G4 and BFD drums

I am currently running ProTools LE 7.0 (Digi002) and recently bought the BFD drum plug in. My G4 can not handle this plug in, keeps stopping my protools session from playing/recording. I have the BFD program on my system drive with the BFD data on my 2nd internal hard drive, which also shares the audio data for my sessions. Does anyone have any experience with this plug in on a setup similar to mine?
I do not believe uping my RAM to the 1.5 max from 1g would have much effect.
My main question is this...what is required to effectively run this plug in so that it is usable (no cpu spikes). OR do I need to get a G5, and if so, what specs.
Thanks for the input.

Hey Ivan-
Not sure if this will help, but make sure that the "Bounce" function in BFD is turned on before freezing the track. This should allow everything to resolve and play out all the way. The Bounce thing is the giant letter "B" at the bottom of the plug-in.
Not sure why you are getting the crash, though, before the Freeze. How much RAM do you have in your machine? BFD works best with at least 2GB.

    Two problems here!
    1. I have one instance of BFD drums running and it is operating in 16 bit mode ( I chose this whilst working with the idea that I would switch to 24bit for final mix) to save RAM etc. if I leave logic idle for 20 minutes and then come back and play the track Logic will quit as soon as iut reaches the first region with BFD Midi notes. ANY IDEAS?
to counter this I have simply Frozen the track works well except!
    2. with Freeze activated it seems to be cutting off notes way before the midi notes say to - for example a cymbal crash is cut off just a quarter the way through. ANY IDEAS?
    any help would be appreciated.

    Aha! I have sorted it.
For those with similar problems, the solution is this:
Macintosh HD > Library > Audio > MIDI Drivers

  • Logic 7.1 and BFD and importing midi

Hello! Im quite new to Logic, just left Protools and Cubase. Is there anyone out there who knows how to:
    1. Like in protools import a midi file and get the tempo info from the midifile, start position and evryting else that might be of interest.
    2. I use BFD a lot, great program, very easy to use in protools. But in logic it seems quite hard to record each drum and each channel. I mean I want to import a midifile for bfd or make a new one, second I want to send each and every channel that BFD All got to separate channels so I can record it for futher work later on. How?? I cant get it. Its very easy in Protools

BFD is a whole lot easier to use in Logic than Pro Tools and works more efficiantely. You basically need to rack up aux tracks in the environment window for the individual tracks in BFD. My advice is to read the supplied manual that clearly describes in detail exactly how to set up BFD in Logic. FXpansion explain the process in the manual a whole lot better than I can here but if you still have problems I can take you through the process.
You do need to set upsome templates for BFD.

  • What is the easiest way to mix and match drum samples from Logic software instruments

I have been using Logic software instruments (EXS 24 drums kits) for a while. I know how to edit indiviual zones in a drum kit but I would like to know how to copy and paste multiple zones all at once from one kit to another so that I can create a hybrid ESX24 drum kit with my favorite snares, kicks, toms etc. Is there a good tutorial video showing how to do this?

so that I can create a hybrid ESX24 drum kit with my favorite snares, kicks, toms etc.
To my opinion the Environment "Mapped Instrument" object is designed exactly for what you want. You can load even different Software (drum) Instrument kits into say EXS, Addictive Drums, UB etc. Patch multiple cables to each Software Drum Instrument instance, open the Mapped Instrument and assign the pads "cable" outputs in the Cable column - this is one of the most elegant ways in Logic...

  • I'm opening a garageband file on a different computer than the one it was made on, and my drum loops are playing as low pitched beeps instead of the jazzy brushes I want. I believe my version is more up-to-date than what I used first. How can I fix this?

I believe I said it all in the question...

Could it be that you had more instruments on the old computer? Or haven't correctly installed the instruments on the new one?
Obviously, GB hasn't assigned a drum instrument to the track that the drum notes are on (my guess: since it doesn't have the desired drum set.) Press cmd-I to make the track info pane visible and pick one of the drum sets for that track.

