G4 Digital Audio firmware update?

Hy, I have by a Mac G4 after this week, and I love it:)
So my question is : there are a firmware update for this model for OS X Tiger? Because I found a firmware for MDD. So firmware for G4 DA & QS is for only OS 9?
Sorry, but I speak not so good english:)

Unfortunately you do need OS 9 in order to be able to apply the firmware updates.
If you select the Apple menu from the Finder menu bar, click on About This Mac and then click on More Info..., what Boot ROM Version is shown in the hardware overview? If it's 4.2.8, the update has already been applied.
The notes say:
Firmware Update 4.2.8 includes improvements to starting up Mac OS X from the local hard disk, FireWire target disk mode, network startup, gigabit networking (on systems with gigabit hardware), and system stability. This update also adds support for additional security options that allow the Open Firmware to be password-protected.
If the update hasn't already been applied and you don't need any of the above improvements (and you're not experiencing any problems with 'system stability'), perhaps it's better just to leave things as they are. If it were crucial, I expect the OS X installer wouldn't allow you to install the OS.

  • Wired popping / jitter following firmware update

My ipod touch that I have had for a month and working fine has developed a wired popping during digital audio following updating the firmware last week.
Strangly this is only affected by the digital output. I have two docks connected to my hifi one is analogue and works absolutly fine however three weeks ago I upgraded to an Onkyo digital dock transport so that I can connect to and external DAC (Cambridge Audio DACMagic) which sounds awsome. Following the firmware update no so awsome so initially thought that it must be an issue with the dock as would be unlikely to be an Apple software issue. So got the dock exchanged yesterday to eliminate this as a potential suspect. However the issue still exists.
I cannot believe that I am the only one that has discovered this as I cannot see any similar posts but then again maybe not so many are using the digital output.
I also use the ipod in the car as my new car has a USB socket that connects and controls the ipod via the car's hifi. This also sounds awfull following the update.
My natural reaction was to restore the old firmware but understand this is not possible although I have found what looks like it in the recycle bin. However I have performed a hard reset and a full restore.
Any help would be fantastic as this ipod now sounds little better than an old cassette walkman with an anoying random popping in the background. If it is of any consequence the popping occurs not only with stored tracks but also with Last FM.
    Thanks

According to what i see on Appletoolbox.com looks like we are not going to see a new update 4.2 until November. Having looked at various sites I am now aware how big this problem is. Hope Apple come up with a solution before then or they will have a mutiny on their hand and growing community of dissatisfied ipod touch owners.
As mine is so new it may be worth returning as unsuitable for purpose as it is Apple's product and their softare not third party. I will talk with trading standards or maybe a good one for Watchdog after the iphone situation.
Looks like I will be using my notebook for music.

  • Audio in problem after firmware update

    hey all,
I've recently started using garageband to record and play around with my music, and I love it. Unfortunately, after installing the recent firmware update, my computer's audio in jack doesn't work anymore. It recognizes that there's something plugged in, but instead of having an signal, I get this clicking that clips the audio input at almost any input volume. I have tried it both with my bass and just the cable, and I have also just plugged some headphones into the jack- same results for everything. Is there anything i can do about it or do I just have to wait for another firmware update before I can use garageband again?
    2.2Ghz Macbook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.10)

well what happened was I was updating iTunes (7.3.1) and the updater said a quicktime update and a firmware update were both available so I downloaded and installed and now the problem. It's like a really fast click track when I plug in and it's not just in garageband, I'm getting it in the audio-in option in the system preferences menu. Do you think doing a system restore would solve this problem?
PS- I believe the update was something along the lines of a "kmbp firmware update" I think that's what it was called... :/

  • 1.1.4 firmware update - does it improve audio quality?

I'm really confused here as I've read different opinions on various Apple ipod touch forum sites that some people swear after updating the firmware the audio quality has improved greatly (e.g. better bass/mid-range responses, louder volume). I called Apple retail store and was told no, that the only thing the firmware update fixes are bugs. Well, I still have the 1.1.3 version (mine came with the January updates) and so am debating whether to update or not. Anyone who has on this forum, have you noticed any improvement made to the audio quality?

