G4 MDD and iLife6

hi all
Someone give me a G4 MDD with OSX 10.5.5 and I noticed there is no iLife app installed besides iTunes. Can I re-install iLife6 from my Mac-Mini DVD software package? Or do I have to purchase new iLife app?
Thanks
Web dude

The Mac Mini disc will probably not work. If it's an Intel Mini, I'm sure it won't work.
Before buying a new iLife package, check the system requirements; the current iMovie is unavailable to a G4 processor.

  • Best graphics card for G4 MDD and still have 3d acceleration in OS 9?

My MDD (June 2003) has the standard 9000 Pro in it. I read in another topic on here where someone said if 3D acceleration in OS 9 is required then upgrade options are extremely limited. Just wondered if anyone knows the last best AGP card I can stick in this MDD that'll still provide 3D acceleration in OS 9.2.2, or am I stuck with the 9000 Pro?

    Hi-
The Radeon 9700 Pro was the top card to ever be offered for the MDD.
The OEM version is very rare, and usually expensive.
The equivalent PC version 9700 Pro, flashed to Mac ROM, is readily available ob eBay.
The 9700 Pro is pretty close in performance to the 9800 Pro, supports Core Image in OS X, and is a good upgrade beyond the 9000 Pro.
However, the driver support in OS 9 is still limited:
    http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/Graphics/Radeon9700PROOEM/index.html
The Geforce4 Ti is another performance option for the MDD. If you read the following article carefully, you may find that a graphics card won't help as much in OS 9 as you think:
    http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/Graphics/geforce4ti/geforce4_titaniumMac.html
    This article makes similar points:

Serious gaming, with help from a powerful graphics card is in the realm of OS X.
For OS 9, most cards don't really get utilized as much as one may think.
Look at this article to see the potential for gaming in the MDD and OS X:

  • G4 MDD and Wireless

So I'm completely new to MAC. I have here an old G4 MDD and I'd like to get a wireless card in there and use it for a movie machine.
What kind of card do I need?
Right now it has OS 10.3.9 - can/should I upgrade? I need to completely reformat this guy so I can admin and everything.
    Thanks

You need an AirPort card, or a PCI card or external component which supports at least one of the 802.11 protocols. If your computer has a FireWire 800 port, the AirPort slot is designed for an AirPort Extreme card instead.

  • G4 MDD and WD SATA Drive Connection

G4 MDD and WD SATA Drive Connection
    My G4: G4 MDD firewire 400 model, Single 1.25 - Dual Boot. Running OS 10.3.9 and 9.2.2
I just ordered parts from OWC, on their way here. Sorry about ALL these questions but I'm new to this.
I purchase a Firmtek Seritek 1S2 controller card and 2 WD SATA Internal Drives. A - WD 640 GB SATA HD "For my Boot Drive", and a - WD 320GB SATA HD that I will use for a Scratch Drive.
    Question 1 :
The Seritek 1S2 is a 2 port "1.5GB" Card. My 2 new Drives are set to "3GB".
Will I have to change the "Jumper Settings" on the Hard Drives for this Card?
Do you know what pins to but the jumper block on?
    Question 2 :
For Power connection I also, purchased 2 - 15 pin to 4 pin power Adapters, so I wouldn't have to put the drives in upside down for better alignment for mounting the screws in the cages.
The WD Drives come with both the 4 pin connection and the 15 pin connection for power. Would using the power Adapters be alright? Is there any difference with power consumption from the HD's to the 4 pin Molex in the G4? Does this setup work alright with my machine's power requirements? And the H.D's power requirements? OR, is it better/safer to just stick with the G4's 4 pin Molex connector and put the drives in upside down?
    Question 3 :
I also purchased 2 - 18" Data cables 90 degree Left Angle, so I won't have a problem closing the door on my G4.
Which left angle end goes where for this? On the HD's or the Card?
I will be putting the 640 GB in the Rear Cage and the 320 GB in the Front Cage.
Each Cage Holds 2 drives each. For better heat protection, should I put the drives in the outer or inner drive carrier slots?
    Question 4 :
I'd figure I would place the 1S2 Card in the Third PCI slot. Does it matter which slot to put the card in?
    Question 5 :
I plan on Cloning my original 80 GB drive to my new 640 GB drive. I would be using Super Duper for this. After that I will be putting my 80 GB dive in a external firewire case I also purchased, to use it as a back up.
I was told I should keep the 80 GB drive in my G4 and Clone the drive to the new drive using Disk Utility that is in my 80 GB drive already. Using Disk Utility to Partition my drives then Format the drives both journeled. Would that work alright? Or do I have to use the Boot CD to do that?
Then I would use Super Duper to clone. Then choose the new cloned drive in system profiler to start up on that drive to see if everything is OK. Then reset the pram, and then I can remove my 80 GB to put in the case for backups. Does this sound like a good procedure to do?
Sorry for all the questions! But, this is the first time I'm doing anything like this. I would really appreciate any help I could get with these questions before I start doing this. Thanks!

