G4 Freezes on Idle

I just recently put OS 10.4.7 on my powerpc and it seems to freeze whenever it has been idle for a few minutes. It wasn't acting this way previously, but then again I had made some other enhancements to the computer as well. First, I added a switch so that my pc and my mac can share a monitor, keyboard and mouse. I upgraded to 10.4.7 around the same time i installed the switch. Other than that, I really only use it for one program and the specs seem to be on par with the program. here are my mac specs....
400 mHz cpu speed
512 sdram
bus speed 100 mhz
L2 Cache 1MB
Help!!!!!!!

I had the mac system screensaver "flury" set. But i just selected no screensaver and i'll see if that works. It usually feezes even before the screensaver comes on.

  • P67A-C43 / Windows 7 64-bit freezes when idle or during low activity

    Greetings,
I've seen a few similar topics regarding freezes when idle or near-idle, but the troubleshooting steps I've tried don't seem to work. My P67A-C43 with an Intel 2500K Core i5 is not overclocked. It is repeatedly freezing in Windows 7 64-bit. It also did this when I was running Vista 64-bit. I also have Mac OS X Lion on this PC, and I never get freezes under OS X. This appears to be something related to how Windows interacts with idling or lower-power states. But I can't figure out what.
I have tried this with windows on a mechanical HDD and with the current SSD - no change.
I have tried running just one RAM module at a time - they both individually exhibit the behavior.
I have tried switching graphics cards from a GeForce 6500 GT to the current Radeon HD 6850 - no change.
I have tried switching power supplies from an Inland Gold 500W to the current OCZ 650W - no change.
I have tried switching from Intel SVID to APS mode stepping - no change.
I have tried switching C-States off - the system didn't freeze, but it got VERY hot under no load. Without C-states turned on, the CPU temperatures quickly reach 95C to 98C.
I've got the latest BIOS, the latest drivers, and everything else I can think of. Any more ideas?

    WOW do I feel silly.
I opened the case to take a good look at the processor cooling, and found that the fan/heatsink assembly was not snapped in on one of the posts. The pre-applied thermal paste was only flattened on one side of the copper contacts for the heatsink.
I re-attached and snapped it all back in, and now my BIOS temperature reading is about 55C, whether C-State is on or off. In Windows without much of a load, it was 40-45C with C-States off, and 33-45C with C-States on.
    What I've learned:
    - double check your connections
    - C-States is an amazingly effective system
    - Intel makes some darn tough chips. They'll work (sort of) even if you install them wrong.
I'm still not sure if the freezing is fixed - I don't know how long I've been running without a proper heat sink. I'll leave it idling overnight (It's 23:30 here now), and see if it freezes.
Thanks for the help, guys. This is a nice forum.

  • MacBook Pro freezes when idle and while first boot.

Hi everyone, sorry for my english i'm not a native speaker.
    I have a problem with my MacBook Pro "Core i7" 2.2 15" Late 2011 (MD318LL)
    Specs:
    - Intel I7-2675QM 2.2GHz
    - 4Gb 1333 DDR3
    - Radeon HD 6750M and Intel HD Graphics 3000
    - 500 GB (5400 RPM)
I bought it while i was in USA it was refubished
Everything was fine while i was in USA.
In russia (yep i'm from russia) macbook started to freeze while first boot (while it cold) and in idle (only in mac os x 10.8.2, i think it's becouse macbook cools down, in windows efi don't give acces to intel hd 3000, so macbook stays hot: cpu 60C\140F )
I changed ram,hdd nothing helped. Ran Apple Service Diagnostic nothing wrong (except for hdd test: error -33000 [wrong drive type] but i think it's becouse of ssd (i changed hdd to ssd to test if hdd is ok)).
Reinstalled Mac OS X same, installed windows same.
Everything fine in startup manager, or while installing mac os x, or while downloading mac os x (cmd+r in start up manager) and laptop is cold.
In games, programs, test everything fine. I think that problem in microcrack (hair crack not sure how in english). Any ideas? Ask any question.

I'm having the exact same issue. It came out of nowhere. I think I should get it serviced first and if will still have it, I will get it fixed.
I have Macbook Pro 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3. I bought this in early 2011 which is 2010 Model.

