G4 display behaving oddly.....

The display on my 933 ghz G4 is playing up, the machine turns on, the screen immediately turns white then a black ink stain effect takes over, until the screen turns black. I used Target mode to boot the hard drive into my G3, that worked ok, so the question is, is the display dead, or maybe just a cable ?
Thanks in advance....

diagnosed as a dead logic board, oh well

  • Trackpad behaves oddly when firewire is used

All of a sudden my trackpad start to behave oddly when I have a firewire device connected. Specifically a MOTU Ultralite mk3 hybrid paired with a MOTU ultralite mk3 firewire. The problem started yesterday when I launch Logic Pro X. a minutes after the trackpad starts to be unresponsive and the pointer moving in wrong direction or jumping.
I tried to reset the PRAM with no luck. Even worst, when I tried to boot the macbook pro after rebooting the system freezes on the logo screen when the firewire port is used with that device. when I disconnect the firewire port the problem totally goes away.

Perhaps it is now time for the Harpoon solution (aka the Guinness solution in the mid and far west)
for those not in the know:
    1. turn everything off.
    2. unplug firewire cables
    3. unplug power cords
    4. get up from well worn chair
    5. walk to refrigerator
    6. open refrigerator
    7. remove bottle of Harpoon (Guinness, local micro brew, etc)
    8. pop cap
    9. pour into glass ( you AREN'T going to drink it from a bottle, are you?)
    10. sip responsibly. enjoy the moment. think pure thoughts
    11. return to kitchen. If less than 15 minutes has elapsed, have another. Otherwise, retrurn to edit room.
    12. Plug everything back together
    12. fire up external monitors, VTR, external hard drives & computer in that order.
Does it work now? If yes, congratulate your self. If not, oh well, but at least you are in a much better frame of mind to begin some serious troubleshooting.

  • OS 10.3.9 Running slowly and behaving oddly

My system has been behaving oddly recently. In every application and category therefof. Pages load very slowly, then normally. Sometimes they won't load at all, can't find the server, then they load immediately a few moments later. Various applications will come up very slowly, then, at other times, come up quickly. I have tried turning it off, waiting, then turning it back on. No help. Although my disc space that needs reclaiming seems to have increased exponentially since I first began using the mac two years + or - ago. I have all the updates, security and otherwise, installed. I am wondering if I am infected with avirus of some sort, spyware, whatever.
What is a good spyware, etc. anti-virus application/software for mac that doesn't completely clog it up?

  • Is your Mail behaving oddly?

    Hi there,
I have a .Mac account. I have the following weird behaviours:
    1) When I read something, the email is not being marked as unread.
    2) Sometimes I can't delete what I have just read.
    3) it exaggerates the number of emails that are supposed to be in my inbox. (e.g. at the moment I am supposed to have 13 in my inbox, but I can only count seven).
    4) Now it won't show what is supposed to be in my Inbox (but is not saying that the application is not responding).
    5) I also appear to have gained a new .Mac account. which I want to get rid of but don't know how.
    Er, any thoughts?
    All the best and thanks,

Mail.app is behaving oddly rather suddenly for me, too. But just like the other person I'm not having a problem similar to the one you describe. Instead the issue I have is an ability to quit the software. The only way to quit this app right now is to shutdown my computer. Otherwise, if you try quitting you get into a loop. The app appears to quit, but then after seeming to have quit for a few seconds, it opens itself again and the loop continues. No other problems have accompanied this. I've done no upgrades that might have lead to this.

  • Why is my MacBook display behaving strangely?

I am using an alumin(i)um MacBook (13", late 2008 model with multi-function glass trackpad). In the past couple of weeks, the display has started to behave strangely. The screen seems to freeze (meaning any mouse movements or keystrokes do not display), and then the screen begins to fade to grey. It seems to be resolved by tilting the display until the MacBook "wakes". There has also been some occasional flickering of the display, although far less frequent. Could someone help me with this? Is it something like a loose connection, and, if so, how should I deal with it? (The MacBook is now out of warranty, so my next step would be my local Apple store). Thanks in advance!

