Hi All
I ahve a eMac G4 700MHz with combo drive and I'm trying to put OSX v 10.4 on to it but the combo drive will not read the disc. I can put a DVD (film)in and watch that and it will also play CD's.
On trying to get the drive rto read the disc, the system hangs and I get this message on the screen:

iMac 17inch Duo 2GHZ   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   Have got an eMac G4 as well

Hi All
Still got the problem. I don't think its the drive,
because it plays DVD's CD's etc, even the disc's from
the Mac magazines. The DVD seems clean. I've run a
disc cleaner in the drive. Still no joy.
I can start the eMac up and it will boot up OK - OS X
10.2.8 The drive will read the DVD, as I can see the
'Max OS X Install DVD' window open up with the
install icon in the centre of the screen.
What about copying the DVD on to en external drive
and the trying to install from that. Would it work??
Thnks for your help, so far.

Hi Lee
Had exactly the same when attempting to update eMac to 10.4, very interesting.
Had to use a faster drive, as the one in my eMac was reading the 10.4 dvd too slowly.
Nothing wrong with disc, nor drive except it was too slow.
if you have a hard drive in bootable firewire external box and copying disc across to it doesnt work, (probably wont) then try borrowing a 2005 era or later dvd drive and using that in the external box.
For the purposes of the excersize, it wont matter if the dvd drive is not supported for burning (least mine isnt) so dont let that put you off having a go.
If all else fails, talk to Apple to see what their techs can do. (Apparently there is a service which supplies 10.4 on CD Rom. And they might be able to load from the DVD for you. They can put in a faster drive. Dont know about the price of that.

I am currently trying to install Windows 8.1 on my iMac using Boot Camp Assistant.  I bought the software and I am falling the directions to a t, but when I insert the disc, my Mac just makes a few noises and spits it out. I know it will read cd's because i grabbed one to try it. I am not sure and I need this for school. Please help me out!!!

  • EMac ejects CDs, will not read them

    Hello!
I have an eMac that, it seems whatever I do, will not read discs. The disk I am working with is a Leopard install disc/DVD, but it is not the only one that does this problem. It appears to spin for a few seconds in the CD/DVD drive, then ejects it. I have tried getting it to work in Safe Mode, resetting the PRAM, and currently I am attempting to clean the drive using a compressed air duster.
My eMac, bought from eBay many years ago, is an educational model, with 1 GHz processor, an upgraded 1 GB of RAM (it appears to have originally come with 512 MB, according to the DVD drive door), and the ATI Radeon 9200 Graphics.
Any help would be appreciated! Thank you!

That indeed is a special eMac version sold only to educational institutions. The good news is that it was based on the newer USB 2.0 logic board and, in spite of Apple's outdated specs, can handle up to 2GB RAM and, of course, has USB 2.0. The ATI 9200 video chipset clearly makes it as variant what Apple called a "eMac (USB 2.0)" with the model identifier "PowerMac6,4." The commercial model had a 1.25gHz processor; the 1gHz was used in the edu-model to reduce costs.
The bad news is that, although I cannot find it in the limited specs published for this special model, another cost saving measure Apple had applied in other edu-model Macs was to downgrade the optical drive, so I would not be surprised if yours has a CD or CD-R optical drive. The commercial model typically had a "Combo" drive, capable of read/write with CDs and read-only for DVDs.
The check BDAqua posted will tell you for sure.
Many 1.0 and 1.25ghz USB 2.0 models had a bad logic board problem. The affected units fell in these serial number ranges:
    G8412xxxxxx- G8520xxxxxx
    YM412xxxxxx - YM520xxxxxx
    VM440xxxxxx - VM516xxxxxx
If yours in in one of those ranges but is still working after all these years, it is probably OK.
As for the DVD instal disk, Leopard 10.5 was available on CD on special order. If you are in the US, I'd phone the central Apple Store (1-800-MY-APPLE) and ask for an operating systems specialist. Tell them you bought a DVD retail install disk but need the CD version for the older model Mac. That may still be able to arrange an exchange so you have compatible discs.
If you have a newer Mac with a working DVD-capable drive, you may be able to use FireWire Target Disk Mode to mount the eMac's hard drive on the newer Mac and then put your current install DVD in the new Mac but point the installer to the eMac. I've done that before, but I have piles of Macs from different eras.

MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2014) will not read an SD card in the SDXC card reader. Does anyone know whats going on?

Hi David.  I don't have as modern a Macbook Pro as you, mine is a 2012 model, but perhaps I can help.  I often find that my SD card will not load when I first insert it.  I have to remove it and then put it into the slot again firmly.
You also haven't posted any information about the SD card.  What size is it, do you know how it is formatted, has it worked in that same mac previously, where did it come from, does it currently work in another device (such as your camera)?  This sort of information will help to narrow down the problem.
If you post some more information I'm sure people will try to help you.  In the meantime, if you look at your post again you should see "More Like This" at the bottom of the page and you may find an answer in some of those related posts.
    Hope that helps.

LR 5.6 on Mac desktop all of a sudden will not read any card from any reader but will work on my laptop. I can work on previous images but not import new ones. Even if I create a catalog on laptop and import to my desktop on a thumb drive, the images are only accessible as long as the thumb drive is inserted.

Sounds like you may need to repair the Disk Permissions on your drive where your images are stored.

  • I have downloaded footage from a Sony Z1 on to a hard drive which I've put on to my Mac Book Pro and it will not read in iMovie. Can somebody help me?

I shot three  video clips on a Sony Z1 camera. As I only had the cable to plug it in to my PC, I uploaded the footage on to the PC and then copied it on to my hard drive. I then put the hard drive into my MacBook Pro so that I could continue to edit it on there, however it will not read the files. The audio is WAV and the video footage has come up as M2V files. I need to be able to import it in to iMovie to edit however it is not letting me do so.
Is it because they are M2V's or do I need to upload the footage directly on to the MacBook and not on to a PC first?
If anyone could help, it would be massively appreciated! Thanks in advance!

  • DVD drive will not read DVD-Roms

I recently tried to reinstall a game that I had played previously, only to find that my drive will not read it. I can hear the disk spinning, but my computer will not recognize that there is a disk in the drive. I tried some of my other games and I noticed that all of the older games, that ran on CD-Rom, had no trouble installing, while the ones that ran on DVD-Rom never showed up in the drive.
This is strange because I have installed all of these DVD-Rom games on my laptop before with no problem. I've tried doing simple fixes, like updating everything and uninstalling then reinstalling the drivers, but nothing helps.

    Hi,
If it worked before then try few System Restore points and check. Could have happened due to some update.
Also provide the Product number of your notebook if restore doesnt help.
    Note:
If you have HP Support Assistant installed on the computer(The Blue Question Mark) then open it ==> Complete all pending Updates & Tuneups==> Restart and Check. It may solve your problem
Although I am an HP employee, I am speaking for myself and not for HP.

  • My Mac Mini will not read TDK disks from my iMac G3.

My Mac Mini will not read TDK disks from my iMac G3.
I used an iMac G3 (2001) -- the ones that looked like a big pod -- running on OS X and saved files to TDK  CD-R, 700 MB disks, which worked fine. Now that I have a Mac Mini (model number  A1347) I cannot get this computer to read those disks, made on the iMac G3.  Once inserted each disk will open and I can retrieve files for a short period, then the problems start. The computer makes some noises, the beach-ball/pinwheel goes around and I cannot get the files to open or the disk to eject. After a while the disk does eject -- to my relief. I keep using Control+E until ejection happens.
My Mac Mini (2010-2011) is hooked up to a View Sonic HDMI LED monitor, an iOmega external hard-drive for backing up, an Epson Stylus C88 Plus printer and to the internet by a fibre 10MB feed. The Mac Mini runs on OS X version 10.6.8 Snow Leopard: Processor Speed:2.66 GHz
I took the Mac Mini to an Apple retailer and he hooked the computer up to one of his monitors and it read the TDK disks just fine. I am now using Sony CD-RW, 700 MB disks, but I would prefer to use my TDKs because I have such a large pile of blank ones to use and there are those TDK disks with information that I want to look at from time to time. Can anyone tell me what to do?
    DJG

