G4 700 freeze after 1 gig ram update, does it need firmware update?

Greetings Mac Users,
Mainly a PC user here so I will break it down as best as I can. I bought this iMac G4 700mhz with a hard drive failure for 15 bucks. I put in a Seagate 120gig-7200rpm-8meg cash, a new PRam battery, and OSX 10.4.11 Tiger (formerly OSX 10.1.5 stock). I was very surprised with how well the little thing ran. So I decided to upgrade the ram to 1 gig (2X512 sticks) from 384 megs. I went to a place called We Love Macs .com. They guaranteed their ram to work in my machine . . . which it does . . . in a way.
The computer recognizes the full 1 gig of ram in OSX 10.4.11. It even works for like three to five minutes . . . then it freezes. When I say it freezes . . . it windows 95 style freezes. Everything stops . . . the machine is not attempting to do anything.
With that being said I know the issue is the Ram. But since We Love Macs are mac people and I know the ram works, I find it hard to believe it is a compatibility issue (if it is the ram goes back). I feel this is probably a firmware thing. I am sure the Mac OSX 10.4.11 software updates do not update firmware (although I may be wrong, remember PC person here).
So . . . if it is firmware . . . where do I get it? The only firmware I can find on this site or on Google is for slot loading iMacs (which as I am sure you all know the iMac G4 700 is not). It seems like the internet is devoid of all iMac G4 700/800 firmware updates.
*Bottom Line:*
Are there firmware updates that will fix this problem and if so where are they OR do I need to send this ram back to the nice people at We Love Macs .com because of a compatibility issue?
Any assistance you Mac users can give me in this situation is most adequately appreciated. Please do not hold it against me that I am a PC user . . . if this iMac pans out one way or another with a full 1 gig of ram . . . I will be giving it to my elderly mother (she loves the thing). *BUT I PROMISE* that I will be purchasing one of the new Mac Minis and mount it on TOP of my PC Rig as my full time productivity machine. This G4 700mhz has shown me the light.
Sincerely,
Barry

There is no firmware update involved, or available.
So, that should not be a cause of the issue faced here.
In those I've owned (well, only 5) that hasn't come up
as a user-upgrade issue or concern. And friends who
bought them when new, still own them, and upgraded
the OS X from original to Leopard 10.5 when possible,
have never needed (nor was it available) new firmware.
So, maybe it is the RAM configuration.

update whose intent is to help fix a graphics issues in some G4
iMac models, may apply. "Leopard Graphics Update 1.0"
Good luck & happy computing!

• HT2311 boot freezing after itunes 10.7 update

after installing nad rebooting my system with the new version of itunes. i get nothing but the grey apple screen and the wheel of eternity.
whats the best way to handle this?
running 10.7.(current) on 1,1 mac pro, ssd, and 10 gigs ram.
i unplugged all drives and tried and tried as well. any suggestions on getting back up and running?

this happenned to me also.  Also did the iOS 6 update....so not sure which caused the issues. Had to restore phone and backup.  First issues I found were that no music was put back on my iPhone. When I went to iTunes on my PC, notices I had lost my previous playlists.  Tried a suggested fix of dragging itunes Library files to desktop and importing them back into itunes, but got an error (-50). Not sure what else to do... to recover lost playlists.

• Progress Bar freeze after 4.2.1 Update - any news?

Hey Guys,
any news on the progress par freeze after the installation of 4.2.1 on the iPad?
After a horrible 8 hours(!) Backup phase, my iPad 3G 32 Gigabyte freezes after the progress bar reaches 80%. I tried to do a hard reset but it would just stuck at the same stage again after rebooting. My iPhone 4 synced just fine (5min. Backup-Phase to the max) and runs 4.2.1 without any hiccups. But the iPad, being once the love of my life, drives me MAD!!!!!
What did you do? Try to sync it again or just wait some days until the progress bar advances? I`m fed up with OS Updates for now... HEEEELLLLPPP!

Well, that didn't work. But in the process I cleaned up the folders that house my iTunes movies and music get rid of dupes, stuff I didn't want, and so on. However, I did find that I forgot to uninstall WiFi Sync before trying the upgrade. I downloaded the uninstaller and ran it, rebooted, and did the upgrade. Now my iPad is back. I hadn't realized that I had to uninstall WiFi Sync to upgrade the iPad.....

