G4 mdd with marathon G-Rack(computer mounted sideways)

I'm curious to see if anyone else is running an mdd using the now-extinct marathon g-rack rack ears.
First question, is it safe to run one of these sideways as far as cooling is concerned? I know these things have problems with overheating, and being that there's only one temp sensor I'm curious about airflow to the rest of the computer. I have it mounted so the motherboard is at the bottom. CPU temps are around 40 celsius at idle(up about 5 degrees Celsius from what they were standing up). I'd really like to mount it the other way, this would give me easy access for servicing as the door would be on the top of it when slide out from the rack, but I'm concerned about having the motherboard being at the highest point of the case.
Another question, has anyone else noticed that the only thing holding the plastic front panel on is the handles?(These get removed when installing the rack rails). Kind of cheesy, this was never a problem with my sawtooth, seems weird that apple would do this in a later model.
The most annoying thing about using a g-rack is that it's a pain to get the rack screws started, very awkward. I solved this problem by mounting some ball bearing drawer slides to the G-rack and my server rack. When all was said and done, I wouldn't do it again, it was a major pain to get everything to line up properly. But, it's very easy to quickly slide the g4 out of my rack if I need to get inside it for something. Marathon did make a sliding rail kit for these, but it's not likely something that would be easy to find since they have now gone out of business.

Well, I kind of already knew all this, but ummm.... Thanx for the response!
To answer your questions.
There really is no space for additional PCI.
3 PCI cards installed which handle all the audio processing and I/O for the Pro Tools system. I think there is 4 PCI? No? I intend to use the final as a host for SCSI HDD's of which I have a rackmount Array.
Being that bandwidth IS limited, I'd rather it be dedicated to Pro Tools, rather than system resources. Even if it means rediculous write times I guess. No hope then?
The 40 GB is not a problem, as There are only 2 pieces of software I have installed on the machine, and they are both Pro Tools related, that's all I need. It's just there to run the OS and Software. I have a lot of free space. I also don't save anything to the 40, it all goes to the external or to the Audio drive. (Pro Tools writes to a seperate 'Audio' hard drive to better perform, rather than recording to the system drive, it will, but doesn't like to)
So I take it my MDD is only FW400? I know it's dual bootable if that tells you anything.
Just got your edit, another cat just told me about Patchburn on another forum. Just downloaded it, will try it later this week. He uses the same Pro Tools system as this and it works for him. It's a 3rd party patch, and while the Pioneer 155 is not really 3rd party, I suppose it is being it is not native to the machine. We'll see. He's using a 111 without issue.
How can I 'test' the battery. Very well may not be ok. Probably not ok. when it sits off for a long time it boots up with the system date all jacked.

  • Ipod shows folder with exclamation point and computer won't recognize

My ipod resets itself each time that I try to turn it on, and then flashes the folder with the exclamation point. I have tried to restore it and update software but the computer won't recognize it. A few days before it broke the ipod would skip through some songs that it was unable to play for some reason, and now it makes a clicking sound when trying to start up. Did it die, or is there a way to fix this?