Try disconnecting everything attached to the Mini except the monitor.
If that doesn't work, try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. If Back-to-My Mac is selected in System Preferences, the Guest account will not work. The intent is to see if it is specific to one account or a system wide problem. This account can be deleted later. If successful, copy the files to the original account Public/Dropbox.
Isolating an issue by using another user account
If the problem is still there, try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account.  Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.

  • I have iphoto '08 version with an imac osx 10.5.8. It will not read my RAW files  from my Nikon D800 - a very new model. How can I get it to read my RAW files?

my somewhat old imac osx 10.5.8 with iphoto '08 will not read my RAW files from my new Nikon D800 camera - a new model on the market( 5 months or so). How can I get iphoto to read my RAW  files?

iPhoto 08 would not read RAW files from that new a camera. You need to upgrade so you can get more up-to-date version of OS X and iPhoto. Another possiblity is see if iPhoto 11 will run on 10.5.8, if so you should update. You can also attempt to run Software Update and see if it finds a newer release of iPhoto 08 that supports newer RAW formats.

  • Itunes will not read the ripped CD

My hard drive crashed. With a new drive,I have now imported all my previously saved music into my Itunes library perfectly. Now, after having ripped a dozen full CD's, the new music has been loaded and can be played, but itunes will not read the titles, artist or the CD title. Only my past music is labeled.

    hi Patricia!
sounds like the new configuration isn't performing Gracenote queries properly. let's try checking through a few of the usual suspects:

The optics might be dirty. Try running a cleaning CD through it and see if that makes a difference.
If not, it will have to be replace.

  • Will not read tiger software

I recently bought tiger to upgrade from panther and my imac will not read the software disk. it may read it once in every ten tries but after having to restart the computer it will not read it. So I have been unable to install it. can anyone help?
    imac g4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

What exactly do you mean by, "will not read the software disk?" Do you mean it won't start up from the DVD? Do you mean you cannot list the files on the DVD?
Does the disc have a black label with large gray "X" or does it have a gray label? The latter is an OEM disc that can only be used with the computer model with which it came. Does the DVD have the word Upgrade printed on the label?
If you are trying to boot from the DVD are you doing it correctly? Insert disc into the optical drive and wait until it mounts on the Desktop. Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the "C" key. Wait for the gray startup screen to appear. Release the key when the spinning gear appears beneath the dark gray Apple logo.

  • Adobe 11 will not read my files.

I have downloaded Adobe 11 several times, with and without the anti-virus set, and though it recognises my files Microsoft reports it had 'encountered a problem and is closing it down' when I try to open them.  When I restore the system to Adobe 9 it opens my old files but, obviously, not those in '11' format.  Any ideas?

Well, it's like this.  Someone sends me some printed  information.  A bill.
A report ,  It downloads.  I try  to open it and it tells me I need Adobe
Reader 11 to do so and gives me a  link.  .  I download from the link.  It
takes an age but in the  end it tells me I have successfully downloaded Adobe
Reader 11. When I try to  open the file Microsoft tells me they have
encountered a problem and are closing  it down.  When I try to open any of my
saved Adobe Reader files I then  get the same message.  I have to use System
Restore to get the facility of  Adobe Reader 9  back.  Then it opens my saved
    files again.

My 24" imac will not read cd's, reads dvd's just fine.

    1) Make sure the CDs are clean and free from scratches.
    2) Go to: Apple > System Preferences > CDs & DVDs and make sure that blank CD: is set to Ask what to do and that music CD: is set to Open iTunes.
