G4 kernal panic... now nothing!?....

I have a G4 that was running 10.5 at the time. My wife started it up and she got the usual kernal panic that gives the power button on the screen at start up and says to reboot. She did so and got the same message. I tried a couple times but still couldn't get it to reboot. I tried zapping the PRAM, unpluggining it over night, wouldn't start up even under safe boot, when i tried to do fsck on it it got about halfway through the dos looking text and then froze up, I even tried disk warrior and it said that my directory is too far gone to be fixed. I then tried reinstalling the software and it took me forever to get it to do it without crashing... finally I had it reinstalled and i started it up and fixed my wife's email etc...... and I shut it down. The next day.... kernal panic again... I still can't do any of the checks... and it is driving me crazy....
Any ideas?!?!?!
Marc

Tried the ram.... still panicking
Put a new PRAM battery in.... still panicking
This is what I got the second time trying to restart if anyone knows code....

I have no clue what all that means except my Firewire is working, which nothing was connected to it, lol
The only thing connected to the computer at the time was the monitor.... no keypboard, internet or printer.... nothing but the monitor.

I've read the phrases kernal panic and failing gpu. I stating getting these a few months back. They have been happening in clusters. Now after closing the book it won't start at all and it feels hot. Its gotten hop in the past when apparently it kept going after I closed it but this is the first time it won't start up again for about a half hour now after I opened it up.
This has a solid state drive so its not a disk problem.

That does not mean it can't be a SSD issue.

  • Kernal panic caused from garageband

Hi guys this seems to be a recurring problem, im now on my 3rd 2011 macbook pro and about 10% of the time im on garage band it kernal panics .
I had headphones in and the blue snowball mic that the apple store gave me for free because they said it was compatible and caused no problems. I was in the middle of speeding up the bpm/tempo of my song and the boom it kernal panics...this is probly my 11th or 12th time getting this..and each time my computer seems to get significantly slower.
Please guys this is making my mac experience miserable..i have been on the phone with customer support for probably more than 10 hrs and they always blame it on one thing or another....Ive even had a kernal panic with nothing plugged in before. THIS NEEDS TO STOP.
So I would appreciate what ever advice you guys can give...thanks and here is the report

  • Kernal Panic Over and Over--repaired, checked yesterday, now again?

    Help!
My computer had problems with display, track pad, not powering up, and lots of parts were replaced in January (MacBook Pro purchased 12.31.09).  Got it home, after a while constant kernal panics.  tried everything, brought it into Apple store yesterday, ran diagnostics, hard disk repaired, seemed OK.
Shortly after I came home it happened again.  I repaired permissions, did verify disk, no problems with disk.  Updated software, including went to Java and Adobe and updated them.
Nothing works.  Now the permissions note lots of problems with Remote Management (one of the updates from yesterday, 5.21) and Java (yesterday too).
What to do?  Do I have to bring it back?  It's very hard to figure out.
    Lulu
MacBook Pro OS X 10.6.8, would like to go to Lion but don't want to until my machine is stable

    Hi Lulu,
I would bring it back to the Apple Store. There's obviously something wrong with it and it's their problem (given you just had it repaired), not your's. RAM is often the cause of KPs. Is this the original RAM or third-party that you added?

  • After install of Mavericks, it looks like my system kernal panics and just sits there. I tried waiting over two nights. Tried reinstalling twice, booting r/s. Recovery partition now has Mavericks as OS. Im running a iMac i3 27 inch circa 2011. Any ideas?

After install of Mavericks, it looks like my system kernal panics and just sits there. I tried waiting over two nights. Tried reinstalling twice, booting ro the repair partition and repairs permissions/drive/verify , with no problems. Tried reseting PVRAM(or whateverit called). Recovery partition now has Mavericks as OS. Im running a iMac i3 27 inch circa 2011. Any ideas? Can still bootcamp into windows.
    Thank you

bhadotia wrote:Anyway's the file downloaded from dell to update the partition for Studio 1555 is corrupted (checksums don't match). My partition still doesn't boot. I'm working to fix this and will update my post when I'm done.
The file seems to create the CD/DVD/Image and USB just fine. So I used this only to create a CD image which I then wrote on a blank CD which seems to work fine. Also, I played around a bit and had some partial success in booting the partition. I've updated my original opening post with the new findings.
Whew!! what a waste of time! Never want to do all of this again .

