G4 PowerBook  Display Flicker

My display flickers after about an hour of use but if I remove the charger the flickers goes away. Any idea what may be wrong?
Thanks
Dan

This is kind of a long shot but when the flickering starts, pinch the computer on the left hand side (top and bottom), just around or above the speaker. If the flickering stops, you've got a loose connection in there. That's what it was with me. It seemed like a lot of other things but when I put a clamp on that area the screen stopped fritzing all together, so my dad went in and tightened some things up and my screen hasn't gone out since.
The other possibility, though you didn't mention this, is that the powerbooks are famous for breaking of their hinges. Have you had a time when you went to open or close it and it resisted and heard a pop? Cause if you did something in one of the hinges may have broken. The connections and fibers for the screen in the powerbooks are all on the left hand side (hence the loose connection thing previously) and the fibers run up to the screen through the left hand hinge. If something broke inside a hinge then that sharp piece is in there gnawing at the fibers and can cause flickering of the screen. This problem is a lot harder to fix a bit risky I'm told.
Those are the two suggestions given to me when I started having the same problem. Hopefully it's an easy fix! Good luck!

  • Lumia 830 display flicker

    Hii everyone,
I am facing a display flicker issue on my Lumia 830 on zero brightness setting (upto brightness at 20%)which is easily noticeable in the dark & also slight flicker when set to auto-brightness mode similarly in low -light or dark environment where the display automatically adjusts itself to minimal brightness setting.
As per several threads which I came across the display flicker is universal among all the LUMIA range, starting from 520 or 625,720 to the 1020 or the 930.
Is this a firmware issue which can be neutralized by firmware update or is it an display's hardware problem.
Please enlighten me on this issue.
Note: Display is working absolutely fine on medium to high brightness levels,no issue at all.I love the display on my 830.
Hoping for solution from team NOKIA/MS
    Thanks in advance.

Thanks mate for your valuable feedback.
I will surely try a soft reset or a even hard reset maybe. But currently I am on the "fake" Denim firmware which MS rolled out with the LUMIA 830.The real Denim update is yet to hit my 830 in my region.
So i think updating first to the real denim might eliminate this flickering problem. If not ,then as you mentioned will go with a soft or hard reset.
If the issue still persists then will surely proceed for replacement as the device is under warranty.

Does it do this all the time, or say only after Sleeping?

  • Powerbook display problems

The display on my Powerbook display is behaving very oddly - almost as if the display isn't refreshing quickly enough. It intermittently leaves tracks when typing, moving windows, or moving the mouse. Running the extended hardware test found no problems.
It seems to have begun since installing Security Update 2007-006, and updating to iTunes 7.3.1. Could it the beginning of a display failure (the laptop is about 4 years old), or just a strange glitch?

  • PowerBook display - fade & tint over time?

I recently got a Apple Cinema Display 20" for my PowerMac, but also to use with my PowerBook. Side-by-side, the Apple Display is MUCH brighter -- more than I expect would be reasonable. I also notice that the Cinema Display has bright whites, whereas my PowerBook has a sepia/pinkish cast. Whether using the standard caliberation or tweaking my own, I can't seem to find a white point that seems white.
I've thought that the PowerBook display wasn't near as brilliant as I remember when I first got it, but the side-by-side comparison has me thinking that my nagging doubts might have some basis in reality. Something that I should take up with AppleCare, or just something I should live with?

I agree, I am absolutely sick of getting the run-a-round from apple concerning my PB17. My LCD was replace because of dark spots and failed DVI Port. The replacement LCD still has dark spot, It has Dead Pixels (where my original unit had zero) but more frustrating is that the replacement LCD has a nasty yellow/green hue that can't seem to be calibrated out. The Contrast and Color are terrible. Many telephone calls to apple including this notebook being sent in for this color issue 3 times. They say there is nothing wrong. When I look at 17" notebook models from other manufactures, I don't see these issues. This has been in so many times for repair that they should just give me a new unit. In the 20 weeks that I have owned it, I have been without it due to repair issues for 6 weeks and now I am waiting for box to ship it back again for this color hue on the monitor. The most recent return to Apple for repair yielded nothing except for 1 week of down time, and a written report stating that they feel the color issue is from "software corruption" Because of this, I formatted the hard disk drive and did a fresh O/S install only to find that the nasty yellow/green color hue is still present. The unit is scheduled to go back to apple again for this color issue as soon as a box arrives for transport. This is completely uncalled for, especially at the price of this product. I agree that suit should be considered. I know this is happening to others but Apple treats my issue like I am the only person having issues.

