G4 imac problem- starts them dies!
I have managed to get the machine to boot , then before I can get into any settings it switches off. I can boot it into target mode OK.If I try to network boot it to reimage it won't make it through to the image select screen, any thoughts guys?
G4 imac Mac OS X (10.4.9) Primary (elementary) school machine.
If you have the original iMac G4 machine-specific Apple Hardware Test disc,
you could try booting from that to see if tests there generate error-codes and then
note these for further investigation. This volume may be on a part of the install/restore DVD.
If the machine has a Combo or SuperDrive and shipped with a system on DVD media.
If not, the AHT would be on a separate CD; these boot the iMac.
Be sure to isolate the machine from a network before testing it; no hubs,
extra ethernet or USB stuff, etc should be attached.
Does the machine startup OK from a bootable installer OSX disc#1 and if so
have you tried using Disk Utility's "repair disk" -- run it more than once -- and
also you could run "repair disk permissions" but this probably won't help.
This disc would probably be the retail OSX installer disc#1; to access
Disk Utility from the Installer's drop-down menu. The Apple Hardware Test
would be on a disc or volume in the machine's original software packet.
There could be an error in the startup volume; so it won't fully boot. This would
still allow one to access the hard disk drive from FireWire TDM.
This is to say, there is a chance there is a corruption on the hard drive or
maybe the drive itself is on its way out. A third-party disk utility could be
of help in some cases to see if the boot volume directory can be fixed;
but not all disk utiliites are created equal.
I'm sure there is more to it than this; but these are some of my preliminary
thoughts on the generalized situation as described. They may be off...!
If the machine suffered a power disruption during use, could be
the Power Management Unit (PMU) would need to be reset.
The iMacG4 has specific instructions, if that were the case, to
try and restore function to the computer through a reset of this.

I can't boot my IMac. I loaded OSX and first mail then contacts start acting up.
I shut down and now the iMac won't boot. When I press the power botton it comes on, I see Apple logo, swirl and a bar which saw loading for a few seconds and then shuts it self off.
HELP!Try an SMC reset first, and if that doesn't help, follow up with a PRAM reset:

If you're still having problems try a 'Safe Boot' - restart holding down the shift key until you see a grey progress bar. Once booted restart as normal from the Apple menu.
If that doesn't work, boot into the Recovery HD, launch Disky Utility and check the Macintosh HD using the 'repair disk' option. If anything gets fixed click on repair disk again until you get a clean pass, then restart as normal from the Apple menu.
To start into the Recovery HD restart holding down Command + r

IMac G5 tries to start and dies after spinning cog for a minute
iMac G5 tries to start and dies after spinning cog for a minute
I did this;
1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
3. Click the First Aid tab.
4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk.
the result was.
the 'permissions' are sometimes wrong, but they repair
the hard drive is either repaired or OK
the iMac will then restart and work fine and sometimes shut down and restart OK
after replacing the Hard Drive I actually thought I had fixed it and went to bed late but happy,
on waking in the morning, however I was not so happy it fired up and then died after dong -> apple logo -> spinning cog -> dead!!
I would be grateful for any help
Thanks
PeteHi Miriam,
Thanks yes,
here we go -- after running disc utilities it tells me directory OK and disk OK (or something like that) When I replaced the Hard Drive, I started 'fresh' erased/formatted the hard drive (new Seagate Barracuda 7200 500GB) and it has just got 'tiger' on it (and upgraded to whatever it is now I think I remember 4.11, I can't tell at the moment as I have got the back off) I didn't transfer any data I just took the old drive (Seagate 160GB) out and stuck the new one in.
I've just changed the battery (I didn't really think it would work, but I was still hopeful and I'd bought the battery anyway) I did the LED thing, the internal power button thing, and the resetting the SMU thing (with crossed fingers and bated breath) but -- so I'm thinking is it the power supply? I read some of Jim's weighty, but worthy tome and resolved to remove the power supply and have a look. On opening it up, it does look as though, one (at least) of the capacitors has 'blown' (by the way, just in case I sound like I know what I'm talking about, I don't of course, I'm just quoting Jim's words;-) I'd love to send you a picture of the inside of the power supply showing what I believe to be a 'blown' capacitator (and I'm going to try to send one to Jim as I think it might be useful to him and others. can I attach a photo in any way or would you like to send me your email address <Edited by Moderator>
Thanks
Pete
PS it's still 'weird' to me, why it starts and runs well, when started from tiger (or whatever) and then starts or restarts from the Hard Drive unless I leave it a few hours and come back and try to start it
again? wow it's late nearly 4.00am here in london UK. -
My wireless keyboard no longer connects with my iMac since changing the batteries. It now shows as not connected, not paired and not configured. A friend recently connected his iPad to the iMac and since then the problem started. Any ideas to resolve this?
a friend told me that he wants my os x cd for my macbook pro to upgrade his imac.