  • Grey startup screen on my profile, but I can access guest profile and my hardrive partition to windows?!?! I had a kernal panic after it was knocked off coffee table in my user account, now I cannot access it from safe mode or anything... :(

My laptop fell off the coffee table, and slammed shut. It then produced a kernal Panic to restart, which I did. It the brings up the user icons, mine and guest, but will not go past the grey screen with spinner on mine. It does let me into the basic safari setting I had on the guest user, AND when i press option on start up, will let me access the windows partition I have set up and all works fine.
I have tried safe mode, safe mode with display screen and the NVRAM/PRAM restarts, and nothing!
I have let the battery run completely, restarted, filled up the battery before starting.... everything.... anybody have any ideas? else I am going to have to visit a genius! grrrrrrr....
    Thanks in advance!

Looks like that is what you are going to end up doing.  No telling what was damaged internally.

  • Kernal panic after installing LR3- now after re-install,no privileges

    imac
    2.4 gHz
    300 HDD
    3G ram
I installed Lightroom 3 and in 64 bit mode it crashed the system with 'kernal panic'.
Managed to get it working in 32 bit (slowly) but was advised to re-install 10.5.8 as I was getting ACL found but not expected errors when I tried to repair permissions.
    I re-installed but now find I have no administrator privileges - so can't do any updates etc;
managed to do: Installer>Utilities>reset password - but it still says password is wrong.
I also had used Time Machine to back up my system : when I tried to restore, the restore button is greyed out - I can select on various items, but that is as far as I can get.
Am at my wits end - don't see why the re-install has caused this problem

If all else fails, you can reinstall Snow Leopard using the same installer disc you used to install it originally (or your grey system discs if your Mac came with Snow Leopard installed). This will not erase your user files but you will have to update the OS & Apple-supplied apps after the installation. This isn't as painful as it sounds if you use the Software Update app immediately following the first normal restart after the installation completes. Software Update is smart enough to pick the most appropriate update(s) to get your Mac back to the latest software, including automatically picking the Combo version of the OS updater if the installed version is more than one minor version behind the latest one.
In fact, given how slow a Time Machine restore can be, if you have a fast high speed Internet connection this could take less time & effort on your part than doing the TM restore. Plus, it guarantees that you get the latest versions of everything & that they are all properly linked.

  • Just upgraded to Leopard now I get constant kernal panics!

I just upgraded my G4 PPC to 10.5.8. I can do things okay on my computer for a while then it does the kernal panic. All updates have been done except the prokit 5 one (I use logic and the last upgrade messed with it). Could this be causing the issue? Here is the info. I hope someone can help so I can start doing more recording!

First, I would disconnect all peripherals except the original Apple keyboard and mouse. Boot the computer into safe mode if possible and do the following:
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your currently installed OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger and Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
Now, you did not indicate if this upgrade to 10.5.8 was from an earlier version of Leopard or if you first upgraded to Leopard then to 10.5.8 using the combo updater. I'm assuming the former, so after you've done the above repairs reinstall the 10.5.8 Combo Updater. If you did not use a Combo Updater, then you can download it from support.apple.com/downloads/.
If the above doesn't help then I would suggest reinstalling OS X as follows:
How to Perform an Archive and Install
An Archive and Install will NOT erase your hard drive, but you must have sufficient free space for a second OS X installation which could be from 3-9 GBs depending upon the version of OS X and selected installation options. The free space requirement is over and above normal free space requirements which should be at least 6-10 GBs. Read all the linked references carefully before proceeding.
    1. Be sure to use Disk Utility first to repair the disk before performing the Archive and Install.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. If no errors are reported, then quit DU and return to the installer.
    2. Do not proceed with an Archive and Install if DU reports errors it cannot fix. In that case use Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro to repair the hard drive. If neither can repair the drive, then you will have to erase the drive and reinstall from scratch.
    3. Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When you reach the screen to select a destination drive click once on the destination drive then click on the Option button. Select the Archive and Install option. You have an option to preserve users and network preferences. Only select this option if you are sure you have no corrupted files in your user accounts. Otherwise leave this option unchecked. Click on the OK button and continue with the OS X Installation.
    4. Upon completion of the Archive and Install you will have a Previous System Folder in the root directory. You should retain the PSF until you are sure you do not need to manually transfer any items from the PSF to your newly installed system.
    5. After moving any items you want to keep from the PSF you should delete it. You can back it up if you prefer, but you must delete it from the hard drive.
    6. You can now download a Combo Updater directly from Apple's download site to update your new system to the desired version as well as install any security or other updates. You can also do this using Software Update.
And, if the above doesn't help start looking at the probability of bad RAM.