    Hello,
If a sad iPod icon or an exclamation point and folder icon appears on your iPod’s screen, or with sounds of clicking or HD whirring, it is usually the sign of a hard drive problem and you have the power to do something about it now. Your silver bullet of resolving your iPod issue – is to restore your iPod to factory settings.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=60983
If you're having trouble, try these steps at different levels one at a time until the issue is resolved. These steps will often whip your iPod back into shape.
Make sure you do all the following “TRYs”
    A. Try to wait 30 minutes while iPod is charging.
    B. Try another FireWire or USB through Dock Connector cable.
    C. Try another FireWire or USB port on your computer .
    D. Try to disconnect all devices from your computer's FireWire and USB ports.
    E. Try to download and install the latest version of iPod software and iTunes
    http://www.apple.com/ipod/download/
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
    F. Try these five steps (known as the five Rs) and it would conquer most iPod issues.
    http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/five_rs/
    G. Try to put the iPod into Disk Mode if it fails to appear on the desktop
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93651
If none of these steps address the issue, you may need to go to Intermediate level listed below in logical order. Check from the top of the lists to see if that is what keeping iPod from appearing on your computer in order for doing the Restore.
    Intermediate Level
    A. Try to connect your iPod with another computer with the iPod updater pre-installed.
    B. Still can’t see your iPod, put it in Disk Mode and connect with a computer, instead of doing a Restore on iPod Updater. Go and format the iPod instead.
    For Mac computer
    1. Open the disk utility, hope your iPod appears there (left hand side), highlight it
    2. Go to Tab “Partition”, click either “Delete” or “Partition”, if fails, skip this step and go to 3
    3. Go to Tab “Erase” , choose Volume Format as “MAC OS Extended (Journaled), and click Erase, again if fails, skip it and go to 4
    4. Same as step 3, but open the “Security Options....” and choose “Zero Out Data” before click Erase. It will take 1 to 2 hours to complete.
    5. Eject your iPod and do a Reset
    6. Open the iPod Updater and click “Restore”
    For Window computer
    Go to folder “My Computer”
Hope you can see your iPod there and right click on the iPod
Choose “Format”. Ensure the settings are at “Default” and that “Quick Format” is not checked
    Now select “Format”
Eject your iPod and do a Reset
Open the iPod Updater and click “Restore”
In case you do not manage to do a “Format” on a window computer, try to use some 3rd party disk utility software, e.g.“Partition Magic”.
    C. Windows users having trouble with their iPods should locate a Mac user. In many cases when an iPod won't show up on a PC that it will show up on the Mac. Then it can be restored. When the PC user returns to his computer the iPod will be recognized by the PC, reformatted for the PC, and usable again. By the way, it works in reverse too. A Mac user often can get his iPod back by connecting it to a PC and restoring it.
    Tips
    a. It does not matter whether the format is completed or not, the key is to erase (or partly) the corrupted firmware files on the Hard Drive of the iPod. After that, when the iPod re-connected with a computer, it will be recognized as an fresh external hard drive, it will show up on the iPod updater.
    b. It is not a difficult issue for a Mac user to find a window base computer, for a PC user, if they can’t find any Mac user, they can go to a nearest Apple Shop for a favor.
    c. You may need to switch around the PC and Mac, try to do several attempts between “Format” and “Restore”
    Advance Level
    A. Diagnostic mode solution
If you have tried trouble shooting your iPod to no avail after all the steps above, chances are your iPod has a hardware problem. The iPod's built-in Diagnostic Mode is a quick and easy way to determine if you have a "bad" iPod.
You need to restart your iPod before putting it into Diagnostic Mode. Check that your hold switch is off by sliding the switch away from the headphone jack. Toggle it on and off to be safe.
Press and hold the following combination of buttons simultaneously for approximately 10 seconds to reset the iPod.
    iPod 1G to 3G: "Menu" and "Play/Pause"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Menu" and "Select"
The Apple logo will appear and you should feel the hard drive spinning up. Press and hold the following sequence of buttons:
iPod 1G to 3G: "REW", "FFW" and "Select"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Back" and "Select"
You will hear an audible chirp sound (3G models and higher) and the Apple logo should appear backwards. You are now in Diagnostic Mode. Navigate the list of tests using "REW" and "FFW". The scroll wheel will not function while in diagnostic mode. For further details on Diagnostic mode can be found at http://www.methodshop.com/mp3/ipodsupport/diagnosticmode/
Try to do the 5in1, HDD R/W and HDD scan tests. Some successful cases have been reported after the running the few tests under the Diagnostic mode. In case it does not work in your case, and the scan tests reports show some errors then it proves your iPod has a hardware problem and it needs a repairing service.
    B. Format your iPod with a start disk
I have not tried this solution myself, I heard that there were few successful cases that the users managed to get their iPod (you must put your iPod in disk mode before connecting with a computer) mounted by the computer, which was booted by a system startup disk. For Mac, you can use the Disk Utility (on the Tiger OS system disk), for PC user, you can use the window OS system disk. Try to find a way to reformat your iPod, again it does not matter which format (FAT32, NTFS or HFS+) you choose, the key is to erase the corrupted system files on the iPod. Then eject your iPod and do a Reset to switch out from Disk Mode. Reboot your computer at the normal way, connect your iPod back with it, open the iPod updater, and hopefully your iPod will appear there for the Restore.
If none of these steps address the issue, your iPod may need to be repaired.
Consider setting up a mail-in repair for your iPod http://depot.info.apple.com/ipod/
Or visit your local Apple Retail Store http://www.apple.com/retail/
In case your iPod is no longer covered by the warranty and you want to find a second repairing company, you can try iPodResQ at your own risk
    http://www.ipodresq.com/index.php
Just in case that you are at the following situation
    Your iPod warranty is expired
You don’t want to pay any service charges
You are prepared to buy a new one
You can’t accept the re-sell value of your broken iPod
Rather than leave your iPod as paper-weight or throw it away.
You can try the following, but again, only do it as your last resort and at your own risk.
Warning ! – It may or may not manage to solve your problem, and with a risk that you may further damage your iPod, which end up as an expensive paper weight or you need to pay more higher repairing cost. Therefore, please re-consider again whether you want to try the next level
    Last Resort Level
    1. . Disconnecting the Hard Drive and battery inside the iPod – Warning !! Your iPod warranty will be waived once you open the iPod.
In Hong Kong there are some electronic shops offering an iPod service for Sad iPod, the first thing they do is to open up the iPod’s case and disconnecting the battery and the Hard Drive from the main board of the iPod. Wait for 5-10 minutes and reconnecting them back. The reason behind which I can think of is to do a fully reset of a processor of the iPod. In case you want do it itself and you believe that you are good on fixing the electronics devices and have experience to deal with small bits of electronic parts, then you can read the following of how to open the iPod case for battery replacement (with pictures)
    http://www.kokopellimusic.us/KM_instructions.htm
Have I tried this myself? No, I am afraid to do it myself as I am squeamish about tinkering inside electronic devices, I have few experiences that either I broke the parts (which are normally tiny or fragile) or failed to put the parts back to the main case. Therefore, I agree with suggestion to have it fixed by a Pro.

