G3 X4 startup blue screen responsive arrow Darwin login prompt

I tried booting in 'safe mode,' but the screen goes black and the machine turns completely off. The trouble shooting page on apple.com only gives instructions for 3.9 or earlier.
Where are the instructions for X.4 when 'safe mode' won't work?
Starting up normal led to a 10 minute frozen blue screen (with responsive arrow) that ended with a 'Darwin/BSD' prompt for a login. What's up with that?
Thank you very much if you have any sage advice!
(this particular machine is a G4 with OSX 4.? [the latest OS])

Hi, knowmoore.
You wrote: "I tried booting in 'safe mode,' but the screen goes black and the machine turns completely off."That usually indicates that your startup disk is severely corrupted. See: "Mac OS X 10.4: Computer shuts down during Safe Boot."
I suggest you begin troubleshooting using the Procedure specified in my "Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption" FAQ. Perform the steps therein in the order specified.
Good luck!

  • Startup blue screen - but able to login!

    Please,
Sometimes, during start up, the screen of my ibook become blue. I thought it was a hang, but I tried to just type "enter" and my "login password". After that, I had log in.
Is it normal? To those who having experiencing the same problem (blue screen at startup), please, try to do the same procedure and answer if it worked?
    Best wishes,

    What was found on Google:
... respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes
    What's happening
You see a message on the console like: "Getty respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes". Instead of "Getty" it may display a label (such as: Id "S2") where S2 is the label for the line in /etc/inittab from where from where getty was called.
When getty starts up, it tries to send a login message to the serial port. But if there is something seriously wrong, getty will be immediately killed. Since the /etc/inittab file line for getty says to "respawn", getty is started again, only to be killed again, etc. Thus getty respawns over and over. But the operating system intervenes and stops this nonsense (for 5 minutes). The following sections show possible causes and fixes.
Getty line in /etc/inittab file incorrect
Make sure the the line which calls getty in /etc/inittab is correct. A typo in "ttySx" (or "DTxxxx" for uugetty) or in "getty" may cause this problem.
    No modem control signal
If the terminal doesn't send the PC a CD signal on one of the pins of the serial port, getty will be killed unless the "local" option has been used with getty. So a quick fix is to just use a "local" option (-L for agetty, "CLOCAL" in /etc/gettydefs for ps_getty).
Another approach is to determine why CD is not being asserted. In many cases the cable to the terminal simply doesn't have a wire for the CD pin so you must use the "local" option. If there is a wire for the CD pin then there may not be any signal on it until the terminal is powered on. Note that the CD pin signal is sometimes supplied by the DTR pin of the terminal (or the PC) by using jumper wires inside the connector.
    No such serial device
If the device (such as /dev/ttyS2) is bogus (doesn't physically exist or has been disabled), then getty will be killed. You may use "scanport" (Debian only ??) and/or "setserial" to probe for the device or try another ttyS. Perhaps the device has been disabled in the CMOS. See "Serial-HOWTO".
    No serial support
Linux provides serial support either by selecting it when compiling the kernel or by loading the serial module: serial.o. This "respawning" error happens if serial support has neither been built into the kernel nor provided by a serial module. You many use the "lsmod" command to see if the serial module is loaded. To see if serial support is built into the kernel, check a kernel configuration file (in /boot, in the source tree, etc.)
    Key shorted
Another possible cause of getty respawning too rapidly is if a keyboard key is shorted. This gives the same result as if the key was continuously held down. With auto-repeat enabled, this "types" thousands of characters to the login prompt. Look for a screen filled with all the same character (in some cases, with 2 or more different characters).
You may want to try posting in the Unix Forum (if you haven't already done so).

  • Extremely Slow Startup, Blue Screen, and Poor Performance

    Hello,
A couple of weeks ago my MBP 15" (late 2009 model) started performing really poorly. The colour wheel would spin for about 2 minutes if a launched any applications and everything was really slow. It also took about 10 minutes on the grey apple screen to startup and then another 10 or so on the blue screen before slowly revealiing my desktop.
I took it into the genius bar and the said it might be a corrupt file on the HD. Backed up my HD, zeroed the drive and reinstalled OS. Still the same problems. Ran disk utility several times and got various errors pertaining to HD or RAM.
Took it back into the Genius bar and they ran a long diagnostic on it, came back to me and said it is deifinatly the RAM. I replaced the ram, (2x2GB ddr3-1066 sodimm) and cleared PRam. Still the same startup and performance issues.
Any ideas would be appreciated as this is stressing me out big time as I dont know what else it could be?

Hmm... before this I think I would have restarted the computer in Safe Boot mode which deletes the dynamic-loader shared cache.
Not sure if it is relevant at this point
    Safe Boot
    # it forces a directory check of the startup volume.
    # It loads only required kernel extensions (some of the items in /System/Library/Extensions).
    # In Mac OS X v10.3.9 or earlier, Safe Mode runs only Apple-installed startup items (such items may be installed either in /Library/StartupItems or in /System/Library/StartupItems; these are different than user-selected account login items).
    # It disables all fonts other than those in /System/Library/Fonts (Mac OS X v10.4 or later).
    # It moves to the Trash all font caches normally stored in /Library/Caches/com.apple.ATS/(uid)/ , where (uid) is a user ID number such as 501 (Mac OS X v10.4 or later).
    # It disables all startup items and login items (Mac OS X v10.4 or later).
    # Mac OS X v10.5.6 or later: A Safe Boot deletes the dynamic loader shared cache at (/var/db/dyld/). A cache with issues may cause a blue screen on startup, particularly after a Software Update. Restarting normally recreates this cache.