  • Remote deskto freezes if idle

    Hi all;
I got this weird problem: A computer which used to work perfectly well connecting with remote desktop while outside the network was brought into the network. Now if the remote desktop session is idle, it freezes and it takes 30 seconds  to 1 minute
for it to re-establish once the user tries to get back to work. Other machines within the network are OK.
I have experienced this with some other machines as well, connecting from outside the network.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Server is 2012 server. Stations - vary: XP - win7.

    Hi,
Before providing you any information, please reply additional details from your side.
    1.  Can you successfully logon to the RDS server after it freeze for while?
    2.  Do all clients encounter the same issue? If not, please help to check RDC client version    on the problematic client.
    3.  Have you try to temporarily disable all firewall to check if this issue can be resolved?
    4.  Did you find any Event log on server side for root cause?
The issue which you are facing might occurs due to preparing network connection, or might if possible any 3rd party software cause this issue. Here suggesting you to check network traffic and also try to use latest RDP v 8.0 or 8.1(Temporary unavailable for
    up gradation) for better experience.
    Hope it helps!
    Regards.

  • PB freezes when idle, need to close and open display to un-freeze

My PB seems to go to sleep fine when it's been idle for awhile and I've left the display open but when I go to use it, it seems to be frozen. The display comes back on and the curser moves but nothing happens. If I close the lid and re-open it, it will do everything I asked it to while frozen (ie, if I clicked on a window it will go to it or if I clicked on a menu, it will open it). It seems to be getting worse now though. The first time I close and open the lid after a freeze-up, the screen goes black and you can see the curser but nothing else. It will work again fine on the second close and open cycle. All this started happening when I got it back after having the HD replaced. I have done the ctrlcommand+PR trick. Nothing changed. Anyone have any answers?

Is the Home button physically broken? If so, you can use the multitasking gestures to get to the Home screen (the four/five finger pinch).
See Settings > General > Multitasking Gestures to turn ON.

  • Envy 15 freezes when idle

    Hi,
I've bought brand new HP Envy 15 about 4 months ago. I observed sporadic hangs during this time, but it happened not too often, so I did not pay attention to that. But recently situation changed dramatically.
If laptop was powered off more then 1 hour, it completely hangs on boot, and it takes about 4-5 hard reboots to make it work. Moreover, if I leave it idle with no applications running, it hangs with OS booted. Even HP recovery tools that supposed to restore laptop to factory settings hang.
First I checked for driver/bios updates, nothing helped. Then I thought it is a sort of hard disk/memory problem, but *all* built-in tests provided with laptop (full hard disk surface scan, memory test, etc.) pass. I also tried to install Ubuntu on this laptop, but behavior is the same.
I also noticed that if I create a simple "while(true)" program (that will for sure load one CPU core) and keep it running, laptop works for weeks just fine, but once that program is stopped, laptop hangs in seconds. So I assume this is a kind of power-saving issue with one of hardware components. Is it a known issue?
Laptop is Envy 15 (product number A9P60UA), tested on Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit and Ubuntu 12.04 64-bit

I am also having similar freezing issues. I have an iMac G5 2.0ghz machine.
My problem is that the system completely freezes up, so I have to turn off the computer using the power button.
Upon restart, the computer will just sit at the grey screen with the Apple logo and hang. The fans cycle at full tilt, but nothing.
I have now performed an erase and install 3 times, and I'm very upset with this upgrade. I have wasted the last two weekends on this garbage.
Apple phone support suggested it might be a USB peripheral that I had attached, so I've tried unhooking everything.
I have no weird apps installed, and only use the computer lightly for mostly internet stuff... Mail and Safari, and a bit of iPhoto and iTunes.
I am convinced my problems are not unique, and this should have been picked up in beta testing!

