OK. I'm guessing it's bus powered and you're not getting enough power to it with your machine. Some bus powered drives will work with overspec USB ports, but will require more power with standard spec USB ports.
There are special "Y" cables which plug into two USB ports to extract more power. Does it come with a power adapter port?
While you may not be able to see it in Disk Utility, I would guess that you should be able to open up System Profiler, check the USB section under Hardware, and see your drive in the USB Tree. I've seen that myself with a SimpleTech Pinifarina design drive.

  • IBook TrackPad not recognized in System Prefs?

    Hello,
I have the Mid-2005 1.42ghz iBook. It's a great machine that I love except for one thing....the scrolling TrackPad. It does not work and is not recognized in System Preferences. It does not show up under Keyboard & Mouse. I've taken the top-case off to check the cables and they all looked tight and even replaced the top-case with a new one and it still doesn't work. I've used the 10.4.4 Tiger install discs as that is what it was shipped with. I'm out of ideas here and am hoping that someone can help me. I've resorted to using a mouse along side of it and it's aggravating. Please don't tell me "Logic Board Replacement." Thanks!

    Hey PM and Cornelius,
Well the first thing that comes to mind is that the track pad, keyboard, power and charger are all controlled by that PMU99 that I've been bugging everyone about.
    Here's my other post:
"There's been a lot of problems lately on this group with the above mentioned issues. It could be a PMU problem. The PMU is actually a tiny computer within the computer. It's official designation is PMU99.
    http://developer.apple.com/documentation/Hardware/DeveloperNotes/Macintosh_CPUs-G4/12inchPowerBookG4/2_Architecture/chapter_3_section4.html
    "Power Control IC
The power manager IC in the 12-inch PowerBook G4 is a Mitsubishi M16C/62F microprocessor, also called the PMU99. It operates with its own RAM and ROM. The functions of the PMU99 include:
*controlling the sleep and power on and off sequences
    *real time clock
*controlling power to the other ICs
    *monitoring the battery charge level
    *controlling battery charging
*supporting the interface to the built-in keyboard ( and trackpad )
The 12-inch PowerBook G4 can operate from a 15-volt power outlet on an airliner, however for safety reasons the computer will not allow battery charging. In order for the computer to detect the connection to airline power, the airline power cable should have a sense resistor of 24.3K ohms connected between the power plug's shell and ground.
The PMU99 also provides the hardware interface to the keyboard. Software in the PMU99 IC scans the keyboard, then sends the data to the system in packets like those from the ADB. To the system, the keyboard behaves as if they were ADB devices"
    Try resetting it:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=14449
If that doesn't work try what I call a deep PMU reset.
Pull all power including the battery, push the power button to remove residual charge in soft start capacitors.
Then walk away from it for at least 10 hours.
Now PMU99 has been responsible for soft start in Macs apparently since the first G3s and run all the way thru the G5s. From:
    http://www.theapplemuseum.com/index.php?id=30
    "Power Macintosh G3/G4/G5 clock/softstart chip: PMU99"
So this deep reset has worked for G3s going back to the Beige and recently a G4 Sawtooth with a 1.5 GB CPU upgrade.
I've also seen problems with the super capacitors that sort of take the place of the PMU battery but that has been on older G3s. These are there to hold settings during battery swaps and not sure what else. I've seen two go open but am not sure what that would mean to all the PMU functions. If it shorted I could see that as a real problem."

  • IPod touch 4g is not recognized in my computer as a portable device, help?

I have an iPod Touch 4th generation (4.2.1) and the computer it was initially synced with (a Dell Inspiron laptop) is no longer working.  I would like to update the iPod software via iTunes, and I have already transferred purchases and backed up my iPod, but now I need to secure my music before it restores my iPod and I am left with none of my music from my Dell laptop.
I know that I can easily transfer my songs from my iPod to a folder on my computer just as long as I can actually get my iPod to show up in "My Computer" under "Portable Devices".  But as of now, my iPod only shows up as a "Digital Camera".
Please, someone, anyone, HOW CAN I GET MY IPOD 4G TO SHOW UP UNDER "MY COMPUTER > PORTABLE DEVICES?"
I have been working at this for HOURS, I just want to update my iPod and keep all of my music, I don't think this is "illegal", nor should it be so difficult to simply secure music from a previous PC.
    Thanks in advance.