Stated above, I have issues with Facebook and my iPad 2. I have updated the operating system, but the problem started before that. Can't click on like or enter comments. Problem started about a week ago. Sent email to Facebook and they responded that they don't answer individual emails but read them. Lots help that was.
Facebook is basically broken, at least as far as it pertains to mobile browsers. THey changed something in their coding and now mobile browsers don't work with facebook. ANd their app, well their app has been less than stellar for a long time.
Unfortunately, it's up to facebook to fix things, not apple. All you can do is find work arounds. Look for third party apps, I have one called Facely HD which seems to work reasonably well (even though it does seem to not see all posts). There may be others that work better. You can also simply not access facebook on your mobile until they fix it.
It's all on them and users can only be patient or find other ways to work around it. -
My iMac Version 10.6.8 has problems starting up. I often get a white screen without the apple icon. Then I must turn the computer off and restart. Restarting will usually bring up the Apple icon and the start screen. What could be causing this? And how can I resolve this issue. My Mac is still under warranty, I've had it just 7 months.
Reset the NVRAM/PRAM and Reset the SMC.

My problem started after installing "smartsync app" which is supposed to sync my phone with the profilepage photos of my friends in facebook. All my apps crashed after using them for awhile. While using my apps, they will black out after a little while and the phone returns to the starting page. I have removed the smartsync app but my phone still behaves the same way. At the same time the dates that accompany my messages changed to another language. How can these be rectified?
Eek. Sounds like something in the app caused some serious software issues. You can try a hard reset, but I'd imagine you're probably going to have to do an iTunes restore to get it running right again.

Numbers opening all files in iMac on start up
When I start Numbers on my 2010 iMac upon start up Numbers open evey spreadsheet stored on the computer. Anyone else experienced this problem? I can't find any setting to toggle this off.
Any sugestions greatly appreciated.
Cheers
RichNot sure what might cause that.
Work arounds -
To close them all quickly, hold down the Option key while clicking the close button (red bubble) i one of the windows.
Make sure they are all closed before quitting Numbers.
Quit Numbers before shutting down or restarting your Mac.
Go to System Preferences > General and in the Recent Items section uncheck the item "Restore windows...". -
Hi, I've had my iMac for about 7 months and in that time I have already had to replace the hard drive (thankfully under warranty), though now I'm getting more problems. Just this morning I tried starting it up; it seemed to be taking longer than usual on the grey screen and spinning grey snowflake thing. A bit later the fan turned on at full power making an alighty noise. A minute later it stopped, then went to the blue screen and started up as normal. It seems to be doing this every time I start up now. Also, none of my startup applications automatically start - I have to manually start them. The iMac doesnt recognise that I have JBL creature speakers plugged in nor my iMic with headphones attached. I have repaired permissions and verified the disk and it all came out fine. I hope I dont have to replace the hard drive again as it is way past its warranty and I'm broke! Thankfully I have a full backup, though I dont want to have to use it. Any suggestions ?
If you look here, you will find a list of things the PRAM deals with. Apparently one of these things was not working properly or was corrupt.
Hope this helps,
Miriam

