G4 Quicksilver won't sleep with Dell 2407

I unpacked and setup my Dell 2407 lastnight, and I'm happy with it, but have one query.
Once I had it set up, I set the computer to sleep, and the display went black, with the buttons turning yellow instead of green as they should, but the G4 didn't sleep, just stayed running (I could hear the fans and the power light stayed on, not pulsing as it would in sleep) and wouldnt wake again until I restarted.
The display is connected through VGA to the standard 64Mb Geforce 2 Twinview card, with the USB connected to a Belkin USB2 PCI card. I also have a Playstation 2 connected to the display, but I don't think this should affect the Mac. I have had a quick google about this and I have a feeling it may be related to being connected to the USB2 card and not the built in USB ports, but I'm not sure.

Thanks bhgdfh, I've just come back from work, plugged the screen into the built in USB instead of the USB2 card and its fine. All sorted now.

  • Macbook won't sleep with power adapter plugged in

    Hi,
My Macbook has stopped going to sleep if the power adapter is plugged in.
I have the power adapter energy setting to sleep after 30 minutes. When I got the Macbook (about a month ago) the thing would sleep until I pressed the spacebar.
Now, the screen blanks but otherwise the Mac remains awake.
If I close the lid the Mac immediately goes to sleep.
I have reset the SMU but this didn't fix the problem. I also checked disk permissions and verified the disk in Disk Utility - all good.
    Suggestions?
    Thanks,
    John

my MacBook has also stopped going to sleep with the power adapter plugged in or when using battery power, unless I close the lid. Did you ever figure out the problem? Did you try calling Apple Care?
    thanks,

  • G4 Quicksilver - Won't Sleep

Ever since I connected a CRT monitor to the 2nd port on the graphics card, my G4 HD won't go to sleep. The monitor will play the screen saver for a bit then go to black as programmed, but the computer, fan and all, keeps running full-on. The monitor plugged into the AGP port at the time was a 15" Studio Display. Now both monitors are gone and I'm using the AGP port with a DVI adapter for a 20" Cinema Display and the problem is continuing.
On a seperate note, this may or may not be related, upon occassion the machine won't wake up unless I do a hard reboot. Could this all be problems with the PRAM? I just read on another thread to try resetting it, but if anyone has any other ideas, I'd love to hear them!
    Thanks!

A number of sleep-related issues can appear after incremental Mac OSX updates, including the inability to properly go to sleep, problems waking from sleep, and having your display go to sleep without your Mac going to sleep. The most common culprit is Bluetooth. Try these tips to fix your sleep problems.
    WAKE UP
In System Preferences>Bluetooth, uncheck Allow Bluetooth Devices To Wake This Computer. If you are using a Bluetooth mouse and keyboard, you'll have to wake your Mac by pressing the power button.
    FILE CORRUPTION
Your Bluetooth preference file may be corrupt-you'll need to delete it. Turn Bluetooth off, then go to the /Users/user name/Library/Preferences folder. Look for a file called com.apple.Bluetooth.plist and trash it.The OS will create a new preference file when you enable Bluetooth again.
    ENERGY SAVER
If you have issues with a Mac or display that goes to sleep at inappropriate times, you may have a problem with Energy Saver. Delete the following .plist files and restart:
    -/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.PowerManagement.plist
-/Users/username/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systemuiserver.plist--(username is your name or System Administrators name).
    -/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.AutoWake.plist
A restart is very important after deleting these plists. After a reboot your Mac will then generate new ones.
In some cases, running MacOS X's cron tasks-maintenance that the OS performs automatically if you leave your Mac on 24 hours a day-can resolve many sleep problems. If you don't want to leave your Mac on, you can use MacJanitor, Yasu, or OnyX free at Versiontracker.com.
Some, in these forums, have had luck fixing sleep issues downloading the combo update from this site (yours may be corrupt), not Software Update, disconnect all firewire + USB devices except keyboard + mouse, Repair Permissions, re-install update, Repair Permissions again + try.
    Cheers!

  • Mac Mini 2009 SL 6.0.1 won't sleep with Wake on Demand turned on...

