#3 will all of that overload the QS 733mhz psu? i just found a 733QS server for $95 i think i over paid for it but i con not find a psu for the dual 1-ghz so i bought a qs 733mhz because i did not know if it was the psu or system board i know i can put the psu in the qs 733mhz in the dual 1-ghz but i do not know if the system board blow the psu? and i do not have any more $ for computers or parts. or wood it be better off just to leave the 733mhz qs alone? i do want to run leopard and ilife '09 on it but if something goes bad i will not have any qs so i can live with just leopard or tirger if i can use LeopardAssis app does it work in a qs? but i wood like to use the dual-1ghz in the qs 733 so i can use ilife'09 and not have to use a 3-party app to install leopard.

Well i put the dual 1ghz in the 733 qs. and it blown the psu i guess the cpu is bad i just put out anouther $50+ for a new psu but when i put the 733mhz qs cpu back in i forgot to put the fan and the heat sink back on the cpu still works i puled the plug very quick. but the thermal paste is now gone on it i will get new thermal paste for it. do i just put the thermal paste ontop of the cpu top or on the heat sink? but the video card works very good from the dual 1ghz in the 733mhz qs

I have just upgraded my FCP to Studio Universal 5.1. compressor and Motion won't work with my nVIDIA (0x10de) video card. In reviewing the recommended list of replacements, I am confused as to which one to buy. i am not sure which of the list will work with my G4 and allow me to run the new version of FCP. It's too late to turn back, my original disks were traded in to Apple.

Correct SDRAM, and what is the ram ceiling in a Dual 1Ghz Quicksilver?

Thanks for helping me with my optical drive question earlier. I now would like to ask about ram. At present my G4 1GHz is running OSX Tiger on 256Mb ram. Things run ok, but they could definitely be better.
My G4 is one of the older Quicksilver models and uses SDRAM as opposed to DDR. Specifically it requires:
SDRAM, PC133 • CL=3 • Unbuffered • Non-parity • 133MHz
At first I thought I could simply transfer the larger ram sticks from my old G4 400MHz sawtooth, but the Quicksilver is very picky and doesn’t like any of them. I thought it would be backwards compatible and just slow everything down to the slowest speed memory stick (PC100 in this case), but no... it just didn’t like them full stop! (on a side note, I’ve checked and all 3 memory slots on the Quicksilver work fine, nothing defective there).
Once again working on a shoestring I would like to ram up that memory to 1Gb or 1.5Gb as I have a disc for Leopard and I would like to upgrade to that sometime soon.
So, looking on eBuyer I can see what’s described as ‘Generic’ 512MB PC133 168pin Extra Value SDRAM for £11.99 which I see as great value (here's the link). The only thing I cannot tell is if its the CL=3 variety. This means two questions:
1) Is 1.5Gb the max ram limit for a January 2002 G4 Dual 1Ghz Quicksilver, or is that simply Apple’s ram ceiling at the time? Have people put in say, 2.5Gb on these machines?
2) Is ‘generic’ ram a complete no-no for these machines? I really can’t see why not, but I’m not that knowledgeable either.

The QS didn't like PC100 because it has a 133mhz system bus. You can use PC133 in a machine with a 100mhz bus, but not conversely.
The max RAM is still three 512MB modules for a total of 1.5GB. That model isn;t one that can exceed the original specs.

Unless identified as suitable for Mac, most of the generic stuff turns out to be for PC. The site you linked does not provide enough support info, and Googling the "manufacturer's part number" doesn't lead to a manufacturer site, just a bunch of circular references back to the seller's site. Suspicious
You should probably call the seller and ask for someone who knows Mac RAM. In addition to being unbuffered and non-parity, it needs to be low-density.
With such a paucity of key Mac metrics, that listing makes be very nervous. I know RAm is expensive in teh UK based on a lot of psots all over Apple Discussions, but you have to find someone who knows Mac RAM.
There is a great free tool for checking whether any Mac can handle more RAM than the original specs showed. It's the MacTracker database and is here:

I couldn't work these forums without it. It shows all the facts and specs of the machine, and always indicates if the original RAM specs can be exceed. For example, for the USB 2.0 eMacs, its Memory entry is:

Quicksilver dual 1GHz 2002 powers off for no reason.

