G4 MDD randomly powers UP!

Hey all,
I have a G4 MDD which ran perfectly until now! I recently purchased a Samsung 2333HD tv for my room which I hook my mac up to via vga.
Worked fine to start with, but the next day I couldnt get it to power up. After reading some topics on here I managed to take the PRAM battery out, re-insert and then it worked fine.
Now though, my mac randomly powers up once its shut down!
Gets quite annoying when you hear the fan blasting air at 4am!!!
Any ideas?
Cheers

Well, there are a few things that might wake it...
Energy Saver>Options>Wake for Ethernet Admin access & Restart automatically after Power failure.
Have you replaced the PRAM Battery?
Any cats or mice around?
Have you reset the PMUI once yet, Earlier G3, G4, G5 models...

  • Power Mac G4 MDD Random Power Shut Down

I am located in Thailand and have a Power Mac G4 purchased in November 2003. Last month the computer shut-down at random times and during various types of operations. CPU and hard drive temperatures were well within range, the installed battery tested at 3.5 volts. A new UPS was purchased with surge protection, no software was provided or appeared necessary. Often times the computer would re-start if I let it set for 30 minutes or more. Sometimes if the power plug was removed and re-inserted or the UPS re-set, the computer would start.
Associated hardware consists of Canon Printer, Mac keyboard, Kensington turbo ball, stand alone backup hard disk, flash card reader, ViewSonic moniter (8 to 10 years old), flash card reader, USB hub and audio system. Am connected to the internet via a router with one other computers on the line.
The problem has occurred with and without the attached hardware except for the monitor, keyboard and turbo ball which had to be attached to operate. The keyboard, turbo ball and computer where serviced by local Apple service center. The keyboard and turbo ball checked out OK. After sever attempts since the shutdowns were random and could not be forced, the service center after much testing and waiting decided the logic board need replacement which was done (400+ USD). A new power supply was ordered but they stated it did not need replacement.
Since the new logic board was installed and run for three days with no problem, the computer was returned with 90 day warranty. The problem almost immediately returned but has run OK for long periods of time before a random shut-down occurs. The shop was contacted and we are continuing to observe the problem but I hate to give up the use of my only computer for another month, like the last repair.
The following chart is a play by play account since the repairs.
The shop and I are completely stumped and any comments would be appreciated

    Hi-
    Welcome to Discussions!
Replace the power cord. If this doesn't alleviate the condition, (from your description) I would consider the PSU to be the most likely suspect.

  • A1107 Randomly Powering Down/Freezing

Hi all, I have a growing problem with my A1107 tablet running ICS.  It randomly powers down and it has been getting progressively worse, first starting at 30% few and far between but going to 50% and now 80% plus more often.  It also seems to freeze randomly, usually while charging but not always. [Edit]  The freezing seems to happen more often than not when in standby mode.
I am very handy and resourceful with searches and have spent countless hours searching which has lead to a few troubleshoots.  These are what I have tried so far.  The first being cleaning up my system resources thinking that too much running at once was draining the system and overloading it.  It definitely helped the system out as it runs a lot more smoothly and efficiently now but both problems still persist.  I tried a full factory reset through recovery mode and it seemed fine for a while (maybe a day at most) but the problem arose again.  The last method I am still in the middle of but I do not have much hope for, still I will report back either way.  It is using Airplane mode since I do not use this device on a network, only over Wifi and Cell Standby was a huge resource hog because of this.  I read many posts for other devices claiming this caused them problems so I thought I would give it a try.
Anyways, that is my conundrum and I would greatly appreciate any help.  Thanks!
[Edit]  Confirmed, Airplane Mode did absolutely no good.  It powered down this time with over 90% battery life.  Help please, this problem is getting seriously annoying.
[Edit]  WOW, now it just powered down while plugged in to the charger AND 98% power.  I just don't understand this.  Anyone?
I feel somewhat like an inverse tangent function that's approaching an asymptote.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Well, after thinking about it more I realized that the problem seems to be that for some reason or other the system isn't registering the device getting charged, even though the battery indicator says it is charged (90%, 98%, or whatever). The reason it got progressively worse (first starting at @50%, then at 80% and so on) was because even though the battery was getting charged the system was being told that it hadn't. That is why eventually it would power down almost as soon as it turned on, just like it would if the battery were completely dead. The reason I know that is not completely dead and not the battery indicator that is in error is because I could boot into recovery mode and stay in that for well over an hour, despite the fact even that the device will not boot into recovery mode if it is <30% or whatever.
So, I guess the best question would be.......what part of the system communicates between it and the battery? The part that says "no/low power so shut down"?
I feel somewhat like an inverse tangent function that's approaching an asymptote.

