G4 combo drive into a g3

will a combo drive dvd/cdrw drive from an ibook g4 matsushita cw-8124-c work in my clamshell. i am looking to burn cds not watch dvds, i would be putting it into a clamshell 366mhz and a 300mhz (i can get a deal on 2). will the connections match up. please i need answers asap. thank you

Your drive will work in the clamshell, the problem is that the bezel can't be attached ...or it has to be modded to work. The sites I had bookmarked of such projects are no longer working. Macmod.com might have something, or this site might have some interesting links that may help...

  • Can I make combo drive into an external device?

Okay, so I have a 14" iBook G4 1Ghz with a bad combo drive. I purchased a replacement from Amazon but then I looked up the directions for installing it and I am not sure I want to go through all of that. So, I have the following questions:
Is it possible to make a CW-8123-C combo drive into an external device? If so where can I get the case that would be compatible with that?

I'd do a google search for "slimline optical drive enclosure." I actually just did one and a fair number came up for USB, but I didn't see any for firewire. They're out there, but you'll probably have to hunt for them.
If worse comes to worse and you need to do something like reload the OS, and you have access to another Firewire Mac (remember, firewire 400 ports aren't available on all Macs any longer) you could always do the following:
    1. On the borrowed Mac, put the optical media into the optical drive, and let the OS load it.
    2. Connect a firewire cable between your Mac and the borrowed mac.
    3. Reboot the borrowed Mac in target mode.
    4. Reboot your own Mac, holding down the "alt/option" key. The screen will turn blue and in about a minute or so, the drives on your system as well as the hard drive and optical disk on the borrowed system will show up as bootable devices.
    5. Select the optical drive by clicking on it then clicking on the icon that looks like a right arrow.
The system will boot off the optical drive on the borrowed system, but you'll be able to do stuff like use disk utility to repair your volume, change passwords, etc. Just make sure you're doing this to YOUR disk and not the disk on the borrowed system.
When you put a Mac into target mode, it really just turns the computer into one big firewire interface to the computers drives whether they be optical or hard disk.
It's obviously not the most convenient way to do stuff but in an emergency it can do the trick.
    Hope this helps.

  • Old iBook Combo drive into BlackBook 2.0

I've got a dead 12" iBook 1.2GHz (with a combo drive) and a BlackBook Core Duo 2.0GHz (with a drive that doesn't want to accept disks...)
I'm sure the BlackBook drive is bad (ie.- dirty/non repairable) and am wondering if it would be easier to just swap out the two.
Does anyone know if this is possible?
Will the iBook drive work in my BlackBook?
    Thanks in advance,
    Double_A

No, the iBook drive is 12.7mm high and the MacBook takes a 9.5mm high drive. Check out the specs at OWC. http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/optical-drives/superdrives/

  • Using eMac Combo drive in a PC

    G'day All,
I have an old, old PC which I would like to install my Combo drive into. It is the Philips CDD5301. WinMe recognises the model number etc, but it does not have any CD-RW or DVD capabilities, just a bulk standard CD-Rom. I have dowloaded a copy of FlashTool P3.7.2.1 which should get it going, but I am hesitant about doing so and ending up bricking the drive. Has anyone ever used their old Mac hardware in a PC after they upgraded their Mac??

You can read the contents of CD-ROM or DVD-ROM ?
If that is OK the player is working on the PC.
Win95/98/ME/2000 have no burning and DVD player capabilities by itself.
You must use a program such as Nero Burning ROM or alike, to burn CDs and another program like VLC
    http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-windows.html
to be able to see a DVD.

  • How can I remove a CD in Combo Drive of Mac Mini?

This is a Mac Mini operating on OS 10.58.  I have a CD in the combo drive, and it apparently has something recorded on it.  I think this CD had started to be burned and I stopped it.  The computer indicates that this CD is not blank.  The result is that it will not eject, even after several attempts using the small eject arrow at the top of the desktop, the use of apple-E, and after repeated efforts with a complete shutdown -- still the disk is stuck in the drive.  I suspect that it's in a loop situation, where it tries to run the CD with not effect, but it also cannot eject it.
I notice a small black square, appearing to be black plastic, at the far right end of the CD/DVD player slot at the top of the Mac Mini.  In the old days there was such a hole into which one could stick a straight wire, like a heavy duty straightened paper clip, and it would physically eject a stuck disk.  Is there such a thing on this Mac Mini?
    Any good suggestions, please!?  Thanks!!
              George

Five ways to eject a stuck CD or DVD from the optical drive
Ejecting the stuck disc can usually be done in one of the following ways:
    1. Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the left mouse button until the disc ejects.
    2. Press the Eject button on your keyboard.
    3. Click on the Eject button in the menubar.
    4. Press COMMAND-E.
    5. If none of the above work try this: Open the Terminal application in your Utilities folder. At the prompt enter or paste the following:
         /usr/bin/drutil eject
If this fails then try this:
Boot the computer into Single-user Mode. At the prompt enter the same command as used above. To restart the computer enter "reboot" at the prompt without quotes.

