G4 mdd dual self shut down

Hi guys.
I need your help to solve this problem:
my dual G4 mdd 1,42 random shut down by itself.
It always happens during a cold start (never when running) and always at the same point, I mean just after grey screen spinning cursor (at the very start of blue sreen) So I reboot and my Mac start up normally, even more fast than normal behaviour, about 5 or 6 seconds less and desktop appears.
The machine is a little overloaded, 3 HD, 3 extra fan inside (2 on PCI slot), Radeon 9800 connected to Hd molex for power the video card.
The PSU is 360 watts.
Any ideas?
Thank you all for reading this post

Replace the power cord. If this doesn't alleviate the condition, (from your description) I would consider the PSU to be the most likely suspect.

  • MDD G4 rRandom shut-downs. Won't Start Up

    Hello,
My MDD dual 1.25 GHz G4 recently went through a tough spell. One day it randomly just shut off, as if I had kicked the power cord out of the wall. I turned it back on a few minutes later and all was fine. About a week later this happened again. I tried to turn it on again and it shut off just as I was trying to do open an application. This repeated a couple of times. Now the machine won't turn on at all. When I push the power button on the front panel it glows, but fades to nothing as soon as I let go.
I called a local Apple repair place, they said that it sounds like it's the logic board, which would be about $1000 parts and labor. They also want $75 just to properly diagnose the problem. Not really wanting to shell out that kind of money to hear, "yup, it's broke." I am asking the online experts your opinions. Since the computer died, I borrowed an older G4 (533 MHz) and transported both my hard drive and video card into it. It works fine with this computer, so those must not be the issue.
Is there any chance that the problem could be something simpler/cheaper than the logic card? And if it is the logic card, is there a cheaper way of fixing/replacing it? I'm fairly handy and have dug into computers before, though never terribly deeply. All help would be much appreciated.
    Thanks

    Progress?
This weekend I borrowed a voltage tester and gave the old girl an examination. It read no volts on the first phase of the test. (Some of the other tests read what they should, however). So, I plugged the power supply back into the logic board to put the computer away for a while, until I could get another power supply. Just for giggles, I pushed the power button. To my great surprise, the computer started up. Since it had no hard drive and no graphics card, all that I could do was shut it back down again.
Renewed and excited, I plugged reattached the hard drive and graphics card, and started the computer up again. Again it worked. I then shut it down and attached it to its old monitor and so-on, but the computer did not start up. No fan noise, nothing. The power light faded out. Perplexed and more than a little bummed, I brought it back to the table. I decided to unplug the power supply from the motherboard again and see what I could find. There was not dust or foreign object in the connectors, so I was confused. I plugged it in again and it started up again with nothing attached.
Again I brought it back to its regular home. This time, however, I brought a different power cord. I knew that they were both good, but the computer had started up more recently with this other cord. With nothing but the power cord plugged in, the computer again started up in this desk location. I shut it off again and attaached the monitor and keyboard. This time; Success! Oh joy of joys!
Over the next couple of days I ran the computer through its paces. I plugged in more of the peripherals which I had left disconnected to guarantee that they were not causing the problem. Everything was working great.
    Until, that is, today.
Today it's done it again. The computer started up, only to shut down while opening an application. It again did not want to start back up, so I opened it up, disconnected the cable between power supply and logic board, reconnected it, and it started up again, only to shut down before full start-up. I again disconnected the cable, blew out the connections, reconnected and started again, and it shut off just after choosing an application to open.
So.... I'm reasonably convinced that the culprit is the power supply. I now ask those in the know if this seems like a logical conclusion, if this has ever been seen before, what the reason is for its seemingly random decisions to work/not work, and if my only choice to fix this computer now puts me in the market for a new power supply.
And of course, your help is so very appreciated.
P.S. I know that this thread belongs in the MDD section. My apologies for not noticing that such a section existed before throwing thread on the forum. You may ridicule me as you feel proper.

