G4 Sawtooth/AGP upgrade from 10.4 to 10.4.3 mouse cursor becomes a 'square'

I used a retail 10.4 family pack to upgrade all of our G4s. One of them though, a sawtooth, seems to have problems with this upgrade. I installed 10.4 on a clean partition; sometimes even this aborted and said " Please try installing again", but I have successfully accomplished a 10.4 upgrade several times. The problem enters when trying to do software update. After these updates (10.4.3, itunes, ipod, airport, etc), the machine boots ok (the last few times), but the mouse cursor has changed to a small (usually white/ sometimes purple) square. 3rd party items in this computer are a MAXTOR Hard Drive, a non-apple DVD-ROM/CD drive; an NVIDIA GeForce2 MX video card, and some kingston and peripheral.com memory; all of which performed flawlessly with Panther and seem ok with 10.4. I would like to be able to use software update on a regular basis, but looks like this may cause some problems. Any suggestions appreciated. Also, can someone tell me why sometimes a 57M upgrade was offered for 10.4.3 and other times the 107M combo is offered?
Latest bit, I tried to repeat 4.0 installation on the 1st partition (erase and install) and it is repeating the please try again stuff. Really frustratiing! btw OS 9.2.2 installed on second partition and works just fine. (I have had this machine since the AGP macs first came out.)

Hi all,
Anybody though about flashing the card with a mac rom?
As mentioned above same gforce 2 card but for Mac seems to work ok.
I never tried to flash a video card (so some help would be appreciated but I guess if it works with a Mac card why shouldn't work with a PC card flashed with a Mac rom?
I know from reading the forum that this seems to happen only with the PC card using the ROM Revision: 1028F which makes the card a mix card (works with PC and Mac).
I don't know what they have changed in the 10.4.3 upgrade but they have definitely stopped supporting this card.
Any thoughts?
Please anything welcome at this point.
I am willing to flash the card and try this if someone can give me specification on how to do it and which rom I should use.
I found so many info on the net on how to do this, but nothing really specific on this card. Actually all the article are quiet old and the suggestion is to use this card on the Mac as they are natively supported by OSX as it has the rom.
Waiting or suggestion

  • Upgrading from CS6 to CC causes the extention .prproj to become corrupted.

After upgrading from CS6 to CC, by installing CC then uninstalling  CS6:  In Windows 7 "prproj" became associated (i.e., "open with") with  Acrobat (?) and will not re-associate with Premiere CC.  Using the windows  procedure to change the "OPEN WITH" target yields no effect whatsoever  --nothing gets changed and it Acrobat still tries to open it.  If I had to guess, this appears to be a  registry-writing bug wherein one of the versions somehow corrupted the registry,  rendering it useless to Premiere  CC.
Premiere  crashes often enough (at least once every day or so) to make it necessary  to go into the backups and retrieve the last auto save. It is harder to do this without a working link.
I already have the latest CC installed so the questions are: Is this a known bug?  Is there a workaround??
    Thanks.

    Some more information:
Premiere does not appear on the default "Open with" list  for .prproj --only Acrobat Pro (which is not a CC install if that makes any difference).  Choosing another application via browse is ignored.
In order to rule out actual Windows as the problem, I tested, and was successfully able to re-associate other extensions (to other applications) using "Open with".  The only extension not responding is .prproj. This suggests either a premiere problem in specific, or an Adobe problem in general since the association for .prproj is stuck on Acrobat.

  • Need advice in upgrading a sawtooth AGP G4

Hi, I have a sawtooth AGP G4 computer and I want to upgrade it to a 1ghz CPU (Encore/ST G4 1.0 GHz) with a new graphics card (at least a 128mb card). I know that the Encore/ST G4 1.0 GHz CPU upgrade is really reliable but what would you recommend for a graphics card? I was looking for a ATI Radeon 9200 128mb. Can't seem to find reviews. I'll use this computer to do some graphic design work and some games (WarCraft 3, Simcity 4, Halo1, Age of empire 3) I think these upgrades will work on my machine. Here the current specs :
    Machine Model: PowerMac3,4
    CPU Type: PowerPC G4 (2.9)
    Number Of CPUs: 1
    CPU Speed: 467 MHz
L2 Cache (per CPU): 1 MB
    Memory: 768 MB
    Bus Speed: 133 MHz
    Boot ROM Version: 4.2.8f1
    Serial Number: XB1121UJKXQ
    Sales Order Number: M7627C/A

