G4/QS  128 radeon 9200 mac edition & 24" monitor

Hello everyone!I just bough a 24" samsung lcd/tft display.I have the radeon 9200/128 agp card. This card is the PC version, flashed to work in the G4.When I 'm playing a tv show i downloaded and when i choose full screen the black seems to have bloches of purple and small amounts of green. But when i stand back a little it looks more black. When i play it at normal size it looks great.Do i need a bigger and better card to play it on full screen mode? Thanks,John

I think you may have been a little confused by my suggestion...I was not suggesting that you change your monitor setting to 640 x 480 +and leave it+. For example, my monitor is at 1680 x 1050 when I run all my apps and whatnot. When I watch movies, I simply open the movie I want to watch, then change the resolution of my display to the appropriate size and then enter full screen mode in the player. Trust me, the movie will look much much better. Then after I'm done, I switch back to the normal resolution.
This is why the movie looks so good at normal size-it is running at it's native resolution. You need to change your monitor's resolution to that which is the resolution of whatever video it is that you are watching if you want full quality. Yes, this means that there is an unwanted step of changing resolutions back and forth whenever you want to watch videos. But it is worth it if you want to get full quality.
One suggestion if you decided to use this method-if you go to the displays pane in system prefs, there is an option to "show displays in menu bar". If this box is checked, a little monitor icon will be placed in the menu bar to the left of the time. This menu will make it much easier to switch between resolutions you often flip between, so you don't have to constantly open the system prefs window. In the bottom of the menu, there is an option to change the number of recent items so you can have even more resolutions that you use often stored there. It makes changing resolutions much quicker. =)
Trust me this will work - I do it whenever I am watching movies.

  • Ati radeon 9200 mac edition pci on my powermac g5

hi rencently bought this card and was wondering if anyone has any experience on this card. is it faster then the stock agp card in the g5? i have tried this on my g4 qs and it actually made everything slower as it was pci. would pci-x be better? thanx all!

Hi, You had me going there for a minute.
I then looked into the specs on this card at NewEgg.
    Dude, it's a 39 dollar card, vs a 5-6 hundred card.
Seems very odd you would down grade a fine high end machine.
I just spent all night researching cards, till I finally found it.
The one I plan on is water cooled, and $800.
If it fits. I haven't verified if it's Mac attack grade.

  • Radeon 7500 Mac Edition Quicksilver 2001

I have installed a Radeon 7500 Mac Edition video card in my 2001 Quicksilver. This card was an option in the 2002 Quicksilver. I am having problems installing OSX software and notice that Mac warns that it may be necessary to install the original graphics card for installation. I no longer have my original card.
Is the 7500 compatible with my machine? In general the card works fine with my dual moniotrs but I do have problems running iChat with frequent freezes and dropped service.
If the 7500 is not a good choice for my machine what should I buy for dual monitor support and Mac compatibility?

    Hi,
    The 7500 Mac Edition is kind of an oddball. Good card, but ATI doesn't support it with Mac Drivers. You can download the latest Radeon Universal Driver ROM's from here;
    https://support.ati.com/ics/support/default.asp?deptID=894&task=knowledge&folder ID=27
Run the program and see if it helps.
If not, depending on budget, I'd get an ATI 9800 Pro Mac Edition, either the 128MB or 256MB. You will then have the best video card available for a G4, the QS will handle it just fine. I just noticed that Newegg.com has the 256MB available for $199 after rebate, a deal -for the best.
    Regards,
    Dave

  • Radeon 7000 Mac Edition

Just got my Radeon 700 64MB Mac Edition, and I am already frustrated of installing it in my B&W.
Up to last week I could play DVD's without a flaw, that's with the old ATI Rage 128, without (first) and with (after) the DVD decoder card.
I have followed the instructions for the installation to the slightest detail:
    - Downloaded latest drivers and ATI Displays from ATI, and installed them;
    - switched off my beloved B&W, and pulled the plug from the powerpoint;
    - installed the card (50 seconds, probably....);
Machine did not startup properly, but eventually I managed to start.
Now the card works, but with the following flaws:
    - DVD's are sluggish. I can manage to play them, but whenever the DVD
player controls are on the screen, the playback gets choppy. This did
not happen with the Rage 128, at all.
    - Startup: before the screen gets blue, the spinning cursor just under the
grey Apple stops spinning, which is something that never happened with
    the old card.
    - Starting from the DW CD (Jaguar 10.2.3), only starts in black and white,
meaning that hardly anything is visible on the screen.
Am I doing anything wrong? I read and heard of other users (many) with the
same type of card installed in Beige and B&W G3 machines, and working happily.
    Can anyone help?
    thanks guys

When your Mac does not start up properly after pulling the plug, you should be suspicious of a bad PRAM backup battery.