  • Power Mac G4 MDD Random Power Shut Down

I am located in Thailand and have a Power Mac G4 purchased in November 2003. Last month the computer shut-down at random times and during various types of operations. CPU and hard drive temperatures were well within range, the installed battery tested at 3.5 volts. A new UPS was purchased with surge protection, no software was provided or appeared necessary. Often times the computer would re-start if I let it set for 30 minutes or more. Sometimes if the power plug was removed and re-inserted or the UPS re-set, the computer would start.
Associated hardware consists of Canon Printer, Mac keyboard, Kensington turbo ball, stand alone backup hard disk, flash card reader, ViewSonic moniter (8 to 10 years old), flash card reader, USB hub and audio system. Am connected to the internet via a router with one other computers on the line.
The problem has occurred with and without the attached hardware except for the monitor, keyboard and turbo ball which had to be attached to operate. The keyboard, turbo ball and computer where serviced by local Apple service center. The keyboard and turbo ball checked out OK. After sever attempts since the shutdowns were random and could not be forced, the service center after much testing and waiting decided the logic board need replacement which was done (400+ USD). A new power supply was ordered but they stated it did not need replacement.
Since the new logic board was installed and run for three days with no problem, the computer was returned with 90 day warranty. The problem almost immediately returned but has run OK for long periods of time before a random shut-down occurs. The shop was contacted and we are continuing to observe the problem but I hate to give up the use of my only computer for another month, like the last repair.
The following chart is a play by play account since the repairs.
The shop and I are completely stumped and any comments would be appreciated

Troubleshooting: My computer won't turn on
Power or other problems related to unexpected system sleep, shutdown, lights or fans call for an SMC reset. Read all the steps.
    Before Resetting the SMC
Try each of the following steps in this order before you reset the SMC. Test the issue after completing each troubleshooting step to determine if the issue still occurs.
Press Command + Option + Escape to force quit any application that is not responding.
Put your Mac to sleep by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Sleep. Wake the computer after it has gone to sleep.
Restart your Mac by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Restart.
Shut down your Mac by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Shut Down.
Resetting the SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own
    Shut down the computer.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if it's not already connected.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.

  • ITunes Self-Shut Down

I was usingiTunes and it shut it's self down after one of my playing tracks started skipping then and error came up and siad, iTunes malfunction, Send Error Report, Don't Send. I chose to send the report and nothing happened then I went back onto iTunes and found that the money I had in my account was gone...all of it. Can anyone help me?
It was also money from a gift card so I tried to re-redeem it and it said it already was redeemed so now I don't know what to do.

    That sounds like malware.
Go do an ewido scan. It is catching a nasty Windows problem that Norton and mcAfee and other are missing, that messes with iTunes.

That is classic malware infection behavior: something works and then suddenly stops. You might want to curtail your instant messaging, a common source of infestation.

  • G5 Dual @ GHz Shuts down completely when using Compresor 2

Has anyone else encountered this? I was having this problem with Compressor 1.2 in Panther, and I thought upgrading to Tiger and Compressor 2 had solved it, but it has come back.
when I process a particularly intense video file to MPEG-2, no matter how I do it (from within FCP, QuickTime or Compressor) the system will do a hard shutdown.
Not a crash, but an actual power down.
Apple reps looked at this before, but could not replicate it. I never encountered this until Compressor came out.

Maybe your box is overheating. You could try (1) lowering the compression job priority in case OS X has trouble running it's fan control timely when there's compression to do, (2) altering the cpu performance settings from energy saver preferences, (3) putting your box into fridge or removing the warm blanket around it

  • Mac is slow to shut down anymore

My MDD no longer shuts down as quickly as it used to; instead of a few moments, I get the blue screen and the spinning thing for a couple of minutes before it completes the shutdown. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

try creating different user, log in as different user and see what happens.
if it works normally, than the issue is with the user account - startup items, preferences etc.
if it is not wotking properly with the new user, could be OS or hard drive issue.

  • MDD refuses to sleep or shut down...

    Hi,
My mother is having a very frustrating problem with her MDD powermac. It refuses to shutdown or sleep. When I tell it to sleep, the screen goes black, and the fans stop. However, right as the fans stop, they start back up again and the computer is right back where it was. When I tell it to shut down, the computer goes through the shutdown process and restarts instead.
I've repaired the permissions, disk looks okay, reset the PRAM, unplugged all peripherals (except the monitor - third party with no hubs or computer control). I have also checked the engery saver options for auto power on on power failure.
Any ideas on what could be causing this or where to even start?

    Hi-
Have you tried a SAfe mode boot? Hold Shift whike starting. Safe mode takes a bit longer to boot than a regular boot, as various system checks/repairs are performed. Once in Safe mode, see if the sleep/shut down functions. If so, then it is probably a Startup item.
Another check would be trying a different user account. Setting up a new account with admin privledges is best. If sleep/shut down work in the new user account, then the problem is a Login item.
    Troubleshooting Startup and Login Items.
If this fails to help ID/resolve the problem, an Archive and install would probably be enough.
Without testing for startup/login item conflict, an Archive and Install will carry over any existing problems.

