G4 ethernet stops working, system prefs hangs

Hello, I have an old g4 power mac working as a server. O.S. is 10.4.11, connected with ethernet over several switches and a ( new ) router with fixed i.p. addresses. The other computers are intel machines with MAC 10.6 . This configuration has worked fine for years. (of-coarse with the different O.s.ses)
When I start up the g4 it works fine and its disks are accessible by the other computers; but after a few ours the connection disappears. When I try to have a look in systems prefs- network the systems pref hangs itself.??? Can anyone tell me watts going on here?
The things I changed lately are the new router and "snow"
Thanks in advance
Jos.

Yes, ethernet is there, correct I.P. number, and stronger: internet is working!
"configuration kind = " INFORM" for IPv4 " looks strange to me ?

  • Ethernet stopped working at last update

Hard-wired ethernet stopped working after the last update.
    Wireless works.
I have a trendnet wireless router. When the imac is connected via physical ethernet cable, it can actually ping and http to the trendnet and other machine on the same subnet just fine. However, it can't get beyond that. Looked at routing table and it looks fine.
When i take the same imac, connect via wireless to the same trendnet router, everything works.
    Routing table looks identical.
PC's in same line can be hard-wired to the trendnet router and work fine as well.
Checked for more updates and none available.

This is and old problem that as far as I know has not been resolved. You might try a search here to see all the other posts concerning this.
I had a similar problem with my brand-new Mac about a month ago. It worked on my wireless system when I first booted it up and then after I updated it about 20 minutes later, it began to repeatedly drop the Internet connection. After a week of fighting it, I had to switch to Ethernet thus having only my Mac wired while my PCs cruise right along on wireless.
When I first tried the Ethernet hookup, it still dropped a couple of times. It has not done so in the last 2 weeks, knock on wood. However, I am afraid to try wireless again as I may never get Ethernet back. Perhaps, just perhaps, Apple will resolve this in the next update if they even are aware of it.
Sorry for no answer to your problem. I hope someone sooner or later is able to resolve this.

  • Ethernet stopped working suddenly

I've been reading various topics on this board and it seems like many people have this problem but there are not many solutions.
My problem is that my ethernet stopped working suddenly. I've taken the following steps:
    - reset the cable modem
    - reset the router
    - turned off my ethernet card and rebooted the computer then turned it on again; renew DHCP ip
    - create a new location
    Does anyone have any suggestions?

I'm not an expert, but here are a few suggestions & questions:
    • Did you reset things in the order you wrote them in your post i.e. modem before router? (That can be important. Also I find it takes my modem a couple of minutes to establish a connection, so I wait for a while before I turn on the router.)
    • Do you have any other computers wired up? Do they work?
    • Have you tried setting the computer location to Automatic?
    • Does your Modem have LED readouts which indicate when it is connected to the Internet and to a router?

  • Wired ethernet stops working on c2d MBP

I am a new 15 inch C2D MBP owner and I'm just starting to learn all the Mac stuff... I need your help because I have a serious problem with wired ethernet stability under macOS. I need to know if it's something specific to my machine or if anyone else has similar problem.
I am connected to a LAN with a 10/100 Mbit switch. I'm using a good cable (checked!). And my connection seems to hang from time to time. Usually this happens under heavier load (torrent plus multi-tab browsing), but it dies sometimes during casual browsing or checking for system updates. And it's anywhere from 3 minutes to 12 hours between hangs...
The symptoms are strange. The connection seems to be on, but there's a sudden surge in bad packet received number and the network connection stops working remaining on-line. Putting the machine to sleep or manually shutting down the line helps immediately. I'm using:
    sudo ifconfig en0 down
    sudo ifconfig en0 up
At first I suspected hardware problem but the same line works perfectly under Windows (with even higher load, and tcpip.sys patched to 1000 connections).
It acted like this from the very first moment I got it and I have no clue if I should contact service or wait for a patch or maybe just stick to Windows (just kidding)...
I've browsed the forum and it seems I'm not the only one with the problem:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=649927
but this topic is unsolved... There's nothing really strange in system.log:
Dec 15 17:22:45 honsiu kernel[0]: AppleYukon: bad packet received. length: 20, packet status bits: Packet fragment

Any hints appreciated. It's a beautiful machine and I'm so sorry it doesn't work as it should...

    evans_re,
does the trackpad not work? If it works, you could try selecting “Shut Down…” from the Apple menu.
As a last resort, you can hold down the power button for approximately ten seconds, which should force a (non-clean) shutdown.
If your keyboard is completely non-functional (excepting the power button), then you should take it to an Apple store or other qualified service facility.