  • Horizontal lines on new PowerBook display

Here is my experience with the new PowerBook display/horizontal lines issue. Please post any constructive advice you have that I can try - either to eliminate the problem or to pinpoint the cause more accurately.
I used to own a 15" Powerbook from about 12 months ago, a 1.33GHz model. The display on this was fine. Much better, in terms of brightness and clarity, than my other HP & Dell Windows laptops. When the PowerBook was stolen, one of the main reasons for immediately buying a new replacement PowerBook was the superior display quality.
At the start of November the replacement PowerBook arrived - a 15" hi-res 1.67GHz model. The faint grey horizontal lines covering the whole display were immediately visible. The display is substandard compared to both the previous PowerBook model and my Dell laptop.
Apple Care telephone helpline suggested an NVRAM reset and a PMU reset. Neither of these made any difference.
The PowerBook was then sent back for replacement and a week or so later the new replacement arrived. This also had exactly the same problems.
Apple Care helpline this time said that they could not find any problems with the PowerBook and I should first try the PowerBook connected to an external monitor and secondly take it to an Apple Dealer to show the problem.
I tried it on an external monitor, but unfortunately this is only an old Nokia 15" CRT monitor and though the lines appeared to not be there, the quality of the monitor makes the result inconclusive.
Next up, I will take the PowerBook to the Apple Store. At the same time I have copied "Aqua Blue.bmp" onto my Dell laptop. With the two laptops side by side showing the same image, the defect in the PowerBook display is clearly visible. I hope to be able to take both machines to the Apple Store later this week. I will let the forum know the results...
So, are there any other tips/advice from users as to other tests I can run or other methods to improve the issue?
    Many thanks!

    n2o2,
I don't know what let you think that you will eventually receive an AluBook without stripe : Apple Care let you think that ???????.
I have been reading the stripes topics each day since I ordered my new powerbook, late october. I did not see one single post proving that a "free line" 15" powerbook does exist.
The real evidence would come from someone describing the difference between a "non affected" new powerbook sitting besides an affected one, coming from the same PB generation and with exactely the same LCD profile and screen / Colorsync settings.
I did not see a single story like that among the hundred(s) of posts related to horizontal lines.
I have read one post stating that the screen is "crystal clear" and "sharp". The one I received today could be described like that, but it displays those lines, except from the 8 or 10 upper rows of pixels on the menu bar.
The pb15_problems.png file is a very interesting one to me, as it demonstrates that the lines could clearly be attenuated using a single filter without compromising the sharpness/Brightness of the image.
If I compare side by side my 3months old previous generation powerbook and the new one, I must say that (except for the stripes) there is not much difference in daylight in terms of brightness but a perceptible better brightness in the complete darkness.
Well, if someone could prove that some of the new powerbook do not display this "feature", this would certainly push me to return mine. But, seeing how it is difficult to get this organized, I may not want an exchange but a refund, or an upgrade for a 17".
Please tell us quick if you win this battle.

  • 15" Powerbook Display seems larger than the physical 15"LCD screen

I am not sure whether this is the right place to post this, but my Powerbook display is acting very strangely. This occurred just after I viewed a large photo in my mail application (by clicking "view slideshow"). The photo was sent to me by a trusted colleague so I don't think any funny business is going on.
After viewing the photo and then closing the window, I was surprised to see my desktop "sliding" around when I moved the mouse. It is as if my physical display is smaller that the resolution given in the Display preferences window (which I checked is set for 1280x854). So for example, right now the top Apple Menu is slightly off my LCD top edge.
The other feature is that the text is no longer crisp. This is consistent I think with my display driver (ATI Mobility Radeon 9700) not mapping to the full pixel resolution of the LCD display.
I have never seen anything like this before, even after hooking up to external displays (like a Dell 1680x1050 LCD) or 800x600 LCD projectors. Also have no clue how to "reset" things. Usually a reboot would fix something like this.
Any clues. I did just upgrade to the last Tiger version (10.4.11), so I am not sure if this is related at all to that.