Same thing happening to me - began about four weeks ago, two weeks after warranty expired. Has gotten to the point where it's difficult to use the computer - don't get through composing an e-mail before it starts to fade - now know that even though computer display is frozen, the keystrokes are still getting through, so be careful what keys you press trying to get it to pay attention!
I believe it's going to turn out to be a connection problem between the computer and the display in the hinge area. I found out yesterday that as it freezes, and I start to pick it up off my lap and put it aside, if I pick it up with my left hand near the lower left of the keyboard and my right hand behind the display, down low near then hinge, and pulling slightly towards me, this fixes it (for a while), and this is (for me) the most reliable way to wake it back up. I've seen references elsewhere to this being a simple problem where a connection is maintained with a black foam pad to provide pressure to the connection. I think the foam must degrade or lose resiliency (apparently at 12.5 months from purchase!) and there may be a simple solution available. When I figure it out for this particular model, I'll post my conclusions.

  • Horizontal scrollbars behaving oddly

This is not a complete show-stopping bug but Logic Express (9) recently started having issues with horizontal scrollbars -- they center themselves. Occasionally they work as they are supposed to, but most of the time they immediately return to the center, which is really irritating after a while. I'll be scrolled all the way to the end of the timeline for example, and I decide I want to scroll back left slightly; I click on the scrollbar and any kind of drag makes it jump back to the center. It acts like the mouse cursor was there, too.
Reinstallation and trashing preferences did not fix the problem.

Same problem here, but it seems also related to the screen in use, at least in my setup. I'm running Logic on my MacBook with a native screen resolution of 1200x800. I have a second screen attached above it with a resolution of 1920x1080 which I use for the main Arranger screen, the MacBook screen itself is mainly used for displaying the mixer and AU's.
When the arranger screen is on my larger display the horizontal scrollbar is flying all over the place when I try to move it, but when I have the arranger window on my MacBook's screen it behaves normally. Seems like if Logic gets confused by the different widths of the screens, like if it is behaving to have 1200 pixels to scroll on while there are 1920.
Whatever happens, it's kind of annoying...

  • IPhone 6plus behaved oddly

    Hey all,
I just brought my iPhone 6plus 64gb 3 days ago and today was the first time I let the battery run very low. It went down to about 3% and then switched off like any normal iphone would do. After about 2 minutes, I tried pressing the power button and the phone turned on and showed battery level to be 2%. Then it switched off again and turned on one last time after I tried pressing the the power button. The battery level was again 2%. The last time it switched off, it just went blank. I mean iPhone's are suppose to show 'connect to charger' symbol yeah after you press the power button once the phone dies? It didn't. What I noticed was when I pressed the power button, the screen just glowed up slightly(while still black) as if it was the backlight of the screeb slightly lighting up but it didn't display anything else other than black screen. I tried pressing the power button several times but same thing occurred. Then I connected it to my charger and it showed the 'plugged in symbol' while phone has died for about a minute and started to boot up and showed 2% battery and charging. Any idea of this odd behavior? Any help will be appreciated. Thanks

    Nate607X wrote:
All iPhones and ipads show this on their display if your hold the power button once the device runs out of battery. My iPhone didn't show this screen at all. That's what I'm asking. Why didn't it?
Because you kept forcing it on and off over and over again, which uses more power than the iPhone normally would, so it got drained past the 'dead battery screen' part.  The process of starting up a device uses more power than simply running the device.  It's like a car; you use up a lot of gas when starting the engine compared to letting it run at idle for a few minutes.
If your iPhone booted back up after you let it charge for a while, then what, exactly, is your problem?

  • Mac mini 09 Display Resolutions odd via DVI -- HDMI

Hi I've got a LG 1366x768 commercial display and it works great with an Apple TV, MacBook 2007 or MacBook Pro 2008.
However when I unplug the MacBook and plug in the New Mac mini, it gives a completely different set of resolutions - none of which work properly on the display.
When overscan is chosen on the Mac mini, it chops off the top of the menu bar. Overscan is on the MacBook and MacBook Pro and it looks perfect.
Everything is blurry no matter which resolution I choose on the Mac mini. Everything is crisp with the MacBook and MacBook Pro. This is a serious problem....
Tried switchresX and it's no help.
Anyone else using one for their home theatre with a HDMI setup?

Which LG model is it? Which HDMI jack (HDMI1, HDMI2) on the TV are you plugged into?
Some LG commercial TVs have a different internal mode for the inputs that has to be changed in the TV menu. If it thinks it is a true HDMI signal, it will automatically overscan it for you resulting in things being cut off and looking fuzzy. You have to convince it that you really want to be a PC type input that just happens to be over HDMI in order for it to display on all visible pixels. Depending on the model, you may have to plug into a specific HDMI port to even make that possible.

