G4 bios update (larger drive recognition)

I need to know if there is a way to update the bios on a G4 to recognize a larger internal drive (500gb). The system shows 137gb now, max. Just replaced the OS drive, which was a dual boot (9.2 & X). Need version 9 for the version of ProTools I use.

Hi, PoundSign -
Welcome to Apple's Discussions.
I need to know if there is a way to update the bios on a G4 to recognize a larger internal drive (500gb).
No.
For what it is worth, Macs don't use a BIOS as such.
More to the point, the restriction is hardware-based, being a function of the built-in controller for the built-in ATA bus.
The built-in controllers on QuickSilver '02 and later models do have large drive support; none of the earlier models do. There is no way to change this.
However, there are solutions -
1) Add a PCI controller card, one which is 48-bit LBA compliant. This includes many ATA/100 cards, and just about all ATA/133 cards. Then connect the 500GB drive to that card.
2) Use a software approach, such as this one from Intech -
http://www.speedtools.com/ATA6.html
- be sure to read the cautions and limitations.
Re large drives and OS 9, there is a booting restriction for OS 9 - it can not be booted when the volume (volume = an unpartitioned drive, or a partition of a partitioned drive) it is on is larger than 200GB. Since this is a volume-size restriction (and not a drive-size one), partitioning a large drive such that the volume used for OS 9 booting does not exceed 200GB is a solution. A good target size for that partition is no more than 190GB, to allow for formatting irregularities.

  • After BIOS update DVD driver do not read DVDs anymore - Sat A80

    Hi,
I have a Satellite A80-131 and after bios update (last version 2.5) by windows procedure update, my DVD drive do not read DVD medias anymore. It is possible to read CD medias, but not DVD one.
Can I reinstall the old bios? Can I reinstall the firmware?
    Thanks
    Ronai Lisboa

    Hi Ronai
Like Jimi has said in the posting above. It's very unusual that after BIOS updating the DVD drive hasn't read the DVDs.
Furthermore it's not advisable to use any 3rd party applications to DOWNGRADE the BIOS. Usually only the ASP can downgrade the BIOS. Such procedures are very serious and the wrong procedure can damage the motherboard.
However, it's nice that you have solved the problem and that the drive works properly.
    Thanks for the feedback.

  • Hard drive failure after running bios update.

While attempting to update the bios on my A215 S5824 laptop, there was a small POP sound and everything went dead.  Everything seems to be working except the hard drive and screen. I was having intermittent blank screen issues, thus the bios update attempt. Any thoughts would be helpful.
P.S. Running windows vista home premium.

I would search these forums and the web for Toshiba BIOS Crisis Recovery,it may be possible to boot the BIOS in repair mode (using certain key combinations) to access a BIOS image that's on a bootable media or thumb drive.
You can also trying to contact Toshiba to see if they will cover this repair
You can also contact aqstech.com to do the BIOS repair for about 100 bucks.

  • BIOS update, then will not boot from any drive

This old laptop, 3000 C200 8922 was acting very clunky when on wireless.
Downloaded Bios Version 63ET62WW and flashed it into the bios.
Now, even though I can get to the bios screen, and it shows the hard drive, DVD/CD drive, it will NOT boot from either.
It will also "see" a usb installed, but will not boot from it.
I have removed all power and cleared the CMOS several times and I still have nothing. Tried two different hdd's which have been in the machine and same results.
HELP!! I should have never messed with it......

    hi k4pew,
One rule after a BIOS update is to Load optimize deafults after updating.
Try that go inside BIOS Hit F9 to load defaults then F10 to Save and Exit.
    If not
Try turning on the computer and start hitting F1 to load the Recovery Menu and see if that will push then Try Reseting the PC.
If still the same Im afraid that the BIOS needs to be reflashed.
Im not aware of any flash tool or a your Previous BIOS Version Firmware available for download.
You can try calling Lenovo Technical Support for any options available for repair.
Im sorry to hear what happened

  • Windows Update not working on rebuilt RAID1 on Larger Drives -

Recovered an image from 320 gig drives to 500 gig drives.  Everything worked fine except both Lenovo and Windows Updates did not work.  Subsequently noticed that this was also true on the 320s and it happened a day or two before I imaged it (them).  Downloaded and installed the latest Lenovo System Update application and that cured both problems on the 320s but only cured the Lenovo updates problem on the 500s.  I've tried a few things written on the web and also tried to let the Windows online validation tool run but I've tried it twice but it doesn't end.  The last time it ran for over 1.5 hours without any resolution.  It just keeps spinning.
This is actually another opportunity generated from what I was doing in the post "How to Migrate a Raid1 to larger drives without having to rebuild on a W700?" but this seems like a different, though related, subject so I started a new post.  If someone thinks it best to combine them please do.