Hello Malith Ratnayake,
After changing the old RAM by the new one, this issue occurs?
If the issue doesn’t occur when you change back to use old ram, I think it is the RAM hardware issue.
Please contact the hardware manufacturer for better support.

• IChat freezes after 10.5.5. update

Since upgrading to 10.5.5, I have experienced freezes while video chatting in iChat. These freezes happen, on average, every 10-20 minutes. I never had this problem with 10.5.4. Anyone else noticing this? Any ideas of what may be causing this, or it just a bug that I should hope will be fixed in 10.5.6?

Just wanted to add that I am experiencing this too. Everything was fine until the combined update to 10.5.5 and QT 7.5.5. Now my video freezes after about 30 seconds into a chat. The sound keeps going for a while. I need to force exit iChat to quit. The are a lot of suggestions on these and other forums about how to fix this: limiting streaming bandwidth, re-installing QT, deleting plist files, etc. Nothing seems to work. Here's what I know so far:
1. Everything was fine until 10.5.5/QT7.5.5 update
2. Not all connections fail. One buddy never fails, one other always does.
3. Test user [email protected] freezes for me 9 out of 10 times.
4. The 10th time it's fine.
5. Shutting off WeatherDock does not fix it.
6. QT streaming rate throttling in preferences does not fix it.
7. Bandwidth limiting in iChat prefs don't fix it.
8. Re-installing QT does not fix it.
9. Re-installing QT in safe mode after fixing disk permissions doesn't fix it.
10. No combination of the above fixes it.
This is a problem the NEEDS TO BE FIXED, Apple are you listening?
I bought a mac because they said "it just works", I guess not.
I suggest we all send more complaints to Apple. I let the app debugger send its logs to apple a few times per day.

• Constant Kernal Crashes after 8 gig RAM card added

Hello everyone - I have a mid 2010 27" iMac and just added 16 gig of new ram (first two slots came with 2 gig each and I bought and had installed two more 8 gig - so I can run Final Cut Pro X) Well, after the new RAM was installed by an apple certified dealer - it kernel crashed about 5 times randomly, which it had never done before - It was obvious it was caused by the new RAM - I took it back and they replaced it - and it has now kernal crashed 6 times - Are 8 Gig Ram cards not compatible with 2010 imacs? These guys seem like they know what they are doing - but enough is enough - I know in Apple's literature they mention that only 2 and 4 gig upgrades are possible - but they said the 8 gigs just came out - what do you guys think?

And your iMac bought in 2010 is actually a late 2009 model. Only the mid 2011 models will support 8gig sticks. Take it back.

• My iMac G5 17 inch 1.8Ghz freezes after 10.4.11 Update

Hi, I recently bought a used iMac G5 17 inch 1.8Ghz 2004 model and it was working fine until I updated from 10.4 to 10.4.11 in order to update iTunes and get a decent browser. It freezes either immediately upon startup or within 2 minutes and I have to power off by pressing and holding the power button for 5 seconds. I thought something had gone wrong so I zeroed out and wiped the hard disk and reinstalled 10.4. After I applied the 10.4.11 update, The same thing happened with the freezing etc. My friend told me it could be a bad sector on the hard drive so I bought a new one and while I was at it, I upgraded the ram up to 1GB. I also had it checked for bad caps and found none. When performing the 10.4.11 update, same thing. The iMac runs fine in 10.4 so I see no reason why it doesn't after the update. Does anyone have any idea about whats going on? Thanks