  • 13 inch mid 09 MBP will not boot in safe mode or os disc. originally kernal panic but now blank screen. is this logic board? no liquid damage.

I upgraded the ram and hdd a while back(RAM first with no issues, then hdd around 2 months later). The computer started freezing a few days after the hdd upgrade.
I reformatted the hdd and it worked fine for a few weeks then same freezing issue. Instead of wiping the drive again I repaired the disc and this had it fixed for about a month. I was booting in safe mode for a few days with no issue and went about uninstalling 3rd party apps. Then the Kernal panic issue started, When I inserted the OS cd the screen went blank and has not come back on after repeated boots.
Can we put this down to logic board and if so can it be repaired rather than replaced?
    Thanks

    thanks for the reply,
just reinstalled the factory RAM and HDD. Same issue of blank screen. At the moment i have no way of connecting to external monitor.
The OS cd is still in drive and i can hear the drive spinning for a few seconds at the start but it stops after about 20 seconds.

  • Kernal Panic Cost Me Money and No Cure

    Hi All
There is a history to this problem and so I will try and set it out so it is easy to read:
Macbook Pro Unibody Late 2008 and early 2009. 2.4 Ghz, 4 gig ram upgraeded from 2 gb in 2009 and woked fine since. Did have OSX 10.5.8
    1. For a few months in 2012 I had a problem where I kept getting a kernal panic on boot up BUT I lived with it as I could do a PRAM reset or remove battery and put back in and usuallly worked
    2. Late 2012 - problem becoming very frequent and so I run lots of diagnostics online hardware test and everything listed on previous posts......no obvious problem
    3. In December I decided to get an SSD and installed this however still getting intermitant problem afer initail success
    4. After I had tested without I added old hardrive to dvd bay and still intermitant problem but no chnge from when without adding old harddrive
    5. I took to a shop to sure it
    6. They said they could not find problem but then fixed the chip [suspicious as to what fixed I think they just installed lion] and installed Lion and working but that they had disabled the old drive and said my warranty would tun out if i reconnected - now I am confident that nothing to do with my old drive.
    7. I got it back after paying over £100 and looked like it was working at first.
    8. I reconnected mu old hard drive and still working no problem
    9. I installed live and still working ok
    10. I had bought a apple super drive for loading dvds etc and tried to connect - no success - but the guy at the shop said he had connected a dvd drive no problem
    11. After a bit oif reseach i discovered that apple in their wisdom disable apple super drvie from macbook pro that origianally had an internel dvd
    12. I opened up /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.Boot.plist and chaned to:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
    <!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple Computer//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd">
    <plist version="1.0">
    <dict>
    <key>Kernel Flags</key>
    <string>mbasd=1</string>
    </dict>
    </plist>
basically add the mbasd=1 into the <string>
Now this worked fine but when I first tried to do it I struggled as there is no password set on my mac the guy at shop removed and so i had to add it - this caused a kernal panic at first but then it was ok again
    13. I loaded Logic Pro from my super drive
    14. Not work initially so download updates etc
    15. Logic works great
    16. At some point it sarted getting kernal panics again and getting as bad as before
    17. I disconnect my old har drive and still getting kernal problems
    18. Safe mode has worked a couple of times and once just hung with spinning thing
    19. I probably need to get my money back from the guy who tried to fix it but more importantly - I would prefer to get another 2 years out of this macbook pro rather than having to buy a new one or even switching windows etc...
I have so kernal paics below - if anyone could shed any light I would be very gratefull as I have spent far too much time and money on trying to rescue this macbook pro.