  • Firefox behaves oddly when closing a tab

Recently, when I close a tab, instead of showing the tab immediately to the right, sometimes Firefox will show the tab two to the right for less than half a second, then switch to the one to the left (the one that it should display in the first place). I haven't been able to figure out a pattern to the tabs or pages that this happens on. Only the page is displayed, the actual tab switches to the proper one right away. Here's an example if I'm unclear: I have tabs 1, 2, and 3, in that order. I close tab 1, then tab 2 flashes on the page briefly, and then it goes to tab 2 as it should.
    == This happened ==
    Every time Firefox opened
== Within the last week, no new addons or updates

I often have multiple tabs loaded from an RSS feed. Often but not always, I close tab1, tab1 closes, tab2 becomes the current tab, the CONTENT of tab 3 displays, then the content of tab 2 displays. The time delay is variable & also depends on how many tabs have been loaded. One site that usually shows this symptom is makeuseof.com.

  • IBook behaving oddly

A friend asked me to help with his failing iBook, a 12" 800MHz with 128Mb and an addition 256 ram chip. It's running 10.4.+ When it's picked up the screen breaks up and, disappears and generally displays a mass of vertical broken lines. My initial reaction was that it is a hard disk failure so I brought it into the office today to pop in a replacement. However, I firstly took out the 256 ram and thought that I try it without that first. All was well for an hour. I was able to run disk utility, repair disk etc. Then I saw that it was asking to update Safari so I let it only to find that 7/8ths through, it hung. Having rebooted it seems fine on the desk but to move it causes screen chaos. Now one of the most important tips here is that John pointed out that the date had defaulted to something like 01/01/1999. Having reset it last week, I noticed today, we were back in 1999. This indicates to me that the system battery is failing fast. Can this be replaced and if so, where is it? I have to say this iBook hasn't seen much action and visually it's like new. Before I reach for the spanners, has anyone experienced this before and can throw some light on the subject? Thanks, Barry

    Hey Barry,
When it's picked up the screen breaks up and, disappears and generally displays a mass of vertical broken lines.
That's a classic graphics processor unit (GPU) problem. In the G3 it sits on the bottom under a square bump on the lower shield. You can put a shim in there to assure good contact.
A permanent fix would be to pull the logic board and send it out for reballing of the GPU. $79 at Superior in IL.
Having rebooted it seems fine on the desk but to move it causes screen chaos.
Right there's like 250 tiny "balls" of solder that hold that chip to the logic board they come loose due to board flexing. I feel this is exacerbated due to the hinges getting stiff.
Now one of the most important tips here is that John pointed out that the date had defaulted to something like 01/01/1999. Having reset it last week, I noticed today, we were back in 1999. There isn't a PRAM battery in the iBook. This function is done by a super capacitor ( .22 Farads @ 5.5 V ) I have seen these fail in old iBooks.
    They look like this:
    http://site.mcminone.com/product/31-0750
but instead of end fed they're top and bottom w/ the top lead bent over to the opposite end.
These will only hold settings for 30 seconds or so. Long enough to change the battery. So if that's gone a small transient would cause the PMU to lose settings.
That would have nothing to do with the video problems you see however.

  • Rotating thru Safari windows with Command-` behaves oddly in v.5.0. Why?