Did you run the Apple Hardware Test. What is the S.M.A.R.T. status, could be that HD is failing?

  • Startup Blue Screen

I have an external hard disk attached to my MacBook Pro, and I use it as my Time Machine backup. Recently, when I press the power button to start up my Mac, the process will stall at the dreaded "blue screen". This occurs after the grey Apple logo, but before the login screen.
A bit of investigation revealed that if I unplug my external hard disk (by pulling its Firewire cable), the blue screen disappears immediately and I can proceed to login as normal.
I've tried using Disk Utilities to verify/repair the external disk, as well as resetting PRAM parameter, to no avail. I've even used Disk Utilities to completely erase the external disk and reformat it as "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)", but the problem persists. The external hard disk is otherwise functioning as normal.
Can someone please tell me how I can kill this annoying blue screen? Thanks in advance!

    Hi Cameron,
I would suggest trying a Safe-Boot (Hold down shift after the chime), if that works, then it could possibly be an issue with startup items.
If it reaches the blue screen, that means that it has loaded the EFI and the kexts etc. SO it doesn't really sound like anything to do with your HardDrive.
Perhaps take a look at http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1411#symp1.
    Might help you out
    Good luck

  • MacBook Stuck in Startup Blue Screen, HDD is Spinning

Well, I fear the worst has occurred to my mid 07 Macbook.
When I boot up the machine, it stays stuck in the blue screen start up, not able to find any startup disc. I gave a listen to the HDD and it is spinning when I try starting up. So this would mean a system failure, however I have had the motherboard replaced twice this year. Is the motherboard/system most liekly the issue?

This has nothing to do with with iPhoto - post in the MacBook Forum - http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=218

  • Kernel panick upon startup blue screen

Hey everybody, new to the forum, hoping you all can help me out. I'm using a 15" macbook pro and every time I start it up, I get past the grey apple screen, but as soon as it gets to the blue screen and my mouse appears, I get a kernel panick. This happens every time it starts up. I can use boot camp and boot up in windows, but I am unable to use the OS X side of my hard drive. HELP!

    Hi sig,
    and thanks for the link.
I failed to mention earlier that when i try to start in safe mode, it does the same, first gray logo with spinning circle, and then blue screen.
On repeat, I have a MAC OS X installation disk, which allows me to use the utilities, but doesnt get verified at the end of the installation process.
is the backup and fresh install the only solution left since all listed on that page has already been used? thanks again.

  • Reaching blue screen on start up - login window not appearing

I've checked the other threads on this, and have even posted about this previously without solution. The last time this happened I had no choice but to clone over my backup. Now it's happened again I need to stop it from happening a third time.
We've had two instances of my partner shutting down from within her user and finding the Mac hanging for so long that she's forced to hold the power button down to get out of it. The next day I run DiskWarrior, restart and all appears fine - no problem restarting or on shutdown. This morning I get to the blue screen and that's where it stays. The mouse appears, then disappears, then appears again, and this is all it does.
Started up in Safe Mode - same result.
Ran DW and TTP4 again - no issues and nothing to repair.
Every test I run shows everything is as it should be - yet all I get is blue screen.
The Crash Log shows an issue with the Security Agent. If anyone can interpret it and shed some light I'd be really grateful:

Unless you know of a specific log entry, I would hold off posting more that most can't decipher.
I understand that, but without knowing which specific bit of the log entry is relevant, it's hard to make that call. I'd hoped that by posting the whole thing someone could point me in a specific direction.
Most of the time it is a matter of trial and error and removing 3rd party devices, cables, and looking at 3rd party background processes, driver extensions, apps, haxies, and such.
The problem I have doesn't repeat itself after I've replaced the HD with my backup SD clone. Yet the SD clone was updated a week after this happened the first time, when I was sure that everything was working fine. It was then updated a couple of times after that, and 2 months must have gone by when it happened again yesterday, causing me to have to restore. So working on the principle of removing stuff in order to test whether its them, when they all seem to work fine for weeks, seems unlikely to be fruitful, as much as I'd like to know what it is.
You may need to reapply the combo update for 10.5.4, or do an archive and install.
    I'd already performed the former. I guess an A & I can't hurt.

  • Update Word and now can't even login! Blue Screen and returns to login!

    Hi,
I'm new to Macs and recently put Word onto it. Went to use it a couple of days ago and it said that it had a critical update for Word. So I clicked yes to update.
    Next thing...it all froze!
Then took me to login screen. Initially I just thought..."Oh it's restarted after update." But when I logged in it accepted password...went to a blue screen and came back to the login.
Now I can't get into my mac!
    Please help...what do I do!!???

