G4 AGP Tower Problems :(

Hi everyone! I'm new to the forums here so if I make a newbie mistake bear with me ^_^
I acquired a used PowerMac G4 Tower with a blank hard drive (it is the one that came with the machine: Quantum Fireball 20 GB).
Specs are: AGP Graphics model, 400MHz, 512MB RAM, 20GB HD
So I went ahead and ordered an os 9.2.2 disc on ebay and bought a 10.4 disc from a local apple store.
I cannot get either operating system to install. I am able to boot up from both discs. However, once I click install the machine freezes and the usb power cuts out (logitech optical mouse and apple white keyboard stop responding, neither are wireless)
Now, the disc I'm using for OS 9 is a gray eMac restore CD. I know, I should get a retail 9 disc (white + orange), but it installed fine on both my imac tray-loaders and I read in the readme file that it should work with a powermac g4 as well. Yet, the exact same freezing problem also occured with a retail tiger disc!
I believe that my firmware needs an update, but I cant install it until I am able to boot from os 9 on the hd. Also, I have pressed the reset button on the motherboard to zap the pram but that didn't help. I can get into open firmwire if that matters.
I can't figure out whether this is a software or hardware problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Further machine specs are in my profile under biography.

PC Fan, welcome, here are a few things you might try.
1. Since you are able to boot from the OS 9 CD open Disk First Aid from the Applications/Utilities folder. Then run the Verify to ensure that the drive is OK. Now run the Disk Repair and see if this helps.
2. If not, then open Drive Setup and Initialize the hard drive. At this point I would recommend that you use Zero all Data, it takes more time but this is time well spent.
3. If you still can not install the OS try connecting the two computer together via a Crossover cable. If the hard drive of the G4 mounts on the iMac desktop you can install the OS 9 to the iMac and copy it to the G4 via an Ethenet cable.
When I was visiting a friend about a year ago I encounter a very similar situation. We installed OS 9.1 on a PM 6500, then moved the hard drive to a G4 GE, booted the G4 from the 4 BG 6500 HD, updated the firmware then installed the new larger hard drive and OS X. The G4 would not boot from the hard drive with the 9.2.2 that was already installed on the 6500. We think that this was a combination of the processor upgrade and the OS 9 Helper. So a fresh copy of the OS on the iMac could be the answer.

    Agp 8x Problem
    Hi there,
    my system is;
    MSI KT4V (MS-6712) 8X support via chipset
    512 400mhz ram
    asus 9520 fx 5200 128 megabyte ram (8X)
    AMD athlon XP 2500
Now , the problem is when I install agp drivers for via chipset (4 in 1) the games starts quitting, giving C++ error, or flickers. If I dont install this driver everytihng is fine. I mean I bought 8X support cards but I cant use them???
When I go to display settings ---advance and click on the "GeForce fx 5200" tab it writes that AGP: PCI mode
But when I install "4 in 1 drivers", in the same place it writes "AGP 8X"
    Now what should I do??
    thanx anyway '

Hm, I found this info on Viaarena's forum, http://forums.viaarena.com/messageview.cfm?catid=30&threadid=51548
I'm not good at AGP technology, but what I take in from it, is that the AGP port is fully opened already, and 4X or 8X AGP don't make a difference. The roof is already reached, you could say.
As close as I can find out you have a XFX, no sorry, a PINE, no sorry, a AZZA mainboard with a KT400 (no 'a') chipset that 'offically' supports the 100 (200) and 133 (266) mhz buss speeds.
    http://www.azzaboard.com/kt400alh.html
Into this board you have inserted a 166 (333) mhz processor (AMD Athlon XP 2500+).
So, in effect, your AGP buss speeds are beyond spec.
Usually Nvidia cards are quite 'forgiving' in this respect, but you have to turn off both 'fastwrites' and 'sideband addressing'.
SO, rather than being a VIA 'problem', it is an incompatable hardware 'problem'.

  • AGP 4x problem?

