I have a 17" g4 imac 800ghz with a super drive (not a new computer by any stretch)
I'm getting two errors one follows the other when useing toast
first i get Drive reported an error: sense key = blank check
sense code = 0x00
then i get
the drive reported an error sense key = illegal request
sense code = 0x21, 0x02
This is when useing toast
when i try to burn from finder it just says
an error occured while verifying the disk.
this disk may not work.
I've tried a few differen't brands of dvd-r
all with the same problem
i ran techtool and showed all systems were without errors, checked out fine.
i can burnand play cd's and play dvd's with no probles at all.
my gut tells me it's a software issue, but my heart and mind know not what to do.
Help please

Hi mlyons:
Welcome to discussions!
Just to add to the already good advice, are you sure your mac has a SuperDrive needed to burn DVDs? Just beacuse you have iDVD does not mean the mac can burn them.
just a thought-

  • Premiere Elements 9 for Mac won't let me burn a DVD w. menus to DVD

So I am trying to burn a DVD with menus for a clinet. I am pretty new to all of this video editing stuff. I am a photographer that has now branced out.
I am following all of the instructions in the Classroom in a Book but I noticed a couple of things. I do not have the compression option that is shown in the dialogue box where it sets up your burn process.
Now all the encoding goes fine, but when it does get all the way to the end I get the message "internal software error" and then a bunch of mumbo jumbo that it doesn't let me see everything...
I am at a loss of why it is doing this.
    I am using a 2006 MacBook Pro with a 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 4GB memory 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM
I am also running on the most up to date opearting system with Snow Leapord and the computer is completely up to date.
Any help that can be given is very much appreciated.

Oh believe me I keep waaaayyyy more then 50 gigs on my hard drive! As I said I am a professional Photographer so working with computers and all of the software comes easy to me generally speaking. The reasons why this is spitting my discs back at me is baffling.
The red lines only showed up once I started editing the clips because they are some of the clips that I edited, and not on the ones that I left alone because they needed no work done.
The files came in mostly off a Canon 1Ti.
As I said also, I have been follwoing the insturctions in the Clasroom in a book almost to the letter except for the one setting that it said to check off that I did not have that I could not figure out why.
This is the Quality: Fit Contents to available space part of it underneath the status and the presets!
I am truly baffeled and may burn it to my hard drive and then copy it to a disc which it says is also an option.

  • Imac won't read my burned 16x DVD-r's - but reads 8x just fine?!?!

    Hello.
I have been burning CD's and DVD's on my imac PowerPC G5 *(Burner: Pioneer DVD-RW DVR K04F)* for 2 years now with absolutely no problems. Historically, I've used 8x dvd-r's from many different brands and I use Popcorn burning software. Now suddenly, all the electronic stores are carrying only 16x dvd-r's, so I bought some (Maxell), but I don't think my imac likes them. I can burn a movie onto the 16x blank dvd-r using Popcorn and the burning process works fine, process completes without problem, etc. If I put the burned 16x dvd-r disc into my stand alone DVD player on my TV, it will play with no problems, but when I put any of these burned 16x discs back into my imac, the imac will spin it for 10 seconds and then spit it out. However, my imac continues to read/play any of my 8x dvd-r's or commercial dvd's without any problem. Also, no problems with cd-rs.
Anyone have any thoughts on what's happening here? I have cleaned the lens with one of those disc cleaners with the tiny brushes (I ran the cleaning process at least 10 times in a row just to make sure!). I also checked Pioneer's site and I see firmware updates for a handful of their dvd burners but nothing for the DVDR-K04 I have. I called Apple but sadly my AppleCare has expired, and their only advice was to run 'Software Update' but there's nothing in there regarding this issue. So I'm wondering if anyone here might have any suggestions or help?
    Thanks for reading!!

It could depend on what format the content is that is not readable - if you have access to the Windows machine, you could check on the format (and/or know the format if you burned it)? Is it just .jpeg's? Or did you make a slideshow resulting in an mpg2 possibly? In that case, you'd need to buy the MPEG2 Playback Component from the Apple Store (less than $20) because Quicktime can't read that format without the playback component.
Can the DVD be played in a regular DVD player?

