G4 Quicksilver failing to startup after chime

My usually stable 10 year old G4 hard drive (attached to VGA monitor) is having serious problems with it's starting up process, so I am presently nursing it along (without shutting down at the end of the day) by using sleep mode. If I shut it down, chances are it fails to power up again. When I press the power on button to startup, I hear the chime and the startup process as usual, then everything stops within seconds, before the monitor screen is due to come on. The two external devices attached are the keyboard with mouse, plus a USB hub. No recent upgrades or changes. Everything is backed up on an external firewire disk. Since this trouble started a few days ago I have replaced the lithum battery and managed to successfully start it up only once (after a number of attempts) so I can nurse it along. I have tried all the usual troublshooting - when I restart in either safe, verbose, or reboot off OSX CD, single user mode, extensions off, or try to reset the PRAM fails to chime twice - in every instance it won't get past the chime. Checking the system profiler 'power on self test' indicates 'failed', failure type is 'external cache'.  As I can't reboot off the OSX10 or systemworks CD I can't run Diskwarrior on the operating system or reinstall the operating system. So, I am now at the limit of my capabilities.
Can anyone tell me what the problem is?
Frances

The "external cache" would be referring to the L3 cache chips on the processor board.
That error does not bode well for future longevity.
It isn't that uncommon for the L3 to fail on that processor, most likely due to the hot-blooded nature of the dual 1 GHz machine.
It is likely time to search for a used processor daughter card (eBay).
It may also be possible to disable the cache using CHUD from the Developer tools in OS X.
Depending on the exact type of failure, this may (or may not) return some reliability in the boot process.

  • No video or startup after chime - could it be...

a few days ago, while away from home, my pb would only chime and then not startup. you can hear a small chirp of disk activity, but then only the fan. the only way out was to hold the power button and power down. i tried everything, zapping the pram, swapping batteries, hooking up an external monitor, reseating the ram, and resetting the pmu. finally i called apple and he agreed that it must be the video card or the logic board, and set-up a order to send me the shipping box. as we were finishing up, the pb, upside down, battery removed and lid closed - came on. ? i flipped it over, and opened it up and it was starting up normally. after doing some backups, i shut it down, and tried to restart. same black screen, no activity. after 4-5 power downs, and restarts, some including pram zapping (sometimes it won't reset the pram - or at least not re-chime) it would eventually startup. after startup everything is fine, no problems, no crashes. i even cloned the entire drive without a hitch. monday when i was home again, it took about 3 or 4 attempts to start again. after it was up for about 10-15 min. a networking dialog came up - searching for MDD_X (my desktop g4) with only a cancel button - i hit cancel. strange thing is i never tried to connect to the desktop, and don't have anything setup to auto connect to it. a few minutes later the same thing, this time i waited instead of canceling, and it evetually gave up with a dialog to the effect of - the connection doesn't exist or isn't available. after that, the pb starts up normally so far.
on a similar topic - i realized a long time ago that a shutdown problem was actually a network issue. if i'm sharing a disk in my MDD G4 and have it mounted on the pb, if i don't eject it on my pb before shutting down the MDD G4 when i try to shut down the pb it results in a apparent hang right before shutting down. it just stays on the blue screen (or maybe gray) but no indication that it's looking for a connection. i have to restart the MDD G4, and as soon as it comes up, the pb shuts down. it used to be more foolproof, all the way back to os7, that when you shut down a machine that was sharing a disk, it would ask you how long do you want to give them to disconnect, or just disconnect, and the client side would get a dialog saying you've got so many seconds, or that you've been disconnected. osx seems to be dumb in that regard. is there a preference i'm missing?
and more importantly - is it normal or possible that a network connection search could halt the startup even before the video starts up? or should i be worried that my logic board has a problem still. i don't want to wait until my applecare runs out.
    thanks

    Thanks Tom,
Yes, I can find the clip just fine using the reveal in finder function. It pops up and I played it back in Quicktime. No problems there.
Here's a screenshot of what I have. The parts that are selected do not have any video or audio after export. The ones that are not selected play fine after export. I don't understand what could be the issue since they are from the same source clip.