My Quicksilver dual 1GHz 2002 powers off for no reason. Could it be because of overheating? I can run it for an hour or 2 and then it simply powers off as if the electricity went off. No warning, no process. I can wait 30 min and power it up for maybe 10 min and the same thing. Does anyone know what may be causing this? There are some logic bd problems too. It will not shut down. I must hold the power button down until it goes off, and to start it up, I must unplug it f power then replug it into the wall to start it up. Yes it is time for a new one, but this one would be nice as a 2nd Mac.

Hello! Look in apps>utilities>console and see if it's throwing a crash log that might narrow down the problem. It could be a weak power supply that's failing when it gets warmed up or a fan that has quit. Tom

Quicksilver G4 Dual 1ghz power supply...

I'm pretty sure that the power supply in my Quicksilver G4 Dual 1ghz is going. Initially, I was only getting the familiar bong for startup, but nothing else. I then noted that the fan on the GForce Ti card wasn't spinning, nor the fan on the optical drive. I removed the Ti card, my second hard drive, and two RAM chips; the computer started, then shut down. I pushed the power button, it finally started. The fan on the optical drive is still not spinning (still plugged in though.)
I did buy a new motherboard battery, put it in, and followed the process of resetting the CUDA/PMU. I did that before doing the above so I know the battery is fine.
That's why I'm almost sure it's the power supply.
So, my question is, where and how do I go about purchasing a new power supply for this computer? Any help and/or suggestions would be most appreciated.

If you are extermly confident with a multi meter you might try the following procedure. However, be sure to use appropriate ESD procedures as "static" can kill your machine and be sure to take care as electircal power can kill you.
PS verfication:
1. Power Mac G4 (QuickSilver/QuickSilver 2002) (see Figure 3): Connect the black lead of the volt meter to pin 11 of the 22pin power supply connector. Connect the red lead of the volt meter to pin 22 of the power supply connector. The volt meter should measure approximately +25V. If you do not get a reading of +25V, re-check the volt meter connections and measure the voltage again. If voltage is still not present, replace the power supply; otherwise, go to the next step. If you do measure +25V on pin 22, the power supply is likely OK. Go to the next step for further verification.
Start up the computer by pressing the power button on the front of the computer. Note: Verify that the power cable is plugged into connector J30. If the computer starts up normally, the power supply is OK. If the computer does not start up, go to the next step.
2. Check to see if the power supply fan is spinning. If it is not, go to the next step.
3. Connect the black lead of the volt meter to pin 16 of the power supply connector for AGP and PCI models or pin 11 for Gigabit Ethernet/Digital Audio/QuickSilver/QuickSilver 2002 models. Connect the red lead of the volt meter to pin 1 of the power supply connector. The volt meter should measure approximately +3.3V.
If you do not get a reading of +3.3V, re-check the volt meter connections and measure the voltage again. If voltage is still not present, replace the power supply; otherwise, go to the next step.
4. Connect the black lead of the volt meter to pin 16 of the power supply connector for AGP and PCI models or pin 11 for Gigabit Ethernet/DIgital Audio/QuickSilver/QuickSilver 2002 models. Connect the red lead of the volt meter to pin 4 of the power supply connector. The volt meter should measure approximately +5V. If you do not get a reading of +5V, re-check the volt meter connections and measure the voltage again. If voltage is still not present, replace the power supply; otherwise, go to the next step.
5. Measure the voltage of pin 10 on the power supply connector. The voltage should measure approximately +12V. If you do not get a reading of +12V, re-check the volt meter connections and measure the voltage again. If voltage is still not present, replace the power supply; otherwise, go to the next step.
6.The testing is complete. You have just verified that the power supply is not the cause of the “No apparent power” symptom.

