G4 (Digital Audio) Won't power on

I added a superdrive to my unit. Everything running fine for 30 minutes. My screen froze while I was downloading and I had to use power button to shut down. Other keyboard exits wouldn't work. When I press power botton it lights up till I let go, then goes out. Main and CPU fans run as normal. I can press power button, it lights up and shuts down after 5 seconds like normal. Tried reseting PMU. No change.
Noticed drive power cable pinched in door. I can see bare wire. The case is sharp in that corner. Can't see any fuse in power supply.
New power supply time?

Welcome to the Discussions.
"Noticed drive power cable pinched in door. I can see bare wire. The case is sharp in that corner."
If the wire is shorting out, that might be preventing startup.
If you can free the wire from the door, and wrap the bare part with electrical tape, that might fix it.

  • G4 Digital audio won't start up

I've got a hold of a G4 Digital audio which won't start up. The power button lights up for a split second and then shuts down. I've noticed that the red light on the m/board does the same.
Any pointers as to what the problem might be ?
    Many thanks,
    Tony

Do you know if this G4 has been sitting for an extended period, unplugged from an electrical outlet? If that's the case, the internal battery is undoubtedly very weak or dead, so I'd recommend replacing it (3.6-volt ½AA lithium). Have you checked all of the critical internal components, and made sure that the connections are secure and that the memory and PCI cards are fully-seated? If left unused for an extended period, there may be oxidization in the slots, compromising the connection. I'd remove the memory and PCI/AGP cards and inspect the gold-plated contacts. If darkened, I'd gently clean them with a soft gum eraser. Be sure to blow off all rubber shavings, and then reinstall them.

  • G4 (Digital Audio) won't turn on! Help?

Pretty self-explanitory, I press the power button on the front of the machine and the white power button LED comes on and then immediately fades off. No reaction from the monitor, cooling fan, logic board, or anything. I checked and there are NO loose wires inside anywhere. I don't understand why the LED comes on but nothing else.

You probably need a new internal memory battery. But first do a PMU reset. See Mac PRAM, NVRAM, CUDA/PMU & Battery Tutorial

  • Digital Audio won't start up

Need a little help from the experts. Finally scored a clinker off eBay ... my first in about a dozen tries.
When I push the start button on the 533mhz DA, the red LED on the motherboard lights briefly - then goes out; the cooling fan starts - then dies. This is true whether I continue to hold the start button or release it.
I have removed the start button assembly and fitted it to another DA ... where it works.
I have checked the voltage of the PRAM battery - which reads good - and also swapped it with another working battery. No help.
I have pushed (once) the PMU button and held it down about 15 seconds. No joy.
    I have checked the pinout readings of the 22 pin main connector; connecting across pins 22 & 11 gives a steady 28v., across 1 & 11, 4 & 11, and 10 & 11 gives a momentary spike and then nothing.
If I read the Power Supply Voltage Test Article correctly it looks as if I'm ready for a new Power Supply, but is there anything I may have missed? I'd hate to spring for a Power Supply and then discover I'd missed something else - probably obvious.
Any help would be appreciated &c. You guys have contributed greatly to this tinkerer's education ... without the Forum I'd likely still be wondering where's the slot I put my quarter in.
    Regards ..... Jon

  • Won't Change Back to Regular Audio After Setting "Encoded Digital Audio"

I have a first generation Mac Pro, and I've just recently upgraded to Lion. I used to play a fair bit of DVDs on the computer, but recently I've slacked off doing that. Today I popped in a DVD to play and then opened DVD Player up. Everything worked fine as it was supposed to. I've got the DVD player set to send digital audio out so I can get surround sound through my receiver. When I quit DVD player I don't get sound anymore through the optical out unless it's encoded digital audio. I've had that problem before, and to solve it I'd go to Audio Midi Setup and change the format to what it was prior to being set to "Encoded Digital Audio" by DVD Player. However, now with the upgrade to Lion it will not switch back. The option to do it is there, and I can click on 16, 20, or 24bit audio all day long and I won't get audio output from that port unless I restart the computer.
This is obviously a system bug that needs to be reported to Apple if they aren't aware of it already, but what I'm wanting to know is how can I avoid restarting to get audio back? Restarting Core Audio doesn't do the trick as I've already tried that.

