G4 733 Quicksilver shuts down in middle of startup chime

I've installed a new 80 gb harddrive (setup as master) installed latest drivers, installed a new pioneer DVD "superdrive".....for the purpose of upgrading my OS from 9.2 to 10.4.6 "tiger".....now machine shuts down almost immediately after the startup chime sounds....Do any of y'all have any ideas on this one.....any and all suggestions would be greatly appreciated....many thanks......

Many thanks William...I had already tried that several times to no avail......But then I remembered something similar that I witnessed at a Mac store when one of the techs was "tearing his hair out" trying to figure out the solution to similar symptoms...He took the memory boards out (one at a time) and, sure enough one of them was causing the problem. I did zap the pram again after reading your comment, but it was still the same. This machine had two memory boards in it, a 128, and a 512..ALL of them must be functional, AND making a good, clean connection. Well, I took out the 128 first, cleaned it, put it back in tried startup....no change. Then I removed the 512, cleaned it, reinstalled it, and when I hit the startup button, it started so quickly, (and the superdrive disk drawer flew open) that it startled me...Problem Solved......What a Christmas present I just got. This machine had been doing really strange things for several years, but was fairly reliable on 9.2. I actually was so aggravated with the G4 that I had just bought another one like it that han a new 40 gb drive in it with OS 10.2.8 already installed along with classic. I put this 40gb HD in this computer, and the new 80 gb
in the new G4......they are both running on X now....I'm so excited, forgive me, but I feel like a kid in a candy store....Happy Holidays to all of you Yeah, MERRY CHRISTMAS and Happy NEW YEAR......thank you all

  • Quicksilver shuts down unexpectedly, but not with the case opened.

I know this is a very discussed problem, but as nobody came with a definitive solution or explanation (not even apple, witch is a very bad support behavior), here I am, with another SPOS (Sudden Power Out Syndrom) victim machine.
The problem doesn't appear to be related to CPU stress/overload, as it will occour withou any activity at all. Just turn on the computer and wait a few minutes until it shuts down by it self.
So I tried to open the case and just wait to happen again and it did not, the computer stays on. So I went to sleep and yes, in the other day it was still working. So I closed the case with the working machine and again, after a few
    minutes, it turned off.
It seems like its a heat issue, but I dont know how solve it. How can I workaround this problem? Could it be anything else than overheating?
I'm thinking of swap another 733 CPU that was in a upgraded machine and see if it deals better with a hot condition.
    Is it a dumb idea?
    What would you suggest?
    Any help is welcome.

  • Question about shutting down the middle tier while leaving the DB up

    Hi,
We just successfully upgraded 11.5.10.2 from running on 9.2.0.8 SOLARIS SPARC 32-bit to 11.2.0.1 SOLARIS SPARC 64-bit.
I am in the process of rewriting the backup scripts. We used to do a once-a-week backup (zip) of the middle tier directories,
after shutting down EVERYTHING cold (MT first, then DB listener, the DB). Our DB consultant likes hot-only backups of the
DB so we are going to keep the DB running all the time and always do hot backups from the DB, but keep MT cold backup.
We want to keep our MT cold backup so we retain our downtime window that users expect (Saturday night - Sun morning).
So my question is ---- is there any issue with shutting down the entire MT- only (adstpall.sh) -- but leaving the DB up?
When I do a adstrtal (via my script) the next morning--- everything should just start fine with no DB bonce having been done, right?
In the past, once I have the MT down, wait 5 min, kill any stray FND processes, I usually go on to bounce the database
"for good measure". I am 99% sure that I don't have to do this... and that there is no harm in "not" doing this, just need
    some confirmation.
    MH
One more piece of information - Our concurrent managers shut down cleanly almost all of the time without putting jobs on hold.
We don't have many users (< 60) and while we do have autoinvoice that runs every 5 min, I haven't had to do a big bounce
with cmclean.sql very often-- only about once or twice a year when users lock each others tables and the cleanest fix is to bounce
    everything --very rarely.

  • Mac book pro shuts down in middle of booting up

I am using a 15' MBP 2010 OS X Lion. Earlier tonight I was following advice from a cnet article on how to prepare for a clean install to Mavericks. As suggested, I started up in Safe Boot mode and ran repair permissions. After completing that I restarted the machine and now it complete shuts down in the middle of the start up process. At first I get the grey screen, apple logo, turning gear, but then a progress bar appears at the bottom of the screen. After a few minutes the fans start to really kick in and then suddenly everything shuts down.....silence.
I can start up in recovery mode and have (re)selected the start up disk, but the same issue occurs.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi mkostiuk,
If your machine is shutting down while booting with a progress bar, you may want to try using Disk Utility from Recovery Mode to see if there are any disk issues. You may find the following article helpful:

