G4 - how much power does it use?

How does the computer use power? It's not like a heavy duty motor in a refrigerator, a shop vac., heater or power tools...
How much power does a powermac G4 consume, on average...in terms of dollars added to a monthly bill? I see on the back of the Mac that it's rated at 6 to 8 amps, but I can't understand how it can suck up that much electricity when all I hear is the fan, basically.
I use it for video editing, so if remove internet, and most other programs that might use power, except for apps needed for video, photoshop and text edit, would I save at all?
thanks!

Hardware, not software, uses power. One heavy-duty program may demand more of the hardware than another but most--pro audio/video editing and some 3D games excepted--never force the hardware to work up a sweat on modern machines.
There is a current tester that clamps around the main power cord of anything electrical to read power consumption. I can't find the link to it right but it is standard piece of kit for electricians. My appliance guy's tool bag has sported one as long as I've known him. If you REALLY need to find out hard numbers, that's the way to go; be aware that the tester I saw on the 'net was US$100--you could run a G4 a long time for $100.

  • How much POWER does iMac use in sleep?

I need to know this to get the right UPS. I cannot find it on the Apple Spt site. Thanks.

So... a 700VA backup should last 455Watts PER computer. With 2 Macs on the backup, I should get 227 Watts/4Watts/hr = 56 hours of backup. Thus, the unit should last about 2 days 8 hours, if the Macs are asleep. This ought to be plenty of time. The only time we have been down more than a few hours was when the last hurricane blew through.

If you have another DSL modem combo, how much power does your DSL modem combo use?

  • How much power does a Mac use when it's sleeping

I recently asked about shutting down vs. sleeping a computer at night. Now I'm wondering how much power it uses sleeeping. I have a laptop which I imagine is pretty dormant. What about a desktop-- Intel Mac?

I can tell you nothing about a laptop as I don't see a way of measuring what it's using while asleep. As for the desktop you are pretty much spot on, You can use it for about 11 times longer than a 100W light bulb for the same money.
In fact by using one of those price comparison websites I work out that it'd cost, (@ 10.17p/KWH), [24x365] x 0.009 x 0.1017 = £8.018 if it was left on standby all the time for a full year.
That excludes things like a standing charge for the electricity, and assumes you were on the Fixed S@ver Dual Fuel plan from EDF Energy.

  • How much power do iMacs use when working and asleep?

As usual, whilst claiming green credentials, the information Apple gives regarding power use is minimal and vague to the point of being meaningless.
The only figures they quote are:-
    Maximum continuous use 205w  (21.5")  and  310w  (27")
What exactly does maximum continuous use mean ?
    a. When the machine is switched on but not doing anything
    b. Working at general office tasks
    c. Working flat out transcoding video etc.
Which of these is it?  Or is it all 3?
Does it use more power when performing harder tasks?
If so, what power is used under scenarios a and b?
Finally, how much power is used in sleep mode?

Apple, nor any other device, apple or otherwise, isn't going to give you every power draw for every possible scenario.  So they post what the maximum power would be under maximum load (graphics intensive, computations utilizing all the cores, etc.).  That would be useful for estimating, say, what UPS to choose for the machine.
You want various power draws under various conditions then attach a wattmeter or a KiloWatt EZ.
    Why are these details significant?
As for sleep, I found the following (reference):

  • How much Power does the FIS2R drains?

    Hi,
thanks for your answer. But my question ist how many the Mobo consumes. Without the periphery!
Why do I want to know this?
    My Machine:
    - MSI 865PE NEO2 FIS2R (Bios 1.8)
    - Zalman ZM400A-APF Power Supply (400W)
    - 1 GB Dual Channel RAM ( 2 x Corsair TWINX512-3200CL2PRO in Slot 1/3) running at 2-3-3-6
    - 2 x Samsung SP1604N as Raid 0 on IDE3
    - 1 x Teac 516E DVD Rom
    - 1 x LG GSA 4040b Multi DVD Writer
    - 1 x Terratec Aureon Fun 5.1 (PCI Slot 3)
    - 1 x ASUS Radeon 9800XT (AGP Slot)
Cause I got almost all information about my periphery I want to know what the Mobo with it's onboard components consumes. The Zalman 400W is one of the best PSU out there as THG said in a test. But are 400W enough to be stable under heavy stress? Most 450-500W PSU aren't delivering what they offer.
So what is the consumption of the Mobo itself with all onboard components turned on (Firewire, USB Ports....)
It should be possible to calculate a whole systemconsuption based on all information I have, or not?

