G4 iMac 800mhz (OS X 10.2.8) won't boot

Hi,
My old G4 iMac running OS X 10.2.8 is having problems booting up. When you turn it on it boots to the grey screen and gets stuck there. What can I do? The only thing I know which I'm about to try is boot in 'safe mode' by holding down the shift key. Is there any thing else I can try?
Thanks

HI Reelsick Productions!
What size is the Hard Drive, and how much space is available?
How much RAM is installed, and is it original or added?
What peripherals do you have connected? A keyboard, mouse, printer, external drive or modem, router, etc?
What happened between the last time the iMac started successfully, and when it didn't?
Have you made any changes, like upgrading the system, updated or installed any applications or programs, etc?
Have there been any unusual occurences, like freezes, crashes, power outages, etc?
Are you able to startup from the system install disc to run Disk Repair?
Is the iMac shutdown overnight, or does it run 24/7?
Have you ever run any routine Maintenance procedures?

  • Imac startup disc is full and it won't boot up.  what can I do?

My imac's startup disc is full and it won't boot up...thanks to my daughter uploading a million pictures.  What do I do to fix this?  We do have an external harddrive as well, but things haven't been moved over in a while.

You'll need to have access to another Mac.  Connected the two with a Firewire cable and boot your iMac into Target Disk Mode,  Transferring files between two computers using FireWire.  Now you'll have access to your iMac's boot drive where you can download the necessary files to an external HD that is formatted OS X Extended (journaled) and then delete from the boot drive to give you a minimum of 10-15 GB of free space.
One can move both your iPhoto and iTunes libraries to the EHD to free up space on the boot drive and run the libraries from there.  However, it must be formatted as I described above.

  • Is there an emergency eject hole on the newer iMacs. disk stuck in drive and computer won't boot.

Is there an emergency eject hole on the newer iMacs? I have a disk stuck in the drive and the computer won't boot. Need to get this disk out to load repair disk.

If you are getting nothing at all you should take it in for repairs.

  • Upgraded my iMac 2011's Memory and now it won't boot properly

    Hi,
So, today i upgraded the memory of my 27" 2011 edition iMac, the ram i used is two sticks of 1333mhz DDR3 4GB ram, to upgrade from the conventional 4GB to 12 GB as my iMac was struggling due to lack of memory when loading certain programmes. I installed the Ram fine and had no issues with that, I then booted my iMac up and the ram had registered fine, no problem. I then opened up google and this also worked fine but when i opened other programmes or at least, I tried to, the unit just crashed and restarted itself, well.. attempted to. Now, whenever I try to turn the unit on it gets to the apple and the loading bar, loads 3/4 of the way and then doesn't boot and restarts the process. I have tried to remove the RAM and just use the original but the problem still persists which i'm presuming is due to the iMac believing its running 12gb when I put the original 4GB back in as obviously that's what previously registered. I've seen one of these posts from a couple of years ago but it didn't get answered so if anyone has any thoughts as to how to fix this problem it would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance!

Do you have a link to Amazon RAM?
Macs are very, VERY PICKY about the RAM specs they need.
Most common electronics retailers and wholesalers do not usually have the correct RAM and specs Mac computers need.
Here are the correct specs for RAM your 2011 Mac needs.
32 GB (Actual) 16 GB (Apple)
    Memory Slots
    4 - 204-pin PC3-10600 (1333 MHz) DDR3 SO-DIMM
Also, the timing latency has to be low...9ms or less.
Here is known good and compatible RAM from OWC (macsales.com)

  • IMAC will work with 3GB RAM but won't boot with $GB RAM

I have a 20inch iMAC and it came with 1 GB RAM. I received 4 GB of RAM and did the upgrade. But I found that unless I had the original 1 GB RAM in either slot, the computer would turn on the fan, but never the screen and it would never boot. If I put the original 1 GB RAM in one slot and one of the new 2 GB RAM in another slot, it would come up and recognize 3 GB of RAM. I tried out both my 2 GB RAM and they both worked (to rule out bad RAM). But once I had both 2 GB RAM in the computer I run into trouble. This computer supports 4 GB of RAM according to the book and the new RAM says it is the right kind (Kingston 4 GB kit PC2-6400 for 800/667/533 MHz. I need the 667, so I should be good to go. Can you replace the original 1 GB or does that original RAM have something to allow the computer to boot? I have the latest MAC OS X updates....

Okay I did get around this and got my iMAC working. It cost me an extra $92 dollars, but it was still cheaper than buying the 4 GB from the APPLE store.
I exchanged my 800 MHZ backward compatible to 667 MHZ Kingston 4 GB kit for a PNY 4 GB kit that is meant for 667 MHZ and not just backward compatible.