  • My MacBook Pro Randomly Powered On

I was sitting across the room and my MacBook Pro just randomly powered on. The screen was shut and the only things connected to it were an ethernet cable and the power cable. I don't have wake-on-lan configured for it either so that couldn't be the case. Has this happened to anyone or has anyone heard of this happening?

I too have found my MBP randomly powering on at night. It is not set for auto wake-up nor to wake at ethernet access/administrator. It's happened at least twice, both before and after 10.5.2. The first time, I had shut the lid (but the machine was definitely off, I know the sound of a machine completely off), and I just happened to hear the fan whirring, it was pretty hot and in a weird testing mode. It just happened again, this time with the lid open, though not in the testing mode. I'm leaving the lid up at nights so it doesn't do it and overheat. It's only late at night, and only occasionally. But kinda surreal.

  • 7921Gs randomly powering down

I have two users who have 7921G's with a shared extension as their only extensions.  The phones are registered to the same call manager subscriber and are running phone load CP7921G-1.4.1SR1, which is the default load we are currently using.
They are reporting that the devices are randomly powering down.  One user states that she can hang up from a call, set it on the desk, and not touch it and it will power down after several minutes (at least once a day).  She said she has to press and hold the power button and go through the entire boot-up sequence to use the phone again.
They also report that the two phones can be side by side, and one phone will ring, but the other will not ring.
We have not had any other users reporting similar issues.
Unfortunately, I am supporting this site from a remote office, so can not get my hands on the phones.
Has anyone seen this behaviour before?

There is a feature in CUCM that can be enabled where the phone will power off when it's put on AC power.
Check to see if that is enabled.
Also are you sure it has powered off?
    Check CUCM and WLAN status.
Other than that try a different battery or phone.

  • My iPhone 4S keeps randomly powering off

Do you know why my iPhone 4S keeps randomly powering off?  I have rebricked my phone and it still does this.

Are you using a case with your iPhone? It could be holding down the power button on the top of the iPhone.
You can try restoring the iPhone as a new device, if that doesn't do it send it in for service.

  • MacBook Air Late 2012 randomly powers off. Won't stay on longer than 2 minutes.

I have a MacBook Air late 2012 model.
Every time I try to Reinstall OSX or try to run any diagnostics. It wont stay on long enough to finish anything. Some times it wont come on when you press the power key. I just does the Apple chime and then it could be 5 seconds or 2 mins but it always powers off.
I called Apple because the SSD was recalled for that year and the symptoms of a failing hard drive is random rebooting or powering off. So apple said they would fix it for free.
I am not near an apple store so I took it to an Apple licensed Technician to get the new SSD.  I got a call a few days later saying that the SSD was fine but I need a new Logic Board. He said it was the most expensive part of the laptop and that sounded very convenient for him that I need the most expensive part, about $478.00.
I would like to know the symptoms of a Failing Logic Board and the SSD
I can never get a straight answer from reading Apples forums.
This laptop was 1300.00 new and I had to buy it from my Ex again for 200.00 when she couldn't fix it. So im tired of putting money in a laptop that cant even run games or hold my entire iTunes Library lol.
If anyone has had this same problem let me know.
I'm afraid that its an easy fix and they are just trying to get more money.

  • IPhone 5 not charging and randomly powering down

I've had this phone since Christmas. This started about a week ago. I noticed that my phone was randomly shutting off, no matter what power level it was at. Then within the week it started not charging when plugged in. I've tried multiple lightning cables and power sources, with only my car charger remotely working (Verizon product). It will go up about 7% then stop. This morning I noticed when I turned it back on after one of it's random power offs, that the edges of the screen were flickering. I've tried rebooting it and restoring it and nothing has helped. Has anyone else had this problem? Am I going to have to pay for a new phone?

    You're welcome.
The exchange under warranty remains under the same warranty period as your original purchase or 90 days from today, whichever is longer.