Do you mean making 3 Partitions on the 640? 1- OS and Apps, 2 - 50-80 GB Free Space for Swap Files or do you mean Project files, such as Starting a Photoshop or Video File? Is that what you mean? And a third partition to store my other Data files?
With a second drive dedicated to scratch, I would install the OS and all applications on one partition. If the total software requirements are 50GB, I would make a 100-150GB partition. I think larger would be better, so as software and OS needs don't overlap as software is running. The 50-80GB free space is *included with* the OS and applications.
With the remaining 450-500GB, I would leave as one partition for all project files and data to be placed on. If one type of file dominates all other, for instance, photo files, I might consider splitting that remainder for a dedicated photo file volume, with a third partition for the rest.
When deciding on the OS/App's partition size, try to anticipate near future software install. Don't want to run out of room.
For instance, I have a SATA WD Raptor as my boot drive. OS and applications only, with approx 60GB of OS and software, and the rest free space (of the formatted 140GB total of the 150GB drive.
On a second drive, a SATA WD 640GB, I have three partitions- 100GB for data, documents, mail, etc., one 300GB for photos, and one 200GB for music.
A third drive, a SATA 300GB Maxtor, is used for PS scratch, as a target for scans, music file encoding, target for downloads, any file that is "temporary" in nature. When work is done, the files are moved to the respective locations, and the drive is cleared.
I also have a fourth ATA Seagate 120GB drive, that I keep OS 9, 10.3, 10.4 and 10.5 each on a respective partition, with necessary and OS specific applications for each OS. This serves as my troubleshooting/emergency boot volume.
This helps keep me organized, and allows plenty of free space for system operation.
There are lots of different ways to set up ones drives, but I find that my current setup gives me the desired performance and keeps me from getting cluttered.
A final note, with whatever setup you create, have the appropriate sized external drives for backups of all drive volumes. I use firewire and eSATA connected SATA WD 640GB, ATA Seagate 500GB, and an ATA Maxtor 160GB for cloning all my files, systems and app's.

  • MDD and Fans Blazing

I have a MDD Dual 1.25 with the original 400 watt power supply and fans. This machine used to sit in a server room so the noise it made did not create a problem. It was recently retired from it's position and now will become a desktop for small to medium tasks. The problem is since I reformatted the hard disk and installed Tiger, the lower fan starts increasing it's speed about 60 seconds after the machine is turned on and booted. I installed Temperature Monitor to see if it would reveal anything. According to Temperature Monitor, the breaking point for fan speed is 62C. Once the computer's temperature reaches above 62C, the fans start to rev up. The fans in this unit rev up and up and up and up but the temperature finally settles at around 68C.
The other 2 MDD's in our office run comfortably around 54C, but they had the power supply replacement recall done.
Is the power supply somehow related to the CPU temperature sensor? I decided to replace the variable speed lower fan with a 3 speed fan that is quieter. The computer will only run for about 4 minutes before the goes to sleep because of the CPU overtemp sensor. The heat sink is barely warm. I tried resetting the CUDA chip but that does not see to make a difference.
    Any Suggestions?