Purchased a new Apple TV and the remote double clicks each time I press the button. It worked fine during set up and for the first two days. I have since moved it and this problem started. Restarted, reset, unplugged, changed remotes, no change. Latest software update. This is really annoying. iPhone remote app works just fine. Any suggestions?
That's one of the weird things.. it recognizes it maybe 10% of the time. And usually, only after I do the two-button reset. Problem is.. since it won't charge above 2%, anytime I try to do a restore or anything like that using iTunes, my device shuts off and I lose whatever progress I'd made.
So, an update... after reading through a bunch of similar complaints (there are literally 1000's of them so there's NO WAY this isn't somehow ios7 related, thanks a lot APPLE ) I decided to try a restore in recovery mode. After 3 hours and several disconnections... I ended up having to just set it up as a new iPad, as the restore did nothing. Weirdly though... as I was doing the restore in recovery mode.. I noticed I'd gotten up to a 10% charge.. higher than it's been since September, so after setting it up as a new device, I turned it off and plugged it in using the wall charger. 2 hours later and I was up to 38%. Still not great, as my iPad, before ios7 could've fully charged twice in the amount of time it took for me to now get 28% more of a charge. And that's with a fully cleaned out device.. so that really ***** and I'm now more confused than ever.
But I'm gonna leave it overnight charging and see what I come up with tomorrow. Sadly, when I paid $600 for it in February, I never expected to have to play "wait and see" with it... -
56 day Time Machine backups. and 27" iMac problems.
56 day Time Machine backups. and 27” iMac problems.
I have a problem and its driving me to mad. I wish to backup my iMac to a separate hard drive, When I start TimeMachine backup there is a window that appears ,I switch on Time Machine , select my Verbatim separate hard drive which I have partitioned into three section , one called time machine backups, and click ‘backup now’ the process starts by stating ‘436GB of 500GB available’, Preparing Backup’ and this stays there for ages and then when it does start to backup states backing up 234 byts of 28.3 GB . I left my IMac on for fifteen hours and it still read the same , 234 byts of 28.3 GB also at one time showed ‘time remaining’ as 56 Days. It will not allow me to reformat the Verbatim and will not allow me to eject the backup hard drive. On disc repair it says things are OK, disk partitions are OK. Could I have damaged the Verbatim Hard drive when I previously forced a shut down as it was taking so long and would not eject theVerbatim hard drive. Also Just recently it has been impossible to shut down the iMac as ‘Messages’ is working and won't even force quit. I switch of at the mains. Please help.
Equipment.
iMac 27” 3.2 GHz intel core i5 [four months old]
Running OS X Yosemite
Verbatim [SamsungHD] [three years old]
Partitioned in Three , Formatted as Mac OS Extended [Journaled]
connected by USB 2 Cable
Thanks.First you should NEVER EVER partition a Time Machine or any other backup drive for anythings else but backup. This is likely why you are having issues, buy yourself a high quality EHD such as an OWC (www.macsales.com) Mercury Elite Pro, format it correctly and make that your Time Machine backup HD.

Problems starting Replication on large databases - SQL 2012
Hi all,
I have been battling SQL Server for a week trying to get replication up and running, now I realize that most probably I am doing something wrong and I hope that one of you can help pointing me in the right direction.
I want to start replication of a big (180GB) database in my lab environment and every time the end result is errors of the type "The row was not found at the Subscriber when applying the replicated command. (Source: MSSQLServer, Error number: 20598)".
There are more than one database to be replicated and the smaller ones (<= 4GB) have started without problems, a medium database of 21GB had one similar error and has been running for a few days since I found and inserted the missing data in the subscriber
DB.
A couple of facts:
- I have set up the distributor as a remote distributor since the publishers are mirrored databases.
- I assume the distributor setup is OK since all the replicated databases are taking the same 'path' and the smaller ones are working.
- The distributor and the subscriber are set up on the same server.
- All in all the following procedure takes about 3.5-4 hours.
- The database is running in Full Recovery mode
- All log backups on the publisher are turned off for the duration.
Here's what I do:
On the publisher
Create the publication and add all the articles
use [Zaragoza]

If you are missing any details do not hesitate to ask, I will gladly provide all the details I have.
Have a great day
DSHi Ashwin,
I have tried a few things these last couple of days and here's where I'm at.
I looked through the publisher database for the missing row so I could just copy it over but the row was nowhere to be found. After talking to the developers I found out that the table in question has a clean-up job that deletes records when they are finished
- OK, no problem, the replication should take care of that.
When I then look at the trace from the Distributor I find a bunch of records where the ID of the missing row is used. However, I find it peculiar that the replication first does updates to a record, then deletes it only to continue doing updates afterwards.
A sample from the Trace will explain better:
The SPs are
sp_MSupd_dboMessageDialog => This SP tries to do the failing UPDATE on the table, the second to last parameter is the RowId in the table (1075152)
sp_MSdel_dboMessageDialog => This SP tries to DELETE from the table, the only parameter is the RowId in the table (1075152)
There is one other SP in the replication of this article (table) and it is called sp_MSins_dboMessageDialog and it should be used for inserting records into the table. However it is never called.

