G4-1117DX CD/DVD drive not functioning

So I should say that this CD drive has never really worked all that great from the get go.  I never really bothered to try to fix it till now (Two years later). So I am having trouble with the CD drive not reading any CD. Device Manager says that it is functioning and I have uninstalled it and installed it again. I have checked drivers for Highend Filters and Lowend Filters. I have replaced the CD drive with a new one, same model. I have searched high and low for an possible answer and I have found nothing. So this is my last hope.
One thing that I have tried to test is going into Command and typing:diskpart. The screen moves on to say
Microsoft DiskPart version 6.1.7601
Copyright (C) 1999-2008 Microsoft Corporation
On computer : xxxxxxxxxx(my name of the laptop)
Then nothing else, and it just sits here. I don't really hear the CD driving spinning up and when I do try to load a CD into the computer and open it. It loads very slowly all the way to the end then it just sits at the last 2% and then freezes.
I am trying to turn this P.O.S. laptop into a work laptop. I am almost at the point where I am going to go get a USB CD drive and try to see if I can make it work. I'm trying to also install a brand new hard drive and that is really what is the big hang up.
Update: I finally got the command to let me enter
DISKPART> (I typed in) List Volume
Now it is trying to load the information. I would have to say it has been about 45 minutes before I got the command prompt to get this far. I am sure this is not normal. Again, the plea is the same.  HELP! Thanks

Hi
Thats very strange.
For me your description sounds like hardware malfunction but I cannot believe that this could happen after using the drive only two times.
You said you have tried using the Knoppix CD. How about Toshiba recovery CD?
Is it possible to read this CD?
In my operational experience not all medium are compatible! Its possible that the drive could not read or write some not supported CDs or DVDs.
So what to say in the user manual you should find a index with compatible and supported CD/DVD.
This CDs and DVDs should run for sure.
The mentioned CD/DVD manufacturers are unknown to most peoples but these are ONLY manufacturers and not vendors like i.e TDK.
Mostly one CD/DVD manufacturer provides the medium for several vendors!
So finally I would recommend checking the supported CD and if it will not run contact the ASP for a help. Maybe the drive must be replaced.
Good luck

  • Dc/dvd drive not functioning and not recognized in device manager after installing Windows 7 OS

I have an HP Pavilion laptop, model # dv9617nr, which was originally loaded (from the factory) with Windows Vista.  I upgraded the OS to Windows 7 a few months ago, and initially, everything worked fine.  Within the last month, however, my DVD/CD ROM optical drive stopped working and is not recognized in Explorer, and does not show up in Device Manager.  I have tried a number of fixes from this forum and the Microsoft Windows 7 forums, with no positive effect.  I should note that upon inserting a disc in the drive, everything sounds normal (device spins and the external LED lights up) but nothing happens and the unit shuts down.
I have no idea if this is a software or a hardware issue.  I did check the HP website for software and driver updates for my model and the Windows7 OS, but HP has no update for this PC running this OS.  ANY help is greatly appreciated.

  • DVD Drive Not Functioning Properly

    Hello,
Earlier tonight i created a Burn Folder for some music, and it was set up to burned onto a Data DVD. I inserted the disc, and OSX acknowledged it, and asked what i wanted to do with the disc. When i selected "Open Finder" i get a pop-up box stating:
"The Disc Cannot Be Used Because It Is Not Recognized"
I've checked multiple times, and used multiple times, all the discs i've tried are brand new, and these DVDs have worked for me in the past.
If anyone can shed some light on this situation it would be very helpful.
    Thanks for reading.