  • Updating BIOS without floppy drive?

Hi I wish to update my BIOS so I can use my new dual core cpu but it seems incredibly complicated.
Like the title says, I don't have a floppy drive. However I've heard some say this doesn't matter and I can install the new BIOS from the hard drive.
My motherboard: MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum
    The Bios (top one): http://global.msi.com.tw/index.php?func=downloaddetail&type=bios&maincat_no=1&prod_no=587
Does anyone know what I can do?

I gave up and tried inserting my old athlon 64 3500 in and it now works, although sometimes the screen gives no signal so I reset.
However now my ethernet controller is not working so I can't access the net through my router. I've installed the NVIDIA nForce3 System Drivers from http://global.msi.com.tw/index.php?func=downloaddetail&type=driver&maincat_no=1&prod_no=587
as well as getting the Realtek Gigabit Ethernet Drivers off there and installing a 'LAN utility' off it. Couldn't execute anything else with it.
But no luck. My pc recognises the LAN as connected but I can't access my router nor the net. In System it shows my ethernet driver as a question mark.
At the moment I just want to get back online.
p.s.: I was flashing so I get my dual core to work. My bios at the time (never been updated) only saw it as single core.
EDIT: In system I've tried updating the ethernet driver that way but no luck.

Try with just one memory stick, also provide details about memory sticks used.
You can try to setup memory voltage in BIOS to 2.7V && re-test.
Also try with another PSU as suggested.

  • Protege P4000 - BIOS update without floppy drive

    Hi,
I have a Protege P4000 which, I beleive, was orignally purchased without a floppy drive. Now that I'm upgrading the OS to Win XP I need to install more memory, and as many other forum members point out this won't work without a BIOS update.
However the BIOS update available from the website is for the Tranditional install only, and requires a Floppy drive (which I don't have). Is it possible to get a version that runs under Windows, or find another way to run the traditional install? The website seems to suggest that Windows installation is preferred, but the software isn't provided.
    Thanks.

    Ok
I guess that's the reason for the problems. It is not so easy to know anyway because there are several ways to upgrade the BIOS on some of the models.
The method you are using apply only to Toshiba BIOS and when there is a diskette available with the extracted BIOS package on.
In this case we're using a bootable CD so that won't work here.
Instead, start the machine with the power button, and when you see the Toshiba-logo, press F12.
That will bring you to the BOOT Device selection menue. It consists of a small icon-menue below the TOSHIBA-logo.
The internal HDD is highlighted and you can move the marker by pressing the arrow keys.
Move the marker to the icon that looks like a CD.
    Press ENTER.
Now it will boot from the CD and hopefully update the BIOS.

  • [Thinkpad S430] BIOS Update & USB 3.0, Chipset driver, Intel RapidStorage

    Hi guya,
at the moment I am trying to get all drivers together for the new windows 8.
So far so good. I got almost all, but the newest BIOS Update contains an README which is mentioning to install a specific USB 3.0 driver prior flashing the new BIOS.
But where can I get the driver?
Also for windows 7 there has been a chipset-driver, will there also one in windows 8?
In the download section you can download a driver for the use of the caching-ssd called Intel RapidStorage, but as far as I know, does Lenovo use Expresscache under windows 7..
     mentioned abstract from BIOS-Update:
    - Lenovo recommends to install the USB 3.0 driver for Windows (Version
1.4.0.225 or higher) prior to updating the BIOS. Because the BIOS requires
the modification in the USB 3.0 driver to fix USB 3.0 related issues.

    Hello,
I am not familiar witheither  the ThinkPad S430 or the Iomega external USB 3.0 hard disk drive, but I wonder if the latter might not be receiving enough power over the USB cable.  Does the Iomega drive have an option to take power from an external AC adapter or second USB port?  If so, try providiing additional power and see if that allows the drive to be recognized when attached to the ThinkPad S430.