Correct me if I'm wrong but this seems a bit weird. Why don't I see any INSERT to create the row again after the DELETE?
For the time being, and since this is a test system, I added the parameter "-SkipErrors 20598" to the Distribution Agent and restarted the agent. The replication started by skipping 20 records with that error and then continuing to work fine, as
suspected. I will have to verify with the developers and testers to see if all the data is still available.
Hopefully you will have some great insight into this matter and be able to explain what is happening.
Cheers!

Problems starting WLS 7 server ... checkLicense NullPointerException
Hi there,
We have a clustered environment running WebLogic Server 7.0 Service Pack 4. In our cluster we're running two WLS instances essentially as webservers, to serve up static content.
Starting and stopping the WLS instances is done using scripts written by a group of now-departed developers (we are not using NodeManager).
The problem that we're having is that the "webserver" instances are very difficult to start up, and may require seven or eight attempts to start properly. Most of the time, we see the following NullPointerException in the server log:
====================================================
<9-Nov-04 12:36:30 EST PM> <Notice> <WebLogicServer> <000360> <Server started in RUNNING mode>
<9-Nov-04 12:36:30 EST PM> <Emergency> <WebLogicServer> <000209> <ListenThread.run() failed: java.lang.NullPointerException
java.lang.NullPointerException
at weblogic.t3.srvr.ListenThread.checkLicense(ListenThread.java:595)
at weblogic.t3.srvr.ListenThread.run(ListenThread.java:333)
>
<9-Nov-04 12:36:30 EST PM> <Emergency> <WebLogicServer> <000210> <The WebLogic Server is no longer listening for connections. You should probably restart it.>
====================================================
If WebLogic was having a hard time finding the license.bea file, I would expect that something more user-friendly than a NullPointerException would occur. Also, a simple problem with locating the license file doesn't really explain why the server eventually does come up properly, despite the fact that it can sometimes take many attempts.
Unfortunately, since these servers are running in production we don't have the luxury to start and stop them at will to perform testing.
Does anyone have any hints as to what might be causing this issue? Any advice would be much appreciated.
Regards,
jodymI'm guess you changed owner of config/mydomain to weblogic? To
confirm - try touching/create a test file in config/mydomain,
i.e. touch mytest.perm;ls -l mytest.perm;rm mytest.perm
You could start weblogic with truss:
truss -t open -o /tmp/truss.out -f "your start command"
Then examine /tmp/truss.out
"Dariusz" <[email protected]> wrote in message news:<3d08b130$[email protected]>...
I have installed WLS in the sun solaris machine and have problems starting up a mydomain
test server. I am getting:
weblogic.management.configuration.ConfigurationException: - with nested exception:
[weblogic.security.internal.FileUtilsException: couldn't create temporary file for
SerializedSystemIni.dat, .new, /config/mydomain - with nested exception:
[java.io.IOException: No such file or directory]]
I am suspecting the problem might be that we have installed it as root and then change
the rights to weblogic. Any pointers are greatly appreciated.
Thanks. -

It sounds as though you’ve had a recent infection and one of your ‘anti’ programs has removed the malware files, or some of them, but missed the entry in the registry, possibly due to an out-dated definitions database. I suggest you, firstly, download and
run the free Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from
http://www.malwarebytes.org/free/ to ensure that you are completely clean. If you then restart the computer and the message is still appearing try one of these, but it is prudent to create a system restore point before you change the registry in (1) below
by going to Control Panel > All Control Panel Items > System > System Protection (in the left pane) > System Protection Tab > Create and make sure you give it a meaningful name.
1. The entry is probably in one of the \Run keys, but as the rascal could be hiding in a number of other ‘autorun’ keys, it’s quicker to search the whole registry. Open a Run window (Windows Logo key+R), type regedit and press Enter. Click Edit > Find and
type the rogue’s name, put ticks in Keys, Values and Data, then click Find Next. When it’s found in the right pane, right-click it and delete it. There should be only one entry but press F3 to continue searching, just to confirm there are no more.
2. If you’re concerned about making registry changes disable the entry using the system configuration utility, but bear in mind that you’re disabling the entry not deleting it as you would in (1) above. Open a Run window (Windows Logo key+R), type msconfig
and press Enter. Go to the Startup Tab and remove the tick alongside the rogue’s name. Click Apply, OK, etc. and restart the computer. When it restarts, put a tick in ‘Don‘t show this again‘ as you‘re effectively doing a selective start up.
Ninety-nine per cent of politicians give the rest a bad name.
