G4,Ilife 08-06 what to do?

G4, 10.4.11, 1.25 ghz power PC with version 4 iDVD,IPHOTO,iMOVIE. Have iLife 08 disc ready to install only to learn can't really install 08 versions of iDVD&iMOVIE but apparently can download 06 version that will work instead of 08. Is this true? Are there issues going from version 04 to 06 & 08 and if so what can be done? Does Apple help out with such issues? Can't quite sort out what to do from the many discussion postings. Thanks, Steve

F Shippey: Thanks for responding. Unfortunately, I can't seem to figure out just how and where to find the Apple upgrade/download site page I need for this. Any Ideas??

  • How do I install iLife 8 and what happens to all my old projects?

I want to buy and install iLife 8 but as I have never upgraded to a new version before I don't know how you do this (apart from purchasing it of course).
Step by step, how do you install the disc?
What happens to all my existing and work in progress iMovie and iDVD projects? Can I continue to work on them or should I wait until I have finished them before upgrading?

If you have a book started in iPhoto 6 then you might want to make a backup copy of the library and the application as some book themes are not included in iPhoto 7. iPhoto 7 will continue to work with that theme but if you switch to another to see what it looks like you can't go back. Another approach is to make a copy of the book in iPhoto 6 for backup just in case, select it and type Command-D.
It apperars that the new large hardcover books have printed dust jackets with the cover photo instead of the photo on the hard cover.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Tiger (10.4.11) upgrading to Snow Leopard (10.6) without iLife/iWork

    Hi Guys!
I have just recently ordered Snow Leopard from apple to upgrade my iMac to 10.6 due to my new ipod and Iphone being unable to sync with iTunes.
Now after ordering i have run into a few worries,
-the first being that i am currently running Tiger (10.4.11) and i am not aware of any back-up solutions, can you recommend any?
-Second is that i did not get iLife or iWork, what i understand it that those are applications such as iPhoto and iMovie etc. What i want to know if that if i upgrade to SL will the applications that i have  currently remain there with me being able to access them? Or do i need to back-up the applications as well? Even then will i be able to run them on SL?
-Third is that i have run into phrases such as "Clean Install", and not being used to upgrading i am not very aware of what this means, should i worry about this?

    GuyWhoWantsHelp wrote:
Is iLife necessary to the upgrade, will the applications i currently have still be there when i install snow leopard?
The "retail Snow Leoaprd" does not have the "extras".  SL disks that came with systems had "Disk 2" with applications.

Im not quite sure what you mean by this. Does this mean i have to wipe the hard drive before installation?
If you simply upgrade the existing Tiger install, the SL system changes may or may not replace everything necessary.  Some user report success, others report very odd irregularities.
Some have no choice but to erase the partition and start with just SL, then use MigrationAssistant to copy user-specific settings.

  • What is the new 'plug-in failure' with iWeb videos?

I'm trying to update my iWeb 2.0.4 into the current 3.0.4, and I download all the fixes, and the last version doesn't allow an upgrade... do I just need to go to a store and get a disc?  When I try to find iWeb as an app, it disappears between iWork and iLife... what is happening?

there was a paid update between 2.0 & 3.0 your best bet to find the 3.0 version is going to be Amazon or ebay I do believe both box sets iLife '09 & iLife '11 have iWeb 3.0

  • Since iDvd is no longer supplied with Lion, what is best to use to burn to dvd for TV?

Since iDvd is no longer supplied with Lion, what is the best product to use to burn to dvd for TV from iMac?  Is there a free solution?

Thank you very much for the link.  I'm in the process of evaluating the trial version of a couple of products other than iDvd.  Since iDvd does not have a trial, I was wondering if you could answer a couple of questions.  Once I'm done, I plan on putting up the resluts of what I've found.  Work is very busy this week, so I probably won't get a chance to work on this much until next week.
Anyway, I'm importing movies from my Sony Handycam DCR-TRV20.  I've used iMovie to perform the download from the camcorder (the other products don't support this).  The other products can work directly on the imported .dv files without having to export things from iMovie as a .mov file.  I have not had time to see if there is a quality difference between a burned DVD with .dv clips vs. .mov imported from iMovie.  So my questions regarding iDvd are as follows:
Can iDvd work directly on .dv files, or do you need to import .mov from iMovie?
If iDvd can work with these files directly, is it easy to do things such as clip them and do affects on them?
Is there a quality difference when viewing a burned DVD if .dv files were used vs. imported .mov files?
Since I have later versions of the iLife products than what comes packaged in the iLife that contains iDvd, can you install only iDvd in what is purchased from Amazon?
Thank you very much is you know the answer to any of these questions.