General advice on updating Tiger:
It is worth noting that it is an extreme rarity for updates to cause upsets to your system, as they have all been extensively beta-tested, but they may well reveal pre-existing ones, particularly those of which you may have been unaware. If you are actually aware of any glitches, make sure they are fixed before proceeding further.
So before you do anything else:
If you can, make a full backup first to an external hard disk. Ideally you should always have a bootable clone of your system that enables you to revert to the previous pre-update state.
Turn off sleep mode for both screen and hard disk.
Disconnect all peripherals except your keyboard and mouse.
1. Repair Permissions (in Disk Utility)
2. Verify the state of your hard disk using Disk Utility. If any faults are reported, restart from your install disk (holding down the C key), go to Disk Utility, and repair your startup disk. Restart again to get back to your startup disk.
At least you can now be reasonably certain that your system does not contain any obvious faults that might cause an update/upgrade to fail.
3. Download the correct version of the COMBO update from the Apple download site. If your car runs on gasoline you would not want to fill the tank with diesel, so don’t try to install the PPC updater on an Intel Mac!
The 10.4.11 Combo Updater for PPC Macs is here:  http://support.apple.com/kb/DL170
And for Intel Macs here:  http://support.apple.com/kb/DL172
If you prefer to download updates via Software Update in the Apple menu (which would ensure that the correct version for your Mac was being downloaded), it is not recommended to allow SU to install major (or even minor) updates automatically. Set Software Update to just download the updater without immediately installing it. There is always the possibility that the combined download and install (which can be a lengthy process) might be interrupted by a power outage or your cat walking across the keyboard, and an interrupted install will almost certainly cause havoc. Once it is downloaded, you can install at a time that suits you. You should make a backup copy of the updater on a CD in case you ever need a reinstall.
Full details about the 10.4.11 update here:  http://support.apple.com/kb/TA24901?viewlocale=en_US
More information on using Software Updater here:
http://support.apple.com/kb/TA24901?viewlocale=en_US
Using the Combo updater ensures that all system files changed since the original 10.4.0 are included, and any that may have been missed out or subsequently damaged will be repaired. The Delta updater, although a temptingly smaller download, only takes you from the previous version to the new one, i.e. for example from 10.4.10 to 10.4.11. Software Update will generally download the Delta updater only. The preferable Combo updater needs to be downloaded from Apple's download site.
Now proceed as follows:
4. Close all applications and turn off energy saving and screensaver.
5. Unplug all peripherals except your keyboard and mouse.
6. Install the update/upgrade. Do not under any circumstances interrupt this procedure. Do not do anything else on your computer while it is installing. Be patient.
7. When it ask for a restart to complete the installation, click restart. This can take longer than normal, there are probably thousands of files to overwrite and place in the correct location. Do nothing while this is going on.
8. Once your Mac is awake, repair permissions again, and you should be good to go!
If your Mac seems slightly sluggish or ‘different’, perform a second restart. It can’t hurt and is sometimes efficacious!
9. Open a few of your most used applications and check that all is OK. In this connection please remember that not all manufacturers of third party applications and plug-ins, add-ons, haxies etc, will have had time to do any necessary rewrites to their software to make them compliant with the latest version of your operating system. Give them a weeks or two while you regularly check their websites for updates. This applies particularly to plug-ins for Safari 3.
N.B. Do not attempt to install two different updates at the same time as each may have different routines and requirements. Follow the above recommendations for each update in turn.
Lastly, Apple's own article on the subject of Software Update may also be useful reading:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106695
If you are updating Safari (or just have):
Input Managers from third parties can do as much harm as good. They use a security loophole to reach right into your applications' code and change that code as the application starts up.  If you have installed an OS update and Safari is crashing, the very first thing to do is clear out your InputManagers folders (both in your own Library and in the top-level /Library), log out and log back in, and try again.
So, disable all third party add-ons before updating Safari, as they may not have been updated yet for the new version. Add them back one by one. If something goes awry, remove it again and check on the software manufacturer's website for news of an update to match your version of Safari. Remember: Tiger up to 10.4.10 used Safari 2.0.4 or, if you downloaded it, Safari 3.0.3 beta. Safari 10.4.11 used Safari 3.0.4 which was not a beta. If Safari 3.1.2 on 10.4.11 is not the fastest browser you have ever used, then something is wrong!
Moreover, trying to revert to Safari 3.0.4 (or worse still, version 2) when running 10.4.11 or 10.5 can have repercussions, as Safari 3.1.1 uses a completely different webkit on which other applications like iChat, Mail and Dashboard Widgets etc also rely, and may entail you having to reinstall an earlier operating system.
Most errors reported here after an update are due to an unrepaired or undetected inherent fault in the system, and/or a third party ad-on. Two such add-on that have been frequently mentioned here for causing such problems are Piclens and Pithhelmet. If you have them, trash them.
Additional tips on software installation here:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106692
To reiterate, Input Managers reach right into an application and alter its code. This puts the behavior of the affected application outside the control and responsibility of its developers: a recipe for  problems. That's not to say that issues absolutely will ensue as a result of Input Managers, but you, as a user, must decide. If the functionality of a specific Input Manager or set thereof is really important to you, you may well choose to assume the associated risk.
Again, the advice is to remove all Input Managers from the following directories:
/Library/InputManagers
~/Library/InputManagers
especially prior to system updates (they can always be added back one-by-one later).