  • Installed ATI Radeon 9800 Mac Edition and know QT Pro 7.1.1 has error's

I have a G4/1.2ghz (OWC Mercury 1.2ghz Processor Card Upgrade)
I added a ATI 9800 Mac Edition a couple of weeks ago so I could contiue using Apple's iLife and now when I try to open a QT movie it sends me to
Apple's QT 3rd party updates and I don't have any idea of which or any plug in I need at this point I have updated my card with ATI's January 2005 update and
all is well except for the QT movie I'm trying to play which is in .avi format and I do know that QT Pro doesn't play some .avi movies but this one played before the installation of the ATI Video Card ?

I don't know how it is related, but I, too added a 9800 Mac Edition to a G4 Gigabit. Worked great for about 2 weeks, then it began freezing during 3D graphic games... StarWars Battlefront is way addictive.
When I finally got around to testing, I found I could no longer convert .avi to dvd through Toast 7. I had also updated to Tiger with QT 7.1
The freezing seems to be related to the power supply. While every indication was that my PSU was over 300watts. Apple now says that at that time they measured power in Amps, just because... hey why don't you buy a new mac....
I am sourcing out a replacement supply and am temporarily back on my original rage 128 card.
I wonder out loud, I have the guts of a few external hadr drive cases, that have a similar power connection. Can one of them be used to power the card.
Does the video card absolutly have to be powered by the internal power supply...?

  • Early 2009 MacPro with GTX 285 (Mac Edition) - Dual Monitor Setup

Hey Guys - I tried going through the forum to find this, and I think I see some common responses, but wanted to detail my question and make sure I have it right.
I have a MacPro (early 2009) with the EVGA GeForce GTX 285 Mac Edition GPU. I replaced the GT120 that came with the MacPro. I was initially planning on attaching two monitors to the GTX 285, but I have heard rumors that for smoother performance, I should hook up the GT120 as well and hook up one monitor to that one.
However, I am reading posts regarding other configurations (4870 and GT120, etc), and it seems like there are different responses. Basically, I am looking for better performance for graphics demanding application (gaming, photo-edit, movie, etc).
Thanks for your time and responses ahead of time.

I'm so happy that you're soooo happy. If you were so so happy, I would be disappointed. Blessed? You honor me Japamac-san. I have not bestowed blessings in years, it must have been accidental. Well, I am getting old, there's a reason people move away from me on the subway. I'm glad you interpreted it that way.
Well, ok, the cats out of the bag. I do expect 10.6.2 to do something significant for this card. For gosh sake something has to one day justify this investment...
Both EVGA and Nvidia say it's all up to Apple.
Apple says,... well Apple never says anything,.. but since they sell it on their website one would think it was in their interest to do their best. It's really not nice to sell one card as a 200 dollar option, granted 350 by itself, and another for well over 400 that is only marginally better. It's like looking for a Ford, changing your mind for the Porsche, and ending up getting a Ford with a Porsche sticker on it. This card wails in Windows, how can Apple deny that performance to it's own OS?
While OS changes are incremental one doesn't necessarily expect that all things related to the industry will be. CUDA and Open CL are emerging technologies, but the 285 is real and out there. And it has been for quite some time now. Perhaps more honest marketing campaigns are needed, something like, "Here's the best video card for the Mac out there in existence, you'll just have to wait a few years to see that for yourself, maybe".
Nah, it's not right, you buy a product for what it is, not for what it could be. If it gets better over time that's great, but right from the start it should be worth the price. The 285 hasn't been that yet.
And we 285 owners waited for Snow, with all the talk of Apple's unleashing the power of the GPU. It came and the card ran slower. 10.6.1,... well at least the OS ran better. 10.6.2, well I can't say much about it, but if one can believe what they read, it looks like Apple is at least aware of certain things to be especially worked on. The question for me is to what degree they fine tune things. Can it really be as difficult to create a driver for Nvidia cards, unlike the drivers for ATIs which seem to work with such ease? It's almost like Apple and ATI are intrinsically bound somehow. For instance, with the 285 a new game like COD4 runs just perfectly for me with a 30" monitor, but another game under Rosetta runs not too well at all. Put the 4870 in and COD4 runs very well but not as good as the 285. The Rosetta game however runs great with the ATI. It's things like that I find to be very weird.
If the history of OS X has shown us anything
The history of anything only shows me we learn nothing from it. That's my biggest fear in this case, but I'm encouraged by what I hear.
Expecting 10.6.1 or even 10.6.2, .3, or even .4 to be perfect
That's an odd thing isn't it? How long would car companies last if they fine tuned their cars by analyzing how they failed and crashed for their customers on the road? "Yo, Edsel, I think we need a way to stop them once they're going".
Yet as much as we pay for our computers and equipment we realize that the companies are using us as their R&D Depts. It's an interesting cycle, we're sold things that don't work well, give feedback to make them work well, and next time we buy the better product and it starts all over again.
Well, it's been an interesting chat, full of sound and fury, signifying... well, probably something.

