G4 QuickSilver multi-drive working 10.4 & 9.2.2 - upgrade to 10.5 ?

I've spent a week looking for this answer, so please be patient with me. I've had MAC's since my first Quadra around '87. Can't give up Claris CAD (and I have XTND CGT with DXF translation - yeah !). Even my HP 5500 HDN and plotter work fine.
I have a Quicksilver dual 800 system with four drives - two ATA, and TWO SCSI. Of course the SCSI have all the "old" Claris files on them.
Is there ANY way to upgrade to Leopard so I can work on iPhone app development and keep booting to OS 9.2.2 BTW - it works great right now. I don't care if I have to boot between the two - lament because Classic environment has been so easy to use - but I need 10.5 and just can't have yet another system on my desk.
Do I just boot into 9.2.2 and copy the system to one of the SCSI drives, then "bless" it in Startup. How do I keep what is otherwise a fully functioning 9.2.2 system as a separate disk ? Or can it keep existing on the same drive as 10.5 and just need to boot between them ?
BTW - have the 10.5 disks for over a year now - and been screwing with this for that long - but now I'm at a point where can no longer put it off.

Hi, Mitchell -
Welcome to Apple's Discussions.
Question - do you want to also keep OSX 10.4 after you install 10.5? Or is your goal to have only 10.5 plus the ability to boot to OS 9?
If you do not retain OSX 10.4 -
As you seem to be aware, OSX 10.5 does not support Classic. Therefore, there is no point in keeping OS 9 on the same volume as OSX.
You can relocate OS 9 to a different drive, either the other internal ATA drive or one of the SCSI drives, via a drag-and-drop (Finder copy) process. If it were me, I'd pick the other inernal drive for OS 9 - although SCSI speeds are generally excellent, they can be a bit more tempermental than ATA drives.
The result may not even need blessing - if the copied System Folder displays the Mac OS glyph on it, it is blessed. Copy also the Applications (Mac OS 9) folder, the Documents folder that OS 9 created, and all the rest of your OS 9 stuff (don't overlook things lying on the desktop).
About the only tweaking needed would be to 'fix' any aliases in use - copies of those will continue to point to originals on the source drive. These aliases can include one for Shelock in the Apple Menu Items folder in System Folder; perhaps a few in the Application Support folder in System Folder; plus any you have made for your own needs.
Test boot to that copied OS 9 before removing the original from the source drive.
Provided that is satisfactory, you can remove OS 9 from the source drive, then update that drive from OSX 10.4 to 10.5.
Note 1 - as an alternate you could relocate OSX and its programs to a different drive, but this is more difficult in that it involves using a cloning utility, and removing all of its stuff from what would then be the OS 9 drive can be difficult. It's easier to move OS 9.
Note 2 - in this scenario (OSX 10.4 replaced), since OS 9 could no longer be used as Classic, you can remove certain files from the OS 9 System Folder that are used only when it is run as Classic. These files are - Classic, Classic Support, and Classic Support UI (all usually located loose in the System Folder); Classic RAVE (in Extensions folder); and ProxyApp (someplace - location seems to vary). The result would be an OS 9 System Folder suitable for booting, but not for use as Classic.
If you do retain OSX 10.4 -
I would suggest installing OSX 10.5 on its own drive and leave the original OSX 10.4 + OS 9 drive as-is. This may necessitate re-installing some software on the 10.5 drive, since OSX seems to be a bit more fussy (than OS 9) about having its programs on the same volume as the OS.

  • Using a multi-drive SATA enclosure on a Mac with just Firewire?

