G4 Digital 466 (Leopard Install) Boot from "C"

Thank you for Looking, I have operated my G4/466 since 2000.
My Upgrades over the years are:
Sonnet/Encore 1.8 gig processor
ATI Radeon 9600 Mac & PC Version
(3) 512 Sticks
I purchased Leopard, installed it on my Slave Drive (original 30 gig disk), worked Great.
decided to Update on my 60 Gig upgrade, my main Start up w/ the Family as Users.
Leopard never loaded, put the install disk back in, Ran TechTool, and I am not able to use my Command Start up Keys.
I cannot boot from CD/DVD by holding Down "C".
Are there any Options??
Disk Warrior will not even boot!

"My Reader is a Sony Upgrade DVD."
Some third-party drives aren't bootable in a Mac, and since Sony has outsourced the manufacture of its optical drives for some time, you never really know what you're buying from them with any given model. I had a Memorex (manufactured by LG) DVD±RW drive that wouldn't boot from the OS installer disk, without a little manual persuasion. After selecting the optical drive as the Startup Disk, the drive would attempt to do so for about 15-30 seconds, then it would eject it. My solution was to immediately close the tray w/disk as soon as it ejected, and then it would boot from it. This was more trouble than it's worth, so I replaced it with a Pioneer DVD±RW drive. Pioneer's drives have a reputation for being more Mac-compatible than many other brands. Did you set the Sony DVD drive's configuration jumper to MA "Master" (and not CS "Cable Select"), before you installed it?

  • Can I install Snow Leopard and boot from software RAID 1 (mirror)?

I have a Mac Pro (quad core 2.66 GHz) on order for my office workstation. Yeah, I know new ones are probably coming out early next year but due to budget and upcoming projects I need one now. What I'd like to do is replace the pre-installed 640GB drive with two 1 TB drives and mirror them. The 640GB drive will be redeployed to another machine in the office. Can I boot from the Snow Leopard install DVD, go to Disk Utility, setup a RAID 1 with the two drives, install Snow Leopard to the mirror and then boot off the mirror set?
I've searched and found offhand comments to the effect that installing to and booting from a software mirror is OK, but I'd like to know for sure that it's OK. Any experience that you have with such a configuration would be nice to hear.

Yes. But before you do read the following:

    Hardware or Software RAID?
RAID Hardware Vs RAID Software - What is your best option?
RAID is a method of combining multiple disk drives into a single entity in order to improve the overall performance and reliability of your system. The different options for combining the disks are referred to as RAID levels. There are several different levels of RAID available depending on the needs of your system. One of the options available to you is whether you should use a Hardware RAID solution or a Software RAID solution.
RAID Hardware is always a disk controller to which you can cable up the disk drives. RAID Software is a set of kernel modules coupled together with management utilities that implement RAID in Software and require no additional hardware.
    Pros and cons
Software RAID is more flexible than Hardware RAID. Software RAID is also considerably less expensive. On the other hand, a Software RAID system requires more CPU cycles and power to run well than a comparable Hardware RAID System. Also, because Software RAID operates on a partition by partition basis where a number of individual disk partitions are grouped together as opposed to Hardware RAID systems which generally group together entire disk drives, Software RAID tends be slightly more complicated to run. This is because it has more available configurations and options. An added benefit to the slightly more expensive Hardware RAID solution is that many Hardware RAID systems incorporate features that are specialized for optimizing the performance of your system.