  • I need to refresh my iMac's OS but I can't use the combo drive

I need to upgrade the OS on an old iMac G4 I bought and the internal combo drive is dead. Is there a way to do this using either a Flash drive or a HD drive? I have SuperDuper so I thought I would copy my system from an existing iMac G4 to this computer, but SuperDuper isn't being so Super right now and is coking on some files.
Any other ideas? (I don't have an external DVD drive but do own a MacBook and have a wireless network if that helps.) THANKS.

Does the "new" iMac have Firewire (I think all G4 iMac had FW ports)? If so, you can connect it via a Firewire cable to another Mac and boot the iMac G4 into "Target" mode which will make it appear as an external hard drive on which ever computer it is tethered to.
You can then run the install DVD on the computer and install the system to the "Target" which is the old iMac.

  • New mac mini won't accept dvd's/cd's in the combo drive

    Hello friends:
i have a new mac mini that I bought about 2 months ago (Intel, 2.0 ghz). Everything was working fine until I went to put in a DVD today. The combo drive won't accept a disc. It's not that it won't read the disc, it physically won't suck it into the drive. Instead it just sits there. If I try and push it in, nothing happens... it just bounces back out at me as if pushed by a spring. And, no, there isn't already a disc in the drive.
Can anyone suggest how to get my combo drive to work again?

    Hi jrm27,
I have an older Mac Mini 1.66 GHz, but I haven't seen this problem.
I take it that the disc does go in a little way. I would think that that rules out that the drive thinks there's a CD already in the drive. I know that when I have a CD or DVD in the drive, the little doors (they're really there) are closed and won't let me insert a 2nd CD.
I presume that you have restarted your system since this started to occur?
When the system is rebooting, hold down the mouse button. This is supposed to force eject a CD. It might also trick your system into thinking there's no CD there, or resetting something.
Try different types of CDs or DVDs, just to make sure that there's not something screwy with the media that you are using. Try an old-fashioned music CD or something.
Are there any sounds the drive makes?

  • CD stuck in combo drive – not mounted / not recognized, so cannot eject

A CD which had been recognized and could be played in iTunes was in the combo drive when I rebooted. After reboot the CD was not recognized/mounted, and was not visible in Finder, iTunes, or DiskUtility (therefore, it cannot be ejected).
I rebooted with the mouse button held down but nothing happened. Then I did drutil eject, trying it a few times in succession, but nothing happened.
At no time after the original reboot has there been the slightest clicking or whirring noise from the combo drive. Evidently the system 'thinks' the combo drive has no disk inside it.
I haven't tried to go into single-user mode to try to eject it from there. (Incidentally, I have conflicting methods on how to enter single-user mode – is it cmd-s or cmd-opt-o-f ?) Before I try that, my question is that given that I know a good CD is inside the combo drive, is there any command (in Terminal) that would make the system force it to mount?
    Thanks for any info.

    HI,

    Try the suggestion here: http://forums.macosxhints.com/archive/index.php/t-4446.html
To eject the CD. Try launching iTunes, then Quit iTunes then press the Eject key on your keyboard.

  • EMac Combo drive for a DVD burner ( superdrive)

Hi . I have purchased a used eMac 1 ghz . it has a stock combo drive . i burn a lot of DVDs .I have a external plextor DVD burner ( super drive ) and i was woundering if it would fit in the eMac ? do i need to remove the little bezel at the end of the tray ? I have always owned a older Slower G3 type mac , this will be my fastest mac i would ever have . So i want to be happy with it .
    Thank you kindly

I guess burning to external is not so bad . i have been haveing problems when OSX tryed to verifi the burn and it fails so i though putting it into the computer would resolve that . I will keep the burner in the external case if it means i have to take the top off the optical drive itself .

  • Strange behavior with combo drive...