Dual 867mhz MDD G4 & Dual 1Ghz G4 Quicksilver: Near Perfect Installation

I installed the family pack on both my desktop G4 towers (Dual 867mhz MDD G4 & Dual 1Ghz G4 Quicksilver) and had almost ZERO problems.
I opted to upgrade my OS X 10.4.10 systems.
Both installations (upgrades) were without a problem, except for one minor keychain glitch:
MDD Dual 867mhz G4: After installation and restart, the keychain seemed to have forgotten my passwords for my POP email and my iChat (AIM) accounts. I simply cleared the keychain (as prompted) and re-entered the passwords (opted to save them) and all is well.
Quicksilver Dual 1ghz G4: No keychain issue. Passwords were retained just fine.
Every piece of email, settings, music, files, folders, apps, etc were all retained just fine on both computers.
All my Adobe CS2 suite apps, MS Apps are just fine.....as does my Final Cut Pro software.
The only software that "broke" was GOOGLE EARTH. I simply just downloaded the latest version and all is well again.
Approx. Install time: 1hr.
Note: If your computer stalls on a blue screen (my computers did this on TIGER install), let them go. More than likely it's "finishing" the installation and probably cataloging the hard drive for Spotlight.
This Leopard OS Rocks! I can't wait til they fine tune it with a 10.5.1 update release

I put Leopard on a Dual 800 and a Dual 400.
Leopard pushes the limits of the 400. The 800 runs pretty well.
I mean it is slower in some places, but I assume that will be fixed in updates.
(for instance... my cursor is sticking to links in firefox and it kills my CPU usage)
Everything else works great.

Occasional Freezes on QS Dual 1ghz

Hi,
I recently acquired a dual 1ghz quicksilver that has had its RAM upgraded to 1.5 gig from the original 512. It has also had an extra USB/Firewire card installed in it. Every now and then it freezes up. A restart fixes it, but it is kinda annoying. I'm thinking that this might be a RAM issue but thought that i'd come here and ask what everybody else thought.

Logic on a dual 1ghz processor machine.

I have a quicksilver dual 1ghz processor machine with 1.5gig ram. The minimum requirement for Logic is a single 1.25ghz processor. It would "seem" like a dual 1ghz processor board would trumph a single 1.25ghz processor. I went to the local Apple store and asked several "genious" and software reps if I could run logic on my machine and the best I could get was "ummmmmm, good question...."
Does anyone know if I can run it? Apple doesn't - and if you buy the software and it doesn't work, you can't return it.

I was using a G4 MDD 1 ghz dual when I first upgraded to LP8. it did work but it was much slower and problematic than LP7. I found a good deal on a G5 on ebay and I am very glad I went that way. You will get a warning message when you instal Logic Studio, but it will work

Dual 1ghz processor G4 with FCP 6

Hi. I've seen this question around, but not specifically for my machine, so here goes:
I have a Mirrored-door dual 1Ghz processor G4 currently running FCP 5.whatever the last update number was. I'm now back in school and the school has Studio 2 (FCP 6). I'm happy with the system I have, but I can't take files back and forth from home to school, so I'm thinking about getting Studio 2 at home. I know right off the bat that I'll need a new video card, but I noticed that the minimum requirements are for a 1.25ghz G4. Will a dual processor 1ghz work? I'm not concerned with being able to use motion or color at home, just FCP and Soundtrack Pro.
I know that the real answer is buy a new computer, but that's not really an option right now.

I want to upgrade my Power Mac G4 533MHz processor to a better one. I see plenty of them for sale on e-bay but I am not sure which are compatible. I have seen (Apple Power Mac G4 MDD 1.25GHz DP processor) and (Apple Power Mac G4 Quicksilver 733MHz CPU Processor) and (Apple Power Mac G4 1.42ghz Processor Module CPU 1.42ghz). I dont know if the MDD is compatible or the quicksilver. I have googled this topic many times but have seen conflicting answers.

In the link japamac posted, scroll down to the heading, "12 Volt Power Connector for 4th Mount Point". If you click on any of the small pictures, they will be shown much larger. This picture shows how the author used a nut and short bolt to fix a "loop" or "spade" connector on a wire to supply the required 12 Volts to the fourth lug on these faster processors. No soldering needed, and can be undone in a jiffy.
There is one more issue you may face if your old processor has the cooling fan powered off two pins on the processor module. The new processor will not have those pins, and you will need a 12 Volt fan adaptor (also off a Hard Drive power connector, or even the same power connector) to run the cooling fan.
Some of these adapters have Red, Black, and Yellow wires (instead of the expected Red and Black only). The yellow wire is an RPM output from the fan, and can be safely ignored.