  • G5 Kernel Trap panic at startup after chime - Help!

I have a Power Mac G5 2.0MHz Dual Core. The only externals are Mac keyboard, Mac mouse. No third party drivers installed since the HD is blank.
I can't even start up past the chime. After the chime, the screen gives me
    unresolved kernel trap(cpu 0): 0x300
Kernel loadable modules in backtrace (with dependencies):
         com.apple.driver.AppleMacRISC4PE(1.6.0d9)@0x322c3000

              dependency: com.apple.driver.IOPlatformFunction(1.7.0b1)@0x322b3000
I received this G5 a year ago. It was a working system, but the HD was pulled before I got it. I tried startup with Shift down. I tried startup with C-key down with bootable 10.4 CD.
I have put in a new Mac formated HD (no system installed yet) and reseated the RAM, but no luck. I cleaned the computer slots and reseated the monitor card.  I installed new RAM, zapping PRAM, cuda button, still no luck. I also tried putting RAM in 2nd slots in case the 1st slots were bad.
Upon startup holding Shift key I get this on screen:
panic(cpu 0 caller 0x002DE020): Unable to find driver for this platform: "PowerMac11,2"
Does this mean a processor or logic board is bad? What are my options? If it is chiming at startup, would the hair dryer trick even be worth trying?
    Help!

I don't have the disc here. Do you suppose 10.4.0 will not run on it if 10.4.2 will?
    Absolutely, & 10.4.2 is a gray Machine specific Disc, Retail 10.4 Discs were 10.4.0, 10.4.3, & 10.4.6 as I recall.
10.5 Retail Disc should work also for any G5.

  • Macbook Pro fails on startup after drive format and OSX reinstall

    Hi all,
I have a 2012 15'' Retina Macbook Pro - pretty new, so it surprises me I'm having this issue.
The problem was pretty sudden - one day upon startup, I would be immediately told that Finder has closed unexpectedly. From this point on, little functionality remained. Sometimes I could launch a program, rarely would it respond to any input. Launchpad was molasses - I watched my individual apps drawn on the screen one at a time each time it launched. Pressing restart on my keyboard brought up the restart menu but making a selection closed the menu without restart. The only way to shut it off is to hold the power button and do a hard restart.
I've now formatted the entire partition from my recovery partition on startup and done a fresh install of OSX (Mountain Lion I believe). Even without restoring my data from a backup I encounter the same issues.
This screams hardware to me, but for the baffling fact that my Windows partition is running just fine - I'm using it right now. I'm not sure where to turn - if it is hardware, is there a way to contact Apple without paying them money? Certainly a defect of this nature warrants replacement from Apple if there's no other solution, correct? I appreciate any advice and expertise.
    All the best,
    Hertafeld

Actually just to note - one of the people I did manage to find on a forum having the same issue was running OS X as a virtual machine, which would suggest that it’s a software fault - is it possible my Install DVD could have become corrupted somehow or an update in the past year has made some incompatibility between it and my computer’s hardware? If so is there a way of downloading a Snow Leopard ISO image from Apple to try burning and installing from that?
I found this topic: https://discussions.apple.com/message/12459943#12459943 where someone manages to get around the issue by using a different install disc, though I obviously only have the one that came with my Macbook…… halp!

  • Powerbook fails to startup after Safari, Java, QT Updates

I have a 15" Powerbook G4 with OS X.4.2 and just ran software update, while connected to the power supply - it is not running on battery power. After installing the QuickTime, Java, and Safari updates (it has been away from a network for a while) I got the click Restart screen. After clicking Restart the computer shutdown. I hit the power button, heard the hard drive spin up for a few seconds, then a little squeak, silence, then nothing. I tried to power up with option-command-p-r thinking maybe I could reset the PRAM. Same result. I powered on and inserted my OS X.4 DVD (mistake here) and held down the C key. No change, but now the DVD is stuck in the Superdrive. I then tried the ctrl-command-power button until I heard the long tone, released the keys, then nothing. I've also tried removing and swapping the RAM. I should also mention that I get no power light on the front of the powerbook. If I hold down the power button for five seconds I get the long tone and rapidly flashing power light, then the HD stops and silence. I'm guessing the machine is dead. Everything I have read in my Apple Service Technician course manuals says that this is a sign of logic board failure. (At least I have AppleCare).
Anyone have any ideas? I also installed the updates on a G5 and now it has been freezing up at various points and the only way to fix is hold the power-button for 5 seconds and then force a shutdown and restart.
Any help is appreciated, as I found nothing like this on the Apple discussions or tech info. All those issues report at least making it to a gray screen, mine stays black the whole time.