There are a couple possibilities. Start out by turning the computer on while holding down the 'Shift' key until you see the grey Apple. This is a safe boot and you can read more about it here. If the computer boots up to the login screen and you can log into your account the problem may be solved. The failed Word update may simply have led to a scrambled cache file that kept the computer from booting.
The other possibility I'd consider is that the update failed due to a disk drive error. If the safe boot doesn't work get out your System disc and restart your computer with it. (Start the computer, hold the 'C' key and insert the System Restore disc. Once it has booted, move to the Utilties menu and select Disk Utility. Perform a repair and if it reports the drive isn't repairable you'll know that's the problem - and we can talk about what to do next.

  • Lion 10.7 gray progress bar appears under Apple logo on startup.  Slow to boot to login prompt or Finder

iMac Troubleshooting topics section shows this topic for SnowLeopard10.6 and suggests that there may be a hard disk problem.  Recommendation was to startup iMac from the 10.6 install disk and use Disk Utility to attempt to repair the hard disk.  Lion 10.7.2 was downloaded so there is no disk to attempt this repair with.  Any suggestions or experience with the gray cloth screen in Lion and a progress bar under the Apple logo on boot up?  It seems to take a lot longer to boot up now to get a login prompt or desktop than when it was fresh out of the box in July 2011 with Snow Leopard 10.6  Thanks for your help!

    Hello
    just an idea
first shut down your mac then , unplug your keyboard if is a wired one , or remove battery from your wirless keyboard then power up your mac , does the progress bar appear again ?
or more simple try an other keyboard if is possible , preferably a wired keyboard

  • Blue screen appears during start up

Hi! My macbook before it bacame a blue screen, shows that the start up disk is almost full but i ignored it...and then suddenly it doesn't start up anymore and shows only blue screen with arrow...pls help! I don't know much about computers! :(

    Boot up in Safe Mode.
Startup your Mac in Safe Mode
A Safe Mode boot takes much longer than a normal boot so be patient.
Once you are in Safe Mode, you need to delete data in order to free up disk space, ie., photos, video, etc.
When you are in Safe Mode, control click the MacintoshHD icon on the desktop then click Get Info. You'll see Capacity & Available.  You need at least 15% available disk space.
Then click Restart from the Apple () menu.

  • After change the file access option 'No Access', I cannot start up my iMac. Only blue screen!

    Hi experts,
    I really need help.
I have several user accounts in my iMac G5.
Some reason - I don't know why I did - I went into the 'get info' of the Mac hard drive, and change the permission to the hard drive from 'Read and Write' 'to 'No Access' for the one of the user accounts.
After that, I switched the user as the one I just changed 'No Access'. But I couldn't do any action in that user space, like opening finder, starting any program.
So I re-started the computer and since then, I only see the blue screen (no arrow no nothing.).
I tried booting with Safe Mode, but still only show blue screen.
I tried booting with single user mode, still blue screen.
I can start up with the disk but couldn't restore the HD since there is no time point at all that I can go back.
What should I do? Please help me~

I tried booting with single user mode, still blue screen.
Changing permissions an a user account should not cause single user mode to fail.  You changed permissions on something else. Could you provide more info on the folder you changed?

This is a little confusing.  We need to know what folder you changed.
You might try Disk Utility repair permissions. Here is how to get into Disk Utility from the startup disk.
You can also get into the Terminal. Notice terminal is on the pull down. Check permissions on the root directory
    mac $ ls -ld /
    drwxrwxr-t   51 root  admin    1K Dec 31  1969 /
    mac $
verify & repair your startup drive
To verify & repair you file system on the startup drive, you will need to run disk utility from you installation DVD.
This article  will tell you how to get to disk utility.  Once in a disk utility, you can go and attempt to recover the disk.

How to run disk utility from your startup DVD.
Insert your  startup DVD  into your reader.  Power down your machine.  Hold down to the c key.  Power on your machine.  This will bootup your startup DVD.
This will bring you to a panel asking you for your language.  Pick your language.
You you come to the Install Mac OS panel.  Do not install.
Click on Utilities menu item.  This will give you a pulldown list of utilities.
    Click on the disk utility.
You are now in disk utility.  Pick your disk.  Click on repair it should be on the lower right of the panel.
Once the repair completes successfully, you should update your permissions.
    Verify a disk
As an alternative, you can verify that the filesystem on the disk is correct. You will not be able to repair the file system.
I suggest that you use disk utility to verify that your startup disk is OK.
    Macintosh-HD -> Applications -> Utilities -> Disk Utility
Start up disk utility.  On the left pane view, you will see a list of all your disks.
    Click on your startup disk.
Click on the First Aid  Tab.
    Click on verify.
Hopefully your disk will verify.  If not, you have to boot from your installation DVD and run Disk Utility from there to attempt to repair your file-system.

    What should I do?

for purchases from the iTunes store do this:
ensure iTunes on the new installation is authorized for your iTunes store account(s). connect your device and right-click or control-click it in the iTunes Source list, then choose transfer purchases from the shortcut menu that appears.
for everything else check out this post by Zevoneer.