To all: so do you guys recommend I still upgrade to the 1.1.4? FWIW, I haven't experienced any bug issue with my touch (I have yet to test the internet access of the touch, and from what I've heard some people have reported that their safari crashed with the 1.1.3 version; when they upgraded to 1.1.4 all was said to be fine).

Powermac G4 Digital audio   Mac OS X (10.4)

    Hi, profclimber!
For successful installation of OS X 10.2 or later, your Mac must have firmware updated to version 4.2.8. To check for this, boot to open firmware (depress and hold cmdoption+of at startup). When the command line screen appears, the firmware version will appear on the top line of the screen. To exit open firmware afterwards, simply power down with the power button, or enter "mac-boot" at the screen prompt, followed by pressing the Return key, which will restart the Mac. If the firmware is not up-to-date, go here for the installation instructions and download. Please note that if a firmware update is necessary, it must be installed using OS 9.1 (or a version of OS 9 later than OS 9.1 which has been installed on a drive in the Mac, versus being run directly from a disc or run over a network, etc).
In order to successfully install Tiger, you should be using a (black) retail install disc. (Gray) OEM discs shipped with a different model computer will very likely cause problems.
Before installing Tiger, use Disk Utility's Erase option to reformat the startup drive drive using the Mac OS Extended format. In that window, you'll see a button named "Security Options...". Click on it and check the box to overwrite zeros to the drive. Overwriting zeros will take some time, but will insure that your hard drive is clean of any old data artifacts which could possibly interfere with your install. It will also map out any bad sectors which may on the drive, preventing possible data corruption when you do the fresh install of Tiger.
I'd recommend disconnecting any third-party peripheral devices you may have attached when doing the install. When your installation is complete, you might launch Disk Utility and Run Repair Permissions on the startup volume before running Software Update. Do the same before any subsequent runs of Software Update and run it once more after your system software is completely updated.

  • G4 Digital Audio Firwmare

    Hi there
I have a G4 Digital Audio now running OSX. However since switching to OSX it has become unstable, there is a firmware update for this G4, however it requires you to use OS9, which i no longer have and have erased from my hard Disk.
How can I apply the Firmware without OS9 or is this not possible?
    Peter

Is the fact that it is unstable perhaps because i chose to use "case sensitife journalled" as the file system?
I have checked google and it seems that other people have experianced issues with this filesystem.

  • Airport Express (802.11n) - clipping digital audio output

I just replaced two older Airport Express with the new n-version. But for both new units, the digital audio output regularly pauses (skips) briefly every 10 seconds or so. It's unusable.
The music is being sent via iTunes to digital capable B&W remote speakers.
There is no problem with analog.

The problem persists with different cables, and after updating the Airport Express firmware to v7.3.1.
Once again, the problem does not occur with the older Airport Express - g model.

  • Update on 10.6.8 fails due to digital signature on update is missing

wanting to install the Parallels version 10 and it won't work on 10.6.8 version of my Mac OS so I learned how to go to the software update which indicates an update is available. When I go ahead and load the update it runs fine and then stops with a message that the Macbook Pro EFI Firmware Update can't be saved. It says the digital signature on the update is missing or invalid.
I don't know if the digital signature is on my computer or the update? I would upgrade to a more recent version of the OS but don't know what will work.
    Can anyone help?

Parallels 10 isn't compatible with 10.6 according to the web site.
    Mac Requirements
    Hardware:
A Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor (Core Solo and Core Duo processors are no longer supported)
Minimum 2 GB of memory (4 GB of memory is recommended to run Windows 7 in a virtual machine or if your host OS is Lion)
About 850 MB of disk space on the boot volume (Macintosh HD) for Parallels Desktop installation
About 15 GB of disk space for each virtual machine
    Software:
OS X Yosemite 10.10 or later
OS X Mavericks 10.9.4 or later
Mac OS X Mountain Lion 10.8.5 or later
Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5 or later
Check that your computer is compatible with Mountain Lion/Mavericks/Yosemite.
To check the model number hold down the option/alt key, go to the Apple menu and select System Information.
MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) model number 5,1 or higher
MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) model number 3,1 or higher
    Your Mac needs:
OS X v10.6.8 or OS X Lion already installed
2 GB or more of memory (More is better - 4 GB minimum seems to be the consensus)
8 GB or more of available space
Check to make sure your applications are compatible. PowerPC applications are no longer supported after 10.6.