  • How much data does AirPlay use?

Let's say one 90 min. movie streaming from my Mac to atv2. Any ideas aprox. How much Internet data that uses?

You said internet data and the Apple TV doesn't use the internet when streaming from your mac ***. (The internet is the other side of your router).
Additionally I assumed the question was related to cost or caps on data usage by your ISP, since any data you stream on your own local network doesn't cost anything (because it doesn't use the internet) it is somewhat irrelevant, although you may well stream 2-3 GB data per movie over your local network.
*** If you stream purchased content from your own iTunes library on your mac, the Apple TV may well connect to Apple to verify authorisation, but this an insignificant amount of data and likely measured in a few KB. (1,000,000 KB = 1 GB)

  • How much data does facetime use on my ipod 4

My ipod touch 4g wgen i go to settings it says. 7.1gb available and 6.6 gb used but mine is a 16gb and when you add it up its only 13.7  and i think it has something to do with facetime cause i call like every day and it  lasts for pike one hour and fourty one minutes  (that is the longest they usually now last 30 minutes or less ) please help??:)

FaceTime use does not use any of your storage except maybe a KB or so.
The difference you see is due to:
    - The IOS itself using storage. The is not available to the users.
    - How GB is uses and advertised. See:
How Mac OS X and iOS report storage capacity

  • How much data does iMessage use to text internationally?

I have a friend in France n I live in Hawaii, and I'd like to know how much data it uses to text there cause I have a limited data plan and I don't want to go over >_<

A single iMessage uses so little data you'd have to send about a thousand just to notice. Each character in an iMessage uses about 0.1 bytes and there are over a billion bytes in a gigabyte. Also it doesnt matter where you are sending it because it goes over the internet. It will be the same where ever.
    Hope this helped!

  • How much data does forwarding use?

    Hi All,
Just curious if people know how much data forwarding uses? I'm traveling to Europe next week and need to have my phone available until I meet someone, but then I want to forward it to my home number for the rest of the trip. I know forwarding uses data so I was curious as to what the hit would be to forward it from France.
    Thanks!

  • How much "power" does iMovie 09 need to run good, ie CPU & memory

Hi I have a 20-inch iMac (MA876LL), Mid 2007 iMac, it has a 2GHz. it came with 1Gb, but I upgraded to an extra 1Gb, so have a total of 2Gb in my iMac now.
I know about minimum specifications required for software, which I never really take much notice of.
So with iMovie, with new slow mo, stabilisation etc will be requiring more and more from iMac, and other apps, iTunes, Garageband, iMovie etc, now what do you think its a good base config to have?
I think my iMac can support 4Gb in total, so was maybe going to buy another 2Gb stick, and sell my 1Gb, so I would have total of 3Gb in?
I cannot upgrade CPU obviously, I have plenty spare HDD (I have a 320Gb one)
    cheers

I'll never try to talk anyone out of more RAM. The more the better. If you can afford to go to 4 GB, go for it, you never regret adding more RAM.
How satisified you'll be with your iMac and iMovie depends on the type of footage you're editing (HD, DV, 540 or 1080), the size (length) of the project, and the amount of effects/transitions/bells/whistles you intend to use. For the most part, your iMac should be great if you keep to 540 or less (as Apple suggests) and under 10-15 minutes. I'm not saying you can't do more, you're just far more likely to run into sluggishness.
Really, where you'll be wishing you had a fire breathing Mac Pro is on export. We all wish we had more power when it comes to export.

  • FC 6.04 --how much power does it really need?

I'm working on a project i(FCP v. 6.04) that at the moment is 158mb, and it will get a lot bigger as cuts are added. But I am already finding it hard to impossible to open another project --to extract a bin, for example--or export anything. Program freezes. I'm working on a dual 2ghz G5 with 3.5 gigs of RAM, so I would think I was okay power wise. Any suggestions?

Just for the record, I've worked on many feature length documentaries that get bigger than this....but the suggestion to use another drive helped a lot! Interestingly, I wasn't using either the system or the media storage drive, but a second internal hard drive. Clearly something is wrong with it, and I should have checked that out before.
Thanks all who participated for your feedback.