Do a search of this forum for "Problems with Seagate 750GB XT series drive". There is a long thread on users of 2009 MBPs that had many problems with that series drive Until they Replaced the drive cable. Other have posted to that thread with the exact model number of the Updated cable.
It can be found online at places like iFixit.com and maybe OWC, macsales.com.
Funny part about that thread is there was more then one user that kept sending the Seagate drives back to Seagate as defective, Many of them, over and over and that just can't happen. I always contended that it was not a drive problem but a Computer problem. After the original poster, and others that were having the same problems, replaced the cable they never had another problem.

  • Kernal panic preventing shut down after Mountain Lion upgrade

Following upgrade to Mountain Lion, kernal panics are stopping shut down of my Mac from the apple menu. I have a late-2009 Mac Mini. OS X closes as normal but then restarts with message "Your computer restarted because of a problem". I have performed disk verfication, repaired permissions, reset VRAM and SMC. Booting from original hardware disc allows a normal shut down, so I suspect this is software related (probably Mountain Lion?). Kernal panic report from Console is below.
Reading this https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4135480?start=30&tstart=0 suggests problems with nvidia cards and Mountain Lion. My Mac Mini has the original nvidia card it shipped with (9600M) and if I disconnect the display just before shut down it (usually) seems to shut down normally so might be display related?
Other than the problem with shutting down everything is working normally. First instance of this problem was immediately after installing Mountain Lion. I am currently considering a full-reinstall of Mountain Lion from the recovery partition and using Time Machine to retrieve my settings etc, although I am concerned this will not work if it is a genuine bug.
Any assistance or solutions gratefully received!

    Hello hotdavesweet,
It sounds like you have exactly the same problem as I have - nothing connected except the TV, permissions repaired, PRAM reset, etc.
Are you using Mountain Lion?? I had to downgrade to Lion to solve it. Unfortunately, a very similar problem occurs with the latest version of Lion (10.7.5). I'm sure that something with the latest updates is causing problems on certain Macs. I've filed a bug report with Apple so it may help if you do the same.
It could be a problem with using Samsung LCD TVs as monitors. Or maybe a graphics card issue - the user in this discussion: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4316892?start=15&tstart=0 noted that a similar problem on a 2009 Mac Pro was caused by their (nvidia) graphics card driver.
Either way, I think it is something that Apple should address, even if it is only affecting a few users. Apple's mantra used to be that everything just works, but now I cannot upgrade to Mountain Lion with my setup (despite my Mac being easily capable of running it) and nor can I upgrade to Lion 10.7.5. It doesn't work as it should.

  • Kernal Panics. Again!

a couple months ago my computer all of a sudden started having these kernal panics and absolutely nothing i did, including erasing the hd and installing Leopard, helped at all. finally it just went away on its own. now, since yesterday it gets these kernal panics constantly, just like before! when i took it to the genius bar before, it ran for half an hour without crashing but when i brought it back home it acted crazy again or maybe its just a coincidence. can anyone shed some light?
I've been using Macs for a long time so please be assured that I have tried to troubleshoot this already and nothing is working. but i need help from someone who knows more than i do before i just run to the genius bar, again. its a 17" flat panel G4, 1.25Ghz processor, 160Gb hd, 768MB RAM, nothing has been recently installed or updated.

I believe you have some bad memory. I've experienced this same problem on my G5. Random crashes and occasional kernal panics. I reinstalled the OS, ran disk utility, you name it, nothing worked.
Then on a hunch, I ran Tech Tool Pro. In the hardware test section I chose to loop the memory test 100 times. I did this a couple of times and the memory passed 199 times out of 200.
My particular model does not require paired memory, so I took one of my two memory cards out. The problem continued. So I put that one back in and took the other one out. The problem went away.
I bought replacement memory, installed it, and haven't had a problem since.
If I had run a hardware test only once, I would not have discovered that my memory was faulty.