From the iPod's Main Menu choose Videos -> Settings and make sure TV Out is set to Off.
Otherwise, try a hard reset as well.  To do this, press and hold both the Select (Center) and Menu buttons together long enough for the Apple logo to appear.

  • Upgrading from 10.4.11 to 10.5.8  on my G4 Power Mac Digital audio-is it worth it and how do i find the 10.5.8

Hey Gang.   How's it been going?  I still have the same G4 Digital Audio which came used but with a clean OS, which I managed to up
grade to reach the 10.4.11.  Its works great and I love it.  I can only imagine using a real Mac Pro 2012.  The software is legacy and It will not support the QuarkExpress9 for example.  So what if I found and upgraded to the 10.5.8 or the max OS my G4 can handle?  Is it worth it?
    Thanks

    Hi,
Depends what part of 10.5 you think you need, but 10.5 does not support Classic Apps, requires 3 times the resources & space, is expensive, & slower than Tiger/10.4 even on a G5 Quad with 10 GB of RAM.
    I have run 10.5.8 on a DA/450 MHz/1GB, & it is possible.
    Leopard requirements/10.5.x...

        * 512MB of memory (I say 1.5GB for PPC at least, 2-3GB minimum for IntelMacs)
        * DVD drive for installation
        * 9GB of available disk space (I say 30GB at least)

I recently (Jan 2012) acquired a MacBook Pro (MBP) running 10.7.4 and an AirPort Express.  I also have an old PPC G4 tower (Digital Audio model) running 10.4.11.  The OS software on both machines is totally up to date.  AirPort Utility on the G4 is 5.4.2 and on 6.0 on the MBP.  I bought a used AirPort card for the G4, I believe it is 802.11b compatible, and the wireless data rate is specified at 11 Mbps.  Being a newbie to wireless, it took me many days to get these two machines to link up.  This network is not connected to the internet, and there no other networks in the vicinity.
My last problem to solve is the very slow file transfer speeds between the two machines. The transfer time seems to vary depending on which machine I use to initiate the transfer, and which direction the transfer is going.  For example: If I initiate the transfer from the G4 and send a 5.4MB file to the MBP it takes 1:32 (min:sec), while the same file going from the MBP to the G4 takes 27 seconds.  On the other hand if the transfer is initiated on the MBP, going from the MBP to the G4 takes 2:56, while going from the G4 to the MBP takes 1:59.  I realize that these times are not actual wireless transfer times but includes the entire transfer process.
Both machines and the AirPort Express are within a 4-foot radius.  Both machines are set to radio channel 2.  The AirPort Express is set for 802.11n(802.11b/g compatible) with WPA/WPA2 Personal wireless security.
    Any help would be appreciated.

    BDAqua,
    Thanks for the response.
Apple has used the term "Digital Audio" to identify this machine.  System Profiler has the following information:
    Machine Name:          Power Mac G4
      Machine Model:          PowerMac3,5
      CPU Type:          PowerPC G4  (2.1)
      Number Of CPUs:          1

L2 Cache (per CPU):          256 KB
      Memory:          768 MB
      Bus Speed:          133 MHz
      Boot ROM Version:          4.3.3f2
      Serial Number:          XBxxxxxMK9
      Sales Order Number:
Yes, I could connect them by ethernet if all I wanted to do was transfer files, but I would like to network them so I could use wireless internet.  The machines are not always so close together, I did that to simplify the testing.  With the very slow transfer speeds I am reluctant to move ahead with the internet step.

