G4 HiRes Powerbook shuts down after having closed the lid

I own a less then 6 months old 15" 1.67 GHz HiRes Alu Powerbook. Every now and, after having closed the lid, I have observed that when I reopen the pb it has shut down. The battery is still fully charged, so it can't be the case that the pb has not gone to sleep and it has thus discharged the battery. I also think it has happend with both the power adapter connected and disconnected.
In the past I deleted power managment pref files (can't remember the details) as advised by Apple in their tech papers, which resolved sleeping problems (not mine though :-))
All tips appreciated.
Thanks, Robert

Occasionally with mine, it only appears to have shut down.
I close the lid, and there is no pulsing light. the light is off as though its shutdown.
then if I open the lid, hit a key or two, wait, then close it again, and wait, the pulsing light will appear and if I then open it, it will wake from sleep.
Weird, but you might give it a go. This seems to happen often when running video-related applications, but I have no real data here and do not know what causes it. After I discovered this problem, I use it now to prevent having to lose my work and restart.

When I want to do something like go out then I close the Lid and then I can't get the laptop to wake up again, I have tried some stuff but nothing seem to work.
I don??t use Toshiba Power Save, I use the usual-normal XP energy and I even tried with Toshiba Power saver but not the software only from Start> Control Panel > but still the laptop does not wake up after I closed the Lid down.
Anyone that can help me with this issue?

These are good news but could you please post a short instruction how you have solved this? I think it would be interesting for other users here in the forum!

  • MacBook Pro shuts down when i close the lid

    Hey,
My MacBook Pro shuts down when i close the lid.
It started to do this one or two times, but now it is every time.
I have the latest battery update, so this should not be the issue here..
    Any sugestions??
I have started to suspect the it might be some faulty conecctions or somthing..

If it's unable to go into the proper sleep state for some reason then it will do that.
Run /Utilities/Console and click 'All Messages' top left then close the lid, wait a minute then open it again - if it's shut down then reboot and open Console again and check the latest log lines looking for 'sleepimage' - it should give you an indication of what happened/didn't. If you're not sure what it all means post _just those lines_ here.

  • Shut down or just close the lid

Im a new Macbook Pro user. Do i need to shut down every thime im finished using my macbook pro, or just shut the lid. If i just shut the lid what power state will this put the macbook into? Im keen to make the most of my battery life.
    Many thanks
    Steph

Hi, i have a Macbook Pro 13 inch. And i usually just closed the lid after i have finished working with it.
Then i used it again tomorrow morning for work.
But my friend suggested that it is not safe for mac book pro users to just close the lid without shutting down the mac. It is said that if the MBP still using standard SATA Harddrive then it is wise to shut it down first, because the Harddrive still have some sort of mechanism. It is different from the SSD drive.
If the Mac uses SSD drive than its fine just to close the lid without shutting down.
Is it true? maybe someone has some informatioan about this. it would very helpfull coz i really love my MBP
    thanks

  • L655D stopped working after I closed the lid

Usually, when I close the lid, the laptop just goes to sleep.  This time, I closed the lid, left for 20 minutes, came back, opened the lid, and saw a black screen.  The computer did not respond to the touchpad, power button or keyboard until I pressed and held down the power button until the computer shut down.
Ever since then, I can't get the computer to turn on properly.  I've already tried (numerous times) removing the AC power cord and battery, holding down the power button for more than a minute, reconnect one or more power sources (battery and power cord), etc.
Hitting F2 doesn't work.  I don't even see a faint image of anything on the screen, so it's not a backlight issue.  I even created a USB and a DVD boot and that did not work.
Each time I turn on the computer, this happens:
    1. One of the blue LED lights (possibly the power) comes on.
    2. The cooling fan comes on.
    3. The CD/DVD multidrive whirls for about a second if the drive is empty.  When a Windows 7 boot disc is in the drive, the computer tries to read the disk (whirls and pauses) for many seconds and then finally stops.
    PLEASE help.  Thanks.

OK.  After almost 10 years of buying Toshiba laptops (3), I am going back to Dell.  Just ordered one from buy.com.
I don't want to deal with problems with AC adapters and jacks, the computer not starting up, etc., anymore.  Life's too short.

  • IPhone 5 shuts down after having 36% battery left.

Okay so I have an iPhone 5 running iOS 6.1
I haven't had this problem at all until updating to 6.1
Everytime my phone hits 36% battery, it shuts down.
    It is not jailbroken either.
When I try turning it on, the charging idicator turns on and that's when I need to plug it back in.
IT HAS 36% battery left! Why is it shutting down!?
I called Apple and they couldn't explain the problem to me and wanted to charge me $49.99?
    Ridiculous!
I HAVE TRIED restoring it 3 times. 2 times I used backup and the 3rd time I set it as a new iPhone.
Still having the issue.. Please help me?

    The Basic Troubleshooting Steps are:
Restart... Reset... Restore from Backup...  Restore as New...

  • IPhone 5s shuts down after being in the cold for a while

I have an iPhone 5s.  I go outside jogging at noon and listen to the radio on the phone app.  Since it is cold outside, it has happened several times that after about 20 minutes I come back into the building and take out and check my phone it shuts down by itself.  If I try to restart, it will tell me the battery is low and need recharge.  I will have to wait for a couple of minutes before I could restart.  First couple of times, the battery was low, close to 10%.  Today it happened again.  When I restarted eventually, it showed over 60% battery life left.  Has anyone else had similar issues?  The warrenty just expired.  What is my option?