  • Re-Install result in Kernal Panic

I was running 10.6.6 and had a time machine back up. I had to re-install so after following Apple instructions, I installed my 10.5 disc and then installed 10.6. I then inserted my 10.5 disc and from utilities chise 'recover' to recover from my TM backup. After the recovery process finished, about 6 hours, it asksed me to restart the machine. I did so and got the 'You need to restart your computer.." kernal panic message.
Everytime I now try to restart the message keeps coming back no matter which keys i press. Nothing I do will stop the message. I'm very frustrated that something like this has happened after following Apples instructions. Its a simple re-install and didn't expect all this to happen.
    Anyone recommend a solution?
    Many Thanks
    Mike

Did a re-install as my mac was really slow after several tools to improve performance. It needed a fresh beginning
Unlike some other operating systems, that's rarely required on OSX, and usually doesn't accomplish anything (well, not anything good).
I tried to restore TM backup from Snow Leopard but when it returned a message saying it could delete the HD in preparation for the backup.
Yes, to do a full restore, the destination must be erased first.
In the process of trying again so will post an outcome.
As mentioned in #E8, either do a full restore, or reinstall OSX (and the "combo" update).

  • Can Someone Explain a Kernal Panic?

So is it like the blue screen of death on windows, is it somthing to worry about? I looked it up on wikipedia and nothing came up. I thought I saw somthing like this on Macuser or tuaw that was some kind of prank, I will try and find the link.
Got it, this could explain dashboard problems look at this
    http://www.tuaw.com/2006/05/30/widget-watch-kernel-panic/
Now, if someone has access to your computer that could be the problem. it is based on this
    http://www.tuaw.com/2005/08/10/widget-watch-bsod/

    A kernal panic is when:
A kernal of corn gets sperated from the cob. It will then panic and run around like a chicken with its head cut off in circles waving the arms and screaming at the top of its lungs. . . .
oh wait, you meant the computer kind.
    Never mind.

  • I'm having kernal panics even in single user mode

My new Mac Pro has been having kernal panics left and right. I've done everything suggested here plus everything the Apple people have been telling me to do both on the phone and at the local Apple store. Nothing helps and the last call I made the Apple tech suggested I install a new hard drive which he is sending me. I also have his extension number so I can call him when the install is done. In the meantime while I'm waiting for the new hard drive I manage to reinstall the system after a couple of tries and just for grins boot into single user mode and let the computer sit for awhile. When I get back I find the computer has once again crashed and this one line stands out "simple lock deadlock detection". What this means I have no clue but I'm beginning to suspect what I have is a real lemon. If anyone has some insight they'ld like to share on this I'm open to suggestions.
P.S. And just to let you know I've done the following:
    1. I've booted into safe boot mode and it crashes
    2. I've booted off the install DVD and let it stand and it crashes
    3. I've disconected everything but the mouse and keyboard and it crashes
    4. I've reinstalled the system numerous times and it still crashes
    5. I've taken it to the local Apple store where they replaced the memory and it still crashes
    6. I've called the Apple help line and followed their suggestions which included unplugging the computer for 15 seconds to clear the SMU and it crashes even worse.
    7. I've zapped the pram and reset the nvram and it still crashes
    8. Even when I left it at the local Apple Store where they used their monitor, mouse, keyboard, and power cord it still crashes
    9. It crashes on startup from time to time
    10. And last but not least it crashes in single user mode even though I've done fsck -fy and then let it just sit
    11. Oh yes and one more thing, the crashes are completely random and unpredictable.
Mac Pro duel core intel xeon 2.66mhz   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Well I finally resolved my issue, hopefully. Upon installing the new hard drive I had no problems for a week or so and decided to add a second drive and put my old system on it and see what would happen when I booted from the second drive. All went well for a week and then boom the crashes began again. I then switched back to the new drive with the fresh system and all went well for a little over a week when boom the panics returned. I called Apple and they made an appointment for me at the local Apple store. After looking at my files which included about 7 phone calls and several visits to the Apple store the best solution was a brand new Mac Pro. All this has been covered under warranty which is awesome. The only crashing I've had to date had to do with something called "mdimportserver" whatever that is. I also can only use one ethernet connector which is strange. I figured it might have to do with the new hard drive so I booted over to the old drive and everything is working fine except for the ethernet port which I haven't tried yet. I figure for now it's best to let that sleeping dog alone since everything else is working so good. When I'm sure this new Mac is working ok I'll wipe the new drive and use Super Duper to clone this system over rather than use Apple's migration assistant which evidently didn't do such a good job of migrating my system over. I'll let you all know how it goes several weeks from now hopefully.