  • IBook G3 hard drive not recognized

I have a challenge for anyone. I have a ibook 366(clamshell) that is not recognizing the hd. It was working wonderfully one night I shut it down and the next day I get the flashing question mark. I've tried all of the normal stuff: zap pram, reset nvram tried to use command and s but it didn't go to the programmers screen and all the such. I can boot from a cd but none of the utilities see the hd. I have taken the hd out and connected it to a usb to ide cable that allows me to use it as an external drive and it is recognized without any problem on all of the other macs I connect it to and even on a pc (I know I said the bad word.)Does anyone have any clue what could be the issue. Every thing else seems to work fine. Just the hd is not being recognized. I even put in a different hd. I even formatted the drive using one of my macs that I only have 9.2.2 on and installed a os on it and it still didn't work. The hard drive worked fine and the os with all of its components seemed to be fine. I know it's an older system but it's something that I can let the kids play on and not be concerned with losing any of my files.
    I appreciate any help

  • IPad not recognized within iBooks for Proofing

When you load an expanded/unzipped ePub folder with the .epub extension added into iBooks using the File/Advanced/Add ePub to Library as Proof option, you select the purple "Devices" button and within the header of your ePub proof window, you should see your tethered iPad as a selectable device to proof from. However, I have one Mac Pro station that will not recognize any iPad that is connected. Whereas, an exact duplicate workstation, with the exact same specs and software, can see the very same iPads and connect to them. Has anyone seen this problem? It seems to defy logic.
This problem has existed since the release of Yosemite, when Apple deprecated "BookProofer". If anyone has seen this issue and/or has solved it, it would be tremendously helpful to know the solution. The Apple iBooks team is currently working on the problem, but has not found the solution.

Hi, please help, I have just fitted a 1GB ram to my ibook as recommended by the apple genius.
When I click on about this mac it still says 256ram.
Have I done anything wrong? Ive refitted it again and it still doesnt recognize it?
Is there something else I need to do?

bluebubble, Welcome to the discussion area!
Resetting the PRAM has nothing to do with it.
One or more of the following is true:
    (1) The RAM isn't installed properly.
    (2) The RAM isn't compatible with your iBook.
    (3) The RAM is defective.
    (4) The iBook's motherboard is defective and not recognizing the RAM.

  • External keyboard and mouse not recognized after waking from sleep

This started happening all of a sudden. It was working fine before that. When I disconnect the power cable, keyboard, and then connect them back, its not recognized. To make it recognize the keyboard and mouse, I have to logout and login or restart the laptop. I looked at this related post, but the PRAM reset fix did not work for me : http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=870482
Any idea how to fix it?

Processor 2.9 GHz Intrel Core i7
    Memory 16GB 1600 MHz DDR3

I have a similar problem on our G3 iBook with Panther. Most of the keys don't work, and of the four or five that do, they print only gibberish.
For a while I had control of the "C" key, and I was able to start from the Installation CD-ROM. I ran Disk Utility. It found and repaired a whole bunch of permissions and reported no problem with the hard disk. But I still cannot use the keys, and since then I've lost the use of the "C" also.
Because I cannot use the keyboard, I cannot type in my administrator's password, and for that reason I cannot use System Preferences to start from the Installation CD-ROM. I did not see the Hardware Test on the CD-ROM, but it sounds interesting.
Any ideas on how to get back to the CD-ROM when my keyboard doesn't work?

  • Camera not recognized any more....??

    Hello,
I have a Sony TRV-11 camera and its miniDV and have been using it for 5 years or so importing and editing and dumping footage back to my camera, no issue...
Now that I updated to iMovie HD it tells me when I click on Share to put my camera in VTR mode not Camera mode.
First I have VCR which is the same, and have always used the VCR mode to record back to my camera. The other options are Camera, which iMovie say its in, but iMovie is wrong, and Memory, which I don't even use....
So anyone else have a camera not being recognized by iMovie after updateing to HD? Any solutions? Suggustions?
Since I have three options and I am in the right one and iMovie doesn't believe me, now what?
And the same thing happens on my wifes iBook so its not just my Powerbook...
    Thanks

  • IMovie '08: Built-in iSight camera not recognized in Yosemite

    On this page

iMovie '08: Built-in iSight camera not recognized
    it says:
    In Finder, navigate to /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/
Select the file com.apple.mio.VDCAssistant.plist and delete.
    Restart your system.
You should now be able to use your iSight camera with iMovie.
However, in Yosemite, it only has this file name
    com.apple.cmio.VDCAssistant.plist
and I don't want to delete it as instructed without someone who knows telling me it won't hurt my newly installed and thus far working well OS 10.10.1, with iMovie 7.1.4 on my iMac 24 inch, Early 2008, 2.8 GHz Intel Dore 2 Duo, 2 GB 800 MHz DDR2  SDRAM.  It worked with Leopard, and I don't recall having to use the above mentioned support page.

Contact Apple. I believe you have a hardware issue there if it's not showing up in your System profiler.

