G4 MDD Boots up with Circle and slash with gears

Hi when i boot up my Server AKA PowerMac G4
i get the default apple and gears for a few seconds
then the apple turns into a circle with a slash in it
still with the gears then stays there forever
HELP

MacBook Pro has started to get a grey screen with circle and slash and will not start up or start into safe mode. This happened once previously, however, it allowed a safe mode reboot and then worked for a week or so. While utilzing the machine, it started with the spinning beach ball for about 5 minutes, went into a shut down mode and then rebooted and came back up with the grey screen with a circle and slash after a few minutes. For the past three days it has been stuck and will not allow it to boot into safe mode. Any idea or suggestions?

Try starting the MBP with the OPTION key down. If you see two HDD icons, select the recovery Icon. From the 4 option menu, select Disk Utility. Select Disk Utility>First Aid and run Verify and Repair.
If you cannot get into the recovery partition, make an appointment at an Apple store genius bar.

My hard drive crashed. Replaced my hard drive. Installed Yosemite. Restored from Time Machine most recent backup before hard drive crash. Now laptop won't start up. Grey screen with circle and slash through it.

After you installed Yosemite and prior to restoring from the backup, were you able to start the Mac?

I attempted to wake up my sleeping Macbook Pro, but becomes unresponsive. I go through all the regular steps to get it to respond, but finally reboot. It starts to boot, then replaces the apple with a circle and slash symbol. Thoughts?

I have a Macbook which suddenly started booting up to a circle and slash symbol, and refuses to go any further.
There were a number of detailed threads about this on the forums, but none of them seemed to fit my particular situation. If anyone has any advice regarding the following, it would be very much appreciated:
I tried repairing the hard drive via DiskWarrior 4.1, but the Macbook refuses to boot from the CD. I can boot from my OS 10.5 DVD, but I am unable to run Disk Utility, as the application sees the Macbook's hard drive, but will not allow me to actually select it in order to verify or repair it. In addition, I have booted up the laptop in Target Disk mode, but my G5 tower fails to see it; however, my tower does acknowledge when there is a CD in the Macbook's drive (such as Disk Warrior or the OS 10.5 DVD).
Lastly, I tried to do an Archive & Install via my OS 10.5 DVD, but when I do this, the install application informs me that it is unable to find OS 10.4 or newer on the hard drive. (The only thing I can't remember is what version of 10.5 the laptop is running, although I update the laptop frequently.)
Anyone have any thoughts? I'd love to try and fix this myself before running to an Apple store.

You can try this:
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger and Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger, and 4.1 for Leopard) and/or TechTool Pro (4.6.1 for Leopard) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
This will not likely get the computer to start, but it would confirm if the drive is OK or repair the directory. If you can then gain access to the drive via Target Disk Mode then you may be able to recover your files. Then use DU to repartition and reformat the drive. If the drive cannot be repaired or reformatted, then it has most likely failed.

Will only boot to a circle with a slash

MacBook Pro will only boot to the circle with a slash symbol. I have tried all the turn on hold C, X, Option key suggestions and have tried the clearing ideas (hold cntl, commmd, p, r). Have put the system disk in to boot from that, now I cannot get the disk out.
Any suggestions out there?

Your computer is not recognizing your hard drive. Plug a mouse in and hold the mouse key down when booting. The disc should eject. Next, make sure the disc is real clean with no finger prints or scratches on it. Then try booting from it again (by holding the "C" key down) when booting. See if your Disk Utility sees the drive and run that. If it does not, or the unit will not boot from the install disc, then you have a serious problem--possibly logic board-related. You could also try running DiskWarrior and see if that will boot and repair the drive.

Power mac g4 MDD put a second hard drive in it and wont boot up with it in

hi i have a second 150g hard drive i just put in my powermac and it will not boot up with it im kinda new to this which is why i bought an a MDD to **** with but i probably shouldnt have done this but i booted the computer up with out the new hard drive plugged in and then plugged it in and its just sitting their with the color wheel going i picked the harddrive up off ebay and it says it will work on a mac is their something im missing here

HI there, likely it's just the Jumper settings on the New HD, set it to Cable Select or Slave if it's in the middle of the cable & the Other one has Jumpers set to Master.

OS X installers have always been fairly specific, hardware-wise. I haven't read anything reflecting that situation with the Recovery HD, so it may be that the Recovery HD created for the MacBook Pro does not have the necessary drivers for the Mac Pro. Obviously, nothing definitive here, but a possibility.

