G4, 400Mhz,  OS X, (10.4.6) Disk insertion not readable messsage.

I've installed an internal secondary hard drive, 120GB, Barracuda 7200 RPM to my G4 which contains a 10GB hard drive as master drive. I'm trying to install a second hard drive as a slave but I keep getting a Disk insertion not readable message. The computer recognizes the new HD but won't initailize. I tried swapping jumper location but to no avail. I'm at my wits end, please help.

That is an older G4... and Disk Utility launches, you try to use the Erase or Partition and it fails?
Master should be on the end of the IDE chain, as well as jumpered as master or even "master with slave."
Try booting from Tiger DVD with just the 120 GB drive, and set as master or master only. See if you can do it that way. Or just boot from DVD first and see if it will let you. Sometimes works.
Also, you could try setting both drives to Cable Select and see.
10GB was/is small and slow, you should see a real nice boost. If you want to add more drives, consider SATA and then you can use larger and faster drives.

  • My Book and disk inserted not readable

Whenever I boot my Mac  OS 10.9X system, I see the error message: "the disk you inserted was not readable by this computer." My BOOK is working and is use for my Time Machine. I am given a choice to "eject, or ignore."  I have used both to get rid of the message.  I have tried to update the firmware for my WD MY (the only external drive connected to my system.), but WD tells me that MAC OS is managing MY BOOK which is connected via FIREWIRE port.  Is the message I am seeing associated with the MAC OS system?  Have you any suggestions to get rid of this annoying message?

    Hello Harold,
Thank you for the details of the issue you are experiencing with your external hard drive.  I found an article with steps you can take to further isolate and troubleshoot this issue.
I recommend following the steps in the section titled "Top troubleshooting tips" in the following article:

  • Disk insertion not readable

Lately, my iPod mini has been making funny noises, and whenever I turn it on, the exclamation mark folder error pops up, and then my iPod shuts off. I read in the support section to charge it first, but when I plugged it into my computer, an error popped up ( on my computer screen). It says:
    Disk Inserion
The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer.
On my ipod scheen, it keeps flashing from the battery charger icon, to the apple logo, and to the folder exclamaion mark error, and the do not disconnect symbol.
I have no idea what is going on, so could someone please help me!

Hello, sorry I did not make this clear. The file I have to remove is a driver named 'LexarFilterScheme.kext' found in the main System/Library/ Extention folder. Delete this file, you may have to put in your password to be able to do this. Then re-boot and you should have your DVD player back in action.
This seems to fix the DVD issues, but the next time I wish to use the secure vault of the Lexar Jump Drive I have to re-install the driver. You can use the drive with no problems if you do not install the secure vault driver.
This conflict is with OS X (all) and OS 9.

You can't reformat it and not wipe everything on it.
Have you tried a different USB port?
Only other option, back it up on a different computer.

  • The disk is not readable

Hi everyone, I store a lot of my stuff on my external hard drive. However this morning it wouldn't mount. Instead I got this message
The same message pops up if I try connecting it to other computers. If i open Disk Utility it looks like this
If anyone knows what I need to do, please tell me. I have a lot of very important files on it that are not backed up, since I recently lost my back up disk.
    Thank you, I'm desperate, Sebastian

DiskWarrior usually has a better chance of fixing such problems. But no guarantee, and it will cost you about $80 to find out. When DW works, it's absolute magic, because it just fixes things back to the way they were. And for some reason, it is able to fix things that Apple's free DiskUtility can't:
    http://www.alsoft.com/DiskWarrior/
Data Rescue II from ProSoft has a good chance of recovering important files if the disk can't be repaired:
    http://www.prosofteng.com/
You can download a demo version that can show you what files can be recovered. Then pay and register to actually complete the recovery.
You have to have room on another hard disk to put the files you recover with Data Rescue.

  • Snow Leopard disk is not readable

My Imac and MacbookPro is spitting the Snow Leopard disk. When I insert the disk, the machine makes some noise and then spits it out. Does anyone have any solution ?

Try starting up to the disk. No luck? Go to an Apple Store and get a replacement on the spot in all likelihood.

  • "Disk not readable...", Verify & Repair fail, Zero Out, HFS+ still fail

First, a time machine error came up saying the volume could not be found. Tried disk verify, disk repair (in disk utility) restarting, reconnecting, but to no avail. On restarting, computer says "Disk was not readable by this computer." I then Zeroed out all the data and reformatted the drive to Mac OS Extended (Journaled). TM worked for most of the day until tonight when another error message came up saying that the next backup failed because it required 168GB, but only 49GB was available. Yet I had done virtually nothing since the last backup the hour earlier. I clicked "Back up Now" to try and get it to maybe re-evaluate the situation and maybe do the backup, but instead, I get the error that I got before - "The volume could not be found" (or something to that effect). Upon restarting, I again get "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer".
Is there something I am doing wrong? What can I do to fix this, or prevent this from happening later?

This is what the error message was before, and is what it is now.
You had these sorts of errors, then zeroed-out the drive, now you have them again?
There's only one conclusion: your drive is failing. They don't always just crash and burn.
Note that the volume name should be "Time Machine", but Disk Utility sees it as "disk2s1" for some reason.
    That's it's internal name to OSX. Use +System Profiler+ (Apple menu, +About this Mac,+ then +More Info.+
Look in the sidebar for FireWire or USB (whichever it is), select it, and you'll see disk2s1 listed as BSD name.
Time Machine Buddy seems to freeze most of my other widgets (can't type in calculator, can't delete Time Machine Buddy). It doesn't seem to do anything either, It just sits there saying "Backup Status" and "Messages" but no messages, just "....".
That's not normal, if you've had a successful backup recently, or one currently in progress.
An earlier post had a similar problem, because somehow he didn't have permission to read his own system log. From the Finder menubar, select Go, then +Go to folder,+ then type /var/log
That should list, among other things, system.log Double-click it. If nothing shows in the center portion, post back and we'll fix it.
But your main problem is an unreliable drive.