  • Digital Audio G4 and Radeon 9800 Pro

Has anyone had the same fuss w/a Digital Audio and ATI Radeon 9800 Pro Mac Edition? Been through about 5 cards (lost count somewhat) and constantly getting a display of the video card (with its power connector flashing red) on a black screen. Only by opening the box and reconnecting the power connections, and sometimes reseating the card, do I get successful results, with the Mac booting properly.
No other card (others that I use do not require an additional power connector like the 9800 does) seems to have this problem; all boot properly.
There is a Sonnet 1.8 Ghz Dual CPU upgrade, 2 internal hard drives, a raid card, and FW 800 and FW 400/USB2 cards, but additional power connections for those have been unplugged. I'm good with letting any external devices run on their own power.
Thanks much, to anyone that may have a suggestion or a solution.

    Hi-
With regards to the connector graphic, this invariably means that there isn't power connected.
State the obvious, but, have you tried pulling power from a different connector? Maybe try a new extension........ Molex connectors can work loose from the cap, and slide back when attaching to a device. This would give the appearance of being connected, though in reality, otherwise.
Have you tried without any of the PCI cards installed? I wouldn't want to remove the processor, either, though the dual does pull some power at boot. The DA PSU, however, should be able to handle both the processors and the 9800..... unless the PSU has a weak 12v/5v/3.3v rail....
Pulling the PCI cards will clear up whether or not the problem is with power in the PCI bus.
As for posting a picture, you need to host the picture at a site like Photobucket or Imageshack. Then, place a link (produced at the host site) in your thread.

  • Can I use the optical digital audio cable to connect INSTEAD of the hdmi?  My tv only has 2 hdmi ports, and they're both taken

Can I use the optical digital audio cable to connect INSTEAD of the hdmi?  My tv only has 2 hdmi ports, and they're both taken

I'm afraid that's very misleading and inaccurate.
Firstly an adapter won't work, it would need to be a converter and then if it's a compliant converter it won't let you watch HDCP protected content such as that from netflix or from the iTunes Store.
Secondly, whilst I'm not going to debate whether component or HDMI is better, component is certainly not better if it's been converted from an HDMI signal. You can't make anything better by simply converting it to another type of signal.

  • Digital Audio Processor on MDD Motherboard?

    Hi,
I have a bare-bones Mirrored Drive Door G4 Power Mac (Case, SuperDrive, Motherboard, Power Supply), and a 667mhz Digital Audio G4 Power Mac. Can I put the processor of the Digital Audio into the MDD, and would there be any benefit to doing so? (at least until I can get something else to put in there).
Any advice would be appreciated, I haven't began to play with these yet, and wanted some opinions first.
    Thanks,
    Keith

    Hi-
    No, you can't.
Get yourself a MDD processor. That's all that'll work.

I Bought a digital audio 533 and 2 120G Seagate harddisks. Installing macosx is no problem but when i reboot and going to update the mac the mac will hang en it forced me to reboot the mac. But then the **** begins i get every time aan kernel panic, its nog about the memory is al certifid apple ram so thats not the problem, when i boot from the dvd and run the disk utillity, it says that the keys on the disk are wrong and its inpossible tot fix it. So i runb the install again, first format the disk again, and instal macosx 10.4 but i get the same every time. Someone a idea? Maybe firmware?

Powermac G4 Digital audio   Mac OS X (10.4)

    Hi, profclimber!
For successful installation of OS X 10.2 or later, your Mac must have firmware updated to version 4.2.8. To check for this, boot to open firmware (depress and hold cmdoption+of at startup). When the command line screen appears, the firmware version will appear on the top line of the screen. To exit open firmware afterwards, simply power down with the power button, or enter "mac-boot" at the screen prompt, followed by pressing the Return key, which will restart the Mac. If the firmware is not up-to-date, go here for the installation instructions and download. Please note that if a firmware update is necessary, it must be installed using OS 9.1 (or a version of OS 9 later than OS 9.1 which has been installed on a drive in the Mac, versus being run directly from a disc or run over a network, etc).
In order to successfully install Tiger, you should be using a (black) retail install disc. (Gray) OEM discs shipped with a different model computer will very likely cause problems.
Before installing Tiger, use Disk Utility's Erase option to reformat the startup drive drive using the Mac OS Extended format. In that window, you'll see a button named "Security Options...". Click on it and check the box to overwrite zeros to the drive. Overwriting zeros will take some time, but will insure that your hard drive is clean of any old data artifacts which could possibly interfere with your install. It will also map out any bad sectors which may on the drive, preventing possible data corruption when you do the fresh install of Tiger.
I'd recommend disconnecting any third-party peripheral devices you may have attached when doing the install. When your installation is complete, you might launch Disk Utility and Run Repair Permissions on the startup volume before running Software Update. Do the same before any subsequent runs of Software Update and run it once more after your system software is completely updated.