  • Computer freezes after idle after installing yosemite

I would like to know if there is a way to uninstall yosemite and go back to mountain lion, everytime I come back from idle my mini mac freezes and I have to constantly restart my mini mac to get it to work

You can downgrade by repartitioning the drive, then reinstalling Mountain Lion from your backup made prior to installing Yosemite. If you have no backup then you can use Internet Recovery if your hardware supports it: Computers that can be upgraded to use OS X Internet Recovery.
Install OS X Using Internet Recovery
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
Boot to the Internet Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND-OPTION- R keys until a globe appears on the screen. Wait patiently - 15-20 minutes - until the Recovery main menu appears.
Partition and Format the hard drive:
Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
After DU loads select your newly installed hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Install button. Be sure to select the correct drive to use if you have more than one.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
This should restore the version of OS X originally pre-installed on the computer.
If your model does not support the above, then you must install Snow Leopard:
    Clean Install of Snow Leopard
Be sure to make a backup first because the following procedure will erase
the drive and everything on it.
         1. Boot the computer using the Snow Leopard Installer Disc or the Disc 1 that came
with your computer.  Insert the disc into the optical drive and restart the computer.
After the chime press and hold down the  "C" key.  Release the key when you see
a small spinning gear appear below the dark gray Apple logo.
         2. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue
button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
After DU loads select the hard drive entry from the left side list (mfgr.'s ID and drive
size.)  Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.  Set the number of
partitions to one (1) from the Partitions drop down menu, click on Options button
and select GUID, click on OK, then set the format type to MacOS Extended
(Journaled, if supported), then click on the Apply button.
         3. When the formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed
with the OS X installation and follow the directions included with the installer.
         4. When the installation has completed your computer will Restart into the Setup
Assistant. Be sure you configure your initial admin account with the exact same
username and password that you used on your old drive. After you finish Setup
Assistant will complete the installation after which you will be running a fresh
install of OS X.  You can now begin the update process by opening Software
Update and installing all recommended updates to bring your installation current.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1. You can then upgrade to Mountain Lion provided you have a Mountain Lion installer.

  • Freezes when I open it...or when it idles, or when I try to scroll, just always freezes since latest upgrade

It freezes all the time. I cant use it anymore. When it freezes, it freezes my whole computer. Can't ctrl, alt, del to get it to quit. Nothing works...cant exit...nothing. The only thing I can do is power off with the power button.
It freezes on all moves...switching to email, adding a tab...sometimes when scrolling on a basic website....sometimes it will freeze while idling. I tried uninstalling everything...and reinstalling. I tried making that folder a .old folder (forgot what it was called) It was in the support section. Ive tried everything in support but it still freezes Tried running without add ons etc. Nothing works. Safe Mode wont work either. I have a fairlynew computer with very little loaded so I know it's not my system....plus it worpked fine before it loaded latest version.

  • Mac OS Yosemite Keynote freeze

After I have updated my MBP 2 weeks ago to OS Yosemite, my MBP hang or freeze when I am using projector to do my presentation on either Keynote or Powerpoint. It will freeze when I leave the slide on presentation mode idle for some time. The problem is intermittent - sometimes it freezes after idling for 2 minutes, sometimes longer.
The problem happens especially on Panasonic LCD projectors. I have no problems on InFocus projector but I don't know about projectors from other brands.
Any one encounter the same problem? The problem only happens after I upgrade to Yosemite. I just want to know whether the problem is due to my mac or os.

  • IPhone 5 freezes after upgrading to iOS7

I've updated my iPhone 5 64Gb from 6.1.4 to iOS 7 yesterday via Wi-Fi. And after that upgrade the iPhone started to freeze randomly. Sometimes after opening notification center, sometimes after opening control center or settings, sometimes it reboots itself. But it constantly freezes after idling for 10-15 minutes. I've got a black screen and no reaction on any buttons and touchscreen, only soft reset helps (power+home for 10 seconds). I tried to restore it with my mac and itunes but not succeeded. I also tried to reset settings from iPhone but that also didn't help.
Any ideas except downgrading to 6.1.4?

This is pretty much the same thing that's happening to my iPhone 5 32GB. I installed it September 19 and worked flawlessly until today. So far, it's "bricked" itself (turning off) 3 times today and I have to hold power+home to get it to boot.
Seems fairly random. Bricked once while opening notification center, the last time was immediately after I received a text message while in the locked screen.

  • Leopard freezes and gets kernal panic alerts

Upgraded my Macpro to Leopard. I am getting a lot of kernal panic alerts or the computer just freezes when idle and then needs to be re-booted by the power switch. Any thoughts?

i have same issue, freezes sometimes during a rise from the doc for an application..and then boom...
sometimes you can ssl to it but then that freezes too...have to usually power cycle it...was having this problem about 1 month ago then upgraded to leopard...still have it...
    any ideas?