Why will it not let you add them?  What specifically are you trying to do, please provide steps.
Frankly, the only thing that should need to be done it restore the iTunes folder from the backup onto the computer.  There is no reason to add or import anything.

  • My iMac won't let me update to OS X v10.6 Snow Leopard.

My iMac won't let me update to OS X v10.6 Snow Leopard. It's year of manufacture is 2007 and when I try to install Snow Leopard it now says that it cannot be upgraded on the iMac. Normally it wouldn't bother me but Chrome and Firefox no longer support 10.5! Do I need a new Mac?

Are you using gray system disks from another mac? Normally that message means you're trying, for example, to use disks delivered with a MacBook to install on an iMac. The system disks are locked to the systems they are delivered with and can't be used on other mac hardware.
If that's the case here, call the online Apple store, which in the US is at 800-MY-APPLE, and order a retail copy of Snow Leopard 10.6.

Hello, what exactly happens when you try?
Os it a Retail Install Disc, or did it come with a different Mac?
Fo you have enough RAM & Free space?
    Snow Leopard/10.6.x Requirements...
    General requirements
       * Mac computer with an Intel processor
        * 1GB of memory (I say 4GB at least, more if you can afford it)
        * 5GB of available disk space (I say 30GB at least)
        * DVD drive for installation
        * Some features require a compatible Internet service provider; fees may apply.

  • I made an imovie project that's over 2 hours so iDVD won't let me burn it onto a DVD.  What do I do?

I made an iMovie project that's over 2 hours long so iDVD won't let me burn it onto a DVD.  What do I do now?

Would I need to switch the disk in the middle of it burning so it can burn the other side
No, you do not flip over the disk.  The dual-layers are both on the same side of the disk. You can't see them, they are just there, and iDVD will do what is necessary if it needs to burn both layers.
You would only flip over a disk if it were a "double-sided" disk.  That's an entirely different kind of disk and it has only one layer on each side.  Those are much older kinds of disks that were used commercially before the advent of dual-layer disks.   I don't know anyone who uses them any more.

  • Itunes 7.6 won't let me burn CDs

I just updated iTunes to version 7.6 yesterday. Immediately following this, i tried to burn a CD. It won't recognize any CD as being blank. It says "checking media" at the top of the iTunes window and then it spits the CD back out telling me to insert a blank disk. I have never had a problem with a previous version of iTunes doing this. Has anyone else had this problem?
I also decided to try downloading iTunes 7.5 to go back to a version that worked, but Apple built into the software some stupid thing that won't let me install an older version. The point of me buying a Mac was to avoid stuff like this. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