  • Solaris 10 x86 patching, ethernet stopped working

    Hello,
This morning I ran smpatch download, install in single user mode. Rebooted, and my ethernet has stopped working on elxl0 3com 90XX LAN driver. There does not appear to be any problems in dmesg. Anyone having similar problems?
I have been keeping up-to-date on my patches, this morning I remember seeing a kernel patch, a s4/usr patch. And a couple of others.

Please disregard, it appears there was a recent network change that seems to have affected this system. Thanks.

  • USB Ethernet stop working after hotplug

I have found that my Apple USB Ethernet dongle stop working if I plug in another USB device. This happens both using a USB hub, and when plugging directly into the MacBook Air. I also see this problem when using a similar dongle from another supplier (called AX88x72A). The USB Ethernet dongle works fine after booting, with status "Connected", but if I plug in another device like my phone or a  USB drive, the status changes to "Cable Unplugged" after a few seconds, ifconfig no longer show the en1 interface, and syslog gives a few error lines such as:
    Fri Jan 13 13:17:19 Airbook-II kernel[0] <Debug>: en1
    Fri Jan 13 13:17:19 Airbook-II kernel[0] <Debug>: Ethernet \[AppleUSBEthernet\]: Link down on en1
    Fri Jan 13 13:17:19 Airbook-II kernel[0] <Debug>: AppleUSBEthernet::prepareForFlash - Link down, Device 87bf600
    Fri Jan 13 13:17:19 Airbook-II kernel[0] <Debug>: AppleUSBEthernet::prepareForFlash - Link down, Device 87bf600
After this, I must reboot the MacBook Air to get the dongle working again. Do anybody know how to force the AppleUSBEthernet driver to rescan the device tree (or something similar)?
    With regards,
    Birger Retterstøl Olaisen

I have exactly the same problem here (MacBook Air 2,1 - OSX 10.6.8). After several tries (and reboots!), I've found that an unload/reload of the USB Ethernet driver works.
Note that operation is not automatic: I have to execute commands in a terminal in order to retrieve my Ethernet connection... but it is far better than a reboot!
So, if  you want to test my method, once you have plugged a USB key (or after an hotplug of your USB-ethernet dongle), you can execute these commands on your terminal (note there are 2 lines and no space in the kext name, a space may be inserted by this forum):
    sudo kextunload /System/Library/Extensions/IONetworkingFamily.kext/Contents/PlugIns/AppleUSBEth ernet.kext
    sudo kextload /System/Library/Extensions/IONetworkingFamily.kext/Contents/PlugIns/AppleUSBEth ernet.kext
Of course, i've made a small script with these commands, and copied it on my PATH so it is even easier to execute it. It works perfectly for me, and I hope it could help.
    David.

  • Ethernet stopped working

My ethernet has stopped working, can I get it working again or does it need repair?
I've rebooted the iMac and during boot I can see the router port light shows some activity but then switches off before boot is complete. The ethernet shows as not connected in System Preferences/Network. I have tried changing the ethernet cable. I have tried moving the ethernet cable to another port on the router. I have tried rebooting the router.
    Can anyone offer further ideas?

    Hi,
I have had this problem with my old iMac 24" and now my newer (20 month old) iMac 27".
Have had both these machines to Apple and have been told that the ethernet port is faulty. The only solution is an expensive board replacement.
This appears to be a serious weakness with the iMac, as I know of others with the same problem.
My 4 year old PC (Windows OS) on the same network, does not have a ethernet problem, neither does my Macbook Pro.

  • Both thunderbolt display and ethernet stopped working at the same time

I use recent Macbook pro 13inch retina.  I use both of thunderbolt ports on ethernet and display.
I was messing around with application, and I found chess game. I played it for while than my display and ethernet suddenly stopped working.
I do know ethernet and display is working fine because My roommate still have access to the ethernet, and My xbox still works on my display monitor.
So, I suspected its thunderbolt problem, and I reinstalled Mavericks twice and reseted SMC and NVRAM, which didn't solve anything.
Do you have any suggestion before I take this computer to Apple store?

So the ports still work, and the display still lights up when you use it with your xbox? Are you sure about the xbox part, I didn't think the thunderbolt display worked with an xbox.
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/24060376#24060376
Do you have the LED Cinema display? Look at the back, do you have 3 USB ports or 3 USB ports, firewire and ethernet?

  • [SOLVED] Ethernet stops working after a while

When I work on this computer, the ethernet stops after a while, sometimes this is after 2 minutes, sometimes after half an hour. When I do
    sudo /etc/rc.d/network restart
everything works again for a while. The internet doesn't work in chromium nor pacman so it isn't just one application.
Anyone knows how I can find the cause of this?
    Thanks already!

Also, tell us about your network.  Are you plugged into a corporate or school network? your own private router? into a DSL or Cable modem?
When it stops, what is the output of ip link  ??
    of ip addr  ??
    of ip route  ??
What is the make, model and chipset of your NIC?

