G4 freezes and wont reboot

Hi I've just bought a G4 off ebay - I got it Saturday and tried it for the first time yesterday. It has OSX Leopard operating system newly installed by seller. It started ok but kept freezing i.e. - showing the coloured spinning wheel even when I wasn't working on Ibook taking ages to come back to life eventually it froze completly. So I had to manually turn it off by switch now it won't reboot. you hear the apple gong then it goes to a black screen for about 3mins then it goes to grey screen with little apple logo and the grey spinning wheel it stays like this for about 5 mins or more then it automatically switches to black screen and attempts of its own accord to boot again only to repeat the above.
Can anyone help in simple terms as I'm new to apple's!!
Thanks

This is not good news--it may mean that your hard drive is failing. I don't know if this is something that can be repaired with something like Disk Warrior or not.
There are really quite a few problems with this iBook. It sounds like you may not have gotten the full set of the original CD's. I don't know how many came with it originally. It sounds like you did not get a Leopard disc even though Leopard was said to be installed. It makes me wonder if the Leopard OS was even legally installed. You may have a failing hard drive. And there may be other issues.
Did you buy this iBook as a working computer, or did you know in advance that there were issues with it? Something like the "fatal hardware error" should have been disclosed. Any known problems should have been disclosed, and it sounds like maybe they were not.
At this point, you need to decide if you want to try to fix this iBook or consider returning it to the seller for a refund. If the hard drive cannot be repaired, you will have to replace it. Disk Warrior costs around $100 US. You may also have to purchase a replacement set of the original CD's, and if you want Leopard, probably a Leopard disc. You could call Apple with your serial number and find out how many discs there should be and see whether or not you have all of them and what any replacement discs would cost.
Also, 512MB is a little light for running Leopard--more RAM would be better. I don't know what version of OSX came on this iBook--it could be 10.3 (Panther) or 10.4 (Tiger). It should say on the install discs assuming they are the right ones for this machine. This machine should run Tiger with no problems. But it would probably be most cost effective to get the iBook running on whatever its original OS is and then decide whether to upgrade.
To get the CD out of the drive, try starting up and holding down the mouse key when you hear the start up chime. It should just pop out.
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but as a newcomer to Apple, you deserve to have a working machine that you can enjoy. This is not what you have at the moment. Think it over, and if you want to go ahead with trying to get this iBook to work, please post back. But it may make more sense to return this one and get a refund and then buy a different machine.
Good luck!

  • HT3798 Ipod classic, 120gb randomly freezes and/or reboots. Is this hardware or software issue?

My wife told me the other day that she was having an issue with her ipod which was happening at an increasing rate. While listening to an audio book or music it will randomly stop/freeze, and times the Ipod will reboot. Of course, when listening to a 6 hour audio book and losing your place when this happens can be frustrating. It's about 4 years old and I was thinking that maybe it was the drive inside, but not sure.
    Thanks in advance,

  • Imac intel core duo (2008) crashed and wont reboot after Mountain Lion upgrade

    Hi can anyone help?
Hi, my imac was loaded with Snow Leopard and I upgraded to Mountain Lion a few days ago and today when I got back from leaving it a few hours the screen went funny!!! (see pic) and it wont reboot. The same screen appears straight away when restarting. I have tried holding down the shift for safe start but it didnt work and also a nv/ram pram reset (but only heard one 'mac sound')
I have my old snow leopard disk..............somewhere!!! but I'm not sure if I can boot from them if I have just upgraded to Mountain Lion via the app store download??
I didnt do a boot disk! (yes I know) or a back up (yep again...I know!) so if anyone has any ideas on how to help :-) I'd be very grateful!!
    Thanks Melanie
PS is the problem called a Kernel Panic????

I'm afraid my next piece of advice you won't like. I think you need to erase the drive and reinstall Mountain Lion from scratch.
Install or Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Erase the hard drive:
      1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
      2. After DU loads select your startup volume (usually Macintosh HD) from the left side list. Click on
the Erase tab in the DU main window.
      3. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Optionally, click on the Security button and set the Zero
Data option to one-pass. Click on the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
      4. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Install button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • Treo 755P from TELUS freezes and/or reboots when using bluetooth headset

My treo 755P has worked fine for almost a year. I recently purchased a Motorola H870 headset.  Since then the phone freezes up and/or reboots several times a day. Sometimes when I am dialing and sometimes apparently randomly.  I have worked with my provider, TELUS, but have no resolution. I am using the latest Palm desktop software and I have tried a hard reset on the phone.  Any other ideas??
    Thanks.
    Jason
Post relates to: Treo 755p (Sprint)