  • Laptop shuts down by its self and i dont know why

my laptop just out of no where just shuts down for no reason at all and i want to know why its doing this for?? so if i have to get it fixed i could, it was bought on February 15 2007 so it is a little older but other then it just shutting down by it self it works really great.

The failure description is vague, so it would be hard to tell you exactly what is happening.  What happens when it shuts down?  Are there any error messages when it restarts?  Does there seem to be an excess of heat at the vents or under the system when it shuts down?  Are you using the computer on a solid surface, or on your lab, blanket, etc?  Can you hear the internal fan running?  How long has it been since this computer has been serviced?
If the computer has not been serviced since new, then it probably needs to be taken apart, cleaned, and have fresh thermal compound applied to the processor.

My nephew knocked my iPad off the bed and now the volume is not working also it shuts down by its self i have warranty for it can I get it fixed? Or do I get a new one?

The warranty is a limited manufacturer's warranty, not insurance. The warranty does not cover accidental damage.

  • My 15" Macbook Pro, shuts down by it self (Random occurrence).

My 15" Macbook Pro, shuts down (randomly) by it self, some times it will not turn on, and some other times (very rarely) the fans go on “very loudly” the second I turn it on. But the computer, does not turn on at all, even with the battery fully charged and the fans runing full blast.
Some other times, it will not wake up. It will only turn on or wake up if connected to the power adapter, even if the battery is fully charged.
I have already reset (a couple times) de firmware, the smc and he pmu and the problem persists.
Al this goes on randomly and unpredictably. Some times it works just fine for 4 or 5 days and the suddenly something happens.
I also think that some times the computer runs extremely hot.

    15' MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

I have the same thing happening with a new macbook I bought my wife and I called apple today and after going back and forth between apple care and apple customer service they are shipping me out a new replacement macbook as it is less than 30 days since I bought it. I am waiting for their email with the Fed ex info so I can send this one back and then they will send out the new one.
If it is still in warranty I suggest you call Apple customer service and let them know how bad it is and insist on a new one!
This one also reboots at the slightest movement and it took me several tries to finally log in on it tonight to delete all the user accounts before I send it back!
Hopefully the replacement one is glitch free!

  • Dual 2.3 GHz G5 suddenly shutting down

We have a Dual 2.3 GHz G5 (production week 10/29/05, Power PPC 970 v.3.0, with 2.5 GHz RAM), running OS 10.4.8. This machine has started to suddenly shut down - like someone pulled the plug with no warning.
After turning itself off like that, we need to wait around 20 minutes before it'll start up again and keep running. Once it has shut itself off, we cannot get to the logon screen without it shutting off suddenly again. After letting it cool down for 20 minutes, it'll run again. So it seems to be heat related in some way.
I've run Temperature Monitor and iStat, and everything looks OK. Of course TechTool Deluxe didn't find anything (does it ever?).
The machine will run for 2-3 hours under load just fine, but will suddenly click and shut off at some point - even when not under a load.
I've checked the System logs and Console logs and can see nothing, except once the system log reported "ApplePMU::PMU forced shutdown, cause = -122"
The other times there was no log entry, like it shut down too fast for the log to be written.
Is the power supply going bad? Is there a temperature sensor which is too sensitive?
We'd appreciate any help or suggestions.

o maybe there is something RAM related, but I can't
imagine that RAM would shut the machine completely
    off. Can it?
I believe the problem is thermal related. You may have a processor acting up. Try running Hardware Monitor once, and see what your internal temps are running.

  • My dual 1.8 ghz G5 intermittently shuts down

I just purchased a second hand dual 1.8 ghz G5 tower that shut down on me a week ago. I opened it up, pulled out the fan assembly and hard rive, put back in and then it ran fine for about a week. Today it shut down again and every time I would try to restart it I would get the chime...the Apple logo would briefly appear, then shutdown again.
I tried resetting the motherboard PMU (is it). Managed to boot from the Hardware Test CD and ran the short test...everything ran fine then same shutdown problem when trying a reboot.
Does this sound like any problem that might be inherent to these models?
Any help much appreciated ...then it's a trip to the dealer....sigh
    Dave

    Dave Highet-
I don't know if this problem is inherent, but there are a couple of things that can cause it to shut down right away. Usually that is the power supply or the mother board. Both can be fairly expensive to fix.
If you have any recourse at all with the seller I would suggest taking that path and get it replaced if possible. This machine won't fix itself and the problem won't go away until it is fixed.