hello, I'm having the same problem w/ my PB, i did an update too isight, which i dont use, but just to keep the automatic update in silence! lol, well I'm waiting for some help too, but if u have a CD stock inside try this, press F12 (eject) right after pressing the power button, i hope this give u a little help

  • Mac mini fails to startup after 10.5.8 upgrade

    Hey All,
I just finished downloading the new update and my Mac Mini wont start up. It just stays on the white screen with the apple and it blinks the prohibit sign. I read everything I could on trying to get this baby back up and here's what I have tried.
I started up from the disc and under disc utility I repaired permissions & repaired disc-after repairing, both showed that there was nothing to repair.
I tried reseting PRAM by holding down command, option, p & r. Nothing
Is there something else I'm not trying. Do I have to reinstall....the sound of that makes me shutter. I'm one of those jack ***** who hasn't backed up my hard drive.
Thanks for your time in this frustration.

but...I was able to archive and install.
    Great!
I'm gonna have to wait and figure out why 10.5.8 did this and maybe attempt another update later.
More then likely, there was some corruption in your hard drives directory that you didn't know about or Disk Utility could not repair. Then when you applied the update it got magnified. This happens often if users don't +Repair Disk+ before installing an update.
    Then follow this procedure;
Download the Combo update from this site (yours may also have been corrupt), not +Software Update+, disconnect all firewire + USB devices except keyboard + mouse,Repair Permissions, re-install update, Repair Permissions again + try.
Sometimes downloads from +Software Update+ have issues so I always download the Combo Update.DALE

  • Firefox fails to startup, with no error message whatsoever, after installing the Fireftp add-on.

Firefox fails to startup on OS X 10.6.4, after I install the FireFTP plugin. There's no crash message or anything, just a bouncing icon on the dock and then nothing happens. Creating a new profile solves the issue until i install FireFTP, which again produces the same effect.

    Hi Anselmo_MSW!
It looks as though you have followed the correct steps and no, you do not need to lift up both levers at the same time.
The error code 5100 indicates that an internal error has occurred which may be resolved by resetting the printer.  Please follow these steps for isolating and resetting the printer:
    1.  Open the printer's front cover, and then open and close the print head lock lever (do not remove the print head).
    2.  Make sure all ink tanks are seated properly.
    3.  Make sure all packing materials have been removed.
    4.  Make sure no paper is jammed in the printer.
    5.  Disconnect the printer cable from the printer.
    6.  Close the front cover and turn the printer off.
    7.  Unplug the printer from the power source, and then plug it back in after five minutes.
    8.  Power on the printer.
If the error returns, the printer will require service options.  I realize you have just purchased this and wanted to let you know that this is not the normal operation of our printers.  What I would recommend is contacting a Canon Representative using the following link to learn of your service options.  Contact Us.

  • I have a slow startup or login, with numerious spinning wheels. Sometimes after a long ti,e I can sign into the computer and sometimes it just fails to startup or login. I have a MacBookPro OS X 10.7.5 from 2011

I have a slow startup or login, with numerious spinning wheels. Sometimes after a long ti,e I can sign into the computer and sometimes it just fails to startup or login. I have a MacBookPro OS X 10.7.5 from 2011. It became more serious recently as I think I might have let my battery run out I also tried to download the operating system to reinstall it but it allways stops around 1.4 GB out of 1.7 then the whell starts again.

