G4 1,42 Dual Boot Time 1,25min?

hi,
i`ve got different mac`s and the 1,42 is the slowest with 1,25min boot time - is that normal?
- my quicksilver 867 single boots in 32sec!
-my imac 400dv boots in round 40sec!
(thats why i am a little confused)

My 20 year old IIci boots in 17 seconds.
Like said, it depends on the amount (and speed) of RAM in your Mac. I changed my PMG4 MDD from 1G to 2G many years ago, but the one thing I do remember is the first boot after the upgrade seemed to take forever, and it's been slower ever since. 2G of RAM, on a 167MHz bus is a lot of RAM to check.
Also depends if you have a selected start up disk. If you do it goes straight to your chosen disk to boot. If not, it asks all the disks if they have a bootable OS on them and will pick one (usually the first installed OS on the first partition or the Master disk on the first ATA channel).

I have been having problems dual booting into Windows 7 and Arch.  The time is always slow by a few hours, no matter what I try to do.  I have tried both localtime and UTC and get the same problem.

Is the time slow on Windows and Arch, or just slow on Arch?
Is the time slow by the same amount every boot?
Is the time slow by an exact number of hours and zero minutes?

No, you can't partition a Time Capsule's internal HD.  Both partitions will back up to the same sparse bundle. keeping the backups for each partition separate.
Time Machine will not take the two OSX partitions as two different computers, but for best results, exclude the Snow Leopard drive from backups on the Lion partition, and exclude the Lion partition from backups on the Snow Leopard partition.
There may be some files on the Lion partition that Time Machine on Snow Leopard won't like, among other things.  See #10 in  Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions for details.

  • When dual-booting with Windows 7, Mac OSX time settings reset every reboot.

I have recently installed Windows 7 Professional on my mid 2010 MacBook Pro via BootCamp (Running Mavericks BTW). Everything runs grean and have not experienced any problems on the Windows side, but I have a problem with Mac OSX now. When I am using Windows 7, and I reboot into Mac OSX, I find that my time settings are wrong. It seems like my time zone has changed, because the date is correct, as well as the minutes, but the hour is always wrong. When I go to Date & Time in System Preferences, and my time zone is correct, but I still have to chage the hour in the time. Any ideas as to why this is happening and how to stop it would be greatly appreciated.

If you dual boot your Windows PC with OS X or Linux, you may have experienced a problem in which your clocks reset themselves incorrectly every time you boot into Windows. Here's a simple registry edit to fix that.
Essentially, the incorrect clock setting happens because OS X and Linux use GMT time while Windows tries to synchronize with your local time zone, getting confused when you reboot between the two. Apple's own Boot Camp drivers for Windows are supposed to fix this problem, though some users have noticed that it still happens even with the drivers installed, and some Linux users are left out in the cold. Furthermore, if you have a Hackintosh, you can't install the Boot Camp drivers, so you'll need to find another way around the problem.
To fix it, just hit Start and type regedit.exe in the search box. Hit Enter and navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\TimeZoneInformation. Right click anywhere in the right pane and hit New > DWORD (32-bit) Value. Name it RealTimeIsUniversal, then double click on it and give it a value of 1.
Lastly, reboot into OS X, then reboot back into Windows. You should now notice that your clock actually displays the correct time.

  • Will time machine get messed up in dual boot Leopard/Snow Leopard?

I have one piece of software that I need to use that does not work in Snow Leopard, so I have held off upgrading for awhile. I have a project coming up however that uses another piece of software that is accelerated greatly by running in Snow Leopard, thus I would like to dual boot Leopard and Snow Leopard on separate partitions.
My question is: is the Time Machine backup going to work when I am booted into either OS version? Do I have to disable time machine in one of them? I could be booted for several days at a time in one OS version or the other, so I would like to be backing up while in either os. I really value Time Machine. It has saved my behind several times.
    Cheers,
    -Matt