The Apple superdrive was designed to work only with retina MBPs and MBAs.  However you can get it to work with other Macs by using these directions:

  • Windows 7 install stops at "CD/DVD driver not found"

When trying to install Windows 7 with boot camp, all goes well until it stops and gives me the "CD/DVD driver not found". I have a mid 2010 Mac Pro with a 500 GB SSD drive. I have burned a DVD at 1X from a iso file.
    Thanks

Can you verify the MD5/SHA1 of the DVD with the ISO using OS X 'openssl md5' or the M$ FCIV tool? The source of your ISO should be able to provide MD5/SHA1.
    OS X Example
    openssl md5 ~/Desktop/GRMCPRXVOL_EN_DVD.cdr
    MD5(/Users/MyName/Desktop/GRMCPRXVOL_EN_DVD.cdr)= 977f4f0f1400be91855789213e07b031
    Windows FCIV example
    D:\>C:\"Program Files (x86)"\FCIV\fciv
// File Checksum Integrity Verifier version 2.05.
    Usage:  fciv.exe [Commands] <Options>
    Commands: ( Default -add )
-add    <file | dir> : Compute hash and send to output (default screen).
                    dir options:
                    -r       : recursive.
                    -type    : ex: -type *.exe.
-exc file: list of directories that should not be computed.
-wp      : Without full path name. ( Default store full path)
-bp      : specify base path to remove from full path name
-list            : List entries in the database.
            -v               : Verify hashes.
                             : Option: -bp basepath.
            -? -h -help      : Extended Help.
    Options:
            -md5 | -sha1 | -both    : Specify hashtype, default md5.
-xml db                 : Specify database format and name.
To display the MD5 hash of a file, type fciv.exe filename

    Hi Virendrasingh,
Thank you for visiting the HP Support Forums and Welcome. I have read your thread on your HP Notebook and CD/DVD not working correctly.  I would perform a hardware test.  Where did the CD come from? Were you having issues with the CD ROM before?  I would be happy to assist if needed as there are many models of HP Notebook,  I would need the model number. How Do I Find My Model Number or Product Number?
Please respond with which Operating System you are running:
Which Windows Operating System am I running?
    Please let me know.
    Thanks.

    tcrite,
Sounds like a bad drive...I would get a replacement. According to Accelerate Your Mac database, it should work without issue.
Just enter the model number of the drive and select your Powerbook G3 2000, and you will see four reports on this model.

  • My dvd drive not recognized in device manager, getting the yellow explanation mark.

my dvd drive not recognized in device manager, getting the yellow explanation mark. Tried uninstallingdevice drive and scanning for new hardware. scanned for updates, etc. I getting no results. The laptop is a Pavilion DV5. Thanks

    Hi,
It could be that the drive has a Hardware issue, but try the following.
From the Start Menu, open All Programs, open Accessories, right click the Command Prompt and select 'Run as Administrator'.  In to the prompt type the following command and hit enter.
sfc /scannow                 ( note that there is a space between sfc and the / )
Let the process complete, then type exit and hit enter.
Next, open Device Manager, right click the DVD drive and select Uninstall.  When this has completed, restart the notebook and let Windows rediscover the device and check.

  • HT5639 after The Boot Camp for Windows 8? DVD Drive Not Recognized or Reading CD/DVD

after i made The Boot Camp Setup  for running Microsoft Windows 8? DVD Drive Not Recognized or Reading CD/DVD

    thanks for the response
    1. Yeah I thought that's a mandatory thing because i need to be able to control the brightness with my keyboard, updated graphics card, boot camp control panel, etc
    2. No there's no enable for this because Windows 8 recognizes it as a "disconnected device" and asks me to reconnect the dvd drive to the machine (which it obviously already is).
    3. Ive tried those before, also even editing the registry but it didnt work.
It's weird because it never happened before on Snow Leopard » Lion bootcamp driver updates. Just in Mountain Lion

Hi Albos, This is a known problem. These superdrives die after a while. See the various threads on this site and the internet. I have the same problem with my Imac 20" 2.16 ghz. Just wants to burn and read cd's. Its has to do with the laser. For DVD an CD are two different laser and the one for DVD's has probably died in yours (as it did in mine). I bought an external LG burner and problem solved. (And a lot cheaper than replacing the superdrive)
    Hope this helps you.