  • Digital audio ouput - why no volume control??

This is a problem that has been around for a while (ie. pre-Leopard).
Why is there *no global volume control* when using digital audio output? This includes the inability to mute the output as well as adjust the volume with either the keyboard or the apple remote.
It is *particularly annoying* with Leopard's Front Row as music is not being played via iTunes anymore so I can't use the iTunes volume control...
Please fix this Apple, it can't be that hard. There is no logical reason for disabling volume control for digital outpu!
    Thanks,
    Paul Martin

    nitramluap wrote:
It IS possible, actually and its omission makes no sense.
Yes, it is possible but it isn't desirable. Here's why:
For any linear digital audio encoding process, the bit depth determines the resolution of the volume levels the format can reproduce. For example, for 16 bit audio there are 65536 possible volume levels between dead silent & the absolute maximum possible level (digital clipping). For 24 bit audio there are about 16.7 million levels.
So let's say that you want to turn down the volume at the digital output. The only way to do this is by throwing away all of those levels louder than the desired volume by scaling the output to what is effectively a lower bit depth. One half as loud means the most significant bit ("MSB") will never be a one; half that loud & the next MSB won't be used, & so on.
At first, this doesn't seem so bad but the problem is the human ear doesn't interpret "one half as loud" as you might think: hearing is logarithmic (which is why we usually use the logarithmic unit "dB" to measure it), so a sound that is 1/2 the intensity of maximum is only slightly quieter to the ear. Depending on the maximum level the digital input device can produce, it could easily be necessary to scale the digital output to one ten thousandth or less of the maximum output just to achieve a comfortable level, & to scale it much smaller still for background music levels.
So, for an effective volume control with a usable range from "very quiet" to "full tilt" you would really be going from "miserably inadequate resolution" to "high quality resolution."
If you want to hear just how miserable sounding the quiet settings would be, & you have any sound editing software that can change digital volume levels of samples, try this:
Select a short sample & reduce it by 40 dB. Save it & then renormalize that saved sample to full scale. Listen to the result & compare it to the original. Not too pleasant, is it?

  • LaCie DVR compatible with Digital Audio?

I'm looking for a FW DVD/CD burner that will be compatible with my G4 Digital Audio, 466 MHz. Requirements for the LaCie d2 DVD FW dual layer with LightScribe state 500 MHz. Will the drive work even though my speed is slightly slower? I would also like to use it with my PowerBook.
Is the Pioneer DVR 111D a better choice? I know the LaCie has the full version of Toast.

    Hi!
Just to add to what japamac has advised-
I have a working Pioneer burner installed in my B&W 400MHz G3 tower (768MB RAM, currently running OS X 10.3.9). I don't have LightScribe, which may (or may not) be why LaCie specifies a 500MHz minimum processor speed.
Frankly, I'm somewhat puzzled about the LaCie tech's remark concerning your system maybe not supporting any DVD writer. That's simply inaccurate. I'm sure that there are plenty of other members here using various brands of DVD burners in Macs that are running slower than 466 MHz. Please know, however, that many software applications (iLife included) have minimum processor speed requirements. Perhaps that is to what the tech was referring, or perhaps it's specific to LightScribe technology...
I use a NEC ND-3550A burner in my QS Mac without issue. However, I tend to agree with japamac about sticking with Pioneer as a choice you won't be disappointed making.
    Gary
ps to japamac: BTW, the Pioneer DVR-112D (18x) is also now available here in the US. Meritline currently has them for $33. I haven't heard much about it here in the US before now.