Just installed a GF4 Ti4200 128Mb card, and d/loaded the latest VGA drivers from MSI (but not BIOS update - if there is one!)  I'm running Win98 SE on a PIII/866 with 256Mb. Seems to be working except I can't change the AGP setting in the 'MSI Information' dialogue box from its default(?) value of 1x.  (My M/B BIOS is set to AGP 4x and my VGA setting is set to AGP).  In fact, I can't change ANY of the settings on the 'MSI Information' dialogue box.
Running dxdiag.exe shows me that there is a problem when running the 'Test Direct3D' test using the hardware accelerated DirectX 8 interface - it gives the error message:-
'Direct3D test results: Failure at step 5 (GetDeviceCaps): HRESULT = 0x8876086a (3D not available)'.
Incidentally, the frame rates in MS Flight Sim 2002 aren't much higher than they were with my old ATI Rage Magnum 32Mb card.
Any ideas/thoughts on this?  I'd be very grateful for some pointers.  Thanks.
    Howard

I would recommend a total reinstall of the system. Having had another videocard previously installed tends to mess up pretty much that is connected to videodrivers and 3d (direct x).
Even if you have run with a videocard in the same familily of cards (such as going from a GF2 to a GF3) you will most often benefit from a total reinstall and gain 3d performance.

  • Radeon 7500 AGP identification problem

I think I may have asked before, but I don't remember.  My system specs are listed below.  My problem is that my Radeon 7500 AGP card shows up as PCI under properties in the hardware listing.  Why is this?  Is it a problem?
    Thanks

You might have to enable APIC to get more irqs for your devices. But could cause trouble.
Also here is the newest Catylist drivers from Ati
They are newer than on the Power color site.

I momentarily lost track of this thread. :D
Yes, more than 16.  I'm pretty sure there are 22.  I don't have any sharing now except for the USB, they all share the same IRQ.  I don't have any device conflicts, so that's good.
    Thanks for the link.

  • RX 9800 Pro 128 mb AGP Display problem...

Got an odd problem with my recently purchased MSI  Rx 9800 Pro.  Once installed my computer boots properly, but i get small lines, odd looking graphics, or simply missing parts of characters, displayed on my screen.
I'v updated my bios on my MB, the rx9800 already has the lastest bios rev.  The problem happens during post as well has within windows.  But I did pull the latest drivers anyways from MSI, still displays funny.
I cleaned the leads on the AGP connection and made sure it was securely in place.
I thought it may be a power problem, I've got a 400 watt power supply with 3 cd/dvd roms and 2 Hard drives, so I disconnected the power to everything but my primary hard drive and the MSI vid card.
I also hooked up the DVI to VGA converter, incase there was a problem with the interface, but to no avail, it still does not function properly.
Just to make sure i wasnt being retarted I swtiched monitors as well, same problem.
I finally got frustrated and hooked my 3d prophet 32mb DDR Geforce card back up.
I've installed hundreds of video cards (ok, maybe not literally hundreds), but I can't fix this problem.  I'm thinking there has to be something wrong with the hardware?
Would the experts out here agree?  Any comments or addtional troubleshooting tips would be greatly appreciated.
    PC Specs:
    ASUS P4P800 Deluxe Motherboard
    P4 2.6 no HT
    512 mb DDR 3200 ram
    Windows XP SP 1
    2 Western Digital SATA 120 GB HD's

In that situation, I would try the card in another comparable PC to see if the problem is duplicated. If so, then I would think an RMA would be in order.
If I have a similar class of card available, that I know is in good working order, I will then try it in the PC with the problem to do a thourough session.
It's not always possible to do that as most of us don't own a store.
I have often put things on my credit card temporarily to troubleshoot and then return witin the alloted return window. It's not recommended unless you intend to return one and then keep the other.
    Just some ideas.

  • MSI GeForce NX6600GT VTD AGP display problem

    Hi!
I have MSI GeForce NX6600GT VTD AGP installed on ABIT NF-7S 2.0 (latest bios) with Athlon XP 2400+. Power supply 350W.
I had radeon 9200 running without problems, but if i install 6600gt, monitor goes on standby. It looks like monitor receives no signal from graphic card.
But computer boots normally - I can even log on to Windows! (log on sound from speakers when i enter password)
PS is rated 13A at 12V. Fan on 6600gt IS working.

