G4 Powerbook lid is creaky and very hard to open/close... what to do?

My wife's G4 1.67Ghz Powerbook was running great until a few days ago. The latch at the bottom isn't catching and now the lid is becoming difficult to open and close. It's very creaky and is almost pulling the screen off the aluminum casing around it. We're afraid to close and open it now for fear the screen will be damaged.
Is this a hinge thing? I'm trying to figure out if the hinges are broken or just need adjusting.
Anyone else have this problem at all?
I love this Powerbook and it's been solid since the day we got it. However, I don't want to spend a lot to fix it either (I've heard of hinges costing a lot). If I have to spend lots on it, I might as well upgrade the unit.

Nice also to see the low price (one tenth of the Titanium hinges) for the replacements. One thing that I did as a stop-gap with the TiBook was to get a WD-40 no-mess pen and daub the hinges carefully, then sop up the excess with a cotton swab.
It helped for a while but didn't solve the ultimate problem, which is that the TiBook hinges were made out of flipping Aluminum! The steel replacements from PowerbookMedic.com seemed to be a good, albeit expensive choice and were relatively easy to install.

Have made no system changes. Have Avast for antivirus,. which updates itself regularly.
Run Sys Defrag a few times a week. Don't know what else to do other than uninstall and reinstall.

You can try to disable hardware acceleration in Firefox.

I hated 4.0, so I reinstalled 3.6 and it won't open. What do I do now?

I uninstalled 4.0 and reinstalled 3.6 using there instructions from your forum...
If you still want to downgrade to Firefox 3.6.* you can uninstall Firefox 4, but do not select the option to "Remove my Firefox personal data". If you select that option it will delete your bookmarks, passwords and other user data.
You can then install Firefox 3.6.* available from http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all-older.html - it will automatically use your current bookmarks, passwords etc.
To avoid possible problems with downgrading, I recommend going to your profile folder and deleting the following files if they exist - extensions.cache, extensions.rdf, extensions.ini, extensions.sqlite and localstore.rdf. Deleting these files will force Firefox to rebuild the list of installed extensions, checking their compatibility, and reset toolbar customizations.

I expect that you have an extension that is bad probably one bad enough to be listed in

I would suggest going back to Firefox 4.0.1 and trying to fix your problems there. In either case you will need to open in Firefox Safe Mode, see [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Safe_Mode Safe Mode - MozillaZine Knowledge Base] which will disable extensions and I would expect that you would be able to run Firefox that way. If you can run okay only in Safe Mode then that almost certain means an extension problem.
If you can use menus but not use "Enter" on the location bar that proably points to
"AVG Safe Search" extension and you would have to follow directions in Problematic extensions to reinstall AVG Free without the Link Scanner Component. If you can't easily identify the extension causing problems then see

Firefox 4.0 is not a problem you thought it was, since you can customize the appearance.

hello davidrusso71, press windows-key+R on your computer and open ''%appdata%\Mozilla\'' - an explorer window should come up, in there rename the folder labelled "Firefox" to something like oldFirefox. on the next start of firefox this should lead to a new profile being created...

Try a reset and see if it resumes loading after the iPad has restarted (I assume that you are connected to a network) : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.
If that doesn't work then you could try syncing it from you computer's iTunes, or dragging and dropping it from iTunes onto the iPad device