  • G4 466 won't boot from CD

hi all, and greetings to the mac gurus.
    i'm stuck.
i have an old G4 that a friend no longer needed. he did a thorough wiping of the hdd before he handed to me, and i think that may be where the problem started.
this machine will not boot from a cd, no matter what i try. i have an OS9 (9.0) universal install CD, but holding down 'C' while powering on only gives me the flashing happymac/questionmark error. if i let the machine try and boot from it's HD, it flashes a happymac and then goes right to a kernel panic (grey circle with a slash). i've tried resetting NVRAM with cmd-opt-P-R, and also by booting into open firmware. i've also tried booting the cd from open firmware, but no love there either ('devalias cd' returns what appears to be a correct address, but 'boot cd' gives an error about the <load> method). i'm fairly sure that this machine was working before the HD was wiped, but i'm unsure of how to go about getting it back into bootable condition. any help would be greatly appreciated! thanks,
    -tony.
    G4 (digital audio) CD/RW drive, no DVD-ROM

    Hi, tetujin -
Your G4 (DA) model originally came with a model-specific version of OS 9.1, one which uses Finder v. 9.1.1. It can not use a retail OS 9.1 install CD.
Other than the original disks that came with the machine, the only OS 9 install disk it can use is a retail OS 9.2.1 Install CD.

  • Leopard Universal boot from Firewire

I've followed some instructions I've read here and on other Mac sites about how to created an external drive which can boot both PPC and Intel Macs. I THINK I did everything correctly, but I can't boot an Intel Mac with the external drive I used. First, I formatted my external drive on a PPC into three partitions. Then I created an image of the Leopard Installer disk and "restored" it to the first partition. Then I ran the installer from the first partition to the second partition (also on a PPC) and appeared to have a successful install of Leopard. Now, though, when I use this drive on an Intel Mac, even though that second partition appears as being bootable in the Startup Disk preference, I cannot boot from it - the Mac reverts to the first partition i.e. the one with the Leopard installer. Have I made a mistake here, or did I just get a bad installation from the first partition? Thanks.

Good post and difficult to answer without alot of trial and error. I've accomplished this objective but made some mistakes along the way and countermeasured them finally.
When you partitioned the external did you check under options in Disk Utility that the mapping way APM ie Apple Partition Map? I know Disk Utility is to pick the proper choice as default but I had some situations where it did not.
Second when you restore that image that's fine but why would you install Leopard on the next partition? No need. Once you restored the Leopard DVD to the partition using APM then you can boot a PPC or Intel Mac. Then you can install Leopard to your drive of choice. You can even open Disk Utility with that partition booted and use it to trouble shoot.
As far as the problem when you did install Leopard on that other partition I can't answer that question. The Macfixit article was good but as the guy stated in both articles he was not sure on the proper method. You don't need to make an image file first. You can just drag the DVD from the left hand column to "source."

  • How do i get a dvd with osx snow leopard to boot from since i lost mine?

Having trouble with my early 2009 intel iMac. I have reset PRAM and SRC, used disk utility in safe mode to repair disk permissions (several were found/repaired) and tried to verify disk. System said it could not verify disk because it needed to be repaired while booted from another source. I could not find my OSX Snow Leopard disk, tried to start from Leopard disk. Now the system wont go through boot process at all. the gray screen with logo and progress bar appears, but after a minute the computer shuts down. I did run the apple hardware test (start up while holding D key) and no hardware issues were found. This must be a software issue.
Is there a way I can download a copy of OSX Snow Leopard on my laptop so I can burn a disk to boot my iMac from so I can repair the disk?

You will need the Mac OS X DVD later, because it's clear that there's a problem with the hard disk. Your Mac turns off because fsck couldn't repair the hard drive, so Mac OS X can't start up. Your only option is to format the hard drive, because it's not possible to repair it.
As you have the Leopard DVD, insert it and hold the C key while your Mac is starting. Then, choose your language and go to Utilities menu (on the menu bar) > Disk Utility, choose your hard drive at the top of the sidebar, go to Erase tab and erase the drive. If it's working properly, close Disk Utility and reinstall OS X.
If it couldn't be erased, the hard drive is damaged and you need a different one

  • Snow Leopard- Not booting from start up disk

I am trying to do a clean installation of Snow Leopard on my Macbook. It previously  had Mavericks, I erased everything and inserted the Snow Leopard disk, attempting to reinstall. However I boot from disk holding down "C", and then I receive a "you need to restart your computer. Hold down the Power button until it turns off, then press the Power button again" message.
I tried booting in "safe mode" but that doesn't do anything.
    Anyone able to help?