I'm having an issue where my Mac Mini 2009 won't go to sleep at all when I have Wake on Demand turned on. I have been manually making it go to sleep and then loath and behold its back on a few minutes later. I know it's supposed to turn on once every two hours or so, but my Mini appears to not be sleeping at all after it turns back on. I thought this feature was supposed to save me electricity and money, not the opposite. I also have the Mac to go to asleep after 5 minutes. It's not doing that either. I haven't checked the logs to see what's going on. Any ideas?

Nope. I did change a few settings and the mac now manages to sleep. However, it wakes a few minutes later and then eventually goes back to sleep. This process cycles.
I found some good info on this site...
    http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13727_7-10330473-263.html?tag=mncol
I basically just went into the terminal and with root privileges did a "pmset -a ttyskeepawake 0" which turns off the possibility of a remote login event.
Because my initial error message also was saying something about my airport I assumed it might be worth turning on AirPort on the Mini and forcing it not to make any connections to my AirPort Extreme station. At this point, I have turned off AirPort to see what it does with just the ttyskeepawake option turned off.
I might try a PMU reset to see if that has any effect.
Another thing that comes to mind is I have the Mac Mini hooked up to a Denon AV Receiver and then to an HDTV via a mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter. Perhaps, the Denon is waking it up?

this worked for a month but now it is back to its old state. • IMac display won't sleep with hot corner

I saw that this question was asked before but no answer was given. I got my iMac OS X Yosemite 10.10 brand new yesterday. I set up hot corners so that the display will go to sleep when I swipe it. However, no matter how carefully I swipe, it always comes right back on. I cannot get the display to sleep.
What am I doing wrong? Your advice would be appreciated.

  • WRT160Nv2 won't connect with Dell Wireless 1515 half-mini card

I just received a new Dell Studio 14z that has a Dell Wireless 1515 half-mini 802.11N card.  After messing around with it several times, I am still unable to get it to connect wirelessly to my WRT160Nv2 router.  Whenever I try to connect to the network, I get the following error from Windows Vista:
Wireless association failed because WIndows did not receive any response from the wireless router or access point.
I do use MAC Address filtering on the router, but I've added all 3 MAC address the system has (1 for wired, 1 for wireless, 1 for bluetooth).  I've also checked the WEP security key MANY times and am sure it is entered correctly.  I have also tried updating to the latest firmeware, 2.0.0.3 build 7.  Nothing seems to help at all.
I don't know what else to look at to determine the cause of the problem.  Does anyone have any suggestions about what the problem might be?
    Thank You

Did you reset the router after upgrading the router's firmware...If not then,Press and hold the reset button for 30 seconds.Release the reset button...Unplug the power cable from your router, wait for 30 seconds and re-connect the power cable...Now re-configure your router...
For the wireless computer you need the Mac Address of the wireless Adapter while enabling  MAC Address filtering on the router.

  • Won't sleep with 2 monitors

    Hi
My G4 GE will not sleep when I have dual monitors connected.
I have the stock AGP Rage Card with a Sony CRT.
And I have an additional PCI Rage card with an Apple Studio Display.
When the second monitor is connected, the mac will not go to sleep. (I click Sleep in the Apple menu - both monitors go out but the mac is still running).
If I disconnect the second monitor, everything is fine. The machine sleeps normally.
Anybody know why this is? Is it fixable? I've done the prefs trashing.

    Hi, IndiGo!.
    1. What changes did you make to your Mac before this problem arose? If the problem arose after making a change, it's possible the change is the cause. Is the addition of a "second monitor" the latest change?
    2. You wrote: "When the second monitor is connected, the mac will not go to sleep. (I click Sleep in the Apple menu - both monitors go out but the mac is still running)."This implies that whatever graphics card or monitor from the two pairs you specified that is "the second monitor" is not responding to Mac OS X power management commands. The Mac may then be in Doze, vs. Deep Sleep mode.
If the "PCI Rage" card is driving the second monitor, assure you have the correct drivers for such.
    Good luck!