  • My iphone 4 with IOS 5 will not mount in iTunes. Please help.

my iphone 4 with IOS 5 will not mount in iTunes. I think it's due to icloud but i turned icloud off on my phone. Now music in my itunes that i have ripped from CDs cannot be put onto my phone. My iPhone will charge when lugged into my mac book pro but will not mount in iTunes. Also I have Snow leopard on my laptop. Can anyone help.

I have precisely the same problem.  The Mac mini will not see the iPhone in iTunes, Disk Utility or Image Capture.  My MacBook Air, with a different iTunes library cannot see it either but they can both see my iPad & iPods.
I have tried restarting the computer with only the iPhone connected via USB.  No help.  I do not see the point in re-loading iTunes if my other machine cannot see it but can see other iOS devices.
All software is up to date on machines & iOS devices.

  • Will a Nano with a dead battery still mount?

Will a Nano with a dead battery still mount? It won't mount and may have a dead battery. If plugged into the computer shouldn't it mount even if it has a dead battery? My son saw the battery icon very briefly just before it went dead. Tried reset, restore, etc, everything. thanks

awooll's two links gave suggestions which I've aready tried. But the second link to an Apple page had this note which I had not seen before:
"Only iPod mini can get power from a high-powered USB port using the supplied cable."
So, does that mean that a perfectly functional nano with a dead battery won't mount? It looks like that's what Apple is saying.
    thanks
p.s. the computer we are trying to mount the nano on is an iMac bought about 6 months ago...Intel based I guess.