If your MacBook shipped with something newer than Snow Leopard, it most likely won't run on Snow Leopard.
In the future, when you post a question to the forum, it's always a good idea to list the model of your Mac.

  • Help reverting to Tiger from Leopard - No boot from CD

    Hi there,
I am trying to revert to Tiger from Leopard on an Intel iMac that used to run Tiger. My plan is to wipe the drive and start fresh. Unfortunately, the computer will no longer start up from the Tiger installer DVD or an extrenal drive running Tiger. I am running 10.5.2. Has there been a ROM upgrade or something that prevents now Tiger from running? Any ideas?

Can I please ask a question.
I have leopard (10.5.2) installed on an intel Imac. I have just bought a Formac mini disk (160G USB) because I would like to install Tiger on it. When I bought the Imac it originally came with Tiger (Version 10.4.2) and the disk from what I am reading on these forums would indicate that it is a install disk rather than a retail version. The disk is grey and again I am assuming it is an intel install disk (don't know how to check).
Anyhow, in order to install Tiger onto the USB mini disk, I believe I need to boot up the from Tiger install disk and after the start chime begins hold down the 'C' button from some time until the Tiger install menu appears. My problem is that the Tiger install menu does not appear (tried this on several occasions) and it continues to boot up to Leopard.
Can someone please tell me if I am doing something wrong, or even what I am trying to do is able to be done. I think I have covered and put down all of the problems here ?
    Appreciate any advice

    Great!
Now in the DU there is a very few problems (what, i readed in the past, we can ignore).
    Probably. See this article: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1448?viewlocale=it_IT
For the ACL, in the old HD i istalled ACL Fix for soulve, don't know if is necessary to do it, weiting for same suggestion or if is a risk for the HD stability, so maybe, i can ignore that too.
I don't know what "ACL Fix" is. Running a +*Repair Permissions+* on your internal HD with Disk Utility (in your Applications/Utilities folder) should fix anything that needs to be fixed.
*QUESTIONS: now theresn't the Apple applications !?!*
*Garage Band, iPhoto, iMovie, iDVD, Pages, Numbers, Keynote ?? where they are?*
*I try to find them on Leopard DVD with Pacifist but i can't find it.*
No. The Retail Leopard disc doesn't include Apple's iLife apps.
But they should have been on your TM backups.
*Maybe all this application are only on Tiger DVD so, choosing inizialize and istall, i lost the app.*
Yes. You might be able to restore them from your Time Machine backups. Go into Time Machine (the starry background), see if they're there, and try to restore them.
If not, you should be able to restore them from the second Tiger disk that came with your Mac.

  • Can I restore a time machine osx lion backup using snow leopard install DVD?

    Hi.
I've been using osx lion but my hard drive died. Fortunately I have been making time machine backups.  Since I downloaded lion from the app store I only have the snow leopard install disks.
I know there is an option to restore from a time machine backup using the snow leopard disk, but since the time machine backup is of a later operating system (lion) will that  time machine restore work?
If it won't, can you recommend how to restore from my time machine backup?
    Thanks.

Once the replacement hard drive is installed, boot from your original Snow Leopard Installation Disk.  From there format the harddrive and install Snow Leopard and then download and install its Updates. Next, navigate to the Mac App Store and login using the Exact same Apple User ID that you did the first time you downloaded Lion.  You will now be able to download and install the Lion OS for Free. Download and install the Lion Updates.  Lastly, using Migration Assistant, migrate your Apps and Data from the Time Machine external hard drive to your internal Lion harddrive.  This method should give you a very stable version of Lion on your internal harddrive complete with all your previous settings, Apps and Data.
    Hope this helps