• Freezing after 10.7.5 update

I've got a Mid 2010 Macbook Pro 17 inch with 8GB of RAM and a 512G SSD.  Was running like a champ.  However, when I updated to 10.7.5, I've had repeated issues with apps freezing.  At first, it was only happening with Eclipse, which seemed to be resolved when I updated Eclipse.  However, about once a day, when I'm working, some app (it's happened with Dreamweaver, TextWrangler, and Firefox) will suddenly start the spinning cursor.  Mouse moves fine and I can seemingly switch apps.  However, if I go to the system menu (like to do a rebloot or force quit) I get the spinning cursor on all apps and it doesn't change until I power down and up.
Is this a known issue?  Is there a fix for this?
Any help appreciated.  Thanks!

Seeing this problem too. At first I thought it was one of my scanners, but I've removed all of those and the problem persists.
For me though, it typically works on launch. Often I'll launch, remote control a client, then as soon as I end the session, the main browser window will be frozen. Or if I launch ARD, and let it just sit, it will typically freeze within 5-10 minutes.
A full reinstall is kind of out of the question. I have so many stored templates, rebuilding all of that would be daunting. I'll probably just have to struggle by until 3.5.2.
Update: I see there's a Presets folder down in ~/Application Support/Remote Desktop/. Going to try backing up and restoring that after a reinstall. Crossing fingers...

• Macbook Freezes after 4 GB RAM upgrade

I work on many Macs for my company, and we have been upgrading our Macbooks with 4 GB of RAM standard. But this causes the screen to freeze, image to break up into different colors and locks up the whole system.
I thought it was the OCZ RAM we were using, so we switched to Crucial. But the same problem exists, and it exists on over 10 machines so it cannot be that all of this RAM is failing. This must be a problem with the unibodies or with OS X?

Please note, I am fairly new to Mac, and only found this info after much searching on-line...
I also have had problems after upgrading to 4GB of RAM, I bought Kingston from Best Buy in Edmonton, AB. I have spent a great deal of time searching for a solution, and just thought I would share what I have found.
It seems to be an issue with the NVIDIA GeForce 9400M graphics card and the way it accesses memory, and it seems to affect anything over 3GB of RAM. Now that being said, on Nvidia's website, with some searching there is a pdf document stating which RAM is compatible with this video card. I should mention that this issue also affects MacBook Pro users with the 9400/9600 graphics card. According to the pdf, my Kingston memory is not on the compatible list...I'll try to include this list:
The tables below list the SO-DIMMs that NVIDIA plans to support on their GeForce 9400M G platform.
Note: Using an SO-DIMM from this list does not imply reduced or simpler design validation on the part of the OEM. NVIDIA recommends customers to perform their full suite of memory interface design validation testing on their systems.

The first part is the manufactrer name, next is type of memory, then latency, then density, then part number.
Another solution seems to be to edit the com.Apple.Boot.plist to set maxmem to 3456, which cuts available memory after rebooting to 3.5GB, on my MacBook, I got fair results with 3072, basically 3GB, it doesn't freeze as often, although I haven't played any movies, etc, for a few days, which always seemed to lead to my freezes. But the system seems much more stable for the moment.
Another solution which I am going to test when I get home and have access to my original RAM is to put one of the 1GB sodimms which came with my machine in the first slot, and one of my Kingston modules into the other slot, I've read that this solves the problem completely. Now I realize this leaves you with 3GB Ram, not the 4 I wanted, but further research showed me that the performance hit is not that significant from 3 to 4 GB, There are a couple of websites with testing results for different RAM configurations, and for my needs, the difference is minimal, I know that may not be acceptable to everyone. If I had bookmarked one of these pages, I would include the link.
Another solution seems to be a change to one of the Kext file, link is here: http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=127611
but this is related to kext for MacOSX on a PC, and I don't know enough about dealing with kext files to feel comfortable doing things like this to my MB.
I don't know if anyone else will find this useful, but if it does, great. In the meantime, I will be able to test the 3GB RAM configuration on Friday, and will test out the MB with movies, etc and post how it goes... one test I read about is to use the program REMBER, and do multiple hard drive searches, etc while it is running, according to the website I found that on, it leads to the freezing fairly rapidly, so at least the problem can be reproducible for those who take their Mac Books or Mac Book Pros into an Apple Genius Bar or where ever so that they can see the freeze in action.
Cheers,