Keep the MBP attached to the power adapter.
First try SMC and PRAM resets:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3964
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1379
Then try to boot the MBP in recovery (OPTION key down) and select the recover partition.  Select Disk Utility>First Aid and verify and repair the HDD.
Additional steps can be found here:

    Ciao.

  • How can i get mountain lion reinstalled if my mac says apple id never purchased? hd failed 2 wks after wty expired, I am the original owner, i have done command-r

how can i get mountain lion reinstalled if my mac says apple id never purchased? hd failed 2 wks after wty expired, I am the original owner, put another hd in, done command-r & sys reinstalled, but it wanted to update & now am stuck. I don't mind paying for mountain lion; it is too far to get to an apple store. but, i only have one mac, so i cannot download with another mac. lots of other apple, but only one mac.

You will need to do a network recovery:
    Install Lion/Mountain Lion on a New HDD/SDD
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
Boot to the Internet Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND-OPTION- R keys until a globe appears on the screen. Wait patiently - 15-20 minutes - until the Recovery main menu appears.
Partition and Format the hard drive:
    1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
    2. After DU loads select your external hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Install button. Be sure to select the correct drive to use if you have more than one.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • One Daemon fails on startup, but I don't know which one

    Hi!
During startup I see the message, that one of the daemons fails on startup, but my eyes are too slow to see which one it is
I don't have any troubles and everything works fine but I want to know what's going wrong on startup. I know there are log files in /var/log but I can't find the information I looking for.
These daemons I have in my rc.conf:
syslog-ng network netfs crond cups hal !fam alsa acpid slim mpd
So, not that much, but I don't get it (I don't know about the fam-daemon, I think I don't need it, do I?)
    Thanks
    Barghest

Thanks for your suggestion, but that didn't work.
But I just used sudo reboot after login and had a chance to see that it is the acpid daemon that fails.
I'm a bit confused, because it works fine (I can shutdown by pressing the power button) and in /var/log/acpid.log I can't find an error message.
So, is it a good idea to start it in the background?

IIRC, Internet Connect is a Tiger and earlier app which is now rolled into Network for Leopard and Snow Leopard. I can't help with the DSL issues since I dropped that over four years ago and have been on cable ever since.

  • Palm Desktop Fails at startup wiht AppName: palm.exe AppVer: 4.1.4.0 ModName: mfc.dll

Folks, Wifes phone appears to have something wrong with the address book. When she syncs to the palm desk top we get the following error at palm desktop startup : Palm Desktop Fails at startup wiht AppName: palm.exe AppVer: 4.1.4.0 ModName: mfc.dll .
If i remove the address folder the desktop works until we sync again. Help!

There may be database corruption causing the issue. Click on the following link for the program called DbFixiT. This program has a trial version that you can download and install on your Palm OS device. The trial version will scan for database corruption and then report the corruption. You can then find the records causing the problem and fix them yourself or you can purchase the program and have it automatically fix the records.

Remove the address folder like you did so you can start up palm desktop. Sync DBfixit to the phone using quick install. Scan for db corruption on the device and Blobs in the calendar. After that is done, sync the Treo to the PC with the conduits set at handheld overwrites desktop. This will create a new "clean" address book on the PC and this should allow Palm desktop to open correctly.
For reference purposes, click on the following link for the support page for your device on the kb.palm.com webpage.

  • No startup tone/chime

I just noticed tonight that neither my Macbook pro and Imac desktop. the startup tone/chime are not working?
I am concerned this might be a problem.  Both are new this last year and are running 10.6.8.  I have removed all cables and restarted the iMac, still no sounds.  The volume is all the way up on both. I played iTunes on both to make sure I could hear something, working fine?
    Thoughts
    Thanks

Just wanted to let everyone know that the resets did not work for me. Probably something to do with the NVRAM reset instructions saying to hold the key combo down after you hear the startup sound. Uh, there is no start up sound.
The fix for me was very simple. Go into system preferences and unmute the speaker. Volume settings are saved in NVRAM (aka BIOS) and not in the OS. At least that is how I've rationalized it in my mind to make sense. Unfortunately the only way to interact with it is via system preferences.