Hi..  Welcome to the Palm forums.  Lets put things in order here:
1- got 755p and worked fine for almost a year
2- purchased Motorola H870 and 755p starts freezing.
Bottom line here is that you 755p worked find until the H870 was introduced.  This headset is not on Palms bluetooth compatibility list.  For the list see this link:   http://kb.palm.com/SRVS/nua/launchKB.asp?c=44829 .
I would recommend that you do a hard reset and do not sync or use the H870 for atleast 24hrs.  If the 755p works fine that will confirm the H870 is the problem.  If your still having the problem then you will need to look at a repair/replacment.

    Hello.
I have a quite big problem with mg Macbook pro. Its a 2010 mid, 15 inch. I have a normal harddisk, and not a SSD. The problem is that, about once an hour, all my programs/desktop freezes, and only the Mouse is working. And, either it Will turn of and shut Down, and boot with The Grey map with a White question Mark, or The Apple and The loading bar and load forever. Will a New disk Work out?
    Thanks for your help.
Ny exams Are soon, so really need help!

Possibly it's the hard drive or hard drive cable.
Unfortunately is could also be this:
computer crash, restarts - mountain lion.
    Where Linc says:
"Unfortunately, you have the MacBookPro6,2, the Edsel of Macs."
There was a recall on this model that has unfortunately ended.

  • Apps freeze and wont restart w/o a hard reboot

    Model Name: iMac
    Model Identifier: iMac7,1
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
    Processor Speed: 2.4 GHz
    Number Of Processors: 1
    Total Number Of Cores: 2
    L2 Cache: 4 MB
    Memory: 4 GB
    Here is the problem:
I close an app like Dreamweaver or Excel
The app stays in the dock as if it is still running (with the light on)
Doesn't show in the activity monitor but show up in ps aux with a pid
I have run sudo kill -9 <PID> and nothing happens
I have logged on and back in to my account and nothing happens
And the app wont start back up.
The only way to fix it is to reboot.
And sometime i have to power cycle because it wont respond to the restart command.
Anyone else having this issue and more important is there a fix?
    Jason

I guess Leopard's "full conformance with Unix" makes file permissions so much more important that previous versions of MacOSX. It's a housekeeping and security requirement that has existed on servers for years.
Software developers, including Microsoft, are still getting used to having to consider this during installation and upgrades. Existing programs that ran well under Tiger may still work on Leopard when the permissions are repaired, but a lot of people that upgrade from Tiger have probably brought files into Leopard that were not repaired before the upgrade and blame the upgrade itself.
Repairing Permissions takes a lot longer to do than it does with Tiger. Some say it's because Disk Utility is working harder to do more repairs.
Still, it's not the only reason there are problems, it's just the first thing I check... and it's Free and never seems to cause any new problems to "appear".

  • Help with ibook G4, Freezing and wont turn on :-(

Can anyone help a fellow MacLady?
I have an ibook G4, her her a year with no problems,
2 days ago cursor froze, and I turned off and restarted and am left with a blank screen.
Every now and then it starts up, all my documents are there, connects to to wireless ok, and last for anything from 5mins to 1hr. Then freezes again.
Took it to a local PC man who looked and said he doenst really know apples but guessed it was Hard Drive.
Have no lost NO information from the PC, its all backed up now thankfully as I do occassionaly get access to it, though all my 876 entourage emails have strangely dissapeard. Aghhhhhhhhhhhhhh
Have an appointment with a "Genius" in Bluewater on Wednesday (earliest they can see me), but just wondered if anyone knew what the problem might be and how much I am maybe looking at for a repair? As the PC man told me to buy a new one as this will cost hundreds.
I work from home so not been able to print or do hardly anything so am running out of time
Thanks for any help, the PC is here next to me (am on my old Win one, blergh) so if anyone can help or give advice I would really appreciate it,
Thanks for any help in advance.