  • G5 dual 1.8 WON'T shut down with TIGER 10.4.7

Hi all. Updated the G5 dual with Tiger, did the 10.4.7 combo update and it still won't shut down. Have to hold the power button. I've tried creating a new administrator but to no avail. Logging out won't do it either. I upgraded from 10.3.9 for music software reasons--too bad I was "forced up" since 10.3.9 worked fine. My G4 laptop 1.33 has no issues with Tiger at all.
    Any suggestions??

    Contributed by Fumiaki Kawashima a Level 4 here;
There are many reasons to become unable shutting down or restarting from Apple Menu. Some were explained by other posters.
Most importantly, loginwindow (the parent process is launchd.) close out the user session, continue to set the device permissions and user preferences to their defaults in a restart action, or the process power off the system in a shutdown action. However, the issue proves that somewhere in those routines cannot be performed.
Users authentication system seems to be intact because you can restart or shutdown from the login window. However, the admin account authenticated by the Tiger security systems could confuse somehow and affect loginwindow process for setting up the user environment. This may result in interfering with the process for the shutdown and restart mentioned above.
Test if you can shutdown from the keyboard-- Holding down controloptioncommand keys, and then press the eject key.
Check if the loginwindow plists are corrupted. To do this test, remove the followings to temporary folders on the desktop, and shutdown from the keyboard shortcut combination. Restart the computer to test the recurrence.
    /Library/Preferences/com.apple.loginwindow.plist
    /Users/HOME/Library/Preferences/com.apple.loginwindow.plist
Try disabling Login Items for third-party applications via the Accounts system preference, if any.
Verify whether any third-party kernel extensions (including device drivers) interfere with the loginwindow hooks process-- Start up with a Safe-mode, then test the Restart from Apple Menu to see whether it works. Also, boot into a Single-user mode, and test if "reboot" command is available from the BSD layer. The I/O Kit API for software developers provides a shutdown hook so that ".kext" troubleshooting may need to be considered. Besides, some bad programmed extension may not be unloaded automatically at a shutdown or restart.
If the computer is configured with Irish language Input method and/or third-party Irish keyboard, try disabling them to test.
A third-party application or custom script may interfere with the loginwindow hooks for the Shut Down or Restart. For example, if you install an application that prevents casually powering down a system, the Shut Down and Restart buttons may not work. Also, if you install a P2P file sharing application, try uninstalling it.
As last resorts, troubleshoot a bad RAM and consider "Erase and Install" solution.
    OPTION:
Post a part of system.log that indicates events from "localhost kernel[0]: standard timeslicing quantum is 10000 us" to the next same line.
This may help to narrow down because restarting or shutting down the system process can initiate the procedure programmatically by sending an appropriate Apple event to Mac OS X Tiger's system process (loginwindow).
Likewise, check console.log whether any failures is reported.
    Corrections:
Most importantly, the loginwindow (the parent process is launchd.) close out the user session, continue to set the device permissions and user preferences to their defaults in a restart action, or the process power off the system in a shutdown action.
However, the admin account authenticated by the Tiger security systems could confuse somehow and it may impact on the loginwindow process for setting up the user environment. This may result in interfering with the process for the shutdown and restart as mentioned above.
    Addendum:
If you post a copy of system.log, consider to edit the Ethernet interface ID to a fake value.
    API = Application Programming Interface
    Cheers!

  • Macbook pro 2009(unibody) shut down by it self and turn on 30 min later ..

hi i bought a macbook pro mid 2009 (unibody), i change the battery about 4 monts ago (done by montréal apple store) and last week, it start shut down by it self suddenly and dont turn on for half an hour! then, it start like if nothing appen but do it again 20 min later. i checked the fan, it's working properly, no over heat, no water damage, i try to reset the "smc" does'nt seem to have change anything . before a change the battery about 4 month ago, it was doing the same thing but less often and when it was crashing, i had to wait a week sometime two before it was turning on again ! it completly stop when i pay to change the battery ! coul'd it be a bad battery ? im alway's carefull fully discharge the battery before put it on the charge ...

You really shouldn't allow the battery to fully discharge before hooking it up to mains - that does nothing but cause damage to your battery.
If you said that the unit was heating up too much, I would put it down to a thermal shutdown (although you can generally recover from those in 30 minutes or less). As it is, it's difficult to give you a diagnosis over the Internet - if I were you I would take the machine back to the Apple Store and let them run tests on the machine. I think that's the only way you're really going to find the root cause of your problems.
Good luck - let us know what the techs have to say...