I installed this and my computer came right up and says it has 4 GB of memory when I do the Apple->About this computer. It seems to work fine now.

  • IMac with Yosemite 10.10.2 installed, won't boot at all.

    Good day.
I own an iMac 27" (late 2011), and recently I've upgraded from Mavericks to Yosemite. It ran perfectly for the past 2 months.
A week ago, I was watching a video clip on QuickTime, when my iMac suddenly froze, and the screen went completey white and unresponsive. I waited a couple of minutes to make sure that nothing is happening, and then I turned my computer off then on. The problem is that my iMac refused to reach the login window. It showed the progress bar, and when it reaches about 1/3 of the loading phase, the screen goes completely white, then a few seconds later it reboots by itself and the same problem occurs again in an infinite loop.
I tried to boot into recovery mode (cmd+r), and also (option+r)  but it never worked, it continues booting normally then gets stuck again.
I tried to hold shift when booting to enter safe mode, but again nothing happens and it continues to boot normally and then it gets stuck.
I tried to hold D when booting, but nothing happens. I tried the (cmd+s) and tried to fix the volume, but that didn't fix my problem.
I tried holding Alt when booting, it gave me the option to enter the recovery disk 10.10.2 with the option to choose a wifi network. When I click on the recovery disk icon, it continues to boot normally as before and eventually gets stuck again.
I tried to run the internet recovery mode, and when the whole progress bar was done, the screen went completely white again and I couldn't reach the disk utility window that should have appeared once the internet recovery mode is fully downloaded.
Then suddenly, when I tried to restart my computer, it finally reached the login window and the iMac booted successfully.
It kept running smoothly for 3 days, and again yesterday night, while watching another video clip on QuickTime, the same thing happened, and now I'm stuck again with the same problem.
I tried all of the steps again that I did before, but the problem still persist.
What seems to be the problem? and why can't I access the recovery disk or safe mode? and why doesn't the internet recovery mode takes me to the disk utility window once it finishes preloading?
Thank you in advance for your help, as I urgently need to fix my iMac.

Thank you for your reply rkaufmann87 for your reply, but this is not a fix for my problem. My iMac does turn on and my screen is working perfectly. The problem is that it reaches 1/3 of the loading bar of Yosemite and freezes. I explained my problem in details in the post above.

  • IMac Won't Boot

    I have a 24" iMac bought in 2007.
It now won't boot up. I suspect it is because the hard drive is so full that it won't reboot.
Is there a way to rectify this without an erase and reinstall?
    I do have Applecare.

    HI,
*"Is there a way to rectify this without an erase and reinstall?"*
    Try booting in Safe Mode
    What is Safe Mode
You might be able to boot so you can move files off the startup disk.
Freeing space on your Mac OS X startup disk
Also, even though you think it might be a disk space issue you should boot from your install disc and run Disk Utility in case there are errors that needs repairing.
Insert your install disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
Go to Installer menu and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
*(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel. It should say: Verified)*
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
When you are finished with DU, from the Menu Bar, select Utilities/Startup Manager.
Select your start up disk and click Restart
While you have the Disk Utility window open, look at the bottom of the window. Where you see Capacity and Available. *Make sure there is always 10% to 15% free disk space*
You can use your install disc to perform and Erase and Install. Go here for help with that.

  • IMac won't boot up after Lion 10.7.4 update

I made the mistake of updating my mid-2010 27" iMac earlier this week and now it won't boot up. It gets to the gray screen with the Apple logo and the progress bar to finalise the update, but the computer shuts down about 25% of the way in. Fortunately I could boot up to the recovery HD and was able to copy my files over to an external hard drive.
I have a Genius Bar appt today to get it looked at, but wanted to post this in case anyone else had this problem.

Try turning off the computer with the power button, then turn it on to allow it to restart.

  • IMac won't boot from HDD - stays at gray screen

Quite simply, the iMac that we have in the house won't boot. It just gets stuck at the gray screen with the apple and the loading wheel (which is moving, so it's still not "frozen" per sey, but it sits there for going on 20 minutes). We have tried booting it in Safe Mode, which only succeeds in displaying the loading bar, but the computer still gets stuck. Single-User Mode works, but the fsck -fy command says that there are no errors. Booting from a Disk also does not work - we got it to get to the Setup Manager, but choosing the disk just freezes the computer. So we can't get into the Disk Utility. Loading in Verbose mode, the commands stop in the middle of "Running fsck on the boot volume", specifically "Launchcti: dubios permissions on file (skipping): /etc/mach_init.d"
The operating system is 10.6 something we believe, but we can't find out because we can't start up the computer. It is at least 10.6, if not newer.
Any ideas what's wrong and what could be done to fix it? We don't know a huge amount about Macs (although my brother knows a bit more about unix-based systems than I do). Any help would be appreciated!

