, "Live Broadcast" and "ready".
If the clients connect to the stream through the media server (which has its own static IP that matches the one in the .sdp) shouldn't they be able to view the webcast?
Any and all thoughts are most appreciated.

    [email protected]

    Using Manual Unicast:
Manual unicast is a method of broadcasting that requires you to export an SDP file from QuickTime Broadcaster to one receiving computer identified by its IP address. The receiving application can be a single QuickTime Player or QuickTime Streaming Server or Darwin Streaming Server. If the receiving application is QTSS or DSS, the broadcast is reflected and no longer limited to a single IP address.
    To broadcast via Manual Unicast:
If necessary, click Show Details in the QuickTime Broadcaster window, and in the Network pane choose a preset.
Choose Manual Unicast from the Transmission pop-up menu, and enter the IP address of the receiving computer (or accept the default IP address of your own computer if broadcasting to yourself as a test), the audio port and video port numbers (or accept the defaults if broadcasting one-to-one), and the buffer delay (or accept the default).
If desired, also enter information in the Annotation section.
Click Broadcast, and then choose Export from the File menu and SDP or Movie from the Export submenu.
Specify a name for the SDP or movie file and click Export.
If the file is exported directly to a QuickTime Player, the viewer opens the file using "Open Movie in New Player" to view the broadcast. If the file is exported to QTSS or DSS, the viewer instead uses "Open URL in New Player." Talk to your QTSS or DSS administrator to determine the correct URL.
    Viewing a QT broadcast:
Your audience can view your live broadcast using either QuickTime Player or a web browser with the QuickTime Plugin. You determine how users will see the broadcast by distributing an announcement movie file, which is needed by QuickTime Player to "tune in" to your broadcast, or by creating a Web page that refers to the movie file.
For best results, your viewers should use QuickTime 6. QuickTime Broadcaster streams can be viewed using versions as early as QuickTime 4, but some viewers may not be able to watch your broadcast if you choose compression methods that are not available in the older software.
When viewers connect to your stream, progress messages appear about connecting, negotiating, and buffering, then the stream begins playing. Viewers can pause or stop the broadcast, but when they resume they'll jump to the current moment if they're watching a live broadcast.
If viewers are watching an archived (or prerecorded) broadcast, they will be able to pause, rewind, or skip ahead using the QuickTime controls.
    Annotating your broadcast:
You can add a title, copyright, and other annotations to your broadcast.
If necessary, click the Show Details button in the QuickTime Broadcaster window. Then click the Network tab and fill in the desired fields under Annotations.
Your audience can view this information by choosing Show Movie Info from the File menu in the QuickTime Player application.
    About Instant-On streaming:
Viewers watching a streaming video with QuickTime 6 will benefit from Instant-On, an advance in Apple's patent-pending Skip Protection technology that dramatically reduces buffer, or wait, time for an instantaneous viewing experience. Viewers can click around or scrub video as if it was on their hard disk.
Users must have a broadband connection to experience Instant-On. The responsiveness of Instant-On is affected by available bandwidth and size, or data rate, of the content. It can also be affected by the codec used. Hinted movies made using the QDesign Audio codec, for example, may not be Instant-On capable.
    Choosing a broadcast method:
The size of your expected audience determines how you deliver the broadcast.
For example, when broadcasting a live event to only one QuickTime Player, QuickTime Broadcaster can send a single stream using Mac OS X without server software.

  • Mini Web Server Question

I'm guessing there might be a person or two who can help me with a solution for a new mini that I'm using as a web server. Everything is set up and working perfectly. Apache is running well, and I've established my Virtual Hosts and enabled PHP and MySQL. What I haven't been able to figure out, however, is how to go about limiting access to particular directories on my server.
Here is what I would like to accomplish.
I've got a couple of sights that have the root directory of /www/sitename/publichtml/.
In those public_html directories are resource directories with names like "images" "downloads" etc.
From my websites, I pull resources from those directories in order to serve images, resources, etc.
What I would LIKE to do is still allow those directories to serve the resources to the sites, but prohibit direct access to those directories from direct web access. In other words, I want my images to pull from those directories, but I don't want someone to be able to directly navigate to the directory www.sitename/images/imagename.jpg.
I would like some message to show up along the lines of "You do not have permission to access this directory".
I attempted to do this with file permissions, but it either allows total access to the directory or won't allow the web pages to pull the resources.
Does anyone know of any other solution that will help me accomplish my goal?
    Thanks!
    Chris

You are going to be more likely to get a good answer to this question in the Mac OS X Server forums. If you are using Leopard Server, go [here|http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=1237].
If you are using Mac OS X Web Sharing you should post [here|http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=1225].