  • Reliability on the MBP (Core 2 Duo) -- freeze wise

I'm currently using the last generation PB, but already sick and tired of the constant freeze issue, and seems like there's no solution to fix and there're more and more users experiencing the problem (check PB AL forum postings)
I think it's about time for an upgrade...
I would like to ask anyone who's using the Core 2 DUO MBP, did this problem go away when the book switched to Intel? Any freeze during idle, or from wake up etc? How would you rate it in terms of reliability?
    Thanks for your comment

I don't care if the thread is 100 pages long. You won't find me on such a thread. The only way you can really get a solution is if someone is able to focus on your situation individually. You start getting 100 people trying to solve 200 problems together, and nothing ever gets done, and you just have a rant fest filled with threadjacking. See what Terms of Use says about threadjacking, rants, and trolling. It is more a problem to try to sort out the mess of that, than try to isolate the problems people are actually solving on the thread. Tell everyone on that thread to start a new topic that has a less obvious cause for others to threadjack, and more obvious cause to isolate their problem alone if they really want a solution.
CHUD's documentation is rather sparse as to how to get a common mortal to use it, and therefore I don't touch it. There are some features of it, I wouldn't run myself because they sound like they could cause more damage than good unless you know exactly what you are doing.
If you feel you have a power management or processor issue based on Apple's hardware test CD/Restore disk Startup Manager boot that came with your machine, take it in to AppleCare to have the machine repaired.
If you have an undetectable issue that appears even after an erase and install, it probably is the RAM that is improperly seated or has gone bad, or a logicboard issue that the test does not find.
Hardware test is documented here and how to run it for a MacBook Pro:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303081
And for most Powerbook G4s is here:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86287
An Archive and Install of an older system on a newer system does not necessarily work, and you may find that causes more freezes. That's because it attempts to install older versions of applications on top of newer ones, and may not always succeed, and you could be left with applications meant for a newer system mixed in with your older system that simply don't work.
Cache programs like Onyx, Macaroni, Applejack, Tiger Cache Cleaner, etc... can cause freezes if they attempt to clear caches when the machine is writing them because the cache files get corrupted. An Archive and Install won't clean up that mess.
So is your data backed up at least twice and do you want to try to isolate your issue? Or have I given you enough information for you to get started on your own?

  • P67A-GD65 (B3) problem

    Here are my specs:
    P67A-GD65 B3 (bios v1.8)
    i5 2500k
    8GB(2x4) DDR3 Corsair XMS3 1600
    GTX260 216
Teamgroup Xtreem S1 SSD 60gb (boot drive)
    Win 7 64 bit
I have searched for a solution to my problem ,yet didn't find it so thought i'll post it here:
The MB ,CPU ,RAM and SSD where bought about 2 weeks ago brand new.
A few days ago i have experienced bad youtube/vimeo/(virtually all flash player video based sites) video playback (corrupted colors ,see attached image) ,corrupted images in browser (also a screenshot below) and artefact photoshop brushes (when painting in ps ,the brush showed similar to the youtube video playback ,random colors corruption).  I thought it's the browser (firefox 4) so i installed chrome ,same problem ,also in opera an IE8 so it's a hardware/driver problem.
At first i suspected a bad memory stick. I've tested them with memtest 3.5 from a bootable CD in dos mode ,in dual-channel ,individual sticks and in all ram slots. ZERO errors. The EFI memory tool also gave me 0 errors and also windows memory manager tool said there are no errors.
Now i suspect the motherboard. Another problem i had with the mb: it kept freezing in idle so i disabled all green-power settings ,speed step ,C1E and EIST which solved it.
I must state that i have no BSoDs ,no hangs/freezes/artefacts in 3d aplications and games, hdd played movies run perfectly fine and the pc runs ok.
I tried reinstalling my graphics drivers ,yet no result. No overclocking was applied to the system.
What can it be? I am out of answers ,google didn't helped me.
    Thank you in advance.

