G4 running 10.3.9 on a go slow

Evening all
My Mac has recently been running very slowly, especially when browsing the internet. I'm running Firefox 1.5 on OSX.3.9, and things are sometimes painfully slow. I have recently upgraded to iTunes 7.1 - and this seems to be quite a lot for my old(ish!) mac to handle. Could this be the reason for things going slow?
Is there any maintenance / cleanup beyond the usual emptying of internet caches etc. that anyone can recommend before I start trying to revert back to old versions of iTunes?
It could just be that the Mac is getting a bit old now, but I don't really know where to start tweaking it to see if I can get things running a bit quicker without having to upgrade.
Any help gratefully received!!

  • Discoverer report runs okay in test system but very slow in live

    Hi all
My Discoverer report takes about 5 minutes to run in the test environment. The same report (absolutely the same SQL in the custom folder in the admin edition and the same conditions and sort in the Desktop edition) takes at least 45 mins to run in live.
Has anyone faced a problem like this? How can I speed up my report in the live environment? I am using Discoverer version 4.1.48.06.00
    Thanks in advance!
    Regards
    Aruna

    Hey Aruna.
Are you sure the 2 environments are exactly the same (ie: one recently copied to the other)? Reason I'm asking is that if one has many more records, or one has an index, etc. then that would, of course, cause a difference.
What about the time when you're running it? Is the production environment an Apps environment and they're running batch jobs, updating shipping info in the last week of the month, etc?
I would first of all see if the environments are the same by trying something as simple as running the query in TOAD or SQL Navigator or SQL Developer in both environments and then seeing if there's the same difference. If not, then move on to the Discoverer side of things.
If they're still different, then are the Disco environments the same? Have you turned query prediction, etc. off in DEV but not in PROD?
Is the DEV box a hot damn new UNIX box with all the good stuff like oodles of memory, multi-processors, etc? And is the PROD box a Commodore 64? Okay, just kidding on the last test, but you get the idea.
Start at the same relative time (ie: morning). Start TOAD, etc. and see the speed difference there. Then move on to Disco and see the speed difference.

  • Internet running slowly, videos not playing well, everything slowing down. Wifi signal is strong, not sure what the problem is. Help please.

I have had my mac since December of this year. Suddenly it will not play video with stopping every few seconds to load, and my internet is running slower even though the connection is fine and everythiny else in the house on wifi is working well. Whats the issue?

Run this web based browser scan, it will tell you in red and provide a link to the download page.
    https://www.mozilla.com/en-US/plugincheck/
Also another great free program is OnyX, just run everything, cleans your machine out on a system level.
You can cancel the reboot to run another cleaning section, just make sure you reboot at the end before using the computer.

Also use the Firefox web browser, it's insanely faster, the fasest of all browsers. The choice of Add-ons is numerous, personalization is just awesome. Everything can be changed, moved around etc. Persona's, themes etc. Just insane.
Not only that, Firefox is for Windows, OS X and Linux, the same browser on all.

Do a bandwidth test after you fixed Flash.

  • Bex Query using BICS running fine in Rich client but v. slow in Launchpad

    Hi guys,
At my client client we are using BICS to use Bex Query in Web Intellience, and i created a report that takes less than 10 seconds once run in Rich client but when i create the same Webi report in Launch pad: the list of values take forever to refesh and the report runs for about 30 mins before it displays data..
In both cases it shows data but the time difference is huge.
Kindly direct me on what could be the possible issues considering this case.
    Regards,
    Sheikh