  • Xserve G4 Won't boot from Anything

    Everyone:
I have a G4 Xserve (slot load) with 2 GB of RAM installed. It was running X.3.9 just as happy as a lark. I migrated all users from the server to use it as a test environment. My first test was to upgrade it to Tiger, which so far has not gone very smoothly.
The Xserve has all 4 bays populated. Bays 1&2 are mirrored using Apple's RAID software, this is the system drive. Bays 3&4 are set as a RAID 0.
My Upgrade goes like this: I inserted the Tiger Server CD (no DVD drive), double-clicked the installer and the server rebooted. The installed seemed to go smooth, but I did have to walk away from it towards the end. When I came back, the server was stuck at a blue screen and a moveable mouse pointer. Couldn't do anything else.
This forced a hard reset, of which the same thing happened. So I thought, no big deal, let's just redo the installation. Insert Tiger CD again, hold down C key....server boots from hard drive and gets stuck.
    Weird.
Ok, let's try booting from the Panther CD. Reboot server, hold down mouse button, eject Tiger CD, insert Panther CD, reboot, hold C key....server boots from hard drive and gets stuck.
Dang. This was supposed to be an easy upgrade.
Just so things aren't confused, I pull out the drives with the Raid 0 (Bays 3 & 4). Same process.
OK, maybe it's the Raid on the system drive, so I pull out one of the drives. Same boot process.
Reset the PRAM, just for grins, no change.
Alright, let's see if I can force it to recognize the CD, pull out all the drives and put in a spare, brand new drive from the shelf.
Same thing, won't boot from CD. Neither Panther or Tiger. At least I get the blinking icon that there's no OS installed.
Put the #1 system drive back in, connect an external firewire CD Drive, still won't boot from CD. I still get to a blank blue screen, though.
Try booting in Single User Mode, I still get the same thing, boots from disk to blue screen.
Now I've spent an afternoon of my time and another techs time and we're both scratching our heads. I recalled that I could also issue boot commands via the Sys ID button. Dig out manual, find the combination, same story. Boots from hard drive to the blue screen and stops.
Seems like any input at boot time is being ignored, although it will eject the CD if the mouse is held down. I've verified that the machine is not locked (the light is off). I also opened it up to make sure that the lock switch wasn't partially stuck. Not sure if there's anything else to check.
    Thoughts?

does that mean I have to send it to Apple to fix
No. Apple changes the bootROMs from model to model so you can't use the same install disc on different models. It could their way of dealing with piracy.
Example; Say I bought a new MacBook Pro and I had an iMac that was still running Leopard. I couldn't use the Snow Leopard install disc from the new MBP to install SL on the iMac.

  • Running 10.5.8 on Intel Core Duo, Snow Leopard disc (purchased from Apple) won't work

I am running 10.5.8 on my iMac and want to upgrade to Lion. Was told to upgrade to Snow Leopard first. Purchased the Snow Leopard install DVD from Apple, but it begins the installation process then says CD is dirty. Hooked up an external DVD drive and tried again, got the same message. I literally unwrapped the disc and put it directly into the drive...it couldn't have gotten so scratched or dirty that it wouldn't work.
    Here is my system info:
    Model Name:          iMac
      Model Identifier:          iMac4,1
      Processor Name:          Intel Core Duo
      Processor Speed:          1.83 GHz
      Number Of Processors:          1
      Total Number Of Cores:          2
      L2 Cache:          2 MB
      Memory:          1.5 GB
Any ideas on what I can do? I've read that there were tons of problems with this disc/upgrade...
    Thanks!

Call the place you bought Snow Leopard from, and ask for them to replace the disk as it or your DVD drive is obviously defective.   As others have noted, you can't upgrade to Lion regardless.
That said, before you install 10.6, be sure you really are prepared for it: https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-2455
And if after getting a replacement 10.6 disk it fails to install, verify your PRAM battery is not over 4 years old, and that your optical drive isn't dirty by bringing it in for service.

