G4 PPC won't Sleep, Restart, or run Screen Saver

Hi all,
My 7 year old 1.25 GHz G4 PPC, until recently, has run with little to almost no problems (at least nothing I couldn't solve on my own).
Now, this past week all of a sudden I can't get the computer to go to sleep, either through Energy Saver settings or manually. It just doesn't respond and nothing happens. I read through some other similar questions that have been posted in the past and tried a few of the offered solutions. I've run disk utility, and tried disconnecting all USB peripherals, still non-responsive.
Likewise, I can't get my screen saver to run either through Energy Saver settings or through my Hot Corners (all other hot corner settings seem to work fine). It will only launch through System Prefs > Desktop & Screen Saver > Test.
The last problem I have noticed so far is that I can't perform a restart, when I do the process starts, but almost immediately goes to a grey screen with the little spinning circle (the one that looks like a clock face) and stays that way. I've let this screen run for as long as about a half hour to see if something would happen, and nothing did. In the end I have to force a power down by holding down the power button.
Again, as recommended elsewhere, I have repaired disk permissions and verified the disk, with still no change. I have disconnected all usb peripherals (3 external HD's, iPod, powered usb hub, despite the fact it's worked fine for the past 6 months with all these connections [6 months ago my firewire 400 ports stopped working, haven't replaced them yet]). I have not installed any new software recently, and my last software update before this started happening was iTunes 8.2.1 a couple of days before I first noticed the problem.
Any ideas?

Hi japamac,
Thanks for the tips. (I had to create a new account here).
Tried all your advice and nothing worked. I ended up getting fed up and tried reinstalling OSX and that didn't work either. After that I zeroed my drive (twice) and started from scratch. That's why I've been late in responding, it takes forever to backup your system when all you have to work with are usb ports at 12kb/s.
Anyway, upon completion of zeroing my HD I reinstalled OSX 10.3 and checked all my settings, no issues were apparent, I could put the computer to sleep, run my screensaver, and all hot corners worked as well, all with no apparent problems. After that I downloaded and installed all updates for OSX 10.3, and still everything worked fine. So next I reinstalled OSX 10.4 off my disk, and once again, everything worked fine. So I started with my software updates (just the basics) one at a time retesting after each one, Java updates: everything worked, iPod phone support: everything worked, DVD Player update: everything worked, then I updated the 10.4 update bundle to 10.4.11 and all the problems returned. So I started over one more time, this time updating OSX first, and still, as soon as 10.4 is updated to 10.4.11 the problems return.
So what could be happening with my computer that an operating system update (one I've had and run since it first came out, with no previous problems), is all of a sudden causing some sort of conflict or is just buggered in general, even after I have erased and zeroed my HD twice (presumably deleting any other file/program that could have been causing the conflict in the first place).
And because I erased my HD, all my login settings for this forum were gone and I couldn't remember my login info so I had to create a new account.
Thanks again,
Chris

  • IBk G4 won't sleep automatically while running on power adapter

I have suddenly developed this odd issue. My iBook sleeps fine when I shut the lid, both when running on adapter and on battery. And when I go up to the menu & tell it to sleep it will sleep (for both) as well. It just won't go to sleep on it's own while running off the adapter (I've tested it, and it does sleep on it's own when running on battery). I've repaired permissions & restarted, repairing again but this doesn't seem to help. I saw someone mention looking in the activity manager area for printer mentions but I don't think this would be the problem since it is fine off the battery? Not a big deal really, but wondering what would cause this! Thx for any ideas!

I have repaired permissions & restarted a few times, without any change.
I just looked at my activity monitor. There are many things listed ... this is not something I'm familiar with looking at! Some of the list I know right away what things are, and some I have no idea! But, if it sleeps correctly when running on battery but not AC, would it have to do what is listed on Activity Monitor? My guess is perhaps not? Maybe I need to zap the RRAM? But like the poster above me said about his, it's an old iBook and not really a big deal, I can tell it to sleep!

  • 10.4.6 won't sleep or run screen saver

After upgrading my mini to 10.4.6, it will not sleep the screen or spin down the disks, and the screen saver will not run. Other than this, everything is fine. Any advice, anyone?

I discovered that the problem with the screen saver not activating was being casued by version 2.0 of Griffin's RadioSHARK software. After updating to 2.01, released today, my screen saver now runs. However, the drives still won't go to sleep.

  • My printer officejet pro 8500A plus won't go into power or screen saver mode with XP Prof/

why doesn't my printer officejet pro 8500A plus go into power save or screen saver mode with windows XP Professional?
I have updated the firmware, i've put the printer through a power cycle, I did a semifull reset. I checked the boxes to on for power save and screensaver. Yet my printer runs through the product tour all day long

the only place I can find to enable power and screen savings is on the printer LCD itself. Is there somewhere else to look for this option? I look at printer HP on windows go to properties and there is no way to enable power saver mode.