    Hi Sheikh,
There are some known issues with the BICS connectivity and LOV's when retreiving data in BI4.0
This is detailed in the note - 1581323 - BI 4.0 Web Intelligence very slow performance when using BICS
Basically there are some registry changes which need to be made to result in quicker data retreival. The full fix is scheduled for Patch 2.1. It may not be your precise issue but the registry change should help I believe.
Can you test with the registry fix and let me know if this improves matters for you:
    Resolution
The following fix is planned for Patch2.1 (w/c 27th June 2011):
Add 2 new registry entries (string keys) under
For the 32-bit using Rich Client: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\SAP BusinessObjects\Suite XI 4.0\default\WebIntelligence\Calculator]:
            For the 64-bit Web Intelligence:[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\SAP BusinessObjects\Suite XI 4.0\default\WebIntelligence\Calculator]
    "BICSLOVChunkSize"="4000"
    "BICSResultChunkSize"="100000"
Note 1: In a specific test case, a value of 4000 yielded good results, reducing fetch time from 20 minutes to under 5 minutes.
    Note 2: Registry key usage:
BICSLOVChunkSize is defined as a string. It help create a chunk of List of Value of maximum the number given. The bigger the number the more likely the retrieval of the list of value will crash. Consider using a value between 100 and 5000. If you have 1000 values in your database and you set the BICSLOVChunkSize to 200. Then you will see a hierarchical view of 5 groups having eah 200 list of value.
BICSResultChunkSize is defined as a string. It limits the number of results that can be retrieved as a List of Value. If you have a List of Value which contains 1 Millions values and set the BICSResultChunkSize to 1000 than only the first 1000 rows will be retrieved. Therefore you will get a partial result set for the list of value.
    Parallel correction for interoperability:
A parallel fix has been delivered via component BW-BEX-OT-BICS by way of a correction attached to Note 1593802.
    Workaround:
Set all the values of column u201COrder for F4 Helpu201D to 0 (zero) in BW Transaction RSD1 so that the attributes are not retrieved.
-> List of members are now displayed in 20 seconds.
I hope this is a very helpful answer to you.
    Kind regards,
    John

  • Fan Runs All the time and computer is slow!!!

    Hello All,
My fan is running all the time, the battery won´t hold it´s charge like in the beginning, it´s a replacement battery, but the computer is starting to act erratically. I think it may be a temperature problem, but am not sure what to do about it.
    Help!!!
    SEQU

    Welcome to the Apple discussions.
First, I would run your Apple hardware test, to ensure the fan is operating correctly. Find the original OS X disc that came with your system that says 'AHT Version x.x' in small print on the label. Insert it, reboot holding the option key down, choose Apple hardware test, click the arrow to the right, follow directions and choose the extended test. You should hear the fan come on as it tests it. Does it give you any error messages? If you have either of the TechTool programs, they can do the same testing.
Assuming the hardware checks out, when you hear the fan go on, bring up your activity monitor, which is on your hard drive in applications/utilities. Do you see any program consistently using 50% or more of the system? That would cause your system to run hot.
Do you have any print jobs which didn't complete normally? OS X can try and complete the job, which can use CPU cycles, and generate heat.
You can download a temperature monitor from http://www.bresink.com/osx/TemperatureMonitor.html if you want to monitor the system temperature.
On your battery, what is the full charge capacity and cycle count? Click the blue apple, about this mac, more info, and Power. Also, how long a charge does it hold?

  • Running Sitestudio 10gR4 under XP guest painfully slow

    Running virtualbox 4.0.0 r69151 - Guest XP, Host Fedora 14 x86-64
Other XP specific applications run very well including Microsoft Project and Visio. Even SQL Developer and JDeveloper run well in VirtualBox. The only application that I have trouble with is SiteStudio 10gR4. There is a lot of hard disk activity when loading a site. Under a native XP machine, a site typically loads in about 10 seconds. Under VirtualBox, this now takes about two minutes. Once loaded, the site is slow when loading items such as Page Templates as well.
Any ideas? Is anyone else running SiteStudio in VirtualBox and NOT having these issues?
    Thanks, Ken

    Hi,
There are some others who have reported similar issues who had been seeing benefit from applying the configuration setting from within the Host OS X terminal application as suggested here:
Re: Windows 7 VERY SLOW on Yosemite/Fusion 7.1

Don't know if it will fix your problem as I personally have not seen the issue, but it appears to work for others.
    Hope this helps,

  • Macbook seems to run very hot with safari and very slow on other users

    Hi,
My macbook has been running hot with the fan on full boar recently. Through some deduction I've realised that is safari 4 making this happen? What would be causing this? Also since a similar time my wife's log in has been running really slow. She never installs anything and hasn't got admin rights?
Any help would be very appreciated.
    Thanks

    HI, Weaver@Swampfoot
this might be due to graphics - depending on the websites you are surfing to. try to check whether the temperature goes down if you close windows with graphics/video content; some news-sites cause my MB heating up with the for me unwanted advertisements, which i close as fast as they open.
on the other hand, it might be something else. open "Activity Monitor" (under Utilities), click "CPU", make sure that you have "all Processes" enabled (in the choser-window above the tabel). This gives you a list of all processes running, ordered according to their cpu use. please, note the ones which have highest cpu values, and report back.