I'm sure you have already cleaned the case and heat sink, but just a reminder. Also check the orientation of the fan. I think it is possible to install the OEM fan in reverse so that it ***** over the heat sink instead of blowing. Also try removing the heat sink, remove the OEM heat tape (the black crap) and apply a thin coat of good paste (I'm sure Arctic Silver will be recommended by someone). I get better results after 2-5 heat cycles.
My MDD ran about 58 to 62 with the aluminum heat sink. I got hold of a copper one from a 1.42 and now it runs 54 to 58 (and that's overclocked to 1.33).
Lastly consider case mods such as a stepper fan in the 3/4 drive bay.

  • G4 MDD and networking

    Hi!
I use to connect my MDD G4 to PowerBook via ethernet by: Go --> Connect to server ---> Browse, and choosing the name of the laptop from "Network" folder.
For some reason the "Network" folder stopped to show any servers to choose from. The folder is empty, when usually there were few aliases including the network icon of my laptop.
Somewhere checkbox checked wrong, I suppose, but where?

Yes, both machines have identical set ups, but other does not always find the other.
After turning both machines off, and then starting them again, both machines functioned normally.
It seem that some times it is some kind of lottery if they can be connected or not. This similar problem has occured with firewire connection as well.

  • Would a MDD and ATI 9800 XT get along?

    Hi,
I had a 9800 Pro in the MDD at one time and want to get back to a decent graphics card. I see they are advertised as compatible - found a PC variety that I could get - IIRC I still have all the rom and flashing info sites.
    Thank you.

Absolutely a good card for the MDD (or any 4x AGP G4).
Just tape the 3 and 11 pins, flash the XT with a 9800 Pro 256 MB ROM and off you go.
    Flashing
I use the v130 Pro ROM of the correct size (dump the ROM to find out the size needed for your card) for XT cards.
Use Graphicellerator to change clock speeds (412 MHz GPU and 365 MHz VRAM) of the Pro ROM prior to flash.
I'd advise disassembly and reapplication of compound.

  • G4 MDD and OS 9 HD

I want to move an OS 9 HD (with system folder to a G4 MDD (titanium) and boot from the OS 9 HD. When I do this I get the blinking "?" inside of a disk. The OS 9 HD boots just fine from the G3 tower (this is the original HD used in the G3). My ultimate goal is to have both an OS X and an OS 9 HD in the G4 and pick the drive on startup from which to boot, but first I need to find out how to get the OS 9 HD to boot.
    Thanks,

  • Leopard + CHUD + G4 MDD and FW 800

Many know that CHUD 3.5.2 can be used to set NAP to cool down CPU, but only until 3.5.2, after that Apple took this feature off. There is another problem too, with Leopard this version of CHUD doesn't work.
So using Pacifist from http://www.charlessoft.com/ on CHUD 4.5.0 I found out that Hardware preference is included in CHUD 4.5.0, but not as a System preference anymore but as an application.
If you installed CHUD 4.5.0 you can find it at /Library/Application Support/HWPrefs it is called CPUPalette, just double click to run. There is no menu in this app, Apple took off all the good features. Click on the lower processor or on the minus sign to turn it off. Click on the window’s red bullet to close it. Just simple as that.
But I think most of us wont like it. I don’t.
Again using Pacifist I managed to find out that in CHUD 4.4.4 Apple included a System preference called Processor.prefPane and it has many good features. First of all, it works in Leopard, appears in menu bar, it is easy to turn on/off the processor, controls L2 and L3 cache, shows lots of information of your processors and also has the Processor Palette.
So, grab and install Pacifist, grab CHUD 4.4.4 from here ftp://ftp.apple.com/developer/ToolChest/…formancetools/ and mount it. Drag to Pacifist CHUD.pkg and you will see the contents of it, click on the arrow of System folder and Library folder. Now you see the PreferencePanes listed, give a single click on the PreferencePanes folder to select it and click Install in the Pacifist Window.
It will ask for your admin password and will install the Processor.prefPane.
I hope this can help many of you.