  • Help with Logic Pro X and Addictive Drums

    Hello guys!
Please be patient (and understanding) with my questions
I'm trying to do just a basic task, and once I know how to do it, I will expand upon it.
At this point, all I want to do is use Logic Pro X to record a Drum Track, a Bass Guitar Track, a Electric Guitar Track, and a Vocal Track.
    1) Would you start a New Project from Songwriter or Multi-Track (and why)?
    2) From what screen and how do you open Addictive Drums?
    3) Once Addictive Drums is open, I will pick one of the Preset Patterns and drag it to the Favorites Window on Addictive Drums.
But once I do that, and here's the most important question (so far ), how specifically do I get/put that Drum Pattern into Logic Pro X?
    Thanks in advance!

  • Logic and BFD (all out) problem...I know, I know, but this one's a bit diff

OK, I'm new to Logic. But I pretty much get it. I totally understand how the Logic Environment should be interfacing with BFD (all out), using audio objects (Aux) for the coresponding outs from BFD. Here's the thing...
When I try to select the input options for the Aux object from BFD all I get is "BFD (all out) 3-4" and no other options from BFD. Am I missing anything or is my BFD just being a jerk? Also, after updating and re-installing BFD and Logic the AU manager still won't pass BFD. Any thoughts? Thanks.
    Dual 2.0 G5   Mac OS X (10.4.5)   1GB Ram

I thought this is what it's supposed to do. Send
channels 1-2 to the track, and the rest to the aux
objects (which would start w/ 3-4).
Yes, I understand this, however all subsequent tracks (not just the next sequential tracks) pull up as 3-4. No further outputs are given once 3-4 has been selected once. They all come up with 3-4 if stereo or 3 or 4 if mono. Nothing else. That's why I now suspect it's an issue for FXpansion to solve.
This isn't do or die for me. It's definitely more convenient that soloing each output in BFD one at a time and recording it to an audio track, but I can do that in the meantime. Thanks all for your input!

  • G4 Logic pro 8 and BFD

    Hi
As some forum member may recall I have a G4 MDD iam running logic pro on however I tried installing BFD 2 and the cpu goes into the redzone but disk IO is nothing!!
Do I need to get a dual G4 cpu or get a G5
    Current setup
    1.25 cpu single
    1GB of ram
    osx 10.4.11
The weird thing is I tried optermising the G4 such as turning the screen saver off and this helped however after restarting the G4 the Cpu usage still went back in to the red zone but I manage to get the cpu usage down to 75% before rebooting.
The optermisation settings are still enabled is there someting I am missing??

BFD2 requirements shows G5 as the minimum...
2GB of RAM is the minimum too
anyway, just for try, go to bfd Engine settings
set to use 16 bit mode... aloso try to change the ammount of Layers... as 32 or less.
    when install use "Small" option
... but it is very hard for your G4 to use BFD2... a friend of mine use a G4MDD but not BFD2.