  • Quicksilver shuts down after startup chime

    Hello,
I got an old Quicksilver 2002 (933) which won't boot : it shuts down 3 or 4 seconds after the startup chime. What's wrong ?
    Thanks

Thank you for your answer, but it didn't work.
I forgot something important in my first post : the story of this Quicksilver
So yes, I just acquire this Mac, didn't work at all. It was missing a screw on the CPU card. After adding the screw, the PM booted into my Tiger DVD. I shut down the PM to close it correctly. It didn't boot anymore for this time.
I tried PRAM reset, motherboard reset. I've taken apart all I could (modem, graphic card, hard drive, ...), I've replaced the PSU, but nothing. I noticed that when I try to boot without RAM, the powermac makes one beep (no RAM installed) but don't shut down after that ! So I tried with 2 different RAM modules on every RAM slot, but it didn't work. (each RAM module is PC133 and works fine on my iMac G3 DV SE).
I think the motherboard or the CPU is screw up, but which one ? Maybe I forgot one thing to make it work ?
    Cheers, Aurélien

  • How do I restore my IPod? I shut down in middle of updating, now it's a BLANK white screen??

iPod 4th gen was manually shut down (holding both buttons down to shut off...) while it was in middle of updating to ios 6, and now every time I turn bk on, it's a blank white screen! Looks like iPod has been wiped out! Please tell me how to fix this? I hooked to Mac, and still blank screen!!!

Like I said in your previous post:
    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iPod fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - If still not successful that indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • Why does Computer shut down in middle of burning DVD?

Please help me! I am so frustrated. I have been using PE3 with no problems for over a year. This past week I downloaded the free trial version of PE4 and it kept crashing so I removed it. I made a project in PE3 and it's been crashing every time I try to burn to DVD. So I also removed and re-installed PE3 and re-created the project and once again it gets so far into the burning and then the computer shuts down. This never happened before and has only happened since I had PE4 on my machine, which I removed through add/remove programs. Any ideas as to why this is happening?

I have deleted Quicktime and checked to make sure my audio driver is up to date, it is. My video files are MPEGs and I do have some stills on the timeline but when I removed them it still crashed.
Steve - I have done everything except #1 and nothing works. I cannot burn to a folder.
Here's what's different and maybe the culprit(s). This is the first project since -
    1. I downloaded the PE4 trial version. I have since removed it and re-installed PE3 with patch. (Vista still crash)
    2. Best buy installed SP1 on my system - hmmm, could SP1 give me this issue?
    Thanks.

  • Why is my mac shutting down in middle of my age of empires 3 game. did not do this until 10.6.8 everything including the game is updated.

when i play age of empires 3 my mac shuts down for no apparent reason. Any suggestions?  10.6.8 ; 2.8 ghz; i dont know how to find any other info. This did not start until i purchased and installed snow leopard. please help me!

Do an SMC reset, which can fix problems with the system randomly shutting down:
    Shut down the computer.
    Unplug the computer's power cord.
    Wait fifteen seconds.
    Attach the computer's power cord.
Wait five seconds, then press the power button to turn on the computer.

  • IMac shuts down while updating at startup.

And it won't go past the start up screen now. The apple logo is displayed, and there is a loading bar underneath. It gets about 1/4 of the way completed, and then shuts down completely. I have a lot of work I need to finish, so any help would be greatly appreciated!

Bootup holding CMD+r, or the Option/alt key to boot from the Restore partition & use Disk Utility from there to Repair the Disk, then Repair Permissions.
If that doesn't help Reinstall the OS.

  • My laptop just shuts down completely immediately on startup.

That about covers it.  Within just a few seconds it shuts down and I have to restart, but it repeatedly shuts off.

When you say Startup..up to what point? Do you still see the Toshiba logo? If so, you can boot to BIOS by pressing F2 on the TOshiba screen. Then on the BIOS screen, press F9 to load the setup defaults, select yes then press F10, save the changes and exit. If same thing happens, you might consider doing recovery. Thats if you're still seeing something on the screen. But if your screen is completely black and you are still under warranty it would be much better to send your system to depot for diagnosis and repair.

  • Early 2009 suddenly shuts down or won't startup

Hi, I've recently been having some problems with my mac pro 2009. It will suddenly shut down and won't restart or if left for a while won't startup.
Sometimes if I press the power button it will sort of startup but then suddenly turn off during the initial powerup (before the screen turns on).
I brought it in for repair and they replace the power supply, called apple and end the end they said they reset something on the motherboard but couldn't really find what was wrong... Has anyone else had this problem and found a solution?

    Hi Phil,
Has anyone else had this problem and found a solution?
I hate to be blunt, Phil, but the real solution is to get Apple to give you a replacement. You're within your rights as a consumer to have a perfectly working Macintosh. Most of us do. I haven't read a bad report on these machines yet, but if it's not working right then something is wrong.
    Good luck.
    Steve