I currently have four external hard drive enclosures, loaded up with 14 500GB drives. The current 1TB+ drives only seem to come as SATA drives, so I need to migrate to SATA enclosures that hook up via Firewire.
The problem is, such cases don't seem to exist at comparable prices. I was able to get four-drive IDE to Firewire enclosures for under $200, and they are much much more to get similar SATA drive enclosures.
USB is an option, and cheaper, but USB takes more CPU time and is slower than Firewire, and that's a showstopper for video work. THe data copy I did last night via Firewire took 9 hours... I can't imagine stepping back to USB 2.0 (and yes, it's an old debate, but benchmarks show USB 2.0 is slower even if is supposedly faster on paper).
I have searched all over for Firewire to SATA adapters, and so far have found only two types:
    FirmTek SeriTek/SpyderHUB - $120
    http://www.firmtek.com/seritek/seritek-spyder/
Input USB or Firewire, and outputs two SATA ports. But, it does not support "Port Multiplier" cases, so you really can only hook up two seperate SATA drives to it. No good.
The other is from COOL DRIVES, with a $30 model and a $60 model:
    http://www.cooldrives.com/sata-to-firewire-usb-mini-converter.html
The $30 model (above) is a USB or Firewire to SATA, period. The $60 model adds a Firewire pass through:
    http://cooldrives.stores.yahoo.net/satofimiad2x.html
The $60 model claims to support up to 1000GB (1TB) drives, and the $30 says only 500GB, so neither is good if I plan to move to 1.5TB drives.
So my goal is to be able to buy a multi-SATA drive enclosure, and plug it up to Firewire. The problem is price. A 4-bay SATA-Firewire enclosure is much, much more than the same model that is USB/SATA. For instance:
    2-drive SATA to Firewire/USB - $161
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16816215067
    2-drive SATA to USB - $119
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16816215056
So $30 more lets me buy a four drive firewire/IDE enclosure. SATA/IDE converters for each drive (to use my existing case) can be $16 each, so that's not really an option with 14 drives either.
So my thought is -- buy a cheap multi-drive modern SATA enclosure, then use a Firewire to SATA adapter -- way cheaper than the other solutions.
I can't be the only one who has wanted to do this, but no one seems to know if it works (including the companies selling the stuff).
    Anyone done it?

    An update of my experimentation:
    http://web.me.com/allenhuffman/Appleause/Home/Entries/2009/1/17FireWire_to_SATA_adapters_for_theMac.html
CoolDrives device does not support Port Multiplier enclosures, so it can only address one hard drive at a time. Bummer.
If anyone would come out with a FireWire 800 to eSATA (with Port Multiplier support), it would be a fantastic solution to this.

  • DVD/CD multi-drive burn alternative?

I purchased a Aleratec CD/DVD 1:2 Duplicator. The Alerate. said I could use it w/a mac if I bought DragonBurn to burn to multi drives at once. Well DragonBurn hangs and freezes with multi drives. Further research reveals the app hasn't been updated in 2+ years and the tech support is worthless.
Now Toast wont support multiple burns.so-- Is there an alternative to DragonBurn?

i once had three burners, two were internal and one was external firewire. I use Toast and make three copies, just select which burner to burn to. You just need multi processor power to do this without bogging down. Should work on that device of yours.

  • NB510-10D: Cannot get to run external multi drive PA3834E-1DV2

I have a new NB510-10D with 1Gb factory-fitted memory and purchased the Toshiba recommended external multi drive (PA3834E-1DV2) But I can't get it to run on my machine even when connected to 2 USB ports and on AC power.
The drive works fine when plugged into my desktop computer, what do I need to do or add to get it to run on my netbook?

    Hi
There are no special requirements needed.
The drive is just an USB 2.0 plug and play device so you dont need any drivers or software to get it running.
As you said, the drive works in connection with desktop PC so it seems the ODD is OK.
In your case I recommend checking the drive in all USB ports.
Set also the BIOS to default to ensure that right BIOS settings would be used.

  • Sat Pro L10 DVD Super Multi Drive

I have a new Satellite Pro L10 with DVD Super Multi Drive running XP Pro. I have not been able to write to the DVD drive - either it does not recognise the DVD in the drive or it blue screens and crashes when I am using the Windows Back-up facility before I can read the error message. I am now getting very nervous as I have not been able to back it up for the 6 weeks I have had it....
I can play pre-recorded DVDs (i.e. movies) in the drive and it can read Cds and some makes of DVD. The manual is singularly unhelpful on how to use/troubleshoot the Super Multi drive