  • Realistic drum sound? Advice given and needed

I am trying to figure out how to get a decent, realistic (ish!) drum sound on the iPad, to use when recording garageband tracks. Let's face it, the smart drums just don't cut it. I have gone through seemingly tons of set-ups and configurations with different apps and so forth, and have sort of settled on a sound which is ok (for now) and is by far the best sound I've achieved so far. Bear in mind that, as a garageband user, I am not investing tons of money into tech - a few pounds per app is all I've spent really. First, I'll describe what I've done in the past, and what I currently do.
I started with the smart drums, of course. Tiresome very quickly, and they were naturally holding back the quality of my recordings by making them sound, basically, rubbish. I find that with drums, they either need to sound decently realistic, or completely electronic (like a drum machine). Anything in-between is nonsense and sounds bad.
I next downloaded the DM1 app and made drum tracks using some of the preset acoustic drum kits. Much much better sound, ability to change individual drum sounds and panning. Still not great though, and very laborious as the track had to be (before ios7 and inter-audio apps were usable with garageband) rendered, emailed to myself, downloaded, converted using file conversion software, loaded into another DAW to allow it to be copied, then pasted into garageband. There was also some latency apparent when exporting the file. Bah!
Eventually I found Easybeats 2. More intuitive, some ok-sounding samples available to use for the different drums. Only 16 bars of drums can be programmed at a time, but that doesn't matter so much as you can easily export the 16 bars into your pasteboard straight from the app, then copy it into garageband (no latency either!). Then just wipe the 16 bars and do the next section. Panning, individual drum control, VELOCITY CONTROL for each hit (finally!).
Still something was missing though. I had yet to find a kick and snare sound which was close to acceptable. DM1 came closest for those two so far, but much worse for cymbals, hi-hats, toms, and had no velocity for each hit (well I think you could select normal or louder for each hit, but nothing more than that - not good enough). Also the snares were a bit weak-sounding. For some time, my solution was to record a drum track on kick and snare only using DM1, load this into garageband, then record a duplicate track in Easybeats 2, again with kick and snare but this time with everything else as well, then load that on another track, and attempt to sync the tracks as closely as possible (sometimes a laborious job considering the latency from DM1), then mix this down to one track. This gave a powerful sound and I was pleased with it for a while, though looking back now, it was awful. Just awful.
When I became dissatisfied with this sound, I came to a crossroads. Was I going to stop this quest for realistic ipad drums, and just buy EZdrummer for my laptop? I would need to upgrade my windows as well. And buy a DAW. An investment of hundreds of pounds! No, I would continue my noble quest! But for this, I would need to enlist the help of my laptop.
What I really needed was a decent kick and snare sound to use in Easybeats 2 (i tried Easybeats 3 but went back to 2. 2 is just better in my opinion). For me, that's 80% of a good drum sound. Average-quality cymbals and hi hats can hide to some extent if the snare and kick are convincing enough. Of course, I'm talking about rough-quality demo tracks - in professional recordings all elements are of course important. I would have to find samples, and save these as a drum kit to be used with Easybeats. But this can't be done using only an ipad. I googled 'acoustic drum samples' on my laptop and on the first page is 'Tom Hicks Samples'. Zip files with tons of samples for every drum you could need, and all free. I don't think you can find better for free online. Still I was not 100% happy with any one sound. I therefore loaded a few sounds into Audacity (free mixing software) and overlayed them, and played with the bass and gain, until I was happy. I then exported these as wavs, created a custom wav kit by sending a compressed file with all of my desired sounds from my laptop directly into Easybeats 2 (you need to plug the ipad into your laptop to enable this), and finally... Finally! My drum kit is completely (for now). The combination of decent sounds and the ability to control the velocity of each hit in Easybeats 2 is, thus far, simply the best method I've discovered for drums on the ipad.
Not being very technically-minded (I prefer just playing and writing music, but know little about tech or computers) the above methods were things I discovered and experimented with gradually, and something as seemingly simple as, say, creating a custom snare sound by overlaying multiple samples into Audacity, then using that sound for every snare hit, is not something which even occurred to me for a long time. There was certainly nothing online that I found to explain or guide me through any of the steps. Most advice amounted simply to 'use DM1', or to not use the ipad at all. Hopefully my advice may prove useful to anyone undertaking a similar quest.
I posted this not just to explain my method, but to ask whether anyone has any input or further advice on creating a good drum sound on the ipad. I am always looking for new ideas, and I am not convinced that I have reached the pinnacle of what the ipad can achieve yet.

I'm definitely going to agree with BeeJay to a point... Logic's drums are not stellar (they're okay, but that's as far as I go), and forget Ultrabeat if you want a little bit a "realism". However, if all you have to work with right now are Logic's kits (and perhaps the Rhythm Section JamPack), go into the EXS and separate the important groups (kick, snare, toms and hi-hats) into their own aux channels and save the the instrument as a multichannel instrument. Work with the separate aux channels by adding in a bit of EQ and/or compression (or do the New York style mix). As well, send the unprocessed signals to a bus containing a drum room reverb and mix them together.
Another thing you may want to consider is the fact in order to sound like a human, don't play it like a robot. Quantize certain parts, but not every part (and it doesn't have to be at 100% - use lower strengths to bring out a bit of humanness). If you don't have one, get a pad input, such as M-Audio's Trigger Finger. Note the a lot of the kits in the EXS and JamPacks have a few articulations for drums that you need to make use of, such as flams, drags and rimshots to do various beats. Listen to various rhythms and fills and watch how drummers do it (plenty of videos on http://www.drummerworld.com). And, when you make a beat, play the beat.
Back to samples: if you find that Logic's kits still aren't cutting it for you, definitely go for something like BFD, DKFH or whatever. I fell in love with BFD and highly recommend it. As to whether it sounds like a drummer for you will depend on how you play it. For me, it definitely sounds like a drummer. :-D