OK -- I've put at least 2 hours into fixing this on my machine, and hopefully I can save you the trouble with my story. And if you don't even want to hear the story, skip down to where I've typed "BOTTOM LINE" in all caps. Go ahead, I won't be hurting deep down inside (o.k. maybe a little).
(As a side note, Apple's tech support is 1-800-APL-CARE... and the front line of defense for them is designed to deal with people who need explanation of what's an mp3 [sarcasm mine], so you might want to get passed up the ladder right away. The next line of experts is actually, well, expert.)
I had the exact same issue -- same discs that worked prior to upgrading, now don't. I'm trying to burn a playlist of ONLY iTunes purchased music. I click "Burn Disc", it ejects my blank disc, and tells me to insert a blank disc.
So I think, great, just great (CRAP!) maybe I can turn back the clock - I go to Windows's "System Restore" feature. The idea is to revert everything back to what it was before I upgraded the iTunes software. (on my machine, it's START-MENU > ALL PROGRAMS > SYSTEM TOOLS > System Restore)
I do - and go to launch the old iTunes - the old version before I upgraded the software. It won't launch, because iTunes_Library.itl was created using a later version. Basically, Apple in its imperial wisdom has burned my bridges for me!
This step may be inconsequential, but I'll include it anyway: thinking if I removed the file from the iTunes folder the older iTunes could launch, I do so. I copy "iTunes Library" and "iTunes Music Library" to a different drive, then delete them. And then, but I get the same can't-launch-because-of-library error, I copy them right back. (who knows, maybe that was important)
Eh. At this point is when I start calling tech support, getting put on hold, having to repeat that the problem is not the blank discs, is not the playlist, etc.
But in the meantime I decide that this old version of iTunes is worthless to me now, so I might as well run the iTunesSetup file again (the one I "saved to disk" when upgrading). I do run it, it runs, and by now I'm back on the phone with one of the actual experts.
I walk him through my problem - but now it isn't a problem. I get a new and different error message: I'm not authorized to burn these songs. Which means I just need to authorize the computer, which iTunes prompts me to do, which then lets me play, burn, basically if you can get to see that, you're home free.
    BOTTOM LINE
If you're having this exact problem, and running XP, you might have success IF:
    (1) Run System Restore, to restore to before the iTunes upgrade
((1.5) POSSIBLY move "iTunes Library" and "iTunes Music Library" out of that folder, then back in. I did, but it seems irrelevant.)
    (2) Run the iTunesSetup application again.
And at that point, if you were me, you would be back on track.
If this helps, donations in lieu of flowers to Smile Train dot org. I mean, come on, to be born funny-looking, it's just not fair.
And as long as I'm typing why not pass judgment on the individual Apple employees I spoke with...
JASON and JOANNE - are awesome people, and if I had a party they'd totally be invited. Nerdy-cool. You guys both rock.
ERIC was a schmuck who seemed incapable of understanding my problem, making me repeat myself slow and loud, because maybe he's hard of hearing. Schmuck for putting me on hold for a half-hour then dumping the call (intentional?) and killing off my willingness to give Apple thousands of dollars over the course of my life.
CHRIS seemed like a good guy, not hugely helpful to tell me I'm 440 days out of warranty when my problem has already been accepted, but was able to pull through and put me to the second cool person I spoke with.
DONNA is just too nice to be condemned to deal with people's phone-in frustrated problems. Great for that reason, so nice, may she not go crazy on account of work.
    That's it, good luck.

  • IMac won't let me print on both sides using my hp D2400 printer

I just received my iMac and was trying to print on both sides using my hp D2400. But, on the option page, it won't let me choose "Print on both sides". Why? How do I fix it? Thanks!!

From the HP Support site, have you done the following, as you need to:
Install or update the HP software with Apple Software Update
Choose your connection type for steps to install HP software using Apple Software Update.
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?cc=us&dlc=en&docname=c03404580&lc=en #N187
    USB connection
Click the Apple menu ( ), and then click Software Update . Software Update checks for available updates and updates the database that your Mac uses to determine available printer software.
Click Show Details , select any available software updates, and then click Install .
NOTE: Install all available updates for best printer performance and functionality.
Turn on your printer, and then make sure that it has paper in the tray and that it is in a ready state.
Connect the USB cable to the printer and to the Mac. A print queue is automatically created for your printer. If the Mac already has current software for your printer, the print queue is created in the background.NOTE:If you are prompted to install any additional software for your printer, click Install , and then follow the instructions to complete the installation.
Click the Apple menu, and then click System Preferences .
Click Print & Scan , and then make sure that your printer is in the list of available devices. If your printer is not listed, click the plus sign ( ) at the bottom of the left pane, click the name of your USB printer, and then click Add .NOTE: Quit and restart any applications that were open before adding the printer to use the updated HP software features.
    Hope this helps

  • IPhoto 6.0.6 update won't let me burn DVDs correctly

I was backing up my photos to DVD today via iPhoto. I burned one disc before I did the 10.4.9 update and it worked fine. After I downloaded and installed the 10.4.9 & iPhoto updates I go to burn a disc and it says the Burn Failed. So, I put in the disc again. Mac OS X saw it was a blank DVD so I tried again. Still! - it won't burn!
So I try another blank DVD, and then another - each time the disc is inserted it's seen as a blank DVD. I don't understand it. It's the same brand I used before the 10.4.9 update & iPhoto and now suddenly Im having problems.
I'm guessing one of the updates (or both of them) changed something. Because now I can't backup my photos to a DVD. I tried repairing permissions and even restarting my iMac. Is anybody else having the same problem?
    I am running Mac OS X 10.4.9 and iPhoto version: 6.0.6 (322)
Here are screenshots of the different errors I get, first the one, then the other.
    http://www.stevenmatarazzo.com/images/iphoto-burn-error1.jpg
    http://www.stevenmatarazzo.com/images/iphoto-burn-error2.jpg
Any help would be wonderful, I just need to burn the last disc to complete my iPhoto backup.