Are you saying you haven't been backing up? If so and you have performed all the steps in the letter and reached the final step that says to do an erase and install then yeah you will lose all your data!
If you have not been backing up I hate to say it but this will be an extremely valuable lesson on why you should. That being said I'd also recommend bookmarking and reading the following 3 MacWorld articles on backing up, IMHO the common thread is not only should you be backing up but that you should do redundant backups.
    Backup Plan I
    Backup Plan II
    Backup Plan III
Personally I use Time Machine and Super Duper on 2 seperate EHDs to backup daily.

  • I want to upgrade my ( iMAC 800Mhz Power PC G4 &  iBOOK 700Mhz PC G3)

    Hello!
I want to upgrade if possible over 1GB ? my now slow computer ( iMAC 800Mhz Power PC G4 ) and a ( iBOOK 700Mhz Power PC G3 ) which I don't think I'm confident enough to change the internal memory but the user memory I think I can attempt!
So I'd like to know what type of ram or "model numbers" I should be looking for if I what to upgrade my empty DIMMO /J22 slot to a 1GB ?
Keeping in mind I still have a 256GB factory standard ram in place (256 SDRAM PC133U-333)
i.e. how many pins "184 0r 200" do I need for for my model?
I seen lots off ram types like "Kingston PC2700, 333MHZ DDR 1GB memory "
PC2700 333MHZ is this the model number I should be looking for to upgrade to 1.256?
and for my ( iBOOK 700Mhz Power PC G3 ) is this also able to be upgraded to beyond the the original ibook specs just like it is suggested for the iMAC? which I also have only the original 256 SDRAM and a empty ram slot! again I not sure what model or type of ram I should be looking for here? or what is the max. it can be upgraded to with the new high density ram everyone is talking about!
I know you guy's must seem to answer these by now simple question for you! am sorry I don't have something more challenging for you but I do need your help with this one please!
since you've already done this and seem to know what your doing! I would like to ask for your help or anyone who know the answers to my questions ?
    Thank you in advance!

Unfortunatley, only imac models above 1ghz can take module of 1GB. your model can accomadate 512mb bringing it up to 768Mb which will make a decent improvement.
go to crucial.com and input your imac model to get the right type for your system. it's also best to buy from mac friendly companies as some cheaper modules wont work
    best of luck

I looking a compatible tv tuner for a iMac 800mhz, can anyone help?

Elgato's EyeTV 400, no longer produced, worked with iMac 800 Mhz.    Just a note, your machine is a bare minimum for video conversion to compressed formats.  You may get choppy video.  I would seriously consider upgrading to at least an iMac G5 1.8 Ghz, if not an Intel Core2Duo iMac.

  • Got a used iMac 800Mhz, trying to upgrade OS

    Hey all,
Got hooked up with a used iMac 800Mhz, 256 RAM (for free :-p), and am trying to upgrade the OS to 10.4.x It won't seem to let me install the new OS, it simply tells me that I cannot install. I'm trying to use Disk Utility to format the hard drive, starting from scratch but the options to erase the drive is unavailable. I am wondering if there is some other way to re-format the HD so I can pop OS 10.4 on there.
    Thanks!

Yes, that's correct. The OEM discs that come with other machines are usually machine specific and may not be able to boot or install on different Mac models. The retail version of Tiger, however, supports all Macs that can run Tiger provided the machine meets the system requirements.

  • Tagert mode OS from MacBook Core 2 Duo to iMac 800MHz G4?

I am having problems with the OS in my iMac 800MHz. I have no sound, Mail won't start, and Safari quits often.
My question is - My son has a MacBook Core 2 Duo with OS 10.4.10 running. If I put my iMac in target mode and put the OS DVD in his player and load the OS onto my iMac, will the version for the MacBook work in the iMac?

I have repaired the permissions and volumns with Disk Utility, TT4 and Onyx. I have only 6GB remaining on the 120GB HD and have begun to trash files and apps and emptied the trash. I have two ext FWHDs and I am working towards completely clearing one of them and reinitializing it. Then, I guess, I will need to purchase another copy of OS 10.4.10 and begin anew. I was hoping to wait for the new OS due out soon.
At this pt I can only boot in safe mode(while holding down the shift key for two minutes or so before the blue screen appears). I often get a kernel panic.
I noticed in one of the discussions that memory may cause this type problem. This all started after I upgraded my unaccessable user memory to 512MB and changed a dead DVD drive. Could one of these changes be my problem? If so, is there a way to detect the cause?