  • Triggering dfh or bfd from real drum recordings in logic

Is there a plugin which will convert audio drum takes to midi data ( with accurate velocity conversion) for use with samplers and dfh and bfd. Also will dfh run happily in logic 6.4.3 and logic 7.1.1 on a g4 dual 1 Ghz 1.5 Gb ram os 10.3.9.
    Thanks for any help

Logic's "Audio to Score" does this quite well.
You'll need to adjust velocity settings to have it ignore mic bleed, and get the attack setting as low as possible to insure that the triggering is super tight.
You'll also need to move all the interpreted hits to the same MIDI note value (1 step process via the transformer).
Put that MIDI track on your BFD or DKH track, with the MIDI note assigned to where the snare/kick is...
I do this regularly with live drum tracks, and it works very well, although I usually use samples I have in my EXS library.

  • Roland V-Drums and TD-3: Can't get GarageBand 10 to recognize

    Hi folks,
I cannot seem to get my Roland V-Drums to trigger anything in GarageBand (Mac). I'm am an expert with Macs and have played the (non-electric) Drums for a very long time… but I know **nothing** about MIDI. I have used GarageBand for several years, but only to edit podcasts. I've used the V-Drums since they were new as a practice kit, only hooked up to headphones or with music piped in through the line in. They've worked flawlessly.
    Here's my setup:
    * Roland V-Drums with a TD-3 Percussion Sound Module
    * MacBook Air 13" Mid 2013 (1.7GHz i7, 8GB RAM)
    * OS X Yosemite 10.10.1, GarageBand 10.0.3 -- completely updated. GB downloaded all its additional sounds.
    * mIO 1x1, 16 channel MIDI > USB interface. [https://www.iconnectivity.com/products/midi/mio]
Here's what I've done so far:
1 Connected the mIO between the TD-3 and the Mac's USB port.
2 Disconnected all other audio cables from the TD-3 (no headphones or external amp/speaker connected)
3 Plugged my headphones into the Mac's headphone port.
    4 Powered up the TD-3
    5 Powered up the Mac
    6 Launched GarageBand
    7 Created a blank project.
8 Selected a Software Instrument and selected a drum kit.
    9 Struck a drum pad… nothing happened.
10 Check GB's prefs. Says "use system defaults"
    11 Opened AudioMIDISetup.app > MIDI Studio
    12 mio is listed there.
13 clicked "test setup" but I have no idea what this does.
14 Read the help docs for both GarageBand and MIDI Studio.
15 Googled (and DuckDuckGo'd) the internet for two hours.
16 Watched some YouTube videos, where people didn't have to do anything special to get other drum kits to work in GarageBand
17 Read some post that suggested I could download a little app that'd help GB "hear" the TD-3 on channel 10. Said freeware is no longer available.
18 Downloaded the user manual for the TD-3, read the MIDI section. Channel 10 is indeed what it uses for in and out. The internet seems to suggest this is the common channel for drum machines.
19 Didn't find anything that helped in these forums (and others)
And now I cry Uncle and throw my fate to the Apple community… help!
Goal: I have a friend's GarageBand file, and I want to record the drum track using MIDI and my V-Drum set.
    Thank you

Just to be sure, have you connected the MIDI inputs/outputs correctly? It's rather confusing, if memory serves (been a little while since I did any MIDI).
You want the MIDI out on your v-drums connected to the MIDI in on the mIO interface, and the MIDI in on the v-drums connected to the MIDI out on the mIO. That is, you want the drums’ output to connect to the interface’s input, and the drums’ input connected to the interface’s output (in case you want to control the drums via GarageBand in some fashion).
    That should “just work”.