Did you reset the bios before usage after flashing CMOS?
Obviously something wrong with the USB driver, perhaps the mobo USB driver?
It was already reseted to defaults.
I have never had a usb problem ,this is completely new to me.

Just for clarification sake, the black ports are all SATA II & run by the Intel controller. The two white ports closest to the RAM slots are SATA III & also controlled by Intel controller. The other two white ports, 7 & 8 are the SATA III Marvell controlled.
Ok ,sorry ,i misunderstood then. Strange ,after moving them to the white ports ,they show up at boot ,in the black ports it always said no HDD installed/detected.
Ok ,so what now? it seems i jump from a problem into another ,lucky me...

  • Bluetooth remote freezing with PowerPoint on MacBook Pro while idling

I am experiencing problems with bluetooth remote controls (3 different brands) freezing up when used with MS PowerPoint on a MacBook Pro running Snow Leopard (all updated). It is intermittent in nature and appears to be related to idling when giving presentations. It can freeze as quickly as within one minute to not freezing until 30-40 minutes later. This may not be a remote control issue as the arrow keys on the keyboard will not advance or backup the PowerPoint slides as well. However, when using my iMac computer without the remote, I have not observed the freezing (although, I may not have waited long enough since the nature is intermittent and variable in time).
When frozen, the mouse centered on the slide with a touchpad click awakes the computer to work properly (quick, but not ideal solution). However, when two screens are utilized (LCD projector or another monitor) via VGA connecion in "Presenter View," the touchpad click does NOT awake the computer, regardless of where the arrow is placed on screen. During this situation, the "presented slide" can be advanced by clicking the forward and backward arrows below this "subwindow" of "Presenter View," and even clicking on the image itself will advance it forward (but not backward). When this happens, the keyboard arrows do not work in advancing or backing up the slide sequence.
When in this frozen mode with a LCD or 2nd monitor, the only way I have found to get it working again, is to "Exit Show" and pulling down the "Slide Show" tab and selecting "Play from Current Slide." This takes me back to the slide where the computer froze and allows the bluetooth remote to start working again (obviously not an optimal solution, as the software should not disengage). Again, it appears if I keep changing to another slide within a few seconds to a few minutes, the PowerPoint does not freeze up. However, it is intermittent and variable as to the length of time before it freezes up.
NOTE: I have run these same PowerPoints, with the same remote controls, without any problem for hundreds of hours over the past 3 years. I have updated MS Office 2011, from 2008, last fall and have also run these same items without problems for about 40 hours. I have run Mac "Disk Utility" and just installed a MS Office "Update" released yesterday, which has not corrected the issue as well. Is this issue a MicroSoft problem?
Bless whoever who has an answer to this complex situation. Thank you!

I am having the same problem with a minister's MacBook Pro at my church.  It started about 2-3 weeks ago.  We at first thought it was a remote issue and found out that it is not.  He is running a vitually new MacBook Pro with Mountain Lion 10.8.2 OS.  He has Microsoft Office 2011.  He has only had the computer since December.  He runs powerpoint presentations all the time.  He never had a problem until about 2 1/2 weeks ago.  When he runs powerpoint in Presenter Veiw it would freeze up on him.  You can still move the cursor over to the arrows on the presenter view slide windo and phisically click the mouse on the arrows to move forward or backward but none of keys on the keyboard work at all.  It won't even let you escape.  You have to move the cursor over the "Exit Show" button and click there.  We thought that it might be just a presenter veiw issue so we tried running it in "Mirror Mode" and that seemed to work for a while but now we are having the same freezing problems.
We have taken the laptop to the Genius Bar and talked to the guys there and they did not tell us anything that helped us.  They found this thread that you all started with our same problem.  It looks like all of us had it happen at the same time.  I find that very interesting.  My minister said that he had not run any updates so we don't think that was the issue.
I have tried uninstalling Office completely and reinstalling it with all the updates and that did not help.  I was thinking that I have a copy of Office 2008 here in the office and I was going to uninstall 2011 and install 2008 but one of you said you were having the same issue with 2008.  Maybe I can uninstall 2011 and reinstall it without doing any updates and see if that does anything.  We are very baffled and can't seem to get an answer about any of this from Mac or Microsoft.  All we get is one blaming the other.
Let us know if this is helpfull or if you have any luck.