  • Qosmio X775 3DV80 random powering down

I have a new computer, 05/05/12, and it has recently started to power down by itself this past week and a half. I have not installed any new programs at the time the incidents began and once the computer reset to an earlier restore date since then. I read some post here about event logs and could not see anything really there at the time of the fault, some when rebooting after. I installed Sony software and Canon also when I received the computer, any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you Kevin

SO FAR SO GOOD FIX GUIDE-
If you own a Toshiba Qosmio laptop and you are having problems with it powering down for no reason, try this.
    1) Unplug all the wires and remove battery
    2) Hold down power button for 30 seconds
    3) Plug everything back in and start it up
    4) Hold F2 to enter boot menu
    5) Go to the Advance Tab
    6) Set Execute Disable Bit to Not Available
    7) F10 to save and exit
     SO FAR SO GOOD!

  • Randomly powering off

My Macbook keeps shutting off randomly. When it turns back on sometimes the screen is black, sometimes it beeps, and sometimes it just works. What should I do until I can bring it to my IT Desk at school or to an Apple store.

Do this will NOT disable use of the BlackBerry, just no media card.
What could a case have to do with this?
I've seen other users report their keyboard locking up with certain cases in use, and for some a too tight case will lock the orientation of the screen.
You could also try placing a business card or a folded sheet of normal paper cut to size over the battery, and replace the rear battery door. Perhaps the battery is not hold in place firmly.

  • OS 3.1.2 iPhone randomly powers off

I've had my iPhone for 2 weeks and updated to the latest firmware version as soon as it came out. I've had 3 occasions where I have taken my iPhone out of my pocket to find that it's powered itself off. It doesn't appear to have locked up as it powers on as normal. The battery is always fully or well charged.
Has anyone else seen this with this firmware?

I too have had this happen. I assume its an issue with the firmware update (my iPhone is less then a week old so I doubt very much it's a faulty battery). It seems to be in regard to the batter meter however. Just now it turned itself off (the battery was 90%) and turning it back on the battery read 100%.
The only other explanation I can think of is that I might have an app that's running in the background doing this. But it's never shut down when in any third-party apps, just in mail, messages or the home screen.
I'm blaming the new OS. Heaps of people have reported battery issues (in terms of lifespan etc) and shutdowns after the upgrade. Any suggestions? Should we strip back to the previous OS? And how is that achieved?

  • Random powering down, freezing, and restarting?

My iPod is 2nd generation and I've had it for a year or two. Recently, it has been freezing on the screen where you enter your passcode either before or after I enter the code. It also decides to restart itself when I press the hold button. It goes into the hold mode for a short time, then the black screen pops up with the Apple logo on it without me pressing anything. It basically reboots itself when I put it in hold. Sometimes, this occurs multiple times, and after it restarts itself, it turns off and restarts again. It's like it has a mind of it's own. Does anyone have a problem like this and is there any solution to it?
I would like to say that I have not yet purchased the software update, and so I still have the software the iPod came with. Could this contribute to it?

I'm having the same problem with a 2g 32gb. It randomly shuts down in the middle of whatever you're doing. The only way to start it again is to hold the home and power button down to reset. Then it may work for an 1hr or 1day, who knows. I have done a full reset and erased everything starting from scratch but it still happens
Has no one solved the problem as this seems to have going on for ages, by the look of the posts.

  • IMac, update causing black screen and randomly powers off...?

I've seen many comment on this with few solutions.  It had never occurred until yesterday afternoon after the latest security update for Mavericks, 2014-005 v.1, was loaded and the system was rebooted.  After that moment the mac has been unusable.  It will start and after user log on, will black screen, sometimes still running and other times instantly powered off.  I have followed resetting the PRAM, and SMC procedures with no change and have booted into safe mode in order to examine the system and it is just as unstable there.  The times I have gotten it booted and running, attempting to access an earlier Time Machine backup, but before I can start reload it goes black.  The same goes while trying to check the sleep mode and security settings.  Unless this is an amazing coincidence, I believe the latest update has caused this problem and has for others as I have seen on many conversations.  Can this be uninstalled or does the drive need to get wiped and then reload from the Time Machine?
    Thanks.
    iMac,  A1311  21.5"  Mavericks 10.9.5  Update 2014-005 v.1

Well, initial call into Apple Care and one answer.  "We have no idea what it is, we can get you an appointment at a Genius Bar in 4 days!"  4 days?!  Seriously?  At least they were kind enough to only put me on hold for 30 minutes, AND then transferred me to a "Sr. Care Specialist" who basically blew smoke up my arse only to tell me the same thing... why transfer me at all?