Hi there, I have a 2008 iMac 24' 3.06 Intel Duo with 4gb ram. And yesterday it was working totally fine and jolly with no issues. Then I noticed there was an OS X update for Mavericks, so I finally decided to do it, and once it was rebooted it went to like the grey screen and I could move my mouse, just nothing else was there. So I tried to restart it, and then it booted up, but was really laggy, and so I decided to restart it and try again, this time the iMac froze at the login. So I decided to take it apart, pull the 500gb hard drive, connect it to my MacBook Pro, and then formatted it in Disc Utility. From there, I opened the Mavericks installer on my MacBook and then installed it to the iMac's hard drive via usb hard drive enclosement. And once the install of Mavericks was completed, I put the hard drive back into the iMac and tried to boot it. It now boots up to the white screen with the Apple and the loading circle underneath the Apple and then it freezes and doesn't go any further. So then once that happened, I turned it off and tried to boot it into recovery mode. Then it freezes on the screen with the Apple and loading circle below it. Then out of desperation, tried to use a bootable disc of Mavericks to see if i can at least get the iMac to boot up again, with no success. It froze at the same point again. So now I reach out to the Apple Community to see if anyone else has an idea on what I can do or if anyone had this issue and what they did to resolve it. Any help would be great. Thanks.

mddcfilms and Pat75, I'm having precisely this same issue -- no booting but spinning and freezing gear under the Apple logo. Have either of you come to a resolution? Here are my details:
iMac, Early 2008, 24”, 3.06 GHz, 4GB
September 2013: Nvidia GeForce 8800 GS GPU repaired, HDD replaced with Western Digital 2TB
21 April 2014: Erased HDD with Disk Utility on Mavericks USB; clean installation of Mavericks from the USB. Process completed without issue, including registration process. After a minute or two of poking around, machine shut down immediately (not through the shut-down process).
Since then it will not boot up. Grey screen and Apple logo appear, with gear spinning; the gear freezes, then the machine tries to boot up again. Occasionally I’ll hear “To use English for the main language, press the return key.”
I’ve tried booting into Safe Mode; same gear freeze and restart.
I’ve tried booting to the 10.9 Recovery disk; same gear freeze and restart.
Tried booting from Mavericks USB; same freeze and restart.
Tried booting from 10.6.3 DVD; same freeze and restart.
Ran Apple Service Toolkit (at Stormfront in the UK), which turned up nothing in error.
Started in single-user mode to test HDD and RAM, which are fine.
Started in verbose mode to check logs; some error messages but nothing seems crucial. After the log screen, the grey screen and Apple logo appear, gear spins, and then freeze.

Ideas: Potential booting flaw in Mavericks installation. Firmware incompatibility with Mavericks. Hardware issue in Nvidia GPU (known for problems). At the moment I'm hoping that it's a Mavericks installation or firmware issue, though I suspect the Nvidia GPU has blown up on me. These graphics cards are known for being pieces of junk, so I may try installing the lower spec ATI Radeon 2600 GPU if I can find one at a reasonable price.
Anybody else have precisely these problems or have any advice?

Ok, sounds like the safe mode boot worked... You probably don't want to always be in safe mode though (some reduced functionality) so does it do a normal boot now? If not, you should then reboot into safe mode and run Disk Utility. Then select Macintosh HD on the left hand side, and click the Verify Disk button. If needed, it will ask you to Repair Disk. If there are errors found, Repair Disk again until there are none. Then try another normal boot and reply with result, wether good or bad.

My MacBook pro will only load in safe mode with blue screen then freeze, but I can boot windows up fine and access all info on the mac side. Can anyone help?

My MacBook pro was running fine then it went very slow, I got the spinning world but it would not do anything. I tried to restart but it had frozen, so I turned off the computer by the power buttton. Now it won't boot up, it justmfreezes with a blue screen in safe mode. I have tried booting isank blue user mod and running /sbin/fsck -fy and a couple of other suggestions from various discussion boards but nothing works. I just tried booting up in windows and it works fine, with access to the mackintosh HD.
Any ideas on how to fix the mac side??

Hold the Option key down and restart. Select one of the drives that comes up and hit the Return key.

If the battery was empty (and it may then take 10 to 15 minutes of charging before it will respond), then have you tried a reset ? Press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds, after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the equivalent of a reboot.