    HI Christine,
Unfortunately not. The Toshiba specification for the L10 simply states that Sonic RecordNow and WinDVD Creator are supplied as bundled software.
    The only options are :-
    1. The software is pre-installed on the hard drive,
    2. The software is provided on the Toshiba tools & Utilities CD
    3. The software is provided on OEM CDs.
Toshiba use a combination of the above three methods depending upon which model of notebook is purchased. On some models item #2 is not supplied but has to be created by the purchaser.
When I bought my A30 it used a combination of #2 and #3 for the bundled software, with Drag'N'drop CD being supplied on the tools and utilities CD but with Microsoft Works and Onenote supplied on OEM CDs. Everything else was pre-installed oin the HD.
It seems strange that you have neither Sonic or Windvd Creator on you system.
It may be worth checking with the people where you purchased your notebook to ensure that they supplied all the necessary bits and pieces.
Sorry I can't be any more helpful but it is very unlikely that both products have been accidently deleted from the system, so the real issue is to locate the original source for them.

  • T61 no longer recognizes DVD super-multi drive

My T61 for some reason has stopped recognizing my DVD super-multi drive (GSA-U10N).  I do not use the optical drive often, so I am not sure when during the past couple of months this occured.  I have tried finding it using Lenovo System Toolbox and Device Manager.  I have tried restarting.  I have tried physically removing the drive and putting it back in.  No matter what I try, my T61 says that there is no optical drive.  The little green light next to the drive slot remains on all the time.
My T61 is a 7662 CTO, Core 2 Duo T7500, 4 GB ram, 100 GB HD, NVIDIA Quadro NVS 140M running Windows Vista Ultimate, 64-bit, SP2.
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

you should try to run a linux live cd, and see whether the drive is detected. If it is not, then either the cd drive or the motherboard is having a hardware problem.

  • Only Apple Branded Hard Drives Work in My Mid-2009 MacBook Pro

My Mid-2009 MacBook Pro (actually, my wife's) experienced a hard-drive failure about a year ago.  This was a 500GB 7200RPM drive that came BTO from Apple.
It's easy enough to replace HD's, so, I did it myself with a Seagate 7200RPM 500GB drive, the same model as the one from Apple, but I got this one from Seagate, not from Apple, so it didn't have the Apple logo (and firmware?) on it.  The drive did not work.  I was able to format the drive using Disk Utility, but when I tried to install Snow Leopard on it, it would fail.  I placed the new drive in my other MBP (early 2008), and installed SL, no problems.  Booted to it just fine.
I put it back in the 2009 MBP, and it would not boot - it would show the flashing folder with a question mark.  I put the drive in a usb enclosure and the MBP booted from it just fine (well, a little slower because the usb speed, I presume).
I bought another Seagate and experienced the same problem.  I bought a Hitachi and experienced the same problem.  I took it to an authorized Apple repair facility who told me that the HD was bad (which was obviously false, since all 3 HD's I tried worked just fine in my other computer).
So, I took it into Apple and gave them the whole story and they ran overnight hardware diagnostics and were unable to find (or fix) a problem.
So, I played stupid and brought it back again, saying "uh, my hard drive broke, can you fix it?" hoping that they would try to replace the HD and fix the problem or at least diagnose it.
Well, they put an Apple branded HD back in, and it works just fine.
Seemingly, that would be problem solved, and life has been fine for the last year.  But, now we bought an OptiBay to ditch the DVD drive and place a 750GB (non-apple) drive in the optical bay.  To my surprise, the non-apple drive works, but, it is pretty slow (we put our iPhoto library on there, and it chokes very badly when you ask it to do anything, such as zoom on a picture, play a video, go to full screen, etc.  It takes about 30 to 45 seconds of SBOD to perform those tasks.
I am wondering if there was any way we could have damaged the SATA connector or driver?  Why would only Apple branded drives work in the main HD bay? I don't know if an Apple branded drive would preform better in the optical bay or not.

I recently saw a similar situation described in another forum and someone directed the OP to look for a jumper on the drive. I raised my eyebrows--that sounded like old PATA technology--but, sure enough, the OP found a jumper, changed it and everything worked. This apparently changed the timing on the drive to match Apple products. I'm leaving town and won't have much time to search myself, but try a forum search for "SATA jumper" and see if something rings a bell.

  • External hard drives work on tiger but not on leopard. WHY?