  • ATI 9200 Mac Edition in D867 G4 MDD

Will this card work in a dual G4 867mhz MDD?
I am looking to replace the 32mb original card. I realize that i am removing a AGP card and adding a PCI.
I need to run dual display (I have 2 19" LCD monitors that both support analog or DVI)
I wish a regular PC compatable card would work because they are a heck of alot cheaper and could afford the 9800.

It can support two displays but one of the connectors is ADC and the adapter to convert to DVI is around $40
I think I'd rather spend $114 to get both screens going and loose the pain in the butt ADC and gain 4x better video memory.
This machine is used for HD video editing/graphics (Final cut pro HD, Photoshop, Etc.) will I see any improvment going with 128mb over 32?

  • ? to buy - ATI RADEON X800 Mac Edition

    Hello,
I'd like to buy one of these to power a 30" display on a dual G5.
Anyone heard of where they are available?
    thanks,

    Steve
I had purchased the X800 XT MAC and unfortunately recieved a defective unit (it happens) anyway got the rma and returned it to ATI/AMD they provided me with another card (1 week turnaround) it too was defective and wouldnt allow my G5 to boot even!! Yikes!! So I returned the unit to Microcenter (where I purchased the unit) and I am in the process of getting my money back (home office is issuing a check so I must wait 10 business days to get the check). So I like you must now wait to get my 30 inch to where it is really useable.
Unfortunately there are no other options really as the X800 XT MAC is available for AGP and supports the 30 inch (dual link DVI) and has a max resolution of 2048 x 1536 verses the 30 inch at 2560 x 1600 resolution as I have researched this quite exhaustively. Its apparent AGP isnt the future (obviously) and Nvidia Quadro FX at 1600 bucks is clearly outside my budget.
Perhaps someone else knows something different. Do shop around as I paid around 300 bucks for mine, however understand the wait limitations you face once you get that price and note some retailers are discontinuing availability of the unit itself for whatever reason (support may be an issue). Some places are even asking 389 bucks!!
Thanks for letting me know about the 9800 as well. Kinda regretting getting the 30 incher now!!!!

  • ATI Radeon 9200 and Mac OS X 10.5?

I just bought this card (ATI Radeon 9200 Mac Edition - 128MB), installed the available drivers (for Mac OS X 10.4, according to ati.com) and firmware update, but the graphics are horrible. In World of Warcraft, it's running at 5 FPS at lowest graphic-settings in the game. Even the Finder is having trouble.
Doesn't this card work under Mac OS X 10.5?
I tried to contact ATI, but I haven't heard from them yet. So I'd like to hear, if anyone have the same issues as me.

    Hi-
The 9200 has a core clock speed of 250mhz. Since it resides in a PCI slot, there is no multiplier, and the results are less than spectacular (as you found out). The 9200 is really meant more for adding multiple monitors, rather than adding performance.
The FX 5200(?) that came in your G5 also has a core clock speed of 250mhz, but with the 8x AGP slot, it benefits from the multiplier of the AGP, and operates much faster (though the 5200 isn't really a performance card). More on AGP.
If you are really serious about your gaming, you will need the ATI Radeon X800XT. Here are some Benchmarks. More OEM Benchmarks.
You might want to consult with OWC as to the possibility of exchange of the 9200 for an X800..... The 9600 may also be a consideration, though it is only a mid range performer.

  • Radeon 9200 screen saver crash

Trying to get a Radeon 9200 Mac edition running. When invoking screen saver or after running for it a few seconds, screen goes blank w/loss of signal box. Will also occur at random times in different apps. Need to use power button to restart. Existing AGP 128 board runs fine. OWC had me start in safe mode-seems to run fine then, although slower. Recommend an archive and install based on this. Have tried in all 3 PCI slots. a PRAM zap got it to run normally for about an hour-just as I claimed success-it blanked out. Before I commit the time to a clean install-opinions? Thanks, folks.