  • JSP Weblogic server question.

              Hi,
I'm new with Weblogic, and I have running the server already. I'm able to run servlets
through the browser, however I want to start working with JSP. I created a sample
jsp file and when trying to launch it through the browser I get a 404 message error.
So my question is how can I make weblogic to act as a jsp server as well?
              Thank you for any help.
              A.R.

Copy your JSP file into the
              config/mydomain/applications/
              DefaultWebApp directory
In a web browser, request the JSP file using the following URL:
              http://localhost:7001/sampleJsp.jsp

  • Xserve as Web server Question

    Hi.
I'm wondering in buying the new Xserve, but I'm not sure which model, that is, how much RAM etc.
This machine will have around 30.000 concurrent users.
What should I be looking at? What I'm more looking at is do you think that any web application can be run on one Xserve?
The app will be written in RoR (Ruby on Rails). And will be hosting video files.
I know this is quite open question, but what do you recommend?
Do you think that starting with the basic model with 4GB of ram could handle these users, but maybe not on full speed?

    >many users should the Apache on Xserve be able to handle, how many requests do you think?
If only it were that simple. It isn't.
There are many factors you need to take into consideration.
Are the web pages static pages (e.g. plain HTML?) or dynamic (e.g. PHP, JSP, CGI, etc.)? That will make a big difference right there. You can sustain way more static page hits than you can dynamic ones that are built on the fly.
You might find that a single server can sustain 100 megabits per second of bandwidth for large, static files, but drops to one or two megabits per second for small, dynamically-created PHP files.
Then you have to take into account media content. Are your pages simple 10K HTML, or are they 100K of HTML, plus 50K of CSS and 200K of images?
If you're hosting videos you need to determine the size of the videos (both in terms of duration and file size). This will dictate how much bandwidth you need to serve that content to the end user.
In most cases bandwidth is going to be your bottleneck, not CPU or RAM, so you need to be able to answer those questions before you can really work out how much traffic a single server can handle.
Bear in mind that growing your site from a single server to multiple servers isn't trivial - you'll need some kind of load balancing device to spread the connections across multiple servers and they can run into a lot of $$$s (or whatever the Icelandic unit of currency is ).

  • Client-server question

    hi there..
I'm writing a java client that connects to a server to recieve some messages and classify them to different kinds, and then append these msgs to a database application. I have 2 questions:
    1. After connection is established to the server, how can my client program know that the server has been down for whatever reason? Note: im not the one who writes the server application, and that the server does not notify my client of its departure.
    2. Im thinking of creating a number of connections to the DB application thats equal to the no. of msg types i have( i have 4 msg typs, so i create 4 DB connections), will this improve the program performance more than having one DB onnection that carries all msg types?
    Thanks.. Mourad

    1. In your client if a connection is lost you will get an excepntion and you can deal with that...
    2. its a good idea to use a connection pool package to manage your connections. it will know when and how many open connections you will need. There are may packages out there. use an open source one

  • Using Smbup and Mavericks Server Questions

Hello everyone and Happy New Year!
My company has been using Mavericks Server for about three months now and we've had some major hiccups along the way, most of them relating to using Apple's iteration of SMB in a mixed environment. After weeks of research, it appears that it all stems from Apple ditching the official Samba systems after the release of Lion Server; I'm having read-only files after doing all of the possible tweaks with .TemporaryItems permissions, etc. During that research I have numerous threads and suggestions regarding SMBup as an easy method to introduce proper SMB into the Mac Mini Server, however I have a few questions about the software before I employ it on a server that powers a multi-billion dollar business.
Will SMBup interact with all the users I have already created within the Server app or do I have to recreate everyone in SMBup? If I do have to recreate users in smbup, will I have to do something different to bind the users to groups I've already created as well?
Will SMBup interfere with any of the permissions I've set with ACLs through the server app or will they be unchanged? I would assume that if the groups exist as normal (previous question) that permissions would be unchanged, but as I said I'd rather not just point and shoot.
Finally, will anything need to be done for the Mac clients in the office (as in, would I need to install SMBup on client machines as well)?
I greatly appreciate any and all the assistance you all can provide, unfortunately I never heard back from the developer after several emails over a span of a couple weeks. I figured because of the holidays and a normal developer's working life, that I probably fell through the cracks. Again, thank you and I look forward to any of the answers I can get.
    Daniel

I normally wouldn't do this but I'm sure someone has experience with this and given the board's limited searching capabilities, I haven't been able to find an answer. So, again anyone familiar with the program?