    Do you mean iTunes library?
iTunes account is what you use to make iTunes purcahses.
iTunes library is what is on your computer.
It says my phone can only be set up woth one itunes account. How do I remove the previous account?
No, it tells you it can only be sync'd with one iTunes library.
Simplest way is to copy the entire /Music/iTunes/ folder (thisis the iTunes library) from old computer to new computer.

    Yes, windows to Mac too.
iTunes: How to move [or copy] your music [library] to a new computer [or another drive] - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527
Quick answer if you use iTunes' default preferences settings:  Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the other drive.  Open iTunes and immediately hold down the Option (alt) key (shift on Windows), then guide it to the new location of the library.

I have just noticed the other discussion points - mine is set to Australia.
Dear Apple - as the day that the week starts on can depend on country and religion - how about making it an option that the user can change????

I believe the week view on the iPhone is handled by the Region settings in the phone. I am not aware of any other manner to change it, as you can with Outlook.

  • Synching with more than one computer and attempting to delete more than one

Rage is not the word. I have been having the worst time with this thing! UGH! 1st I have more than one computer that has different music on each, but this thing will only sync with 1 and delete anything from another library already added. CRAZY! Second I wanted to rip my cds to my computer without being connected to the internet and itunes won't recong the music added at a later time. I have to be connected to the internet for it to Id the music as I am ripping...CRAZY! Then I was attempting to delete the duplicated music that was not Id and it would only allow me to delete one song at a time...CRAZY! Is there a way to have this thing synch with more than 1 computer? Delete songs in a group and not everything in sight. If so how and if anyone has any remedies for the rest of this craziness I would be most appreciative. I took me forever to even figure how to get to the point to post this. I beginning to feel very sorry I bought this thing. I thought I could rip my cds, and use my work and home computers to synch with it. Please someone tell me I wasn't wrong for making this assumption. Will I be able to sych with other ipods? I bought this thing thinking I could was I wrong. I haven't even attempted that yet. I have an 80 GB ipod

"I have more than one computer that has different music on each, but this thing will only sync with 1 and delete anything from another library already added"
You can't "sync" that is automatically update an iPod from multiple libraries or computers. If you want to connect and use an iPod on more than one computer you need to change the update preference in the iPod Summary tab to "Manually manage music and videos" and click Apply.
    Using iPod with Multiple computers
    Managing content manually on iPod
"I have to be connected to the internet for it to Id the music as I am ripping"
That's correct, iTunes (and other music programs) downloads the information from an online database that contains the details of many thousands of CDs.
"Delete songs in a group and not everything in sight"
Click on the first track you want to delete in a list, hold down the shift key and click on the last one, this highlights everything in between. Press the delete key
"Will I be able to sych with other ipods?"
What do you want to sync with other iPods, iTunes? You can't sync one iPod with another, you can only update from iTunes. If you are adding a second iPod for your own use, just connect the new iPod to your computer and follow the on screen instructions. It will update from your existing library. Depending on the size of your library and the type of iPod you choose you can have it update all songs and playlists, selected playlists only or you can manage it manually. If the email address you want to use is being used as the primary email address on a different ID you have to manage that ID and change it to a different primary email address.  This explains how: Change your Apple ID - Apple Support.
If it is being used as an alternate or rescue address on a different ID, you manage the ID and either remove it or change it to a different email address.  This explains how: Manage your Apple ID primary, rescue, alternate, and notification email addresses - Apple Support.

On your computer go to the control panel (hover in the lower right corner) then programs, add/remove programs
Uninstall iTunes, Apple Mobile Device Service, Apple Application Support then go to apple.com and redownload and reinstall iTunes and try again.
You won't lose any content, you're not deleting that, just the programs that access them.
What is thought to happen is that sometimes a new version of itunes doesn't update the drivers in those other two programs. The only way to update the drivers is to force it by uninstalling the programs which allows itunes to write the correct ones.
My iPad and iPod did exactly the same thing and this is how I fixed it.