  • Importing photos from my computer, running windows, to iPad Air is extremely slow!

    Hey guys,
I am syncing about 30 GB of photos and videos from my computer to my iPad using the latest version of iTunes (just updated today).
It's not my first time syncing my photo library. I've done it on my iPad 2, iPad 3 and even the iPhone 4S and this has been by far the slowest: almost two hours and I am not even half-way through.
Has anyone else had this problem? Sure, I mean recently... I have seen many other discussions on the issue.
    Thanks in advance

I am not sure whether I can say I fixed the problem, but not including the videos made the syncing speed normal again. It is not even that much (a couple of gigs compared to 25 GB of HD photos) but apparently it has a massive effect.
So next time, just uncheck "include videos" and you should be good to go. Who knows? Maybe Apple introduced that option in the recent iTunes versions untill they fix the bug or whatever it is.

  • HP Pavilion Elite E9120F running hot, what fan do I need to buy. It is running at over 90 degrees

My desktop HP Pavilion E9120F began to run hot, fan was coming on very slow, I cleaned really good, was a bit dusty.. I think this may have caused the problem. It is not running at 90 degrees farenheit. I replaced the video card so I could run video programs thinking that would fix it, didn't. I am wondering do I need to buy a new fan to keep the temp down or is my CPU damaged and can't be fixed? I can still run my programs but CPU gets to 100% and it never gets under 78 degrees. Help I don't know if I should just buy new fans or what?

If this is your CPU, it's range is 55°C - 71°C.   Here is how to measure a fan

  • Mac is running very slowly.

    Hi Apple Community,
My mac has been running very slowly, and there has been several other problems as well. I have a early 2009 iMac, running OS X 10.9.5. First of all, I have recently moved all of my photos and music to an external hard drive to clear up the internal hard drive, and Time Machine is also backing up to an external hard drive, and the internal hard drive is now about 60% free. I thought that would be able to get my Mac to run quicker, but it is still has slow as it was before. I have read recent community posts on what to do about this, one suggested downloading Etresoft to get a report on the condition of my mac. I ran Etresoft (I honestly don't know what to make of anything in the report), and the report is here:
    Problem description:
Mac runs very slowly, applications will take longer than usual to open. Internal hard drive is about 60% full, and 3 external hard drives are used to hold photos, music, and backups.

You need to uninstall all Norton Antivirus softwarwe/ utilities.
    https://support.norton.com/sp/en/us/home/current/solutions/kb20080427024142EN_En dUserProfile_en_us
Also, uninstall all Seagate hard drive software.
In addition, you need to install more RAM into your iMac.
Your year and model IMac can take a max. total of 8 GBs of RAM.
I strongly recommend that you purchase and install the maximum amount of RAM.
Correct, compatible and reliable Mac RAM can ONLY be purchased from online RAM sources Crucial memory or OWC (macsales.com).

  • Will an iBook G3 run fast with OS9?

I have a 700mhz iBook G3 with OSX Tiger and maxed out RAM. It runs okay with OSX, but it's slow and the 20gb hard drive runs fairly hot at 50-54 degrees celsius. I was wondering about whether it would run much faster and cooler if I did a clean install of OS9 on it, updating it to 9.2.2. I know a lot of software wouldn't run anymore on it, but the downgrade would be worth it if it would run a LOT faster and be capable of video editing with old versions of Final Cut or Premiere. Would the old versions of Photoshop, internet browsers, etc... be able to create and read decently modern file formats?
Would this work? How much faster would it run? What do you think about this idea?
    Please let me know. Thanks.

Do you have the original system CDs that came with the iBook?
I wouldn't advise trying to run Mac OS 9 if you want to use the iBook on the internet. The browsers that are available for OS 9 are not nearly as up to speed as those available for Mac OS X.
The iBook is about seven years old, so it is not going to be a speedy computer, no matter what you do. Probably the best upgrade you could make is a new, faster, larger hard drive, but it may not be worth the time, trouble, or expense.

  • How do I know if my CPU has decreased speed or what speed my cpu is running?

I recently noticed that when running PRO app my MBP seems pretty slow unusually. I have met this occasion before . I heard that when temperture is too high , the CPU will decrease its speed to protect itself.  How do I know if my CPU has decreased speed or what speed my cpu is running?
    Thank you!

Enter in the search field of Google 'CPU speed monitors' and you should get some results.