You don't necessarily need Pacifist. You can download *Chud tools 3.5.2* (the version known to work for MDDs!) here: ftp://ftp.apple.com/developer/ToolChest/Testing_-_Debugging/Performancetools/
You can download this applescript (which now works with Leopard) which will automatically turn on nap mode at startup.
Enable nap script (Leopard) here: http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20071101231643321
It's my understanding that a single cpu MDD default has nap mode enable already, so you don't need this if you only have one processor.
Also, see this: http://coolstuff.wordpress.com/2007/02/19/powermac-g4-mdd-cooling-and-noise-redu ction/ a great ongoing blog/discussion/comments of the MDDs noise and heat issues. Much information about fan replacement and Chud tools.

  • Which graphics card for G4 MDD and 30" display?

    Hi folks,
I would really appreciate any help with this as I am confused by what graphics cards are out there. I have a G4 MDD dual 867, 1.75GB RAM, which currently has an NVIDIA GeForce4MX (32MB VRAM) in its AGP slot and an old ATI card (32MB VRAM) in a PCI slot. Each card is driving a 17" Dell CRT display. Not brilliant for a freelance illustrator but it does the job for now....
I really want to get a 30" Cinema display (I am a scientific illustrator working digitally for print, using Photoshop & Illustrator mainly) but I don't know what graphics card I can get that will work in my Mac (it has 3 free PCI slots, but not PCI Express) and reliably support the 30" display at a suitable resolution. I have been trying to research this but have got stumped by the options. I asked in the London Apple Store but they implied I would be better off getting a whole new Mac... rather not spend quite that much money at the moment.
Or would I be better off getting two 23" displays? Which cards can run these in my Mac?
Any help gratefully received - thank you!
    Debbie.

    Hi Debbie-
You can support a 30" Cinema Display with a graphics card that has a dual link DVI output. The ATI Radeon 9600 Pro PC and Mac version has a dual link DVI and will work in your 4x AGP MDD.
The 9600 has two DVI ports, so it will also allow use of two 23" Cinema Displays, without adapters.

  • DUAL 867 MDD AND HDV

Just wondering if anyone knew if my computer can handle HDV footage from a Canon XH-A1...Footage (HDV 1080p24) was able to be captured and brought in from camera itself (via firewire... ) but when i dropped clip into timeline video lagged a second behind audio...sequence settings are all correct..( no render bars at all ) also...clip plays perfect in quicktime player...captured footage onto external GRAID2 drive via firewie 800....ram is maxed out...i was always under the impression that i wasn't even able to capture HD footage at all according to FCP 5.1.4 specs ..to my surprise it did...any help from you people out there would be wonderful...

that was my next question to you..and again much thanx...i was always confused by the technical side...so my dual 867 is like having a 1.73 single processor...??? is that really correct...??? i was always looking for an answer to that....if so..KOOL...didn't realize that...FYI...i have exported HDV clip to DVCPRO HD in qucktime conversion and clip plays in sync now...still get drop frames from time to time..again much thanx for your quick responses

  • Deleted ~usr folder and now i have a dead mdd.... need help

So i was impatiently going through and cleaning up my mdd and for some reason seen the ~usr folder on my home page and had never seen it before, opened it up didnt look important, checked info and it seemed small so it couldnt be much??? Deleted it and soon after saw the side effects and problems it caused. MAchine wouldnt shut down right and when i tried to boot i always get stuck at the grey screen with apple logo and the wheel... So i need some advice on how to get this machine running again?
1: i can to target disk mode and install panther (the only osx disks i currently have) Or i was told that the best thing would be to get a retail copy of the current os ( 10.4) and do an archive and install...
1 question, if i do the archive and install will i loose everything on the disk, ie. folders, files and programs?
2nd ?, if i do target disk mode will i be able to access the HD and maybe save some of the files or apps?
Whats the best thing to do at this point?
    Thanks