    Do a backup before installing.
If you can/do upgrade, I recommend you make a copy of the installer and move it out of your Applications folder. The installer self-destructs. The copy will keep you from having to download the installer again.  You can make a bootable USB stick to install using this free program.

  • No updatable devices found after firmware update

Unfortunately I didn't check here before doing the latest updates. I dl'd the following on the night of July 1:
    2007-07-01 01:49:08 -0400: Installed "SuperDrive Firmware Update" (2.1)
    2007-07-01 01:49:31 -0400: Installed "iTunes" (7.3)
    2007-07-01 01:49:35 -0400: Installed "Safari 3 Beta Update" (3.0.2)
    2007-07-01 01:53:02 -0400: Installed "Mac OS X Update (Intel)" (10.4.10)
    2007-07-03 00:30:01 -0400: Installed "Audio Update 2007-001" (1.0)
Since then each time I restart the computer the SuperDrive Update launches and tells me no updatable devices have been found. But this machine has a SD, unless I'm very much mistaken. Why won't the update take? Is it related to the ex HD issues I've been reading about here with 10.4.10?
I also just looked at my sys log and it could be its own novel since these updates. I was going to post it in hopes it would help the Mac guys smarter than I, but I think it would flood out this post.
I am also having the internet drop issue, again only when I'm on battery power, but I understand that's a bigger issue than just my machine. My Safari windows seem to be hanging and giving me the spinning beach-ball a lot when I try to scroll.
I ran disk repair on permissions, that's all sorted out. I don't know what else to do to resolve the firmware update. Please help. Thanks!

At the risk of sounding stupid.. how would I delete the download?
And if I have a SuperDrive, which I do, why wouldn't the update apply to me and why would Software Updater have prompted me to download it in the first place?

  • [Solved] Difficulty getting digital audio to play in all applications

This is probably a noobish question...
My motherboard supports digital audio out via S/PDIF cable (optical), as well as standard analog audio. I have a stereo receiver that I've plugged my optical cable into.
When I go to systemsettings > Multimedia > Phonon > Audio Playback, I put the "HDA Intel S/PDIF Digital" device on top and clicked Test. I could hear the test tone (playback source is PCM).
However, if I go to play an MP3 or whatever, I have to go into the settings for each application and tell it to use that particular device. Some applications (such as Firefox) do not have obvious settings for audio playback. Is there a way to solve the problem once and for all (tell the audio system "send everything through the digital device all the time")?
(I read the relevant section of the wiki, but it is focused on getting sound out of your digital device, not making it the default.)
Any other advice or gotchas about using digital audio would also be appreciated.
    Thanks!

My .asoundrc looks the same as above. But just for fun, I also tried removing it and restarting alsa, with no change.
I'm testing output by going to systemsettings > Multimedia > Phonon and clicking the Test button with "HDA Intel (AD198x Digital)" selected. Nothing comes out through SPDIF, though it does play through analog (I have two separate pairs of headphones plugged in, one to the analog jack and one to a headphone amp plugged through the digital port) so I can tell which port the audio is coming from).
I've checked the hardware volume, and it appears to be in order. The amp is not reporting any audio signal on the optical port. I tried switching out the cable just to be paranoid, and still nothing. I believe this is a software problem.
    Any ideas?

  • When external speakers are plugged in to headphone jack, sound randomly goes back to internal speakers or digital audio setting, then back again

I have an essentially new MacBook Pro with Lion and all updates applied, and am wondering if this is a hardware or software problem.  Essentially with something plugged into the headphone jack, things work as they are supposed to for a while, then the sound will switch back to internal speakers, or sometimes 'digital out' (I can watch it change in the system settings), and then often switch back.  It doesn't seem to follow any sort of pattern or be related to any specific application that could be open, and happens with different sources of audio (iTunes, streaming from the web), and different external speakers or headphones plugged in.