Thanks for the testing and tips Pondini. Sounds like everything will work, so I just ordered my copy of Snow Leopard.
    You'll love it!
Your idea of excluding the the opposite boot partition from each other's time machine settings is a good one. I plan to keep most of my work files on a separate internal drive anyway (that will be included in the TM backup under either OS), so the boot partition not currently being used shouldn't change when I'm in the other OS.
Ah, in that case, don't partition the TM drive (otherwise you'll have two separate backups of the work drive). And it won't much matter whether you exclude the "other" boot volumes or not; if nothing changes, there won't be anything to back up.
There are a couple other changes in Time Machine for Snow Leopard, that you might notice:
Disk full option, messages, and handling. In TM Preferences > Options, the +Warn before old backups are deleted+ is worded +Notify after old backups are deleted+ in Snow Leopard. If the disk gets full under Leopard, the backup will fail with a message. On Snow Leopard, the oldest backup(s) will be deleted, then a message will be sent. See #C4 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).
The "Preparing" phase at the beginning of a backup is now called "Calculating Changes," and (effective with 10.6.3) you'll see "Scanning nnn items" messages when TM does a "deep traversal," and "Preparing nnn items" messages" on the TM Preferences panel and when you click the TM icon in your menubar, before actual copying gets started.

  • How to set time in Dual-boot config with Windows 8.1

    Hi,
I have been trying to workaround this problem i am having with Arch linux and Windows 8.1 time settings.
According to Installation guide on Wiki I set hardware clock to UTC and added my local time zone too.
But my Windows 8.1 uses hardware clock a local time and it is really confusing me.
I did tried to setup Windows 8.1 to use UTC (http://superuser.com/questions/494432/f … bios-clock)
but that settings is not working on my side (most Windows 8.1 users are also getting the same problem)
    Please help.

I have two laptops which are dual booted arch and Windows 8.1.  For both of those machines I set the Windows clock to be UTC instead of local using the method in https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ti … in_Windows (i.e. creating the .reg file and executing it - take care that the .reg file is created correctly with the .reg extension or it won't execute).  I still allow Windows 8.1 to update its time from the network and it does not cause a problem, though the advice is to let Arch do the time synchronisation. (That may be because it is not yet summertime so I will also disable time sync in Windows before the change to summertime at the end of this month). I also followed the normal install advice for Arch and have the hardware clock in UTC, and have chrony set up to keep time in sync.  Additionally I use KDE and have my normal timezone with DST adjustments for summertime.  I have not had any problem with that way of working on either of my two machines.
I presume that if the Windows clock registry hack is done after the dual boot install it should not matter but I made that change before installing Arch.

  • Running Dual boot windows 8 and win 7 pro with xp mode installed!! I love it!!

It took over 2 days to figure out how to adjust the bios to get my win 7 pro DVD to boot and install dual boot on this GREAT MACHINE!!
Step 1: using diskmgmt.msc you have to shring the C partition. I shrunk it so I had 80GB remaining as unallocated space.
Step 2: You have to enter the machine Bios adn set the BIOS to Both and UEFI as first
Step 3: Connect your usb dvd
Step 4: Put your win 7 pro dvd in the usb dvd drive
Step 5: Reboot your machine and when it starts press F12 to get the boot menu and select the usb dvd drive then press enter
    The machine restarts
Message on screen says press a key to boot from cd/dvd
Press space and it boots up the win 7 pro DVD
After files copy and load the setup screen asks to accept the agreement and where to install win 7
BE SURE TO SELECT THE 80GB location
Then follow thru the win 7 prompts to load it.
When the machine restarts you will see a dual boot screen with Windows 7 on top as first selection and Windows 8 below it as 2nd selection.
Make sure to hit enter with windows 7 selected
    The win 7 installation completes.
You will see many items with drivers not installed dont fret.
You can load most of the drivers by highlighting the device in control panel/device manager and pick update driver then select BROWSE for DRIVER and be sure to put in drive D:\ which is now the windows 8 drive and hit search.
Many of the windows 8 drivers installed with no issue.
The Realtek driver was an exception .. goto to the lenovo site and pick the x100e tablet and download the LAN driver from there  about (4MB). Copy it to flash drive and install it in win 7 from the .exe file. The driver for LAN will install sucessfully. The version of the driver is 7.46 something the 7.11 versions do not workl.
I have only 3 drivers that I could not find - 2 list as unknown and are related to ACPI or power management and 1 lists as USB controller but all the USB stuff works without it.
Be sure to either shutdown the system or sign out of win 8 when your done so you get the dual boot menu. If you shutdown while logged into win 8 the next time you start up it will go right to win 8 until you signout and restart.
Just to let you know an easy way to shutdown is go to the desktop and press ALT + FN + F4 and a shutdown menu comes up on the desktop.
Once win 7 pro is installed you can download the XP mode free from Microsoft and install it.
This is of course AFTER you have ACTIVATED WINDOWS 7 ONLINE with YOUR ACTIVATION KEY(you supply).
ENJOY! This is the BEST machine I ever had!

