G3 with OSX3 having problems after updating QuickTime

Recently updated a G3 with 10.3 and when I did the software update, it had an update for QuickTime and when the machine restarted after update, it sat on a grey screen. Tried restarting with extensions off and got nowhere. Computer worked fine until the update. Any ideas?

You may have to start the computer from the Installer disc, with that disc
in the optical drive and hold the C key down, so as to access the native
Disk Utility as found in the Installer's menu bar options. From D.U. you
may be able to attempt to Repair Disk. And also may as well run the
Repair Disk Permissions as seen there in the First Aid section of the
Disk Utility; direct your attention to the Macintosh HD as shown in the
utility's left-hand sidebar, by clicking on that name to do these.
Usually it does help to use Repair Disk Permissions (from the computer's
Disk Utility; shortcut is to use GO in Finder menu bar, see Utilities Folder,
and then find Disk Utility in that folder) before and after each update or
any/all software installations. Was the 10.3 system updated to 10.3.9 and
disk permissions repaired at each step? There are several others items
that get installed for 10.3.9 not referred to in Software Updates until the
Combo 10.3.9 file is installed. Several older items are not needed if the
last Combo is arrived at first; but all Java updates, last security updates,
and then items such as Quicktime. Adobe Flash & Shockwave players
and a modern browser such as Camino (Mozilla) are advised as well.
IF the system has failed, you may be able to see if you can reclaim any
thing (if any) from the hard disk drive by use of FireWire Target Disk mode
in that Mac, and it may be accessible through a second Mac & FW cable.
There is a chance there is a hardware issue behind this matter. In fact,
depending on the history of the specific computer and whether or not it
previously had OS X installed, what version, and if it required a Firmware
Update to be applied prior to running OS X, the fix could be involved.
Good luck & happy computing!

    Try a Restart.
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until the red "slide to power off" slider appears, and then slide the slider. Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears.
     Resetting your settings
You can also try resetting all settings. Settings>General>Reset>Reset All Settings. You will have to enter all of your device settings again.... All of the settings in the settings app will have to be re-entered. You won't lose any data, but it takes time to enter all of the settings again.
    Resetting your device
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button together for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears. Apple recommends this only if you are unable to restart it.
Or if this doesn't work and nobody else on the blog doesn't have a better idea you can contact Apple.
Here is a link to their contacts with most of the information below.

  • 30" Monitor having problems after updating to 10.6.4

I have a Dell 3007WFP 30" monitor and as soon as I updated to 10.6.4 I am seeing a mirror display on the right hand side of the entire screen. It's in resolution 2048x1280 which is the only resolution I like to use. I am seeing other posts on here about the problem also using 30" Apple Cinema displays. Is there a way to let Apple know that they screwed the update up?

Perhaps the update did not apply successfully.
Download and reinstall it manually: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1048.
Still happening after that? Try a safeboot and then restart: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1455

  • [SOLVED] Dual boot with Windows 8, problems after updating Windows

    Hi all,
I have been maintaining a dual boot of arch and Windows 8 for some time. I recently updated Windows to 8.1, and found that the update process had two side effects:
    1) The update added a new partition in the middle of my file table, so my /etc/fstab which referenced "/dev/sda6" was wrong because that partition is now "/dev/sda7."
    2) The default boot device was switched to the Windows Boot Loader instead of grub. But, this is not a problem because I can work around this by using the "Choose boot device" feature of my bios at start up.
So, neither of these problems are critical for me at the moment. I can fix my fstab and just press a hotkey at startup.
EDIT: I have avoided the /etc/fstab issue by referencing my partitions using UUID as specified in https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Fstab.
How do I set the default boot device back to grub? There is some weirdness here, I think windows is using UEFI booting and my grub uses the old booting system.

Rex: I tried that command, got some warning messages regarding blocklists, but no dice.
Loqs: You are right about windows using a ESP and UEFI while my linux is not booting using UEFI. My bios is configured to try "Legacy boot" first before trying UEFI. Getting linux to boot using UEFI seemed like a pain, so...
I went into my BIOS settings and found that the Windows Boot Manager boot device was listed in front of my hard disk (which boots linux). I don't think this used to be the case, so something about the update caused my BIOS to reorder the boot devices (probably because the partitions changed).
Switching my hard disk to be above the Windows Boot Manager in the boot device list now makes me boot into linux by default, and I can boot into windows by pressing a hotkey at bootup and selecting the windows boot manager.

I am using a Vista PC with iTunes10.5. After updating my 3gs to iOS 5.0 I am not able to sync the phone. iTunes recognizes my iphone and then stays syncing at the backup stage....I deleted all my apps on the phone and deleted previous backups and tried syncing again, but in vain. I am clueless....

I just plugged it into my netbook and its Restoring it on there so thanks, I know I will lose what I never had backed up but just be happy if it works. Fingers crossed this fixes it.
Edit: It didnt work, come up with iTunes isnt connected to the internet then the restore fails

  • Iphone 5 back camera problem after update to IOS 8. Focus doesn't work on back camera!

My device is Iphone 5 64gb IOS 8.
I have problem after update to IOS 8. When i run camera.. I hear some scratch inside my phone. And focus of back camera doesn't work.
    1. How can i fix it?
    2. Or how to rollback to IOS 7+ ?
    3. Should i come to app store with this problem?