I just did one check. I logged into another user account on my Powerbook, and in that account the display was just fine, so whatever is going on here is some software setting in my own account. However I am not sure how to change back to "normal". Any ideas where display settings in the hardware accelerator might be stored. Playing with the Preferences Display window doesn't make any change.

  • Display flicker when I open the laptop

    Hello.
I have the 15inch powerbook 1.67 second to last revision. not the DL burner.
When I open the screen i get a slight flicker. this can also happens if I move the screen a little (not always but sometimes) like something is pinched in the hinge.
is there something that I can do or is this an actual problem with the display cable?

First, run Software Update to check whether any updates are available. If not, or if they don't resolve the issue, take the machine to an Apple Store or other authorized service provider for testing.

  • Display flicking problem

I have a strange problem with my Powerbook 12'' G4. When the energy reaches 2%, the screen starts to flick(the brightness slighty increases or decreases rapidly). When i plug the AC adapter, the problem disappears. This is odd, since i haven't noticed anything for the first month after buying it.I have asked another person if they saw something strange in the display, and that person replyed that the screen looked fine.
I don't know if this normal or not, but i think this must be related to a energy problem.

Have you looked for your video card/graphics card information in the Device Manager/Display Adapters of your Window 8 64 bit? Or are you looking somewhere else?
    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/where-is-device-manager
That should apply to Windows 8 as well as 8.1 64 bit.
Expand the Display Adapter category to reveal the name of your computer's video card/graphic card. Please tell us the name. But, I am guessing, if you have a HP computer, that the odds are good for your computer using 2 instead of 1 video card/graphics card. If 2, what are their names. The 2 card situation is probably the problem.
    More later.
    Thank you.

  • Mac mini (late 2014) display Flicking/goes Off and On

    Hi everyone!
Well.. i can say that, this is my first Mac computer and i already have problems. I have read a lots of comments and i have seen that many people experienced this problem with Mac mini, like display corruption, not property colors, flicking, display goes off and back on... or just standing on sleep and not turning on. (like Mac mini 2012 or 2011.. i have read about same issue..) so whats really happen?
So, from the peoples comments i tried possible solutions:
    SMC Reset
I have Reinstalled the OS X Yosemite (complete HDD format)
    I have changed the cable
    (Nothing works)
    Some detail about my connection:
    I have Mac mini (late 2014) i5 2,6GHz dual-core, 8GB ram, Iris Graphics (Intel), 1TB HDD
I have connect it via miniDP to DP > to > Dell UltraSharp U2713HM
    My following issue:
-Screen goes Off and On without reason (mostly happens when i connect my iPhone i have noticed, or maybe just impression..)
-Screen goes to Sleep without reason while i'm on computer (this normally happens after a few off and on screen flickers)
-Image corruption/distortion (after this display goes off and on, or just remaining on sleep.. like not detected
I hope someone can help me with this problem, i just bought it one week ago and i don't know what should i do, because as well i have read that even i'll change it, it can have the same problem.
    Waiting or a response,
    Best regards.