Starts up with bong and then a long wait then screen comes on with old time smiley Mac and spinning beach ball then another long wait and then OS X loading bar and then a panic screen. Subsequent start, bong, and then hard drive spins for 6 or 7 minutes, then hard drive stops and then nothing. Could this be symptomatic of a hard drive failure?

I am pleased to report that I think the problem has been solved. Apparently the strange behavior can be attributed to overheating. After some on line research and the help of people on this list I opened the case and found that the logic board fan was clogged full of lint and dust. After cleaning it I discovered that the fan is inoperable. The computer is now operating with the case open and a small electric fan directed at the logic board heat sink. The computer has been operating flawlessly now for several hours. Will have to replace the bad cooling fan and clean the computer regularly. Thanks so much to all of the people who have responded to my request for help. Would like to mention that a firm with a canine connection charged me over a hundred dollars to report that their diagnosis is a faulty logic board.

Where is microphone jack on my Quicksilver (733MHZ)?

I "upgraded" my old Graphite machine to this one , added memory(1GB) and a 2nd drive (60GB ) for a total of 140GB. This was at very little cost since my re-seller had one he practically gave it to me. This move is to hold me until the iMac Intel desktop has its own Virtual PC mechanism.
I tried to find a microphone input but the mike I have will not 'fit' in the indicated plug. That plug has the "Sound" icon beside it; the other has the "earphone" icon (I assume for headphones).
What type of mike do I need to connect to this machine? My current mike fit fine in my old Graphite machine....
All ideas/comments are welcome

Apple Pro Speaker Jack: sound icon
Analog Audio Out/Headphone Jack: earphone icon

G4 Dual 1GHz MDD slows to creep then freezes

I have an employee running MacOS X 10.4.7 on a G4 Dual 1GHz MDD with 2GB RAM. This employee is having problems with the system slowing to an absolute crawl, where there are delays even in mouse movement. The system then finally locks up, and the only way to restart it is manually. Over the past couple of weeks, I have done a clean install, replaced the hard drive (because the original one completely died), and replaced all of the RAM. I have run disk and permission repairs multiple times, and have wiped out the cache multiple times.
The only thing I see left to replace is the video card. Could this be the culprit, or do I need to look at replacing the system with a new Mac?

The only background applications that have been installed are Retrospect Backup Client, and FontAgent Pro, both of which are installed on every other Mac at the office.
I have not run memtest or any other memory tester, however, the fact that I can take a complete set of RAM out of an identical machine that is stable, put it in this one, and have it still crashing should cancel RAM out as the cause of the problem.
I replaced the hard drive with a 250GB Western Digital. It is the only hard drive, so their should not be any IO conflicts between it and other drives. I have used FSCK, Disk Utility, and Drive Genius to check the drive and they all say it is good.
There are no 3rd party PCI cards installed in this system.
This Mac is configured just like all the other identical ones in the office. In fact, due to just having a clean install performed, it is even cleaner than the others.
I have reset the PRAM and NVRAM. Sometimes after resetting these, the system locks up before the gray apple even appears, requiring me to run FSCK. I have not reset the PMU yet.
Is it possible it is a bad video card? I know an inexpensive card can be obtained for testing, but my main concern is the time it will take to get it in. I don't want to waste that time if it is obvious the video card is not the answer.

PMG4 dual 1ghz wont start up

I'm working on a MDD dual 1ghz. It wasn't starting up...the power light would come on for a second then turn off, then the fans would start spinning. after a couple of seconds it went into wind tunnel mode.
we ordered a replacement power supply, which i put in today. and it still wont start up. same problem. I checked the voltage on pin 24 (with the computer off as it says in the troubleshooting guide) and it was 0 volts, not 12.
I suppose it's possible the new power supply was DOA, but does anyone know if the logic board might either be the reason its not booting, or if the logic board could kill the power supply somehow?
Mac OS X (10.4)

I have the same situation with a single 1Ghz MDD. No chime, power to all fans and HD is ok, but front light only stays on for a couple of seconds and after about 10 seconds, cooling fan shifts into high gear. No video either. I also tried another power supply, but the same thing happens. I guess the question is: 1. Is it possible that both power supplies are bad? 2. Is the motherboard bad? or 3. is the processor bad. Since I don't have another MDD handy, I can't play 'switch the parts" to test each. What else can I do? Can I use the known good power supply from an earlier G4 to test? or are the contacts wrong?