  • H61M-P23 (B3) BIOS update is not yet completed, please insert the USB pen drive.

    Hey,
I attempted to update my BIOS, but the power went out in the middle of it. I cleared CMOS, and when I tried to use the EIVB.bin file to boot up a bios, It only says A2 in the corner. Without a flash drive in it says BIOS update is not yet completed, please insert the USB pen drive and reset the system. Any ideas on what to do?

Move USB key to another USB port and retest, use backside one.
If no change have a try with another different USB key,
and copy the EIVB.bin file to the newest USB key and retry.

  • Dead dv6-7214 with MSATA C DRIVE after hp support assistant loaded new bios update. 5-18-13

I postponed a bios update because that makes me nervous. Apparently for good reason.
Today I let the nag proceed with bios update on my dv6-7214 running win8.
It said it was doing a system restore point, but that seems to have been useless.
The notebook had a black screen after an hour of "rebooting", so I powered down.
    Power on still black screen.
No response to any keys prerssed after power on, such as esc key.
I read several posts regarding needing to roll back bios updates, which doesn't say much for HP
that this is a recurring problem.
I am NOT getting a blue screen, not getting anything at all.
Is there a way to roll back a bios short of shipping it back to HP?
I did not write down the bios version, just trusted it was needed. Wont be letting hp support assistant to run anything else.
I guess i will uninstall HP support assistant, if i ever get my computer back to the point it can turn on.
Cant think of any software bug as bad as the one loaded by hp into my bios.
Anyone? How do a reset the bios with a totally unresponsive notebook?
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

Thanks chryig, but no that did not work.
Hp support emailed the same solution.
The dv6-7214 has an msata slot, which can be configured as C drive, which I did with an msata ssd.
The drive which came with the laptop was in the sata slot, as usual, but was not C drive.
I found someone posting identical problem, black screen, (not blue screen) no error messages, just bricked.
They also has an SSD C drive.
I tried temporarily moving the msata to the sata slot (with an adapter). This allowed the bios to complete
    its update.
So it isnt the Bios that is broken, but the Software to perform bios update is broken.
Update (bios) fails if the C drive is anywhere but the sata slot (or perhaps the c drive must be drive 0).
Hopefully HP will fix this problem. Many HP laptops are sold "upgraded" with additional disk via
value added reseller. Since there are only 2 sata slots and 1 msata slot the C drive can be in, it
should be possible for the update bios software to handle this small number of possibilities.

  • Wireless LAN driver can't load after BIOS update NB550D

    Hi
I have a new NB550D and have jst installed the recommended BIOS update. Now the Wireless LAN driver can't load (error code 31).
I tried installing the lestest driver off the Toshiba website but it still can't be loaded by Windows...
Everything was fine before this! Any ideas?

    > In the Device Manager the Atheros Wireless is shown
This means that the Wlan driver was installed properly and the issue could be related to configuration between Wlan card and Wlan router.
You should check if the notebook can connect to Wlan router without the usage of any encryption settings.
Disable the WEP/WPA encryption and test the connectivity. Of course this should be done only for test attempts.
Are you sure that the Wlan is enabled? Enable this using FN + F8

PS:  Prior to updating the bios i can still work with the DVD drive but after I applied the update and the system rebooted, my DVD drive is gone.

I have successed to find again my CD/DVD drive both in BIOS and Windows 7 by doing the following:
(1). Press F2 at "Lenovo" start up display to enter BIOS
(2). Go to "Main" (the place showing also Harddisk Drive) and enter F9 for Set Default.

  • Satellite L350-277 - Update of new BIOS and Wifi driver

TEMPRO has given me 2 new drivers but neither has instructions.
BIOS installation used to be an operation involving copying the driver to a disc and then changing the boot-up order to start with that disc.
However I think the new BIOS drivers are installed with Windows running - as a normal program. Anyone know for sure ?
I assume the wifi driver is a normal install, with wifi switched on or off ?

    Hi
    Just one question;
Is a WLan driver update and BIOS update necessary?
I mean; do you have any problems with your notebook where such update would be required?
You should not update this if everything is OK. in most case the Tempro notifies you about drivers and tools which are uploaded to the driver page but this is not a recommendation for an update you know what I mean???
I follow always this tip; never change a running system.