  • Processor and Graphics query for G4 PowerMac 'Digital Audio'

    Hey all, two questions here...
    Question 1
Ive got ANOTHER new processor and graphics card for my Digital Audio G4. The processor i had in it before was a Sonnet Encore ST/G4 1GHz, ive replaced this with the same make of processor but at 1.4GHz. The processor works fine and the machine runs fine, but it isn't listed properly in the system profilers...
In OS9 it's speed is described as "about 656Mhz" and in OSX its described as 0MHz!
Im not too worried since everything seems to be working fine, but i want to be sure that its not going to suddenly blow up on me, and if anyone else has had things like this happen with these processors or configurations. Ive still got the 1GHz should anything go wrong, but newer, more powerful stuff is always good!
    Question 2
The new graphics card i put in is a ATI Radeon 9600 Pro PC & Mac Edition. Ive read a few things on the internet about it sometimes not working with DA Power Macs but thought id chance it anyway, i can always sell it on if it didn't work...
Well the card works in both OS9 and OSX and displays everything fine, its recognised by both systems and everything. The only problem is i can't change the display settings, on both systems the only display option ive got is x736 (or whatever it is thats closest to it), there are no other options available, i can't choose anything else in the Recommended menu, not can i change from Thousands to Millions of colours.
Of course its generally agreed that these cards work better on G5s than G4s, despite it saying on the box that it supports G4s. Ive also downloaded the ATI Displays Control Panel to see if i can control it that way, but to no avail. Does anyone have any info or words of advice on this?
    Cheers all!

    Good to hear, thanks!
Do follow the advice to add as much cooling as you can, & use the best Ceramique Thermal Paste you can find.
Did you clear all the Caches yet?
At this point I think you should get Applejack...
    http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/15667/applejack
After installing, reboot holding down CMD+s, (+s), then when the DOS like prompt shows, type in...
    applejack AUTO
Then let it do all 6 of it's things.
At least it'll eliminate some questions if it doesn't fix it.
The 6 things it does are...
    Correct any Disk problems.
    Repair Permissions.
    Clear out Cache Files.
    Repair/check several plist files.
Dump the VM files for a fresh start.
    Trash old Log files.
First reboot will be slower, sometimes 2 or 3 restarts will be required for full benefit... my guess is files relying upon other files relying upon other files! :-)
Disconnect the USB cable from any Uninterruptible Power Supply so the system doesn't shut down in the middle of the process.
Just sits there occupying very little space & never interfering, unless you need to invoke it in Single User Mode.
Look for the 10.3 version of AppleJack 1.4.3.1 (326 KB) (For Mac Jaguar and Panther), here...

  • Uploading digital audio via camera connector???

I am using a Marantz digital audio recorder for field interviews. It takes a compact flash card, same as a digital camera. I would like to use my 60 Gb iPod Photo as a remote storage: upload the WAV (uncompressed audio) files on my CF card to the iPod, erase the CF card, record more interviews, go home, upload the whole thing to my G5. My Belkin card reader (which works great for photos) doesn't recognize the audio files. Anyone tried the camera connector for this? Any other suggestions? This has got to be possible, no?
    Thanks,
    Nathaniel

Interesting application. Although conceptually the same as backing up photos, I doubt this would work. I've plugged a USB flash drive ("thumbdrive") into my camera connector; the iPod Photo recognized the drive, but reported that it has 0 photos on it and so wouldn't allow any import. The drive has many files on it, but none in the format/directories that a digital camera would place them. Of course, you could always use a PowerBook to copy the files from the CF card with a USB reader, but then you wouldn't need the iPod at all and would have to carry more equipment with you. I doubt that Apple would add general file backup functionality to the iPod software for such a purpose. You could always use the feedback page ( www.apple.com/feedback ) to request such an enhancement, but you won't get a response and I doubt they'd implement it as the camera connector is marketed just for the purpose of uploading and viewing photos.