It's been many, many years since I don't do dual boot anymore. Don't find the reason to do it, either. Different kinds of virtualization should be enough. Anyway...

  • Convert PXIe-8135 controller to dual-boot Windows 7 and LabVIEW RT

Hello. I have a PXIe-8135 controller that originally was just running Windows 7. We are trying to convert it to a dual boot system to also run LabView Real Time. (There is host computer that will run LabVIEW 2014 with the RT module, and the controller will become a target).
I have created a FAT32 partition on the hard drive of the controller. Now, I’m trying to install the real-time OS with a USB flash drive made using the MAX utility, but I cannot boot using the USB drive for some reason. I keep getting the message “waiting for USB device to initialize”.
In BIOS, legacy USB support is [ENABLED] and boot configuration is set to [Windows/other OS]. I’ve tried removing the drive, waiting, and reinserting. I’ve tried two different USB drives (both 8 GB, different brands).
I’m not sure what to do next. Apart from the USB boot issue, is converting the PXIe-8135 even possible?  I read about SATA/PATA hard drive issues with older controllers, but I don't know about this one.
Thanks, in advance, for your help!
    -Jeff
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Per Siana's licensing comment, more information on purchasing a deployment license if you do not have one for this target can be found here.
The RT Utility USB key is used to set up non-NI hardware with LabVIEW Real-Time, but you should not need it in this situation to convert to dual-boot (*). Try this:
    1. Since you already have a FAT32 partion created, go into BIOS setup and change to booting 'LabVIEW RT'.
    2. The system will attempt to boot LabVIEW RT, see that the partition is empty, and switch over into LabVIEW RT Safe Mode. (this safemode is built into the firmware, which is why you don't really need the USB key).
    3. The system should come up correctly and be detectable from MAX, and you can proceed with installing software.
    4. To switch back to Windows, go back to BIOS setup and choose 'Windows/Other OS'
(*) One area where the USB key is helpful on a dual boot system is with formatting the disk. If you want to convert from FAT32 to Reliance on the partition designated for LabVIEW RT, the USB key lets you attempt to format a single parition and leave the rest of the disk untouched. If you format from MAX, the standard behavior is to format only one RT partition if found, but if not found, it will format the entire disk.  Formatting from MAX on a dual boot system is consequently riskier and you could lose your Windows partition.

  • Dual Boot Windows 7

Hey guys, I was just wondering what exactly I need in order to successfully dual-boot my Mac into Windows 7. I've got the software for Boot Camp all down and ready, but my only question is finding the right copy of Windows 7 that'll install as a first time. Also, can I install Windows 7, or would I need Windows Vista/XP already installed and then just upgrade the Windows? Thanks, and could you tell me if this Windows 7 product is correct/eligible for Dual-Boot: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/windows-7-home-premium-with-service-pack-1-64-bit-li cense-and-media-1-pc-pc/5130359.p;jsessionid=B5FB2641437C993E1EAE2430E84DAB00.bb olsp-app03-156?id=1219111161659&skuId=5130359&st=categoryid$abcat0508002&lp=4&cp =1
I guess when it says PC disc, it'll work with dual-boot.
    Again, thanks!