Hi LadyMacB and welcome to Apple Discussions.
First of all see if you can start up inSafe Mode.
Safe Boot takes longer than normal startup.
What is Safe Boot, Safe Mode.
If you are able to start up in Safe Mode and reboot into normal mode this may, in itself, be enough. If not restart in Safe Mode, if you are able, & put your OS X install disk in and restart holding the C key until you see the spinning gear wheel. When you get to the Language screen select your language and select 'Next'.
At the top of the screen towards the left in the menu bar select Utilities>Disk Utility. Select the Drive name at the very top, then look at the report at the bottom of the window. Amongst everything else you will, hopefully, see S.M.A.R.T. status 'Verified'.
If it says 'Failing' then your PC bloke is spot on. Be grateful that you were able to get everything backed up. Otherwise proceed…
Select your OS volume 2nd down in the left hand box, then click the 'Repair Disk' button. Leave Disk Repair to run, If it reports that repairs were made select 'Repair Disk' again until you get the message that the Volume appears to be OK. If DU reports at any time that it could not repair then third party utilities may be necessary or, irrespective of the S.M.A.R.T. status report, your HD may be shot. Try the above for starters and report back.
    Best of luck,
    Adrian

  • My ipod kept freezing and wont turn on, only displays black screen?

My ipod touch 4th generation started to freeze randomly yesterday, i have tried holding the sleep/wake button and the home button to reset it which works but then when i type in my passcode it freezes again. I have tried to restore it through itunes but all of a sudden my ipod won't turn on now and i have left it in charge for 2 hours but still nothing. I have recently updated all my apps from the app store and it has ios 6.1.5 on it and has been working fine for last two days after i have recently has the dock connector replaced. It was charging before when it kept freezing but now it wont even turn on any idea??

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode
How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try another cable
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and then take it back to where yo had the dock connector replaced. Apple will not help.

  • Freeze and random reboot. HELP!

I'm going to try to keep this short as it is a long story.
Recently I reformatted my hard drive and installed Windows XP Professional. After the installation I realized that I do not have the drivers for some of the hardware. I installed all latest drivers off their webpages but only one problem. Now the computer randomly freezes (more likely to freeze if IE or Mozilla is opened) and sometimes on rare occasion will reboot itself. I've searched and checked everywhere and found only little information. Possibly the video cards driver is too new or too old, P/S, general driver defaults, etc, etc. With the help of SIW I found that the P/S and temperatures are all normal, so that can be rulled out. My questions are; Has anyone had this type of problem or know how it can be resolved? And also, could it be possible for my RAM cards to be at fault for the freezing or rebooting?
    Here is my setup:
    Asus Desktop
    AMD Athlon 62 3200+ Processor
    MSI K8N Neo MS-7030 VER. 1 Mainboard
ATI Radeon 9550 Series AGP 256M Video Card
again... O/S is Windows XP Pro

Hang in there, these problems can be very hard to diagnose.  Trust me, I know.  I'm having some very similar ones.
Disable automatic reboot in System Properties\Advanced\Performance\Advanced.  This allows you to see the BlueScreen information before you manually reboot.
Try uninstalling all the drivers you recently installed.  Install different versions of the drivers, either older or newer, one at a time.  Test things thoroughly in between.  Try to document exactly what you were doing and what was loaded when you have the failure.  If you get a Blue Screen, write down all the information.
    Post back.

  • Macbook freezes and then reboots

Hello, my macbook (mid 2012) has been freezing about once a day since I got yosemite.  It freezes for about 1 minute, and then it reboots on its own.  When it boots back up it reopens everything I had open.  I don't know how useful the console messages are in figuring out what's going on but I know its says something about what's going on.
Every time this happens, i've gone to the console and Ive noticed all the console messages from about 10 minutes before hand and leading up to the freezing are missing.  Also the latest message before the missing messages are always "kernel[0]: AirPort: RSN handshake complete on en1".
For example it just happened again now, at 10:07:09. The console is:
    2014-11-01 10:00:29.000 PM kernel[0]: en1::IO80211Interface::postMessage bssid changed
2014-11-01 10:00:29.000 PM kernel[0]: AirPort: RSN handshake complete on en1            //last message, and then for 7 minutes nothing\
//somewhere in here, at 10:07 PM my computer freezes.  then it proceeds to reboot

  • TouchSmart F450z - Freezes and spontaneous reboots...

I have ran full diags on the hardware and all came back clean.  I have restore, refreshed, reloaded... skimmed down the system to just the basics... and still periodically it just freezes up.  Usually it in a browser... but not necessarily every time.  I testing now to see if it is related to the computer going into sleep mode but turning off all power management.
Anybody else with this model having problems.  I have the optional CPU in this one (A8-6600 I think) and the optional network/bluetooth... also the memory as it came was 8gb.
Just curious if it's only me out here with issues.  I hate the concept of sending back a computer that I just go to get it fixed.
Oh yeah swapped out memory and even upgraded to 16gb.. still does it now and then.