  • How do I get iWeb without buying iLife '08?

    Hi everyone,
I've never posted here before, so forgive me of any ignnorance I might have. My computer (a PowerBook G4), was given to me by someone else and I don't have the original installation disks, and somehow iWeb was not installed on it. I have iPhoto, iMovie, Garage Band, etc., you get the idea, but no iWeb!! And I'm trying to start a small business so I really need it to get a website up. However, I've tried to download it from this site a million times, but they're all updates, not the original application, so my computer won't accept them. I'd have no problem springing for the software, but I've heard such bad things about iLife '08 and I can no longer get iLife '06. What to do?? I'd appreciate any insights anyone can give me.

You will not hear anything bad about iLife '08 except for iMovie but there's free remedy to this too (legal not illegal). I'd really recommend you to buy iLife '08 (doing it the legal way).
    Regards,
    Cédric

  • What is the best way to make video and audio the same lengths for posting on Web?

YouTube recommends doing this to avoid sync problems. Maybe it will also make my videos run more smoothly. I'm talking here about random pauses I see in my movies on YouTube, not the uniform stuttering problem which I pretty much solved by redoing the movie at 30 fps instead of 24 fps. (Original is 18 fps Super 8 movie film.)
Anyway, there is no sound during my titles. The soundtrack starts about 17 seconds in, and ends when the ending titles begin. So what's the best way to add silent audio? The best I can figure is to take some existing sound, put it in where the titles are, and turn the volume down to zero. Seems real workaround-ish, so to speak, to me. It seems to work. I even cranked it up on headphones to make sure there was no residual noice. But I'm curious if there's a better way? No biggie if not.
    Thanks.

I should have included the following:
1.) Why can't I make a silent project in GarageBand? I have to instead find a project with a long enough song, make an "iLife preview" of it (see (2) below), copy it from the iMovie Music and Sound Effects browser to the end of the movie, and then open the audio panel and turn the volume to zero. And all this so that video websites don't get confused by a soundtrack that starts in mid-movie.
2.) Why do I have to "render" them by the following process: Double-click a song in the iMovie Music and Sound Effects browser. You get a dialog box saying "The project "The Great Race" cannot be used because it was not prepared with an iLife preview. Would you like to open "The Great Race" in GB so you can save it with an iLife preview?" What I don't understand is why this new thing was introduced and why I have to do it via iMovie.

  • ILife '08 re-install on Mac Pro that came with Leopard

I got a Mac Pro in November 2007, and it came with iLife '08.
The machine booted up into Tiger, but it came with a Leopard DVD, so I installed that.
Now I need to install iLife again because iPhoto got corrupted.
My machine did not come with any media except for the Leopard DVD, which is just a Leopard upgrade DVD.
Despite its name, it doesn't require a copy of Tiger to be present, but at the same time it does not have iLife either.
What am I supposed to do? My Mac came with iLife '08 for free, so how do you get the files to install it again?

I found a set of Tiger CDs from my older Mac Pro, and I can use that.
    Nevermind.

  • Upgrading MacBook Tiger to SL and iLife 09

I currently have a MacBook running Tiger and I also have the Family pack of iLife 09. What is the correct procedure for upgrading Tiger to SL and iLife 09? It is not clear to me that I can upgrade to SL with out using the Box Set?

If you don't need iLife '09 and iWork '09, the least expensive route from Tiger to Snow Leopard is to buy a copy of Leopard and the Snow Leopard upgrade from a dealer. Amazon has Leopard for $95.99 and the Snow Leopard upgrade for $25.00. That's cheaper than the $149.99 Amazon sells the Box Set for, though the Box Set would be a better deal if you want iWork even though you already have iLife.
    Regards.

  • How do I install iMovie 06 with iLife 09 ?

I have installed iLife 09 on my MacBook. I don't like the new iMovie version and want to go back to iMovie06 but keep the rest of iLife 09. I don't even care if iMovie 09 is still there, I won't use it. I have the install disks for iLife 06 from my old computer. How do I do the installation? Do I first need to remove iMovie 09? Or do I have to remove all of iLife 09 and re-install all but iMovie 09 after installing iLife 06? What is the easiest path for me? I want all of iLife 09 except I want iMovie 06 in place of (or in addition to) iMovie 09.
    Thanks!