How old is your Macbook? The majority of them can directly install Windows 7.
Yes, the product you linked to from BestBuy is what you'd need to install Windows 7.
The only additional thing you'd need is a 4gb flash drive to store the Boot Camp drivers on after you first install Windows.
Setting up a Boot Camp partition is pretty straightforward, just start Boot Camp Assistant and follow the instructions. But feel free to post anymore questions if you have any, because there's always a chance of breaking something if you're doing it for the first time

  • Windows 8.0 new dual boot GUI disappeared and replaced with text menu after installing updated 8.0 and 8.1

I upgraded my windows xp to windows 8.0 and my windows 7 to windows 8.1 for a dual boot environment. I am using BCDEDIT program. I had no problem when booting to the GUI menu OF WINDOWS 8 when I first INSTALLED Windows 8. But after the second time
I booted from a cold start it defaulted back to the old text version of the dual boot menu from the old windows xp and 7 . I have tried many times to restore the boot mgr TO GET BACK THE WINDOWS 8 GUI but I can't seem to put my
finger on the root cause remedy  that would over-ride the default TEXT VERSION STYLE. I really like the Windows 8 GUI interface. Remember I am not having any problems with booting into the OS of my choice ----- just the BOOTMENUPOLICY.
Here is where I need to resolve the new from the old command. By the way Does the Bcdedit program need to be installed in both OS'S? And when original Windows 7 was installed the os partitioned a Boot 100mb. I cannot remove or delete it in my Disk Management.
Just some other tidbits to ponder from any help I would appreciate.
    Thanks

  • T440P Dual Boot Windows 8 with Centos 7

So I have a T440p with Windows 8 installed. I have been trying to dual boot Centos 7 and also have attempted Centos 6.5. I have been using a bottable USB to perform the installation for both Centos 7 and 6.5.
When I try the Centos 7 install, I set the boot priority to USB first on startup, and it goes to a screen that lists options to install, verify Centos 7 or troubleshoot. Upon selecting any of these options, everytime I get the error message:
    "alua: not attached"
When attempting the Centos 6.5 Live DVD install, I try to boot into the Live mode, but it freezes in the process each time.
I have heard about there being issues dual booting Windows 8 in UEFI mode with another Linux Distrobution.
Has anyone here sucessfully dual-booted Centos or any other Linux Distrobution on a T440P?

  • Dual boot Windows 8.1 with Yosemite

I'm attempting to dual boot Windows 8.1 on my parents iMac. I downloaded and successfully used Boot Camp 5 to partition the drive, giving the new section 50GB. I successfully installed Windows 8.1. Unfortunate now I cannot access the Yosemite partition. Boot Camp is not available in the Windows 8.1 I just installed, so the obvious option to use Boot Camp to reboot into OS X is not available. I tried downloading Boot Camp in Windows, but it won't install - error message indicates there is no location to install it to. I tried to restarting and holding the option key 12 separate times, it always boots into Windows without bringing up the any other option. I tried booting into safe mode and resting the PRAM several times, same outcome of booting into Windows; although Windows did not always boot it froze half the time. The idea was just be able to run some Windows games without purchasing another computer. Any ideas on what went wrong and how to fix it?

You do not need the Boot Camp drivers on Windows in order to start up in OS X. However, note that the option to start up with the Option (Alt) key is more tricky in those computers with a Bluetooth keyboard, such as the iMac.
In order to start up in OS X, you have to press the Option key since the startup sound has finished (if you do it before, your Mac will not recognize it) and hold it until you see all bootable partitions in the screen. Then, choose your OS X volume.
If you could not install the Boot Camp drivers in Windows, open Boot Camp Assistant after starting up in OS X and follow its steps (you will need a USB drive to save your drivers). Finally, start up in Windows, access to your USB drive through Windows Explorer and run the installer.