  • Java server question for sockets

    Hello,
I have a C/C++ server which works fine to communicate to Flash, but I want to use Java + Eclipse over text file editing and makefile headaches of C/C++. This will be a big project that requires organization of code, garbage collection, and nice arrays so Java is a smart choice over C/C++. I'm just hung up trying to get an echo server...
I found this echo server code: http://pastebin.com/thiQtEz5
It will receive data coming in, but when it sends echo data out, I don't read it in AS3(Flash). If I use a C/C++ echo server, I get data in and echo data out so I can read it in AS3(Flash).
It seems like most Java examples use similar code, and I find them reading in, but not communicating from echo out to AS3(Flash) read in.
If anyone has any suggestions, I'm interested. I'm new to Java, but I bet I can do cool things with it if I could get sockets working.
    ,James
PS if it helps, I also cannot use my C/C++ echo client to send data to the Java echo server... It simply doesn't read data if there is any content. If I send a null string, it understands a null string came in though.
PSS: Is this the right forum for AS3 questions, I couldn't find an AS3 forum

    Hi,
It seems that you are trying to display JSP pages. All Application servers that I am aware of convert JSP pages to a servlet and use that servlet to generate a Html page. Therefore it seems that the answer to your question is Yes!

  • A simple Report Server question!!

    Hi there,
I have recently installed 9iDS; as to start publishing my reports to the web, none of the following works:
    http://myhost:port/reports/
    http://myhost:port/reports/rwservlet/showenv
    http://myhost:port/reports/rwservlet/showjobs
they all give me the same result:
an empty browser window and an empty "smart agent"window too!!
I have already started the OC4J instance and I have my "default-web-site.xml" file modified as the following:
    <web-site host="myhost" port="8888" protocol="http"
    display-name="Oracle9iDS instance of Oracle9iAS Containers for J2EE Web Site">
    my question is:
Does Report Server ship with 9iDS? or do I have to install an application server(9iAS i.e) to use Report Server???
    appreciating ur cooperation.. Mourad

1)i think rwservlet is not there in ids - only in ias
    2) Does Report Server ship with 9iDS? or do I have to install an application server(9iAS i.e) to use Report Server???
    look for rwserver.exe in oh/bin.
for production applications "yes", u need a iAS license to deploy over web

  • Very Basic Server Question

I have a laptop and a mini, and I work on both and have difficulty keeping track of where documents are, which is the latest version, etc. What I'd like is to have is a server on which all the documents are kept and where the drive on the server shows up as a drive on the desktop of the laptop and mini (via wifi). Thus, I would always use the same files on the server via wifi, no matter which computer I'm using.
Does the Apple server provide this feature? If so, is the connection good enough that there won't be noticeable lag?

    Hi
+"Does the Apple server provide this feature?"+
Yes. You don't necessarily require Server OS as any client OS (regardless of platform) can provide simple file sharing. Peer-to-Peer File Sharing is built-into OSX and Windows. All you have to do is decide not to use that designated computer as a workstation. If there are only two workstations OSX Server could be overkill? Perhaps a second-hand G5 with a couple of 1TB drives and 10.5 Client OS would be a cheaper, better option? Other things you need to consider is some form or redundancy and backup. What plans do you have in place if the 'server' drives fails? Additionally do you have the necessary skill set to deploy and maintain a server and its environment?
Perhaps a NAS drive could be a better, cheaper, easier solution for you?
+". . . is the connection good enough that there won't be noticeable lag?"+
Only you can really answer the question. Mileage will vary depending on speed and bandwidth of the network, amount of data in terms of quantity, file sizes etc and frequency of access amongst other things.