    Hi!
Tried card in 2 different computers with same results. Seems that card was DOA

  • KT4 Ultra FISR AGP Speed Problem

    Hi all,
I've got a bit of a problem and was wondering if someone can help?
I have bought the KT4 Ultra FISR and am having a problem when trying to use it with my 8x AGP Nvidia ge Force 4 ti 4200 but the bois wont let me change the AGP speed to 8x, it insists that the highest it can go is 4x.  ;(
I have run the newest 3DMark03 and it's showing that my AGP is only 2.0 and not the 3.0 that is meant to be with the board?
I was wondering if this is the problem?
I have double checked with the Graphics Card Manufacturer and they have confirmed that my card is an 8x card and I know that it was running at 8x on my last board.
I have done all of the Auto updates on the MSI motherbaord update utility but there's still no joy.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!!
    - Ricky

    Hi there
Well I have the Inno36 Ti 4200 8x AGP card:
    http://www.ivmm.com/inno3d/geforce4/products_gf4_ti_agp8x_reviews.html
I know it's not the best card on the market but it should still be able to operate at it's advertised speed :P
A couple of the guys here at EA bought the card and theres are working fine on thier boards :(
I am not totally sure of the version number of my bios but does 1.3 ring a bell?
I wont be able to check the version till monday...
Like I said before.. I did notice that 3dmark03 noted that I was using agp 2.0, is that right?
    - Ricky
P.s. Thankyou for taking the time to help me out Its much appreciated.

  • Tower problem in Old Forge, NY 13420

All summer, multiple people mainly with iphones have been having problems retrieving voicemails and some txt messages, especially trying to send a txt with a picture in the Old Forge, NY area.
As soon as you leave the area and connect to another tower the stuff sends out or comes in.
Not sure how to notify Verizon about this but I think someone should look into it.

I was already using OS X. I actually had 10.4 installed, but downgraded to 10.2 Server since that is the only server edition OS X I have that is compatible with the G4. The machine worked beautifully with 10.4... why would it not be able to handle 10.2? Also, the machine has a gigabyte of ram which should be more than enough for 10.2...
The installation disc seems to be in fairly pristine condition. There are no scratches and I made sure to clean the dust off of it before inserting the disc into the machine. Also, doesn't the installer verify the contents of the installation packages before running the install? And even if not, wouldn't it at least report any issues it encountered during the installation process to notify me of a bad/incomplete install? The installer seemed to go through all of the packages without a single error message or warning, as if everything had gone flawlessly...
I mounted the drive in target disk mode on another mac and used disk warrior to attempt to repair it. I rebuilt the drive, repaired permissions and checked all files. The problem continues, however... I'm just about ready to give up at this point. This is extremely frustrating...

  • MSI NX7600GS AGP direct3d problem

    hallo,
recently i replaced my MSI GF4ti4200 (128MB) with the NX7600GS
i did a lot of testing already so i've tried to make an overview
    (i've tested OpenGL with Doom3 and Direct3D with 3Dmark2001,2003,2005)
in al my test situations, 2D works perfect
i have an older motherboard (VIA KT133)
    AGP4x mode with Fast Writes
    - OpenGL = crash when entering 3D mode
    - Direct3D = crash when entering 3D mode
    AGP4x mode without Fast Writes
    - OpenGL = crash when entering 3D mode
    - Direct3D = works, but heavy graphic corruption (clipping errors, texture errors)
    AGP2x mode with/without Fast Writes
    - OpenGL = works perfect
    - Direct3D = works, but very heavy graphic corruption (clipping errors, texture errors)
so i guess my motherboards AGP port isn't that good (although the GF4 always ran very stable at AGP4x with FW)
because it doesn't make lots of difference i do not care about AGP2x or 4x, but i get the feeling Direct3D seems to do better in AGP4x mode
i already tested the VIA drivers for my motherboard (old and new ones) and various nVidia drivers (there were a lot on the MSI install cd, but few of them work with a 7600)
the card is OK cause i got it to run perfect in Windows2000 in AGP4x mode, but then i installed WindowsXP...
(i already reinstalled Windows2000, but i did not get to run anymore cause for some reason)
Some cards change frequency's when entering 3Dmode, does this card do that too? and how can is disable this (some people say this causes problems on older motherboards)
    any suggestion is welcome