I've had my powerbook for a few years without any problems other than some slight noise from the secondary fan which I replaced a few weeks ago without any difficulty. The other day I noticed my powerbook froze up on me. I had no choice but to depress the power button to restart it. Force quitting would not work on the open apps or to relaunch the finder. After restarting I had the same problem. This happened twice. I tried resetting the pram and also followed the instructions on this post: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=14449
For most situations, a restart is sufficient. If the computer has stopped responding, try these steps, in order, until the computer responds:
    1. Force Quit (Option-Command-Escape)
    2. Restart (Control-Command-Power)
    3. Force Shut Down (press the power button for 10 seconds)
Step 2 seemed to do the trick for me but I just tried to insert a blank CD-R into the drive but it ejects itself after a minute. I can hear the drive operating but the CD-R ejects itself. I cannot figure out while this occurs. I tried to insert a CD with data and the drive reads the CD without any problems and does not eject itself. It also does it with a blank DVD-R. What gives???
If anyone has any suggestions to help I would really appreciate it.

If you say that you have a combo drive, then the drive should be ejecting the DVD-R. If it's supposed to burn DVD's then that's definitely a problem. I'm not sure about the CD-R's though. I only think that it is a drive defect and may need replacing. Sorry about that! Good luck!

  • Macbook Pro won't start after Combo drive replacement

I have a Macbook Pro 1,1 which had a non-functiong Combo drive. I got a similar Combo drive out of a Macbook 1,1, and put it in the mbp. I have the HD partitioned in three with 10.6.3, 10.6.8 and Windows XP on the partitions.
Since replacing the Combo drive the computer will not boot from the 10.6.8 partition, but it boots fine from the other two! I have started it is taget disk mode, and connected to a Macbook and the Macbook will boot from the 10.6.8 partition.
When I try to start the mbp frpm the 10.6.8 partition I get the Apple logo, then the spinning wheel, then finally a stop sign (circle with a slash through it).
Does anyone have any ideas what I can do to resolve this problem?

    gim461,
try booting from the 10.6.3 partition, and run Disk Utility. Try verifying the 10.6.8 partition (using the Verify Disk button). Does it come back with a clean bill of health? If not, press the Repair Disk button. When that’s done, reboot into the 10.6.8 partition, but hold down the Shift key to boot into Safe mode. Does it let you boot into the 10.6.8 partition in Safe mode?

  • Need help troubleshooting my combo drive

I have a mini with a weird drive issue. The drive will read dvds but not cds. Any cd I insert will act lke its mounting for a few minutes and then it will eject. Dvd discs work normal. Any idea where to start? I have tried opening Disk Utility while the cd is trying to mount, but I only get the spinning beach ball.

The combo drives include two different lasers. One reads DVDs and the other reads/writes CDs. It's entirely possible your CD laser has gone out of alignment. It sounds to me like you might need to call AppleCare Support or take your Mac mini into an Apple Authorized Service Provider to have it checked out.

  • Lite-On Combo Drive not detected

Allo, I'm using a K7N2 Delta MS-6570 for my motherboard and I've been having some minor problems with combo drives. I had the same problem with a memorex drive and now with a lite-on drive. DVD-ROM/CD-RW. When I turn on or restart the computer windows doesn't see the drive. If I open My Computer it shows my floppy drive and hard drives but not my combo drive. This is fixed by running the Add Hardware Wizard. I open the Add Hardware Wizard and click next, it does it's little auto-search and goes to a screen that says "Have you already connected the hardware to the computer?" indicating it found no new hardware on the machine, however my combo drive pops into place on My Computer during this search and then works perfectly until next time I reboot and need to run the Add Hardware Wizard again. Not that big of a deal as it only takes 10 seconds, but I'd prefer not to have to do it every time I turn on the computer. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
    Thanks

  • Combo drive fails after a few seconds

    Hi,
I've got a powerbook G4 with DVD/CD-RW combo drive (about 3 - 4 years old). Just recently I played a DVD and a few seconds in, it stops playing. This is also happening with Audio CD's. After this happens, OSX 10.3.9 is unable to 'force quit' the application (DVD player, iTunes etc.). When I go into the system profiler, it is unable to find the optical drive I have just been using. I then restart but this does not solve the problem unless I remove the power supply i.e. battery and AC power cable. Also when I try to eject the disc, it won't and I need to remove the battery and power supply, reboot and then the drive is recognised again allowing me to eject the disc. Today I ran the extended hardware test and all passed fine.
Any ideas as to what my problem could be? Is the drive dead? Laser or memory problem?
To anyone who can offer advice, thanks in advance!
    Alan

    welcome to the discussions,
first i would recommend you verify and repair permissions, and look through this link and might download one or more of the freeware or shareware programs as mentioned to do some general cleanup and see if that helps, often it does the trick.