Ok big update. I burned another album using iPhoto and it worked fine. Seems that this problem is not isolated to burning discs, it's isolated to copying these files all together. Something is fishy and I have no idea what's wrong.
I attempted to copy all of the 4,000 (from the album I wanted to burn originally) or so photos to my external Hard Drive. It was about to copy them when I get an error message saying "IM000914_1.JPG" is busy. That's it - it doesn't give me any options, but "OK" I click OK and the process stops. So I remove the file in question. I go to copy the photos again, bam! Another problem with a different file name. I can't understand what's going on. So at this point I re-built the Library and Thumbnail caches again. I try it again - same problem.
The similarities between the files are interesting. All were taken around 2004 and were transfered from my old iBook a while ago. They usually have a filter or were modified from the original. And all of the file names end with an underscore and a number, for example "_1.jpg" or "_2.jpg". There are no other programs that are using these file so this puzzles me why they would be in use.
If I try and copy the individual file that's "busy" it will copy fine. But if I select it as a group and try and copy, it gives me an error message and fails to copy. I wish there was a way to locate which out of the 4,000 + files are bad, but the album I have is mixed with photos from 2004 to 2005. It would be impossible to locate all of them by hand. I'm thinking maybe if I can somehow copy the files from the select album via FireWire Target disk mode maybe the files wouldn't be "In use" - but I can't think of a way to select all of the photos in the album out of iPhoto.
I'm confused and frustrated with this one, any help would be great.
The exact error message reads "The selected items cannot all be put into the same location, because at least one of them named "<filename>" is busy. [OK]
    Thanks again!

  • Won't let me burn more than 90mb to a cd???

Yesterday something odd happened, I went to write a CD with my mac mini internal writer. All of a sudden it won't let me put more than 90mb onto a cd.
We had changed the make of cd's we use so I thought it may be that, I found on old cd (that already had a small session written to it) and tried that. Again it said I could only put 90mb onto the cd... BUT it actually let me write 200+mb onto it. The blank Cd's won't let me do that, they say not enough room etc.
    Anyone have any ideas????
    I'm using toast 7, on system 10.3.9.
The cd's i'm using are Imation CD-R 800mb Multispeed (overburning)
The old ones were Imation CD-R 700mb 52x

I wouldn't be surprised if 800MB CD's don't work. I I'm correct, your drive only supports 700MB's (unless you've upgraded it with a SuperDrive. Anyway, the Imation CD-R's should work 52x should work.
    Things to try
    1) Go to homefolder >> Library >> Preferences. Now trash the file called "com.roxio.toast.plist. Try burning with Toast now. If it does work, you had a corrupted preference file and now the problem is solved. If it still doesn't work, proceed to step 2.
    2) Instead of using Toast, use the Finder Burn option. Insert your CD-R into your drive. It'll ask you for a name, name it something and click OK. Now you should see a CD-R icon on the desktop. Drag whatever files that you wanted to burn onto the CD. Now double-click on the CD to open it. You should see all the files that you dragged onto the CD. Now, go File >> Burn Disc. It will start burning. If it works, your Toast program is corrupted, reinstall it. If it still doesn't work, repeat step 1 and proceed to step 3.
    3) Use a CD/DVD Drive Lens cleaner. Costs about $10 CAN. Use the drive cleaner and try burning with Toast. If it works now, then you had a dirty lens and now it's solved. If it still doesn't work, repeat steps 1 and 2 and proceed to step 4.
    4) Try different discs. Try using Maxell 700MB/80min CD-R's they work with absolutely every mac. They cost around $18 CAN for a pack of 10 w/ jewel cases. Now try burning with Toast. If it worked, your problem was bad CD's, keep using Maxell. If it didn't work, repeat steps 1, 2 , and 3. After all that, if it still doesn't work, post back for more solutions.