Update: I'm coming back with a possible tip for fixing this issue (I hope Apple Stuff will notice this.)
So, how i said in the previews message.. the Image corruption / and going Off and On the display happens mostly when i'm connecting the iPhone. Theory tested a few times, and take a guess.. it's true.
When i'm connecting the iPhone, the monitor goes crazy.. for some seconds, turning off and on.. and sometimes Image corruption, then coming back like nothing happened. Because i found out this, i was making more tests with the iPhone.
First, erasing the disk and reinstall the OS X again. Everything worked perfectly, until i was connecting the iPhone. I got directly Image corruption and Screen goes Off and On a several times. After this is happening, and you'll unplug the iPhone and put it again, you may not receive again Image corruption or Screen to go Off and On, but after a restart when you'll connect it again, you will receive almost everytime.
So.. after this, i was testing further. I have Paired my iPhone with iMessage and FaceTime, to see if can be a possible issue there also. True again!
Receiving messages from iPhone to Mac / Sometimes display goes Off and On
Receiving a Call via FaceTime to Mac (from your iPhone carrier) / Image corruption / Screen Off and On
After a day of test, i have realise where is the problem. "iPhone connection/Mac"
So, the cable it's good (connection miniDP to DP), by Surfing and by running other Apps i have no problem (at least until now), the only problem what cause the Image corruption and Screen Off/On for several times, it is only because of the connection with the iPhone.
I hope is someone there from Apple Stuff that will take this as notice to solve this problem. Because it is 99% software problem, and i hope it will appear soon enough an Update/Fix.
    Thank you!

  • BootCamp Windows 8.1 Display flicker early 2015 macbook pro 13

I've used the Boot Camp Assistant to install Windows 8 on my early 2015 MacBook Pro 13.  After running windows update and installing Windows 8.1 my display will flicker upon login to the windows partition.   That said I do not experience the flickering screen each time I login to the partition, it is only once in a while, and I've not been able to isolate exactly what happens that causes the screen to flicker (broadwell driver?).
Has anyone experienced this also?  Have you found a method to update the drivers or keep the display from flickering?  I've re-installed the most recent drivers using Boot Camp Assistant before and after the updates had taken place and still experienced the display issue.
Again, it is not every time I login to the windows partition only when I seem to need it most...

Please use Bootcamp Assistant. The new BC drivers are available for 2015 models.

  • Display flicker when connecting external monitor

    Hi all,
Sad to say my first post is regarding a problem I'm having with my new (re-furbished) MBP 15". It's also my first MAC in years.
Starting this past weekend, when I have my Dell 20" LCD hooked up via DVI to the MBP, the display on the MBP will start to flicker, go blurry, show colored lines, etc. Basically, it looks like any other laptop display when they start to go bad.
So, I removed the monitor, ran the HW diagnostics, and found no problems. I ran the laptop by itself all day and had no problems.
Last night I hooked it up again and the same thing happed. The connections are tight and the display on the Dell LCD is perfect. It's on the MBP that freaks out.
    Anyone have any suggestions??
    Thx.

  • Swapping Powerbook Displays

Hi all, my Powerbook 1.5 Ghz computer's logic board died, so I got a new Powerbook (1.67 Ghz). However the new Powerbook's display isn't in as good of a shape as my old one — there are a couple slightly noticeable darkish "spots" on it.
Now, I'm think of swapping displays - does anyone know if there might be a compatibility issue? My original PB is from the 1.33/1.5 family, and the newer 1.67 PB is from the 1.5/1.67 family. It's not the dual layer/faster RAM version, just the one with the speed bump, brighter display, brighter lighted keyboard, built-in airport, and BT 2.0. Btw, both are 15"
    Thanks!

What resolution is the old powerbook's display? If it's not 1440x960, the new screen won't work as far as I know.

  • 12 inch G4 Powerbook display issue

I recently took a flight and the Powerbook was fine that morning but when I got to my destination I turned on the computer to find waves in the apple on load up and the blue background had turned a pixalated blue and white. The once black background after load up is now bright lime green. and there are pixation and anti-alasising issues. It looks like the display can't do gradations and it turns black lime green. Any ideas have tried to reset PRAM many times and have gone into displays and moved the color count from millions to thousands a bunch but no luck. Any suggestions would be helpful.

Glad removing the Airport Extreme card worked. You can try wiping off the contacts with a lint free cloth, and replacing the Airport card making sure it is securely seated. Sometimes heating and cooling along with the normal handling of a laptop dislodges the card enough to cause problems. If that doesn't help you will need to get a new card.