  • Desktop and Screen Saver in System Prefs hangs. Why?

I just migrated everything over perfectly from my old intel mac to my new one. when i go to "desktop and screen saver" in the system preferences and try to choose a folder of images for screen saver, sys prefs hangs and i have to force quit. i am trying to choose the same folder i used in my old mac but i have the same problem when trying to chose any folder. is there some "desktop and screen saver" file that could be corrupted that I need to delete? if not, why is it hanging?

I too am having the same problem as the original poster. I tried what was suggested as far as creating a new admin. account and still have the same problem with no iPhoto library showing up and the desktop/screensaver preferences hanging up and finally forcing a quit to close it.
I migrated everything from my old computer to this new one including the system software. It was suggested by someone else to reinstall the system software which I have done also with no change in the problem. (something to do with shared libraries I think????)
    Any more ideas?

  • Backblaze problem made System Prefs hang in Maverick

I am on a Macbook Pro, OS 10.9.1 . I use Backblaze for offsite backups.
I noticed this morning that the Backblaze icon was missing from my main system menu bar, so I went to Spotlight, searched "backblaze," and clicked on what came up. The system began to simultaneously open both a Backblaze app and my System Preferences. Then both hung and became unresponsive, so I had to force quit both of them.
Now the Backblaze icon is back in the system menu bar, but nothing happens when I click it--no menu drops down, etc. Also, I can no longer open System Preferences -- when I choose it in the Apple menu, it bounces for a while, then hangs, and I have to force quit.
I've tried fixing permissions, which didn't help. Anyone have any thoughts? I've also written Backblaze but haven't heard from them yet, and I suspect they will say that a problem with System Prefs is a Mac problem, not theirs.

seems to have fixed itself after a couple of days.

  • Multiple apps & system prefs hanging constantly on Retina

    Hi all,
I've started to have frequent problems on my Retina MBP. The machine is the 2.7 GHz model with 16 GB RAM and 512 GB SSD.
The problem is in almost all cases software freezing either upon launching them or trying to take the first action inside the application. To name some examples:
Chrome will often launch OK, then restore my tabs and hang. Will respond to nothing save for force quit.
System Preferences won't let me switch from the Desktop tab to the Screen Saver tab. When I click the latter it just hangs up. Force quit.
Adobe Premiere Pro will often stop displaying any video, especially if a change focus to another window/desktop. Will take commands and close cleanly, but it's rather useless without video, you know...
Excel 2011 will crash when I try to activate Solver. It will also crash randomly from time to time (no hang-ups so far).
These are 3rd party apps for sure, but the help I need is a little push in the right direction. Where to start debugging? All of these are legit, paid-for programs and I keep them up-to-date. Also, all of them have so far worked very well on this machine. Problems started appearing, I would say, about a week ago. At the moment, I cannot associate any particular updates with any of these with the start of the problems.
Needless to say it's pretty frustrating to have this happen on a supposedly one of the best laptops there is. Especially that I have had no problems with my previous Macs, or with any Apple products for that matter. Things that simply work was the one and only reason I switched over from PC's years ago.
I'd be really thankful for any help on this!
Best regards from cold, rainy Finland,
    Joonas Häkkinen

    Thanks, Clinton!
So here goes. I just started to experience a new kind of a problem. I have a DMG-file on my desktop that we use for moving images and project files around in our little business. I usually leave this file mounted most of the time without problems, including when I close the MBP's lid. I tend not to power it down, though lately have had to because of these problems.
So I opened the already mounted DMG-folder and noticed that none of the JPEGs inside have thumbnails anymore. Just those general icons of a blank paper. I cannot eject the DMG. If I try to mount it again, it seems like it's going OK and I get no errors, but nothing changes. I believe this was logged multiple times in relation to opening that folder:
    6.10.12 7:59:01.124 PM Dock[186]: CGSSetWindowTransformAtPlacement: Failed
    6.10.12 7:59:01.125 PM WindowServer[81]: _CGXSetWindowListMotionBlur: Invalid window 0xe5b
When I copied that bit and pasted it to this Chrome window the following appeared:
6.10.12 7:59:35.170 PM mdworker[2944]: Unable to talk to lsboxd
6.10.12 7:59:35.174 PM mdworker[2943]: Unable to talk to lsboxd
Also, I was copying another folder to my desktop, and now I notice it doesn't even have the folder icon but rather the same blank sheet icon. Upon double-clicking the folder will open but Finder will show no contents for it. However, I watched myself when it was copied and there were no errors. I get this when opening it:
6.10.12 8:01:17.638 PM quicklookd[2953]: [QL] _QLServerGetThumbnail: can't convert path to url
What do you make of this?