  • Cant boot from snow leopard dvd and install crashes computer

Folks, hi, newbie to this forum but at wits end.
I have a MacBook Pro 17inch mid 2010 model. I added the OMG disk doubler and ditched the internal dvd, so I now have 2 X 500GB hard drives, one of which has the OSX. This disk in trouble and Disk Utility says that it needs repairing, but i need to repair after booting from an different disk.
So, I added a usb dvd drive and put in snow leopard. It would not boot via holding down 'c' and the option key only saw the current drive. No problems I thought, I will install onto the second hard drive and boot from that. The process got a fair way though (20 mins) and the computer crashed. I checked that it is GUID, tried again, and ditto. So, I made a new partition that was nice and clean -- and ditto. Stuck about now, I tried to format a usb hard drive -- ditto. Hmm, didnt want to, but out came the second drive and in went the old dvd drive -- same issue -- could not boot using c button and the option key did not recognise the snow leopard install. Out came the drive and I went to the apple store -- they told me that the Snow Leopard I had brought was an upgrade and that I needed a Box Set. $169 later and - you guessed it -- the dvd is the same, no start on c, not recognised on option, and the computer crashes if I try and install to the second hard drive or an external drive.
    Help anyone??

when i go to system prefs- startup, the dvd does not show up in the list of startup drives. The apple salesman said that the OSX install disk I purchased was not a start up disk / full install but rather an upgrade only disk. That is why he said to use the box set as a 'full install' - but both appear to not start up or be able to do a clean install. I just end up with a set of files call Mac OSX install files.

  • I need to have both Snow leopard and Lion...Mountain lion running on my iMac.  How do I install Lion or Mountain lion on an Ext H D and boot from it?

My software is obsolete (and now dead) in 10.7 so I need to keep Snow leopard alive to run that- but now things like TurboTax are dropping support for 10.6 or lower and I have to have lion or Mountain Lion available.  I actually downloaded Lion onto a thumb drive but never installed it when I found out that it would immedaitely render all my FreeHand files inaccessible (years of work!),  Now that I am forced to have an OS above 10.6 I was hoping I could install whichever--Lion or Mountain Lion onto an external hard drive and figure  out how to boot from that (found  something in archives I think, but I need words of one syllable or less).  This way I could, ideally, boot from either the External hard drive in the higher OS when needed, or from the internal hard drive when I need to use Snow leopard.  There is a long story here, but I think this is the gist.  I wasn not sure if this should be asked here or in either Lion or Mountain Lion (both of which I have, essentially, ignored since I would not be moving up until I could figure out how to access those old files of forms and drawings00but now I have no choice.  I am panicking now that I HAVE to make the move anbd cannot afford to buy another  Mac just to keep two separately running.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  i asked Apple when Lion came out and they said there was no way to partition (even if I KNEW how to do that) the haaard drive and install both on my iMac-- but I "think" this is a bit different and possible???   Thanks  (once/if I figure this out, I need to figure out how to back-up but that is another matter)

You need to move to Windows 7, because Apple is now releasing a new OS X version annually and it's playing havoc with people's hardware and software.
Windows 7 will get support until 2020, that's 8 years of software stability, however you do need to make System Restore disks, boot disk and another on a hard drive to self restore (like TimeMachine is for OS X)
Apple has no plans to change their currrent behavior as all they care about is selling new hardware with a shiny new OS X verison on it.
If you wait to move, what will happen is you'll lose that full 8 years and will have to swtich to a newer Windows sooner
Windows 7 machines are still widely avaialble, despite Windows 8 (a failure) being pushed currently.
Running three OS X operating systems on one machine is quite a chore reserved for only seasoned computer geeks, then it's only going to last X months as the next OS X version will be released, then the next a year after that.
Another method would be to get a virtual machine software (virtualbox is free) and install Windows 7 into that to ease your transitition if you cant' spring for a Windows 7 machine, preferablly a tower that will last a long time.
Here is a method to run Snow Leopard in Parallels, however it's a unapproced hack and not for the comptuer newbie.
    http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1365439
We have no control over Apple's OS X release cycle, nor the third party developers who make their own decisions what to support.
Our only choice as users to stop using both products and seek software/hardware stability.