My 2 external hard drives worked fine on tiger. I had the backup program and used it every week. Now that I loaded up leopard, I cant see the external hard drives. When I take the drives and plug them to my mac book pro which I have not yet upgraded, they come up fine.
I cant even see them in disk utility
    Please help

My external doesn't work either. It seems like it is trying to boot, but doesn't. Meanwhile, the Mac Pro churns and the fan goes into high gear. At that time the screen freezes and the little rainbow wheel just spins. The only way I could get the Mac back was to power down with the power button on the front of the CPU and unplug the external drive. It's just a backup drive but I would like access to it. I'm looking to see if the manufacturer has a patch online, but I'd appreciate any suggestions ion the meantime. I haven't upgraded to Leopard yet on my MacBook Pro, maybe I'll wait a few days... Anyone know what to do?

dvd/cd drive works but won't allow me to install new programs from disk, doesn't recognize the disk, what can I do?

Well I was able to obtain a work around download of Flash and it installed fine but Firefox tells me it needs updating so I go out, thinking I'm "IN" finally to update it and I get that issue of not being able to get the update for it.  It's a regular laptop, not a touch screen or one of those new fangled ones for todays world.  In fact it's a refurb so it's probably origin date was a year or so ago before all this MS stuff took off fully.  So not understanding why I'm feeling like I'm being BLOCKED from getting the updated Flash I need and desire.  If I click on the little "X" and tell it to ignore the warning the vid will play just fine but don't want to have to do that every time.  Must be a better way.
Again, I'm sorry for posting in the wrong forum, getting this posted in the Flash forum was my desire but the way Adobe has this set up I just couldn't figure it out.  I belong to ALLOT of forums and most are pretty straight forward but this one is confusing!

  • USB 3.0 External hard drive working only as USB 2.0

    Hello all.
I have a MacBook Pro mid 2012 (specs below) which has two USB 3.0 ports. I have a Kingston USB 3.0 stick and a Toshiba 1TB USB 3.0 external hard drive. With Lion/Mountain Lion/Mavericks, both stick and hard drive worked fine, but since I updated to OS X 10.10 Yosemite, both work as USB 2.0 devices, with slow transfer speed and, in the case of the hard drive, it has a blue/white LED that indicates the mode (blue = USB 3.0 / white = USB 2.0) and it only lights up with white color.
It's not a device problem, because both work on Windows 8.x machines. I was guessing that it was some kind of firmware or motherboard's usb driver problem but I looked for firmware updates and found nothing.
Is anyone having issues with USB 3.0 ports? Can you help me with this? Any advice would help.
Thanks a lot for your patience and help.

    Hi jesusbet,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
It sounds like the USB 3 ports on your MacBook Pro are not operating at the expected speed.
The first troubleshooting step I'd suggest in this case is to reset the System Management Controller (SMC) on your MacBook Pro using these instructions:
    Shut down the computer.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
Note: The LED on the MagSafe power adapter may change states or temporarily turn off when you reset the SMC.
    From:
Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
If the symptom continues, you can also reset the PRAM:
OS X Yosemite: Reset your computer’s PRAM
These two hardware resets can resolve many unexpected behaviors that affect hardware on a Mac.
    All the best,
    Jeremy

  • I need information on how Adobe Drive works and how to set it up

    Hey folks,
believe it or not, but I have been searching a lot on the web already on how to find information how Adobe Drive works and how to set it up.
Most information that I found is old and seems to be valid only for older versions of Creative suite. Here in the company we use CS5.5 and will switch to CS6 soon.
I already downloaded Adobe Drive 3 and installed it on my Mac. Unfortunately I don't know what to do next? Do I need Adobe CQ to make it work? Or can I use it with an existing SVN infrastructure, that we have here? Actually I would like to access the SVN via Adobe Bridge. But after the installation of Adobe Drive my Bridge CS5.5 is crashing while starting up, and I didn't find out how to fix this again.
Actually I just found the manual for Adobe Drive 3 and read it. Seems to be easy in case its working. But it's not in my case, as mentioned above.
Any idea what could be the problem?

    Thanks,
in the meantime I managed to re-setup Adobe Drive 3 again. Bridge CS5.1 is still crashing (i have a log-file with a detailed error-report, if somebody knows how to extract information from this.
At least now I can start Drive as a standalone application.
So now my main question is how to connect Drive 3 to our subversion infrastructure in the company. Does anybody have information on this?