Sounds hardware related. If it's brand new, and you're still under warranty I would have it checked out.
I have not experienced this on my computer.
As I understand it, you have analog RCA outputs from an 1/8" to left and right RCA outputs. when you're randomly using the computer, it'll switch to internal speakers, then to digital audio, back to your stereo analog external speakers.
This should not be happening and if it's happening with streaming content (I am unaware of anything that streams in 5.1 digital audio) then this must be something that an apple specialist should look at and consider.
Does this happen with the headphone jack out? when you hold your finger over the headphone jack area does a red beam come out of it *blinking* or just on? This will be a good indicator that your audio hardware is faulty. are you running HDMI out?

  • Can I use HDMI port on my Macbook Pro for digital audio INPUT?

Trying to find a way to get digital audio input to my new MBP with retina.  HDMI supports audio and video, so can I use that port as an input?

It is not recommenced to use TimeMachine in a partition, either on the boot drive or externals because of problems in the past with that arrangement.
You also need hardware protection in addition to software protection.
If you want to do what I do, which is have a second 50% partition bootable clone of the first.
1: Use BootCamp software to create yourself a 50% sized partition, then exit the program. (you also can do it in Disk Utility, but it's tricky)
2: Head to Disk Utility and select the BOOTCAMP partition and change it's name and format to OS X Extended Journaled.
(To map off bad sectors in advance, use Disk Utility Erase with the next to last on the right selection, improves reliability and makes for faster reads)
3: Download Carbon Copy Cloner, now select your Macintosh HD partition and clone it to the second partition.
4: Whenever you want to boot from the second partition, just hold the option key down on the keyboard to select it to boot from.
You can access the folders on the second boot partition as well, to grab deleted files you accidentally erased (which is a rare thing for most to occur) however you should leave it alone and as a clone.
You can update the clone when you need to, or schedule it to run automatically.
You should also do this occasionally with a external drive, as the internal drive can die and take both partitions with it.
I currently do this with my laptop, that way if I'm mobile and have a serious issue, I can boot from the cloned partition in seconds without carrying a drive around. If I need large space for something I wasn't aware of, I can erase the clone partition and later clone it again.
Software does all the work, just pick a time your not using the machine and let it work. Painless really.

I have spent far too long trying to find where this output is located.

I thought that may have to be the case.
Can I please ask you a few other questions?
If I want to get a digital audio output not using a HDMI (My DAC doesn't have this input), can I get a good result with something like a Musical Fidelity V link USB to S/Pdif converter or a M2Tech Hiface digital audio interface? Sorry,  I cannot make a recommendation on either of those products as I am not familiar with them.
Is it possible to change the sound card with an optical or coaxial output? Your notebook's sound is an integrated solution. It is a chip soldered (integrated) onto the system board. It can't be updated.
Thanks again for the kind help!

  • Mavericks upgrade and Thunderbolt firmware update?

    Hi Guys,
last week I installed mavericks to an external hard drive and am currently using my early 2011 MBP as a dual boot using Lion and Mavericks. The main reason is because my audio software is no longer being updated in Lion.
My next purchase once I start using Mav full time, will either be a belkin thunderbolt dock or the akitio thunder dock. So I can run my hard drives, tv etc from the thunderbolt port.
Problem is, I'm unsure if I can update my thunderbolt port in my machine, and both docks will only run on thunderbolt two.
in about this mac my information is this:
    Model Identifier:     MacBookPro8,2
    Boot ROM Version:     MBP81.0047.B27
    SMC Version (system):     1.69f4
If I install the firmware updates here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1237
will I be able to update the firmware for my thunderbolt port from
    Firmware Version:     22.1
    Port Micro Firmware Version:     2.0.7
to whatever the latest one is, because I saw a post saying the latest frimware version is 25.1
    any advice/ideas?
    Cheers Iain.

I emailed Akitio and got this reply.
"The AKiTiO Thunder Dock is using Thunderbolt 1 but it's compatible with  both Thunderbolt 1 and Thunderbolt 2, so you can use it on earlier  machines as well as the latest Thunderbolt 2 machines. However, the  minimum system requirement is Mac OS X 10.9, so you will need to use  Mavericks.
Regarding the EFI and SMC firmware, it's good to use the latest version  and we usually recommend to update it as part of our troubleshooting  process. The page you provided is the one I would have suggested too, so  you can follow the links there and update your machine.
Keep in mind that this will not upgrade your Thunderbolt port as you put it, it only updates the firmware of your system."