  • Repeat request 4 help - iTunes 6.0 not recognizing purchased

I'm re-posting this question, hoping for help... thanks!
iTunes 6.0 software not recognizing purchased songs
    ( msg # 1.: Posted Oct 15, 05 9:14 pm )
    Good Evening,
I had written for help before, but couldn't get the 5.0.1 problem resolved. There was great advice (bnoir, et al), but lack of time and frustration played a factor.
So I hear Itunes 6.0 is out and I figure it's a fix to the problems people had with the previous version. Maybe it is, maybe it isn't.
I run iTunes on a Windows XP platform on an IBM computer (from the Dell people). I have a 3rd generation iPod, which has 20 gigs.
My iTunes shows that I have 5239 songs (some of which are short comedy bits) that I've never had a problem uploading to my iPod before the upgrades (5 and above). Here's what I've done to resolve this problem so far:
    1) Uninstalled Quicktime
    2) Turned off my spyware and virus programs
    3) Downloaded the newest version of Quicktime (standalone application file)
    4) Uninstalled iTunes 5.0.1 version
    5) Restarted the computer
    6) With spyware and virus off, installed quicktime, then iTunes 6.0 version
Everything seemed to be working well. I suddenly could play music on the newest version with my computer. It didn't freeze, I was thrilled.
    HERE COMES THE PROBLEM:
Plugged in my iPod to do an update... haven't been able to do so since late August 2005. Got an error message that read
"Some of the songs in the iTunes music library were not copied to the iPod "Josette's iPod" because your iPod software is too old. Got to www.apple.com/ipod to get the latest iPod software update."
So now, instead of 5239 songs, my iPod only has 4858. It doesn't look like it downloaded any songs that I had purchased from the iTunes music store. That's 370 songs, none of which are showing. But theres a few more than that (do the math), but not many.
I did a screenshot of the error message, which I typed out above. I'd send you the shot, but I couldn't figure out how to attach it to this forum.
Any assistance would be appreciated. I'd love to hear these songs in my car! :-D
    Thanks,
    ~ Josette ~

Don't know if it makes any difference, but the iTunes software won't let me get into change info in the MY ACCOUNTS area. Says I need to change the computer date to sync up automatically with the internet. I checked the setting, and it does, so that can't be the problem.
It also says to check the computer's ability to accept cookies. From the internet tools menu, I can see that I'm on Medium security level, and that's not changed since I had iTunes originally.
I emailed this question to APPLE earlier this evening, but the reply said it would take around 72 hours to answer.
Don't know if that's related or not... but it's worth adding to the pot.
Is it worth going back and uploading an OLD version of iTunes? Maybe the 4.? version? (Not that I'd know where to find that, but it's worth asking).
    Bnoir, anyone?
    THanks a bunch!

I returned the Mac Mini and got an iBook G4 instead.

  • IPod Touch 4th gen not recognized in iTunes, read below...

So I plug my iPod touch 4th gen into my Windows 8 laptop and I get the little Windows 8 has recognized that a USB device has been plugged in jingle.  But the iPod does not charge, is not recognized by iTunes, and is not recognized by File Explorer.  So all I really get is the jingle.  How do I fix this?  I just downloaded the latest iTunes (11.1.1).  Thanks for your help!

I was having the same problem,  finally figured it out.  I am a W8 user.  Went to control panel, device  manager, and expanded portable devices. I happened to have my iPhone  plugged in to a USB port, and it showed up.  Clicked on the iPhone,  clicked on the driver tab, and updated the driver.  Now it connects to  iTunes.

So  apparently the driver in my iPhone 4 was the problem.  The TS1538  article did not address this issue.  I still think it has something to  do with the iTunes 11.1.1.11 update, because my phone and my wife's  iPhone 4s worked before the update and didn't after the update.  My  guess is this is the problem many are having right now.

  • IPhone name not recognized by Win7 x64

    Hi,
I have 2 iPhone 4, both are using one Apple universal docker to connect to PC, phone has its own name, and diaplay properly on PC wherever the device name is used, ie, under My Computer, Portable Devices. iPhone 4 are shown as A's iPhone or B's iPhone, as Digital Camera.
I encountered this issue after installed iTunes 10.5 or upgraded to iOS 5, I am not sure which one caused the problem. The issue is, B phone is no longer recognized as B by Win7 x64, while A phone has no problem at all, both are with iOS 5.
When I put B phone to docker or even connect to PC directly, it is always recognized as A, the device name is always A's name, but the content (camera photo etc) is still B's content.
When using iTunes, phone's name displays correctly.
I connected B phone to another USB port which is never used by iPhone before, Win7 detected and tried to download/install and finally, B phone is shown as Apple Portable Device, no Phone Name, not as Digital Camera as before. Again in iTunes, both phones are shown correctly with their own name.
Not a big issue but a little bit confused, how to correct device name here?
    Thanks

  • IPod Nano (3rd gen) not recognized by iTunes

I've got a 933mhz iBook G4 running 10.5.1, I hooked up my brand new iPod Nano, iTunes recognized it, I was halfway through the syncing process when I decided to stop it during the photo sync. Now the iPod keeps shutting down right after it tries to sync then starts back up again. It's not recognized by this computer at all. I tried to hook it up to my G5 iMac, and no go there. Ideas anyone?

I have the same problem. My Iphone 4s works fine when docked to PC. PC won't recognize my 3rd Gen Nano. Same goes for my Work PC. They don't recognize it nor will plugging it in to a PC charge it. I have to plug it into wall socket to charge.
I have tried resetting, I have tried downloading newest Itunes.
Must be the Nano itself if it doesn't get recognized by mutliple PCs?
I haven't used the Nano for probably 2 months. Previously it worked fine...
One thing, when docked to my laptop during a reboot/startup, it intially starts to charge the Nano, but once setup is finished it doesn't recognize it any longer...