If one has several Safari windows open at once, one can one-by-one "flip through" them by pressing Command-` (backward-accent/tilde), in turn bringing each new window to the front.
In earlier versions of Safari, Command-` behaves in a very predictable and useful way -- it rotated through all the windows unidirectionally if you keep pressing. So, for example, if you had 7 windows open at once, and kept pressing Command-`, you would first see page 1, then page 2, then page 3, etc., up through page 7, and from page 7 then you would keep going "forward" to page 1 again. The windows would go in a cycle. +This would remain constant even if you closed windows once you arrived at them.+
That's the way it always has been (in my memory), and the way I like it.
HOWEVER, I now have Safari 5.0 with 10.6.4, and it behaves differently! And not at all to my liking.
Instead of rotating through all the windows in order, Command-` now "bounces" back and forth in its direction if you perform any action to any window.
So, for example, now if you have 7 pages open, and want to rotate through them all to see what they are, and if unwanted, close them, the following strange and ANNOYING behavior happens as you repeatedly press "Command-`":
If you're on page 1, you then go to page 2, then page 3 -- and then if you close page 3, and press Command-` again, you DON'T go to page 4, but rather back to page 2 again, then page 1, then page 7 -- and if you close page 7, you then bounce back to page 1, page 2, etc.
This also happens if you do ANY action to the top page -- move its location, enter text in a field, close it, whatever.
Why does Safari do this now? It's totally counter-intuitive and incredibly bothersome, because it's no longer a simple task to flip through all open windows and close the unnecessary ones. Instead, one constantly is bouncing backwards and forwards like one is in a rubber room. And I end up feeling like I'm in a rubber room.
Has anyone else noticed this new manner of Safari behavior? And if so (and most importantly): *Is there any way to change it back to the way it used to be?*
This is important to me because I dislike using tabs and I often have several windows open for a project, which I then often want to (mostly) close and start a new project, etc. I takes way too much time and confusion simply trying to see all open windows with the new behavior.

I am running 10.6.4. It's just that when I fist updated it (on the first day it was available), Apple had not yet added 10.6.4 to the Forum settings. But now it's there and I have updated it in my profile.
Before I do any of your suggested fixes, I would need to know that the behavior my Safari is exhibiting is abnormal. Because I think that nothing is "wrong" with my Safari -- I think this new behavior is built-in and it is the way it's supposed to be. So that all the fixes in the world won't change anything.
So, what I'd really like to see is a report from someone --anyone -- that Safari 5.0 behaves the same way for them, or differently for them.
I just did a test myself and it took exactly one minute. Can someone do it for me and report back?
    Here's the simple test:
"Minimize" all your existing Safari windows to get them out of the way.
Open a new window, for example, a Google home page. Type in the number "1" in a text field.
Open a second Google (or whatever) page, type in a "2" in a text field.
Do this all the way up to 7 open pages.
Then start hitting "Command-`." If you just hit Command-` repeatedly and do nothing else, you will indeed rotate through the windows like so: 7-6-5-4-3-2-1-7-6-5-4-3.....etc.
NOW HERE'S THE TEST. In the middle of this cycle, close window #4. What happens next to you? In the "old" Safari, you'd keep cycling backwards through the windows 3-2-1-7-6-5-3-2-1-7...etc.
But in Safari 5.0, this what happens to me: After closing window #4, I "bounce back" and now I'm heading in the opposite direction, so that after closing the window #4 it goes 5-6-7-1-2-3-5-6-7-1...etc.
Continue the test by now closing window #6 when you get back to it. Once again, you will "bounce" backwards. So that you will be going 1-2-3-5-6-[close window 6]-5-3-2-1-7-5-3...etc.!
Tell me: is that how Safari behaves for you? (Or anyone reading this?) If so, then my Safari isn't "broken," it's behaving exactly as it is designed to be behaving.
So if that is the case (which I suspect), then my question is not how to "fix" Safari, because fixing it won't alter the behavior, but rather: Are there are settings that can be changed or keyboard shortcuts altered or whatever that can restore the "old Safari" way of behaving?

  • Apple 23" Cinema Display - very odd behavior, please help.

After being away for the weekend I powered up my G5 and was horrified to find that the monitor was not powering up. After searching through the Apple support website on another computer, I unplugged everything that was plugged into the back of the monitor, and I also unplugged the USB and firewire cables going from the monitor to the G5. And guess what? The monitor came on! When I tried powering down, plugging everything back in again, and powering up, the monitor once again would not power up.
What gives? I didn't make any changes to any of the settings before I left for the weekend. And what's even weirder is that the LED light goes off when the monitor comes on and then comes back on when I shut everything down.
Do I have some bad cables or something?

    Hi-
I can suggest trying your troubleshooting one more time, only this time, attach your external connections one at a time, testing with each new connection. If one of the peripheral connections is the culprit, you should find it in this manner.
Consider the possibility that a connection was jiggled loose in the reattachment process........Check that the power brick connection is secure.
USB and Firewire are hot swappable, so, powering down should not be necessary to make the connections.
The LED shutting off during display operation is normal. The LED acts as a stand by indicator, and also flashes error codes when trouble is detected within.