  • SQL Server question

I have a question regarding the use of SQL Server instead of
Access for your database in RH Server 7.
Is it possible to point multiple help systems (servers) to
one SQL Server location? Our network admin is doing this currently,
and I recently noticed that the 2 help systems that are out there
are merging their reporting information. So if you log into either
Web admin you see the same results and statistics each place. He
says that you should be able to point the different servers to the
same SQL Server without this happening, but he wants me to look
into further. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have been testing this for the past couple of days. Our doc
group wants to keep the reporting stats for the different project
separate. Here is a doc that discusses that: <
    http://blogs.adobe.com/techcomm/2007/07/configuring_adobe_robohelp_ser.html>
However, I have foudn the doc to be incomplete. I have two
projects in two different servers (websites) pointing to the same
db (SQL Server). But the reporting info is still getting mixed. So
I think the key is in addition to the directions in the doc, to
point the individual websites to separate dbs (can be on the same
    SQL Server).
I have not tested this yet, but it should work. Just not sure
about the additional license issues that may have to be
    addressed.

  • Cisco Prime TFTP Server Question

Our organization recently installed Cisco Prime 1.3 on a Linux box.  I am used to using the older WCS which also had a built in TFTP server.  The old WCS was installed on a Windows Box and thus I was able to navigate to the TFTP server using Windows Explorer and the UNC path.  However, I cannot seem to access the TFTP server on the new Prime 1.3 server via that method.  I have verified that the TFTP and FTP servers are both enabled in Prime server settings and I have also verified that I can access the FTP port via a PC on the network and that the WLCs on the network are sucessfully backing up to the Prime TFTP server each night.
How can I access the TFTP server to retrieve these WLC backups if needed?

you need to enable root access.  then you can scp the files out of the directory easily enough.
    from cli
    root_enable
    follow prompts
    root
    psswd - set password
should be abel to ssh as root at that point, if you can want to say it's /localdisk/tftp, or just ls /localdisk

  • Dreamweaver 8 - Test/Production Server Question and Working Remotely

    Hello Everyone,
Right now I use Dreamweaver 8 at work with no problems. My
computer at work is also my test server. I do everything from that
one machine and then upload/put the files to our production server
once I know they are working correctly. So basically my work
computer/server is a mirror of our production server. My question
    is this:
Right now I use either Remote Administrator (Radmin) or
Remote Desktop, when working from home, to connect to my work
computer/test server (same computer). This is kind of slow trying
to move around and edit/develop. Is it possible to use Dreamweaver
8 and WebDAV or RDS to allow me to edit/create the files directly
on my work machine from home and then when I PUT the file have it
go to my production server? So basically nothing changes about how
I do it except that I am doing it remotely. Right now it downloads
the files to my computer and when I PUT them it goes only to my
test server only. I like to it to save the files to my test server
and put the files to my production server.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Maybe I am just not
    setting it up correctly.

This can’t be done as RDS is about working with and
    synchronising to your server.
You may be able to set up two sites (test server and live
server) with the same local root folder depending how you are set
up but at some point you will create synchronisation issues.
My solution is to separate the two processes, all work is
done to the test server. When changes are ready to go live they are
FTP’ed from the test server to the live server using a
separate FTP program and a snap shot of the site is taken and
backed up with the FTP log. Although it seems to be adding to the
workflow it does ensure live changes are conscious changes and
backup (role back ability) is maintained.

  • Server question

I have a developmentment environment that is like this:
    Windows 2008R2 and IIS7.5 w/ColdFusion9
There are about 20 sites that I work with on this server.
    c:\inetpub\wwwroot\cfide
    c:\inetpub\wwwroot\site1
    c:\inetpub\wwwroot\site2
    c:\inetpub\wwwroot\site3
    c:\inetpub\wwwroot\site4
    etc...
Each of these sites is accessed via
    http://sitename1.devdomain.com
    http://sitename2.devdomain.com
    http://sitename3.devdomain.com
    http://sitename4.devdomain.com
    etc...
When using a project should I be creating a server for each one or using virtual hosts or should I be doing something completely different?
If you need more info let me know.
    Thanks
    AJ

    Hi,
Above all, this question should be posted to a Windows Client system related forum such as Windows Vista:
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/category/windowsvistaitpro
Back to the issue. If you just want to store files to the Windows Vista system, it will be easy as you can simply share a folder on it and access the folder via network (of course home network as you will not able to access it outside your private network).
If you mean a "cloud" so you can access it anywhere - it will be difficult. A remote application may be helpful but the performance will be poor. Also sync app will not help as you do not have enough space to store a local copy.