  • New iMac won't sleep with internet sharing on

Less than 3 month old iMac (core i5) has stoppped being able to sleep when Internet Sharing is enabled. It took me a good while to narrow it down to that but I've confirmed that when Internet sharing is off, it will sleep as it's supposed to. When sharing is on though, not only will it not automatically sleep per the energy saver setting, it wo'nt even sleep when forced with the Apple command. The display will  turn off, but the machine does not sleep. I can tell by the facts that my wifi access on my iPhone continues to run off the iMac, and the Caps lock on the keyboard remains lit. (Too bad the blinking LED is no more on the new iMacs).
Sleep was working fine when I first got the new machine; it seems to have stopped shortly after I upgraded to Lion. (I think it may have been working for a few days after installing Lion, but I'm not positive...I'm thinking now I just thought it was asleep because the display would turn off.)
I've looked at all the related sleep posts I could find but nothing seems to address this particular issue. I know I could just turn off sharing whenver I want it to sleep, but tha't's like having to disconnect my car battery when I want to shut the car off.
    Any help is appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Jamie

Well, I'm certainly no expert at this and I'd never enable internet sharing (being too concerned about the health of my Mac and/or not knowing what untoward sites/networks/people may be seeking access), but it seems to me that having it turned on means that your computer is sharing a connection, so anytime anyone on the network seeks access, it will either wake up the Mac or cause it to stay awake. Here is an excerpt from the Help Menu (in Finder) (which has nothing to do with your question, but I found it interesting nonetheless):
If your Internet connection and your local network use the same port (Ethernet, for example), investigate possible side effects before you turn on Internet sharing. In some cases (if you use a cable modem, for example) you might unintentionally affect the network settings of other ISP customers, and your ISP might terminate your service to prevent you from disrupting its network.

  • IMac G5 Won't Sleep with USB Hard Drive Attached

I purchased an external USB powered hard drive, connected it, put the computer to sleep, and the computer immediately awoke saying the device was not put away properly.
I then unmounted the drive, put the computer to sleep, and got the same message.
Called Seagate support, and they said it's an OS issue.
    Returned the drive.
Bought a Hitachi USB powered hard drive. Exact same thing happens.
Is it not possible to put this machine to sleep when attached to a USB powered hard drive? I had no problem with a powered USB drive.

Every external drive in an enclosure has an on/off switch, read the manual that came with the drive, or ask Hitachi. You seem to have it turned on permanently. If you don't turn it off before unplugging it, of course the computer will complain that it was improperly put away - you need to drag the image of the drive to the Trash to eject it before removing the USB cable or click on eject under File in the Menu bar.

  • 10.6.8 won't sleep with 3 finger keyboard strokes

After reinstalling my SL OS, the Control + Shift + Eject keystroke won't put my computer to sleep anymore. Any suggestions?

Does the sleep menu work?  If so, try repairing permissions and restarting your iMac.  Check your keyboard shortcut settings in System Preferences.

  • Mini won't sleep with a FreeAgent drive - help!

Howdy. I'm a new mini owner and I'm loving it. I'm having a problem with a FreeAgent USB drive though. Without the FreeAgent, my mini sleeps no problem. However, when the FreeAgent is attached the mini goes to sleep then wakes back up right away. This happens both with the FreeAgent plugged into a hub or plugged into the mini itself. I tried unmounting the FreeAgent before telling the mini to sleep - no change, the mini still wakes up. Any help?????

USB devices can cause unusual behavior in sleep patterns of the host systems, and this particular behavior as you have described it, is not entirely unusual.
If you are able to eject the drive to the icon disappears off the desktop, it shows that there are no active files or processes running on the system which relate to the drive. That's a common sleep-related problem, caused by something active on the device that keeps the system awake.
However, the fact there's nothing active on the drive doesn't mean the drive is not active in itself. In some drives, when the host system sleeps, and once the connection to the device is therefore dropped, the device issues a sleep command and in the case of a drive, will then spin down. Unfortunately, with many drives, when that spin-down occurs, the host system sees it as activity on the bus and wakes up again.
This could be the behavior you are experiencing. I had one such system with a similar problem which was resolved by setting the system to put the hard drive to sleep when possible (in the energy saver preference pane), but another user at the time mentioned that a similar issue had been resolved by UNchecking that option!
Unfortunately, since the Mac commonly relies on input via the USB ports to wake it from sleep, there's no way that I am aware of to prevent it reacting to any activity present there if the external device creates it.