  • Laptop shuts down when I close the lid

I just recently purchased an HP Pavilion x360. It was working fine until HP did an update and now everytime I close the lid, the computer shuts down and has to restart when I open it. I've checked all of the power settings, including the one that allows you to specify what it should do when I close the lid but having found nothing that helps. Any suggestions? Robby

Hi Robby, Welcome to the HP Forums!
I would like to take a moment and thank you for using the forum, it is a great place to find answers. For you to have the best experience in the HP forum, I would like to direct your attention to the HP Forums Guide First Time Here? Learn How to Post and More. I understand that before you did a HP update you were able to close the lid and reopen without Windows restarting, but no longer. You have checked the power management setting and the option for what happens when you close the lid, but no change. I suggest you do a scan for corrupted files. This process will also try to repair any corrupted files it locates.Go to the command prompt and right click on it and run as administratorType sfc /scannow and press enterWait for this to complete and restart your notebook. Windows 8 has a built in troubleshooter you could also try.Press the Windows key + C to open charmsType troubleshoot performance and press enter.Follow the on screen prompts. If that did not help. you can do a restore back to before you installed the update. You also have the optiion to do a Refresh Your PC to Resolve Problems (Windows 8).  To be on the safe side I would backup your personal data first, to ensure no personal data is lost. You could also do a recovery back to factory.  Performing an HP System Recovery (Windows 8).  You will receive a prompt to backup your personal files to prevent data loss, if you have not done one recently, I  suggetst you do one now.Restoring Files that were Backed Up Using HP Recovery Manager (Windows 8) With the notebook being a fairly recent purchase, you could also contact HP support for assistance.  They can remotely log onto your system to aid with locating and resolving issues.    Please call HP technical support at 800-474-6836. • How do I get my lap top to shut down when I close the lid?

I have tried to switch on the function that shuts down my lap top when I close the lid but am either dumb or lazy and gave up too quickly.... any help would be greatly apprecated.

    Thanks Poikkeus
My mac goes to sleep when I close the lid pretty quickly but when I open up the lid it opens up again where I left off.
Some nice person burgled me some time ago and stole my mac so I want to force my mac to close right down so when someone else opens up they are forced to open up in guest.  I can then track my mac without risking them accessing my personal details etc.

  • T61 sudden shut down after I replaced the fan

I was getting a fan error (that was preventing the unit from booting), so I ordered a replacement.
On installing it last night, everything seemed fine. Unit ran fine for 20m then Bam! sudden shutdown.
This morning, same thing, both witht the battery installed and with it out.
I have to suspect the fan, but I presume the unit wouldn't even boot if the fan was not working.
any suggestions for diagnosing the issue?
    many thanks

    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Difficult to say...
Theory says system shutdowns automatically to avoid permanent damage, but if you tried to run it several times...
Anyway a new CPU won't cost you much. Try again once the thermal paste is reapllied.
I hope you're using the HMM and following the steps described there. Don't forget to tell us the machine type number (see my post above)
    Good luck!

  • I recently got my GPU error fixed, but now my MacBook Pro shuts down whenever I close the lid.

I bought my computer in July 2010.  After 3 and a half years I finally discovered there was and an issue.  GPU error. Fine. ok.  I went to the store and even though they were nice enough to fix it for free, I'm now having another issue.  Whenever I shut my computer lid, the screen and keyboard doesn't work.  I can hear the computer fans but no matter what I do I can't get the keyboard or screen to work.  In order to get it to turn back on, I have to hold down the power button until I hear the inside turn off.  Then I have to hold the power button again to turn it back on.  DId they give me a faulty part when they fixed it? Or is there something I can do? My computer is in great condition. No scratches, never been dropped, etc.  HOW DO I GET MY SCREEN AND KEYBOARD TO WORK?

    Try resetting the  SMC http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3964
If not take it back to where you had the work done.

  • W520 cannot turn on after hibernation (closing the lid)

When I close my W520's lid and it goes into hibernation, it sometimes cannot turn on again.
The power button will be lit and when i press it, the thinklight flashes but the computer will not boot. It will repeat this process continously for a few times.
Also, I notice that the first two LED indicators on the cover will be lit.
Is anyone able to advice me on this? Should I send it for servicing?

Are you sure it goes into hibernation? By default it goes to sleep when you close the lid.

I want my screen/Mac to sleep, how do I do that? Heeelp!

    Try Reset SMC. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964

  • Macbook shutting down after 10 seconds of inactivity

    Hi,
My daughters macbook will not power up unless you run your finger over the trackpad, it just shuts down if you are not doing this. This also happens during normal use if left for more than 10 seconds. It puts the the shut down message and powers down the macbook. Any ideas?

Are you still having problems? or is it fixed?
I have just been through a big problem similar to this but mine was shutting down after 40mins.
The reason I said "big" was that I have had the problem when doing large downloads and then having to restart them again only to have it happen again. I had spoken to AppleCare and for more than a year the issue was not resolved.
I was told to take my computer the local 'MacDoctors' and they said they thought it was the Hard Drive and replaced it and then charged me to transfer my data. The data transfer was mucked up (if you don't know what Mucked Up means replace the 'M' with a 'F' and you'll get it) causing more trouble.
It didn't fix the problem but it did mean I couldn't go for a Macca's for a month (kidding - I still went to Maccas but didn't order fries).
Anyway, finally, in desperation and much frustration I thought I would give the Apple Care guys another go and got an 'escalation' guy that really took charge of the problem. He didn't know what to do to fix it but was talking about it to one of his fellow super techosleuths and his friend asked has he looked at the 'Security and Privacy' option in the System Preferences?
Inside that option is an 'Advance' option (OSX 10.7.5) and once opened has a tick box which asks when you want your computer to shut down. Sure enough it was ticked for 40mins - it is now unticked.
I have mentioned this to Applecare people and the MacDoctors and NONE of them had any idea that this tick box was in that section of the system.
Computer shutting down?..... check it out.