• Windows 8 Freezes after last "Lenovo Settings Update" anytime the pointer goes to a corner

After the most recent "Lenovo Settings Update", my Windows 8 freezes for a few minutes (minimum of two) anytime the pointer hits one of the hot corners.  The system also freezes for a couple of minutes or less when certain apps are started or the mouse clicks on certain apps.  This is a repeatable error.  I can restore the system to the setpoint previous to the "Lenovo Settings Update" and everything works fine.  re-Install the update and the problem comes back.  The system also freezes for 5-10 seconds when an e-mail message comes in and the notification appears.  Also happens under other different circumstances but the worst is when the mouse pointer goes to any "Hot Corner".  I can reset the system to the last restore point and have everything work fine but anytime I go to "Lenovo Settings", it forces the update which then creates this problem.
Has anyone else seen this issue?  I have all the updates for Windows 8 and Lenovo installed including all new Bios updates that are published.  The model is  a Lenovo ThinkPad Edge S320u (otherwise known as the "Twist". The error is repeatable in all screen modes, tablet modes and multiple monitor modes.
For now I will go back to the latest restore point but would like to see the issue resolved.
Thanks.
Bob

I had the exact same issue with the same computer (Thinkpad Twist)! Am very happy to have come accross this page through a web search.
After installing some updates through Lenovo Update App (because of a message that critical updates are available on the Lenovo Support App from Startscreen), my whole system would freeze for about two minutes when moving the cursor over any corner. This is very troublesome not only because it effectively disables the Windows 8 "hot corners" (which I didn't use much anyway, preferring to launch the tasks thus accessible differently), but mostly because it is necessary at times to access the corners, notably to close any document, webpage or other instance of any program that was open in full screen (which usually all of my docs/programs are, considering the Twist's small screensize...).
Afer reading rbagnall's post I first tried uninstalling updates through the Lenovo Update center. But there, once installed, updates don't seem to be removable. Why Lenovo? You can look at the list of installed updates but not make any change. Now I have followed rbagnall's advice and restored my computer with a restore point, sufficiently far back, as I didn't know exactly which update caused this. It worked! Not exactly pleasant, because I had to reinstall some programs and change some settings again, but the problem got resolved.
I went further and tried to see which update causes this by installing them one by one and seeing when the problem appears. The culprit seems to be "Display Mode Orientation Update for Windows 8". One needs to install the "Lenovo Power Management Driver" with it (which is actually listed under optional updates, whereas the Display Mode update is shown as a critical one, but the former is selected automatically when the later is chosen, and one cannot unselect it, a message appears then that it is necessary for the other update). So it could be that one as well (haven't checked whether installing it without the Display Mode update creates the same problem). In any case, once these are installed, the problem appears.
I have now restored my PC again to the restore point, and haven't installed any Lenovo update, not even the other critical one, as I don't know what it's for (Critical patch to fix TVSU UTS issue - I haven't had this issue, and any web entries on this I found dated back to 2009). In the optional updates there is also a BIOS update, which I had installed previously, but I don't know what it's for either. If there is anything terribly useful in either (or other optional updates), please tell me.
For now I have uninstalled the Lenovo Support Startscreen App (which seems to be more annoying than helpful), and will refrain from updating any Lenovo drivers from now, which seems to do more harm than good (everything was working fine before the update)...

• Grey Screen Freeze after 10.6.7 update

I have 2 iMacs. My wife's is 2008 3.06 Ghz 24" model with Snow Leopard. Just updated to 10.6.7, and on re-boot we entered perpetual grey screen freeze ups. Followed guidance from support article - specifically to remove peripherals (attached were 2 USB devices - HP inkjet printer and WD 500G portable HD used as Time Machine. Also connected to LAN via RJ-45) After re-boot I changed network to airport to access LAN. When I re-inserted ethernet jack the grey screen immediately came up. Tried various combinations and ethernet connect always kills machine. Any ideas? I'm holding off on 10.6.7 update for other iMac.

Because I've had strange problems with past system update downloads, I now always get my system updates from http://support.apple.com/downloads/
I always use the Update Combo version. It installs a fresh set of all previous updates as well as the new one. This gives you a fresh beginning with system 10.6.x. Since I adopted that practice, I've had no more issues with updates.