  • EMac External LACIE DVD Drive not reading.

eMac External LACIE DVD Drive not reading.
    eMac 700 MHz running OS X 4.4
Came without DVD or modem internal
    Has 256mb memory
Bought a used Lacie 1394 Firewire DVR External.
Was able to burn DVD’s and CD’s with Toast 6 Light.
Cannot find the “DVD Player” on the hard drive.
    It will read data DVD.
eMac will not read any movies burnt or bought.
I was told I probably need more memory?
Thought running IDVD would fix the problem.
    No Soap.
This machine was giving external modem problems before Tiger was installed.
Before we spend more money or just get ride of the eMac.
    What is the DVD problem?
This same Lacie burner reads and writes DVD and CD fine with our iMac 450 DV 320mb memory. Running 9.2 and X.3

OS X 10.3.x / 10.4.x natively support data burning to external DVD drives but video payback requires software such as iDVD which isn't installed by default on models without an internal DVD drive (the installer sees no internal drive and thinks it's unnecessary). Try downloading VLC Player and see if that will let you play movies.

  • "valid dvd driver not found"

I have a Powerbook G4 12"--has always worked without problem.
However, this am tried to play DVD--got the error message "valid DVD drive not found". No driver seen in system profiler.
There is no CD or DVD stuck.
Have gone through the workarounds suggested in discussions--open firmware ejects etc...
Has anyone found a solution other than paying $500 to replace the drive?
    Many thanks

First see if the issue is user or system related. Go to Apple menu -> System Preferences -> Accounts and add an administrator account, and log into it after logging out from the Apple menu.
If that doesn't work, try locating a preference in the System/Library or Hard Drive -> Library for com.apple.dvdplayer and removing it. Same for cache files.
If it still doesn't work, try VideoLan Client:

  • CD/DVD drive not recognized on my HP laptop

Hi all, Sorry to post yet another thread on the issue but I've tried just about everything that I've read up on I think.  I have a HP Pavilion DV6809wm, running Vista 32 bit.  I go into Device Manager and there is no Optical drive listed.  I have removed the drive itself, rebooted and reinserted the drive and to no avail.  I looked for lower and upper filters in the registry: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} but did not have any to delete.  I also tried running Microsoft Fix-it on my computer and all it could tell me was there was no drive found.  I searched for drivers for my optical drive (HP AD-7560A) but could not install them because there is no drive.  I am up to date on my Windows updates and even uninstalled all of my Sims 3 packs because I thought an update to that was causing a conflict or something.  I found and deleted a SecuRom (?) folder in my registry that someone posted should be deleted that games sometimes install to prevent burning or something, I can't remember.  Still no optical drive.  I'm sure it's a software issue because sometimes (rarely) it does work briefly but then goes unresponsive.  I found that when I manually remove the drive and insert it, it tends to at least open and close but is still not listed in device manager.  I have thought about buying a new drive but am not sure if that will even fix the issue.  Please, any insight would be appreciated at this point!

im having the same problem with a computer i was given to fix. i still cannot get it to function.. it is completely unresponsive when windows is loaded.. doesnt even eject as if there wasnt any power to the drive.. when i restart the computer i do get power to the drive while bios is loading and i am able to open the tray with the eject button but as soon as the windows logo appears  it becomes completely dead as if there is no power.. i have booted to windows without the drive inserted and then insert the drive and i am able to get the drive to eject via the eject button but it does not read any discs..
i have tried booting to the OS disc but when i get to the boot menu the only option available is the internal HD.. all settings are correct in bios to boot to the internal drive but never gives me that option..
I know the dvd drive functions as i tried it in another laptop and it works fine..
I would like some insight on this as well.. im just starting to believe there is something wrong with it internally on the motherboard or somehing..
I have also tried booting to an external dvd drive and no luck there either
I have also updated the bios hoping that would solve the problem but that did not help either.. i have tried the registry trick as well and no luck.. even besides that the drive should boot from bios regardless if something is screwy in the os