  • EFI Update v2.6 breaks Windows dual boot

The EFI Update MBA51.00EF.B02 has broken WIndows on my MacBook Air 2012
Bootcamp Dual boot using OSX Lion & WIndows 7 was working fine prior to the EFI update.
Since then, the WIndows initial boot screen displays, but as soon as the GUI starts there is a blank notebook screen.
Using an external monitor connected via Thunderbolt > VGA adapter, the Windows GUI Logon & desktop shows on the external monitor, but Control Panel display manager cannot see the MBA own lcd screen as a display option.
This makes it unusable as a portable WIndows M/C, as instead of fixing WIndows it has broken it.
    Can I regress ?
Is there a fix to this issue ?
    Please Help

@vintherine: Everything you mentioned in the 1st post is correct. In your case the correct commands should be:
    grub-install --target=x86_64-efi --efi-directory=/boot/efi --bootloader-id=arch_grub --recheck
    grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg
Thanks. I've tried that, get now a single line with Windows, which does not work
EDIT: Are you able to boot Windows independent of GRUB, ie. directly from the firmware boot menu?
I've tried F12 key, found a menu, started on the HD, found a new menu corresponding with the EFI directories (arch_grub, Microsoft....). Microsoft entry sent me on... grub menu
EDIT: Can you try (note the extra line : "set gfxpayload=keep")
It's time for diner (i'm in France). I'll see this in the next hour.
    Many thanks
Seems like the actual Windows bootmgfw.efi was overwritten by grubx64.efi or something else. In the boot menu Windows's entry (created by Windows installer) is usually titled "Windows Boot Manager".
    EDIT:
Try this. Copy the files from Windows's C:\Windows\Boot\EFI to <EFISYS>/EFI/Microsoft/Boot/ . Overwrite any exisitng files, and make sure <EFISYS>/EFI/Microsoft/Boot/BCD file exists. That is the Windows equivalent of grub.cfg (although BCD cannot be read easily since it is not a text file). Try your menuentry again.

  • New to Solaris - dual boot question

I have been using OpenSolaris on my ThinkPad T400s, dual booting with Windows 7. I want to give Solaris 10 a try. I've had it running in Virtual Box under OS X for a while, and I think I'm comfortable enough to try it out on my ThinkPad. Here is my question: will the Solaris Interactive installer let me install Solaris 10 in my existing OpenSolaris partition? And if it does, will it modify the bootloader so that I can still dual boot with Windows 7? I dont want to have to destroy partitions and re-install Windows. Once its on my hard drive, I can add myself as a user, install the Intel 5300 wireless driver, etc... Anyone have any other issues with Solaris 10 on a T400s?

Okay, well as usually happens, when I resort to help I end up solving my own problem.
In this case however, I still don't have a good grasp of what is going on.
I deleted the partition table with sgdisk --zap-all /dev/sda and then used gdisk to recreate it, specifically setting the code for /dev/sda1 to ef00.
I then reformatted the FAT partition, leaving the other one alone. After mounting /dev/sda1 to /boot and reinstalling linux and grub, I ran:
    grub-install --target=x86_64-efi --efi-directory=$esp --bootloader-id=arch_grub --recheck
as described in the wiki, and
    grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg
And it worked, including automatically detecting Windows on the other drive. Not sure what went wrong the first time but I'm glad to get it working.

  • Can I share a library between two installations of iTunes on a dual-boot PC

    Hi,
I would like to dual boot between Windows XP and Windows 7 (x64). If I install iTunes under both versions of Windows can I configure them to share the same iTunes library on disk?
Ie, when add music and create playlists under Windows XP; then boot across to Windows 7, I'd expect iTunes there to instantly see the same new music and playlist information.
To make this simpler I'd like to store my music library on an "E:" volume that has the same drive letter under both XP and 7.

a couple of things - to do this all macs must have the same version of iPhoto
If you are using the Time Capsule for Time Machine you should not put your iPhoto library on the same volume - you either need to create a disk image on the TC for your iPhoto library or partition the TC so there is a TM volume and another one for iPhoto