not all agp4x mobos can handle agp8x vga... i had experienced that.
i didn't know if that vga has extra power conector, if not maybe the mobo cant give enough power to the vga.
if there is an extra power connector then must be attached, and the psu is important, not only the wattage, but the amp on each rail. so post detailed specs of your psu. good look
yep catfishjvl folow ivangelion advice and paste PSU details which i has been asked before.
agreed, there is 3-4 simular cases with old VIA chipset board and simular problem. all is unresolved for now.
catfishjvl you can try to push AGP voltage to 1.6V may help. and retest. but dont go more than 1.6V

  • Msi nx6800gt agp atrifact problem pls HELP!!!

    hello all,
well guys need a help, a real bit starnge problem im facing, i got a MSI NX6800GT 256MB DDR3 AGP graphic card, the system boots up well no issues in the 2d mode but when i ran cod2 i faced kind of shall i say pixel sized squares appearing during gameplay the same was noticed playing f.e.a.r also, i chcked the card with riva tuner it showed the card as a proper 6800gt with 16pipelines etc i dont knw whts the problem i tried the same card in my frnds system also, he is running a gainward 6800gt golden sample we noticed the same kind of square artifacts which run all round the screen sometimes very few but i think as the game goes on its more, the card was run at stock speed of 350/1000 and the temp maintains at 62 degrees...
the system tested on had specs amd 3400+ 754 on a asus k8ne dlx mobo, with 1 gb twinmoss ram, an 500w power supply, the 3dmark2005 scroce is 4736pts, an we noticed these spots even during the benchmark....
the driver version used was 71.77 series then we used the 66 series an even msi's default series or drivers but to no avail pls do guide me on this guys it wud be really really helpful...
    regards,
    vicky

    hey richard,
i tired tht also, infact in the very begening the new forceware drivers were used then we tried the others, actually the artifacts are not like polygons or anthying they are square sized pixels tht appear on the screen, the monitor used was a viewsonic 17'' flat screen and the res was 1024 X 768.
we saw some serious square pixels in bf2, cod2 an even fear! 3dmark05 also displayed the same, do you think its a problem with the card or the cooling, the temp of the card remains between 56-62 deg.
we dont wanna underclock te card as i think it wud void the warranty!

  • 815EPT AGP Bus problem

Hi! I have a problem. My 815EPT (MS-6337) working at 2x AGP Bus with GeForce 4MX440 8x videocard.
Where can I set bus to 4x. I can't locate this setting in BIOS. Thanks!

Make sure you've got a clean un-installation of all the old VGA drivers and a clean installation of the new drivers for your VGA card.
Check with DXDiag for the AGP info.

  • AGP Sawtooth Problems

    Hi,
    i'm a mac newbie and purchased a G4 Sawtooth AGP 450Mhz 512m RAM 20gig HD.
the problem i have is that programs seem to stop and then reopen, the system just seems unstable.
When i try the updates for tiger i get a message saying unable to verify software. This mac came preloaded with tiger and loads of other programs i life, ms office etc etc so i'm guessing they are not registered. I also tried to add a PCI usb card but it didn't seem to like it. i'm reluctant to sling it as i want a challenge. my plans are to purchase a larger HD of about 80 gig, upgrade the RAM and change the graphics card as the fan is to noisey.
How do i get over the problem of verifying the OS do i have to purchase a new copy?
Can i used pc graphics card thats been flashed to work with a mac?
Can i copy the OS and just the programs i want to a new HD using disk copy and then bin the original HD.
is it worth trying to upgrade?
    Many thanks Giff

If you are running 10.4 Tiger, open Disk Utility, select your Hard Drive, check the SMART Drive status, then use the ( Verify ) function. If any problems, you will need a more drastic solution. If successful, run (Repair Permissions).
Are these updates that were pre-loaded, or did you freshly download them?