It doesn't do that for me. Try restarting the Apple TV by removing ALL the cables for 30 seconds, or resetting it using the reset option under general.

  • Radeon 9200 s-Video out to tv?

I've got a Blue and white Power Mac G3 with 1 gig of ram and a 600 mhz G4 processor and a radeon 9200 Mac edition graphics card. I'm try to send the desktop image as is to my tv through the s-video out. I've got the tv connected but the screen is blank. Has any one done this? How do I get the signal to got to both my monitor and my tv? Anybody know?

OK my problem was none of my equipment had an s-video in so I bought an a-b switch that had an s-video in and RCA outs and that was the problem. I took it back and exchanged it for something that converts s-video to coaxial out and that works like a charm.

  • PM 7500 with ATI radeon 7000 PCI mac edition - slow running OS 9.1

    Hello to all,
Well now have a PM 7500 with a G3 500 MHz, USB 1.1 and just installed a PCI ATI radeon 7000 mac edition video card from OWC.com. Installed the card, put in the ATI drivers that owc.com says I need and bummer, the card (32 meg of VRAM) is actually slower than my system video (doing tests with norton system info).
With this system, cannot upgrade to 9.2.1, most managed to go the "legit" way is 9.1. Any help again on this one would be appreciated.
    Thanks

  • Upgraded Sawtooth 450Mhz AGP G4 video card to Radeon 9200

Just upgraded my video card to a Radeon 9200 Mac version yesterday, from the original Rage 128 card. The 21" CRT Apple Studio Display had finally gone "toes up" after 7 years and 9 months of 12 hours use each and every single day at my studio (minus Christmas and Easter). Man I loved that monitor. I replaced it with a 23" Apple Cinema Display. It is nice, but it is BRIGHT. I feel like I need sunglasses on sitting in front of it.
Anyway, everything went smooth with the upgrade yesterday, no problems. Then this morning, when I turned on the computer I was presented with a screen that reminded me of the windows "blue screen of death". My mouse arrow was on the screen and would move around, but my desktop icons and the Mac dock never popped up. Clicking with the mouse did nothing. Finally, after waiting 10 minutes I pushed the "reboot" button under the power button on the front of the tower and the system came up with no problems.
I changed nothing other than the video card and monitor yesterday. This scares me. Any ideas what caused this?

    Hi-
    Welcome to Discussions!
It would probably be best to boot from your OS install disc, and verify/repair the hard drive.
One other possibility would be improper/corrupt third part items, such as drivers. With Panther, does ATI have any drivers necessary for the 9200? It would be worth checking the version. The retail update may be needed:
    http://ati.amd.com/support/drivers/mac/jan2005updater.html
Yet another possibility is a startup item is causing the problem. Review the following for further instruction:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106464#symp1
As for the bright display, yeah, I keep mine turned down about half way. You can adjust using the button on the right side of the display, or in System Preferences/Displays, or, if you have a Pro keyboard, F14 to dim, F15 to increase brightness.

  • Radeon 9200 upgrade to dual 867 MDD

Anyone have experience with the Radeon 9200 Mac video card? I’m looking for something that’ll run a 32” HDTV monitor at 1366x768 or 1280x720, I can’t currently do widescreen. I realize an AGP card would probably be better, but I also have an Apple monitor that I use with the machine that requires an ADC connection, and the 9600/9800 cards won’t do that; I’d need to get a $100 adapter from Apple. I just want to use the 32” to run iPhoto slideshows and look at some EyeTV videos, no gaming or fancy graphics work. Macsales said it would work, although ATI said no.
    Rob

For what it's worth, ATI's web site does not show the Radeon 9200 as discontinued as of this morning, and OWC (macsales.com) does sell the 9200 (here: http://eshop.macsales.com/item/ATI%20Technologies/100436014/).
I have a retail RME 9200 in a Beige G3 and it does not have a ADC connector. It has VGA, DVI and S-video, so would not solve your problem. You're better off trying to find an OEM card with ADC that someone pulled from a working Mac when they upgraded the card.
Also, the lack of PCI graphics card support in some OSX functions (like Quartz Extreme) mean that 2D function is rather sluggish with the 9200. It's a great card for 3D apps but not so great with 2D functions like scrolling, OSX eye candy, and photo editing.