  • Disk Not Readable? What!

Aloha all. I searched for info in the Tiger forums, as well as here before posting, but came up empty so I'm gonna start a new topic. Here goes...
I copied a bunch of songs (all legal downloads, & imports from my personal cd collection) and burned them to a DVD disk, which is an option from iTunes. Burning went smoothly, not to long, etc.. I then re-inserted the disk later in the day, and got "disk is not readable, would you like to reformat, yadda, yadda. My question is why would a disk that was burned on my mac not be readable on the same mac that burned it? Part two. Is there a way to fix this bizarre behavior?
I did a little experiment and did the same procedure using OS9 on my son's G4 and it worked fine. Any info, tips, suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    Mahalo in advance, JB

    Anyone?

  • Disk Insertion Failure

    Please help...
My friends Gen3 ipod is sick
I plug it into her powerbook G4 and get a "Disk Insertion" error that states the disk is not readable by this computer. So I select Initialize. The Disk utility appears and I select first aid and verify disk and get this error
Underlying task reported failure on exit
1hfs volume checked- volume needs repair
Then I repair disk and get ”first aid failed”
Underlying task reported failure on exit
1hfs volume checked- 1 volume could not be repaired because of an error
What Can I do next? Oh it has a 18.5gb capacity but only 12.1 is available and there are 0 songs...

The first step would be to use whatever tools might be available from Seagate to determine if the drive is having a hardware problem. If it's not a hardware problem, then, it's likely time to bring out the heavy duty disk repair utilities that are available for the Mac OS. I've had good luck in the past with Disk Warrior (www.alsoft.com) and Tech Tool Pro (www.micromat.com).

  • Disk not readable - now programmes freezing

I recently used a new GoFlex Seagate external HD and had problems with it from the outset - perhaps I didn't format it correctly for mac. Statered getting 'disk is not readable', eventually sorted the disk out with disk utility so I can use it but kept getting the disk not readable alert even if the disk was not inserted. I've zapped the PRAM and reset the SMC, now not getting the disk alert but the compter keeps freezing. It only happens in some programmes, usually in Lightroom 4 which I use 90% of the time. I have to do a force shut down, then it'll work fine for about 30 min before freezing again. Seems fine if I just use it with Chrome.
Many thanks for any help you can give.

    Weird.
You did some good troubleshooting. How stable does it feel when you boot the computer to safe mode?
Also sometimes stability issues can be user specific, so maybe its not the program itself causing a problem or the operating system. But maybe something else like start up items, or your user cache and plists may need to be troubleshot.
There was something I had seen from Apple about how to do safe mode and what it is lemme see if I can find it.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1564
this will show you how to create a new user to test with. The instructions are for 10.6 but the steps are the same.
    Lemme know how it goes!

  • IPod Error Message: "The disk could not be read from or written to."

    Hello!
I was syncing my sister's video iPod (30GB) and this error message pops up "Attempting to copy to the disk. "SARAH'S IPO" failed. The disk could not be read from or written to."
I have restored it three times already, but once it starts putting the music and files back onto the iPod it pops up with that error message. I have updated to the latest version of iTunes and iPod software available. My OS is Windows XP.
Is this something serious? Will I be able to fix it myself or will I need to send it in to be fixed by Apple? Will that be expensive? We didn’t get the Apple replacement plan. D=
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance. ^_^
    PowerBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.3)   15" PowerBook 1.5 GHz PowerPC G4, 1.5GB RAM - Windows XP with iPod 5 Generation

Okay I went thru that entire list and here's what I got...
    (1) My OS is XP and is running fine.
    (2) I've updated my windows
    (3) I don't know of any software that might be interfering.
    (4) There are no damaged files.
    (5) My Windows hard-drive is not damaged and I've tried restoring my iPod's disk thru iTunes but it still doesn't work.
    (6) I don't have an iPod photo and I can't find the folder to delete the cache if if I did.
    (7) The USB cord is firmly connected into my USB port and my iPod
    (8) My music is on my external hard-drive so I need to keep 3rd-party hardware connected
    (9) I will try another USB cord to see if that works.
Is there anything else that I can do? Can Apple fix this?
    Please let me know.

It's so simple, dont worry. Just connect your ipod to the computer. iTunes must open. In iTunes clcik on the small ipod icon which appears at the right bottom of the itunes window. click on that icon and another window with some options will be opened. Click on "enable disk use" and make this selection marked and click ok.
    it'll certainly help!

Suddenly my Ipod will not sync. The error message says "...disk could not be read from or written to..." We tried the HOLD TOGGELING. But that didn't work. It won't let me restore the Ipod either because it says other programs are currently in use.

  • Error Message: "Disk could not be read from or written to".

New 5th Gen. was downloading CD's I loaded into iTunes just fine; when uploading tunes into iPod yesterday this error message appeared: "Attempting to copy to the disk (iPod name) failed. Disk could not be read from or written to". Restored iPod with 1/10/06 update of iPod Install; using iTunes 6.0.2; operating system 10.3.9. Frustrated. iPod useless at this point. Anyone found a fix to this vexing problem?
    Thanks,

Thanks Jeff. Only thing that rings true is updating OS; when I tried to downoad 10.4 message said I 'could not on this computer'. Since I purchased and installed 10.3 a year ago I don't understand. Also, iPod was downloading perfectly until two days ago when -36 appeared. Bummer. I am not a techie, Apple tech support does not have a clue, and iPod is useless. Ideas?