  • Time Machine crashes every time after the computer sleeps or goes into screen saver for a period of time

Time Machine works for me about 90% of the time, until I leave the computer alone for over a hour it seems and gets into the late screen saver stage or goes to sleep. After it does this Time Machine will not work, yet the hard drive is still fully fuctional. Please Advise.

  • Run screen saver on main screen while still working on external?

Is it possible to run a screen saver on my laptop while working on my 23" LCD diaplay? Is there an app I could down load and run a screen saver inside a document window on my Mac..I use the external display and only once in a long time go back to my laptop display for email etc. Thanks.

You can do this: in the DESKTOP system preferences you can have different settings for your external and laptop display. Simply choose the "change picture" option, and designate the frequency of change. You can have the picture change as often as once every minute.

  • Ask for password after sleep but not after screen saver

Hi guys!! I have been using a mid 2009 Macbook pro since mid 2009 and obviously am thoroughly satisfied!! I have OS 10.7.4 Lion.
A small glitch that has been nagging me lately is that I have my screensaver set to on before my book goes to sleep. But I don't want it to ask for a password after it comes back from the screensaver. I want it to ask for password only when it comes back from sleep coz I don't shut the system down more than once a month, so only flip the screen shut when my day ends.
So essentially is there a way I can make it as for a password ONLY after it wakes from sleep and NOT after screensaver?

I'm not entirely in love w/ the idea of having to move all my data over to the other account. I might just deal w/ not having the screen saver ask for the pass. One other bit of info that may be helpful: This is the second time having this problem. The first time, it got fixed after the most recent intel osx update. I figured that apple had found a bug and fixed it. Then, w/o shuting down my comp, it failed to ask again. Is there any applications that could be messing this up? Any widgets that might do it?? If not, is there any apps that can switch all my pics/movies, etc over to the other account?

  • MBP won't sleep, HDD constantly running (clicking), even with no programs open

When I close the lid on my Mac at night it doesn't sleep, and I can hear the HDD quietly chattering away. Even when I'm using it during the day I can similarly hear the HDD going, even if I'm just using MS Word, Safari and Itunes - I'm a student, so my day-to-day needs don't really push my Mac that hard!
The only thing I'm worried about is if it's going to knacker the HDD if it's running 24 hours a day. Am I just being paranoid, or is it something I should chase?
It only really started happening after I bought an external HDD to use as a time capsule. I never really have it connected though, except when I back up once a week. It's a Samsung 1TB Seagate. Any Ideas?

    Try a PRAM reset:
    Shut down your Mac.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command (⌘), Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.

  • Won't sleep, restarts instead

I have a Macbook Pro bought this year in August. As of a few days ago, when I choose "sleep" from the apple menu, it restarts instead. If I close the lid, it shuts down. Any ideas?
I already tried resetting the PRAM/SMC/NVRAM.

I would go into the apple store and see if they can replace your macbook pro

  • Imac 27 runs hot as ****, won't sleep, and cpu runs wild in w7

I have been having audio issues with the imac 27. plugging headphones or speakers causes cpu to run crazy, the mic in the triband trrs jack does not work, and the imac runs hot, and will not go into power saver mode.
When I came in I found my nephew who was listening to some music on the imac, and I felt the back top of the imac and it was hot as ****. I almost burned my hand. I realized then that he had plugged his headphones in.
Unplugging the headphones or speakers can solve some of these problems.
But, this is not an acceptable fix.
Please contact Apple and urge them to fix these sound card issues.
If anyone does not have these problems in w7 with the imac 27 even after the latest bootcamp and imac updates, let us know right here. I think this affects every one of the late 2009 imacs and maybe some earlier ones too running windows 7.
Here's the post I recently ran on the headphone jack issue.
Not only does the cpu run crazy but the imac 27 gets very, very hot. Since I unplugged the headphones, it runs much, much cooler.
Certainly, some Mac engineers should take care of this problem, it seems it is universal on all the imac 27's and from what I gather, the smaller screened cousins too.
Also, we certainly want a stereo mix option for audio in or out, or what is called "what you hear" or wave out. Imac is supposed to be much geared to multimedia apps.
Finally, the mic jack part of the trrs set up MUST be fixed! A lot of manufacturers are going to headset combo jacks as they call them, mic in and stereo out on the same tribanded plug. But, the old single jack for mic in and single jack for stereo out are two tiny parts of the hardware and super inexpensive for the manufacturer. Why in the **** to go to the "advanced" triplug if the **** thing doesn't work.
Mac has a great reputation. I hope they remedy these problems right away.
Anyone whose imac 27 or 24 whose headset plug is working correctly. Let us know! I don't think anyone's is, but I think that few people understand that their cpu is running so much faster with the plug in, plus few even understand the combo jack and the triband, or trrs audio jack! Out of 4 audio technicians I talked to, not one of them knew what a trrs jack was or that you even have a mic in jack as part of the headset jack!
When I told one senior that it worked on the Mac side, he didn't believe for a while, thought my sound might be recorded from the onboard mic, but I proved it to him by tapping iaudibly on my iphone mic headset and and it showing up in garage band clearly and listening to big difference in audio.
As for a usb audio adapter, I am in a neon light environment and find that those adapters are more sensitive to electrical interference. Besides I want to use the headset jack as it was meant to be used!
    Thats it.
Again, if anyone using an imac 27 and windows 7 64 or 32 doesnt have these problems, let us know! We are all anxious for a fix!
    Best to all!