    Welcome to Apple discussions.
Many people use iMovie 06 with iLife 09 & 08
There are 2 ways to do this.
    1) Use Pacifist to install just iMovie 06 from the iLife 06 disk.
Pacifist is an application for Mac OS X that opens up .pkg installer packages, .dmg disk images, .zip, .tar, .tar.gz, .tar.bz2, .pax, and .xar archives, and more, and lets you install individual files out of them. This is useful if you need to install just one file out of a package instead of the entire package.
    2) Delete iLife 09, install all of iLife 06, then re-install iLife 09.
When iLife 09 is installed, all of the old iLife applications are automatically deleted EXCEPT iMovie 06, because Apple WANTS you to have it.
I like method number 1 myself.
    I use both iMovie 06 and iMovie 09 (iMovie 06 about 90%, iMovie 09 about 10%).

  • ILife '05 updated to '06?

Since they are releasing a new iMac with a new version of iLife will those of us who have an older iMac (i got my in August 05) get software updates to bring our version of iLife update with what was just released? Or will I have to go out and buy it?

They do upgrades for iLife '06 though:
    http://www.apple.com/ilife/uptodate/
Just to add: As I said before, if you bought a computer in the qualifying period that didn't have iLife '06 you can get a reduced rate upgrade.
This iLife offer is valid only for US and Canadian customers, however.
This offer is good only in the United States (50 states and the District of Columbia) and Canada, and valid only in accordance with the terms set forth on this certificate.

  • I have the updated version of ilife however i cannot idvd anywhere on my mac. How do i get idvd?

Please help, i cannot convert my imovie to dvd as my system cannot locate idvd even though al my software is up to date and i do have the latest version of ilife??

What model of Mac do you have and what system can preinstalled on it?  If it was either Lion or Mt. Lion iDVD will not be available.  Where did you get the latest iLife apps from?  If iDVD originally came preinstalled on your Mac you can use the disks that came with it to reinstall just iDVD. The disk may look like one of these:
If not and you have to purchase an iLife disc in order to obtain the iDVD application remember that the iLife 11 disc only provides  themes from iDVD 5-7.  The Software Update no longer installs the earlier themes when starting from the iLIfe 11 disk nor do any of the iDVD 7 updaters available from the Apple Downloads website contain them.
Currently the only sure fire way to get all themes is to start with the iLife 09 disc:
This shows the iDVD contents in the iLife 09 disc via Pacifist:
You then can upgrade from iDVD 7.0.3 to iDVD 7.1.2 via the updaters at the Apple Downloads webpage.

  • The many benefits of the iLife 5 Suite are great.

I have read too many threads from those who choose to criticize the limits of the iLife products.
Someone recently complained that iMovie only had three audio tracks.
For at least 98% of the people using the product, this is one more than they would ever use.
Maybe it’s time we all review what the iLife suite of products are and what they offer. For about $50 (free with a new Mac) we get five great pieces of software with wide ranging capabilities.
The iLife suite is intended to be an entry level grouping of products designed to give the majority of individuals the ability to learn and use many different functions and capabilities the MAC computer has to offer.
By chance, and luck on our parts, it happens to be a set of extremely powerful tools approaching the professional level in most cases.
Example: iMovieHD is great for those individuals who want to process videos of family events such as ball games, birthday parties, a day at the beach, etc. It offers more than enough power to perform these many task and very efficiently I might add. I even use it for marketing events for selling land. Yes, it is sufficient for some commercial use.
But it was not designed for creating ‘Speilberg’ movies.
If that need exists then Apple also makes a very nice professional movie making software called Final Cut Pro.
The same goes for iDVD 5 which is tremendous for it’s intended use but can be had in a professional version called DVD Pro.
GarageBand2 has a big brother as well in Soundtrack Pro.
Is iLife perfect? Of course not - what is?
iPhoto, iTunes, iMovieHD, iDVD and Garage Band offer many features that cannot be found on other computers and at a very reasonable price. I will upgrade each time a new iLife suite is offered.
    Harold

I have recently used the iLife bundle to process footage on the 3rd birthday party of my friends' son (my first production). I used iMovie to edit the footage, added audio tracks from iTunes, dropped a few photos from iPhoto on the drop zones of iDVD, added a slideshow to the project as well. Boy, my friends were amazed when I played the DVD before them (they were not mac users).
With such limited effort one need to spend on it (time and money), the output iLife gives is, what Jobs likes to say in keynote, phenomenal.