I'm having this same problem too.  Worked fine prior to iOS update.  I contacted Verizon this morning who advised that this is a known issue.  They suggested I backup my device, and perform a factory data reset.  When prompted to update to iOS 8 again, re-installation has been known to resolve the issue.  With all the problems with iOS 8, camera, and overall device slowing, I might just wait for a follow on SW turn.

  • WIFI problem after update 2.2

Like many users in this forum I also have problems with the wifi connection after updating to 2.2.
I have the first gen iphone, ever functioned without major problems, but after update 2.2. I found out that my iphone looses the wifi connection after some minutes of being turned off and turned on again. Sometimes the wifi is established but most of the times I have to go to the settings and there try to connect to wifi again and again.
Sometimes I get wifi connection after 2 attempts, most of the times it takes up to 8 tries to have wifi again. I restored my phone three times now, hoping this problem would be solved, but in vain.
I also called the Apple support-first I was told to delete the 2.2. software from my itunes folder and then to restore again and let itunes download 2.2 software again - no improvement! At my next call with the Apple-Iphone support, the agent told me that I should delete my router settings, restore the iphone software- no new strategy at all - and that the problem with the wifi after 2.2. is not a well known issue by Apple; I told the agent to google this topic to see that this is a very common problem concerning hundreds of even thousands of users after the update 2.2. At the end of the call I was offered to send the iphone for a repair, which in my opinion is the common solution for support centers if the don´t have any solutions left. I refused to send my iphone to a "useless" repair, because it´s so obvious that the problem is the 2.2. update! I encourage all of you to call the support-hotline and make pressure to get Apple to release a quick update to fix this annoying problem! Happy New Year to all of you!

Thanks for your advice; I´ve resetted the networks setting twice; a little improvement came with this (the wifi-connection now sometimes establishes faster); but still..after having turned on my phone after some minutes paused there´s only "edge" activated. Seems I´ll have to wait for update 2.3 ?

  • White screen problem after updating to 1.1 firmware

My 2G iPod Nano worked fine with 1.0.1 and 1.0.2 firmware but after updating to 1.1 I get white screen everytime I turn it on after longer period of time. Turning the iPod off and then right back on makes it work again. I have done restore 3 times without effect. I even removed the firmware files so that iTunes downloads them again when doing the restore but that didn't work either.
Should I return it or wait for new firmware? Has anyone else had this problem after updating to 1.1?

    Disconnect iPod and close iTunes.
Firmware files are in "Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPod Software Updates" folder.
You should still have the 1.0.2 files named "iPod_19.1.0.2.ipsw" and "iPod_19.1.0.2.ipsw.signature" in there if have you upgraded from 1.0.1 version.
Remove 1.1 files from the folder so that only those to files are in there.
Disconnect from network (I switched off my wlan) so that iTunes can't download the new version. Connect your iPod and do Restore, iTunes will now use the old firmware files because it can't connect to the internet.

  • Photoshop CS2 problems after updating to 10.4.5.?

Anybody notice Photoshop CS problems after updating to 10.4.5.?

Hello I had the same problem
I found the following information that helped me.....
Program errors occur when software conflicts arise due to an updated operating system. You can resolve these errors when you also update the driver software that causes the conflict or when you update the operating system. Program errors can also occur because of a damaged Photoshop preference file, or if there is a problem with a phone or internet connection. The Apple Disk Utility fixes file system errors that can also cause program errors.
Error "Could not complete your request..." or "Could not create a new document..." (Photoshop CS2 on Mac OS X v10.4)
    Issue
Adobe Photoshop CS2 returns one of the following error messages:
"Could not complete your request because of a program error" when you try to open a file.
"Could not create a new document because of a program error" when you try to create a new file.
    Solution 1:
Install the most recent update to Mac OS.
    Solution 2:
    Re-create your preferences files.
    1. Hold CommandOptionShift when you start Photoshop.
    2. Click Yes to the message, "Delete the Adobe Photoshop Settings file?"
    Solution 3:
    Disconnect your Internet connection.
To disconnect your Internet connection, do one of the following:
If you are connected to the Internet via a telephone modem, then disconnect from the modem.
If you are connected to the Internet via cable modem or DSL, then disconnect the ethernet cable from your computer.
    Solution 4:
    Use a disk repair utility.
Restart your Mac in Single User mode and run fsck -fy . For more information about the fsck command, please visit the Apple website at http:/docs.info.apple.comarticle.html?artnum=106214 .
    Solution 5:
Ensure that all your drivers are compatible with Mac OS X v10.4.
Determine if your printer and video card (and any other peripherals you might have) are compatible with Mac OS X v10.4, and visit the manufacturers' websites to update the drivers.
    Solution 6:
Re-create your printers in Mac OS X.
To re-create your printers, first delete them and then add them again.
    To delete your printers:
    1. Open System Preferences from the Apple menu.
    2. Select Print & Fax, and click Printing.
    3. Select each printer in the list and click the delete key (the minus key).
For instructions on how to add your printers again, see "Setting up to print to a printer" in Mac Help or search Help using the phrase "add a printer."
The one that fixed it for me was solution 6 -- re-creating my printers
I don't know why but it could be worth a try
    Good luck