Yes, I have been dealing with this problem since early January. I just can't believe that apple would not have the necessary driver for the sound card in the Imac 27! That's like trying to run a race and not bothering to tie your shoes! How can they not have something as basic as the sound connections working???
I was encouraged to buy a top of the line imac 27 because Apple had told us that bootcamp would enable Windows users to use the machine just as if it were a native windows machine, then they don't give us the **** drivers to use the trrs mic jack. And you can't use the external speakers without the cpu going wild and heating up like a pot bellied stove.
This is really disheartening and now I am really thinking I made a big mistake. I wouldn't mind migrating to Mac gradually, but I have lot of scientific and other programs that require windows. At this rate there will be thousands of other mac buyers who will never make the same mistake again.
As you can see I am quite angry about this, and getting more angry with each day Apple ignores every imac purchaser who expected to use Windows on the machine! Is the software for a sound card driver that difficult?
Having a computer which doesn't have sound that works correctly, is like having a car without seat, you can still drive it but isn't very **** comfortable.

  • Automator won't stop restarting finder - "Run Shell Script"

This should be a tough one.... If something isn't clear, please ask.
I was trying to create a plug-in using Automator where I could turn on and off the hidden files on my system. It was supposed to show up by command clicking the desktop and it would be on the list. Somehow I messed up and it saved it somewhere. This is my first time using automator. I can tell you the steps and I need to reverse it. The link below shows what I was trying to do. Problem is that the post is old and the automator is a little different. I couldn't figure out how to save as plug-in. I saved as 2 applications where I can show all files and hide all files. It works when I click on the automator application, but I wanted to save as plug-in where I can do command click.
    http://theappleblog.com/2007/04/30/quick-tip-showhide-hidden-files/
*What I ended up doing was setting up 'folder action' an tried to save on desktop. No file appeared on desktop so it saved somewhere.... Now, every certain amount of time, my desktop relaunches and shows all hidden files. I need to delete this ongoing occurrence.
    Please help! Thanks!

Every time something is copied or saved to my desktop, the finder is relaunched and the hidden files are showing. Is there something I can reset or a setting I can delete?

  • Won't sleep

    Hello,
I have an iBook G4 running 10.4.11. Just had the HD replaced (original failed). All seems to be working fine, with one exception: the computer won't sleep according to the Energy Saver settings.
I have it set to display sleep after 3 minutes, HD sleep after 4 min. The display sleep works, but the HD sleep doesn't. I believe all was working prior to HD replacement.
The computer does sleep if I close the lid or command a sleep from the apple menu.
    Any thoughts?

Yes, I did search the boards. Most people seem to experience trouble getting the computer to sleep when the close the screen, or w/ intermittent sleep. I didn't see anyone else w/ the particular problem I'm having.
I had thought I might trash the system preferences preferences (systempreferences.plist), but I'm not sure what other carnage that will unleash...

  • My Screen Saver won't turn off on my I-Mac. Is there a way to fix this?

I have an I-Mac that every once in a while won't turn off it's screen saver when I move the mouse. I can see the mouse move and switch to the screen with the caculator, but I am unable to get the screen saver to stop and view the screen proper.
It has been updated with mavericks, but was doing this before the update. It's set to update on a weekly basis, so It should be good in that department.
so far, any suggestiosn I have been able to find haven't stopped this from happening. i'm looking for a way to exit out of the screen saver.

Have you tried going to System Preferences/Desktop & Screensaver/Screensaver, and choose "Start after Never"? That turns off the screensaver. Then, under System Preferences/Desktop & Screensaver/Desktop, choose the image you want. You can vary the sleep by playing around with System Preferences/Energy Saver, and playing around with your preferences.

  • Spinning beach ball when waking up from screen saver or sleep

A few months ago, my ancient (Quicksilver G4) Mac started giving me a spinning beach ball for a few seconds every time I wake it up from sleep or from the screen saver. It lasts anywhere from about 5 to 20 seconds. It never used to do this. The problem has continued despite a recent upgrade form 10.3.9 to 10.4.10. Repairing permissions and resetting PRAM hasn't helped. Any ideas?

Well... I tried many of those things in the search results, and nothing changed initially... i.e. after changing desktop backgrounds (which is all it seemed to take on my mini), and then changing passwords, I continued to not be prompted for my password until I restarted. Logging out might've worked as well, but I just went gung ho and went right for the restart.