If it appears to be time for a relatively painless Archive & Install, which gives you a new/old OS, but can preserve all your files, pics, music, settings, etc., as long as you have plenty of free disk space and no Disk corruption, and is relatively quick & painless...
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107120
Just be sure to select Preserve Users & Settings.

  • Can I dual boot OS 9 and 10.5 on one of these (G4 MDD)?

Simple question, can you dual boot OS 9 along side OS X Leopard on I'm looking a 1.25ghz G4 (single processor), basically the last one Apple ever released in 2003. It says in the specs for it that it can boot OS 9.2.2 and it is also compatible with Leopard. I know Leopard isn't compatible with the classic environment but I don't want classic in OS X, I merely want to be able to boot into OS 9 for some games, and when I want to use the web to be able to boot into Leopard.

    Welcome!
Does anyone know of a good and trusted source for the original install discs for this machine?
Several people here have called Apple fpr these and were told they no longer carry replacement disks for this machine. It's back to eBay or the local Mac user group. Any used Mac that does not come with the system restore disks should be considered defective and avoided, or at least heavily discounted. Can the seller find the disks for you?
Every time I try to transfer a System Folder to the machine..........
That because you need the special version of OS9 on the system disk.
I do have a 733 G4 with a valid OS 9 System Folder. Can I transfer that via target mode and expect it to boot the 1.25?
I've not tried it but, based on my experiences with my MDD and its special needs, I don't think that will work.
If you get a righteous system restore disk set, there is one more hoop: OS9 will not boot if installed on a volume larger than about 195G. I tried installing it on a 250GB drive. It installed and would work in Classic emulation, but would not boot until I wiped that drive and made a modest partition in which OS9 resides.

As an aside, never be afraid to start a new topic in these forums. That usually will get you better help faster because some people will not read an addition to a thread that is already months old, like this one. I realize some web forums flame on people who start new threads but that is not the case around here. Tagging on to an existing thread confuses those offering help and dilutes the help that you and the original poster (OP) both deserve.

  • ADC displays, 10.4.11 and MDD

I've been running a dual 1.25 PowerMac G4 with a 23" Cinema display (ADC) for about 8 years now without a single hint of trouble. No room for the 23" ADC monitor on my desk anymore (making room for 30" w/MacPro), so I picked up a 17" ADC Studio display and wall-mounted it (actually, I have two of these).
Trouble is, my MDD G4 refuses to turn on with either 17" ADC Studio display connected. (LED only blinks once, machine never goes on.) The 23" Cinema works perfectly (as always) and a 15" ADC Studio display works, too. Both 17" ADC Studio displays work fine connected to an old G4 Cube, but both prevent my MDD from starting up. I always thought any Apple ADC display would work on the G4 MDD - no? What makes the 17" Studio displays different? Video card is the OEM ATI Radeon 9000 Pro (1 ADC, 1 DVI).
What am I missing? All four displays work, only the combination of MDD and 17" Studio display fails....?

Tried to startup from a great old SCSI drive running OS9, Monitors CDEV set to proper resolution, etc.
Computer's power button LED only lights when pressed, nothing else happens.
It's a hardware issue, simultaneous with two identical 17" ADC Studio Displays? I have an ADC to DVI converter, but what's the point of trying that? So..... why do they both work perfectly when plugged into a (10.3) G4 Cube?! What's the diff between G4 MDD (Radeon 9000 Pro) and G4 Cube's AGP cards (32MB VRAM 1280x1024 ATI RV200? - upgrade from OEM card)....?