    Hi everyone,
I received my graphic's card on thursday and my CPU on friday. I found a ATI 9800 on Ebay for 130$ and I got my CPU upgrade on the sonnet technologies site. I got the 1.8ghz CPU upgrade at 269$.
Installation was actually pretty easy and straight forward. Booted up my G4 and WOW what a big difference! I did a clean install with OS 10.5. Installed all my working apps (adobe CS3 etc.. ) and did a series of everyday tasks like creating a 25'x25' 300 dpi file and apllied filters to it just to see the differnce. I couldn't beleive my eyes. Did some layout in Illustrator and Quark and it was perfect for my needs.
I installed WarCraft 3, SimCity 4 rush hour and Age Of Empires 3. Everything was just perfect. I can run them in 1024x768 32 bit with almost all the graphics set to high and no problem as far as I can see. Looked really nice on my 21" viewsonic display.
I didn't do any bench tests cause I really don't know what software to use or what they all actually mean in detail.
I'm really quite happy with my newly upgraded G4. Only drawback is with multitasking. Seems like it can do less tasks at once compared to an iMac core duo cause my upgrade only has one CPU. But because this machine is used primarily for work I bring home or games it's not a problem at all.
Total upgrade price : 430$ includes shipping etc..
Price of a new iMac :1,299.00 (same kit except it's a core duo 2ghz and I wouldn't know what to do with my 21" screen. I have no place to use it as a second display)
new G5 tower : 2,899.00 (which would give me the lattitude of adding multiple hard drives)
I didn't do any research in finding a newer G4 cause I treated my G4 very well still looks new! I would've had to upgrade the graphic's card and such... So I think the best deal was to upgrade with new parts and give it another 5 years or so.
Hope my post helps you out !
    Thanks for all your help!

  • Upgrading from 9.0 to tiger

how can i do a clean install and save programs installed (photoshop, illustrator, quark, etc) i don't have the disc's but they are legal copies...i bought the mac at church sale and want to upgrade but i want to use the pre-loaded software...any way i can make copies of the programs to cd and then reinstall (and then keep as a backup)...help, i am a mac newbie...and is tiger the best option for the g4.

Looks like you've got a Sawtooth (AGP) or Mystic (Gigabit) G4 (To tell the two apart, pull down the access panel and look for an internal FireWire port on the motherboard; Sawtooth systems have it; Mystics don't.)
You'll need firmware 4.2.8f1 in either case, which is accessible using the link given to you earlier in this thread.
The good news: you can install X right alongside 9 if you want, and they won't mind each other's company on the same volume. Your hard-fought apps? SAFE! Even better: patch to 9.2.2 and then install Tiger so you can draw from all those OS 9 apps while you run OS X.
You might benefit from a RAM upgrade to 1 GB if you plan on using OS X for the better part of your Mac esperience. Graphics card and CPU upgrades may help get more life from this venerable war horse of the Mac universe, but only the brave or foolhardy would have the chutzpah and the cash to attempt such feats.
On stock versions of the Sawtooth or Mystic, Tiger may not be the best choice on account of feature limitations, but with Leopard in ihe chute, it will be the safest, as Apple will patch it until 10.6/11/whatever succeeds it.

  • Sawtooth AGP Video Limitations ???

I have one of the last of the Sawtooth models, a 500 MHz tower with the Rage 128 "Pro" 2X AGP video card in it. I would like to upgrade the video. I picked up a NVIDIA Apple G4Force4 32MB AGP Video Card with a VGA port today on eBay. I suspect that it is 4X, but info about this card is non-existant on the internet. Will this computer see more than 16 Megs of VRAM ??? Can these Sawteeth AGP models benefit from AGP upgrades ???

    Well, Guess what?
The card advertised on eBay as a 32-meg nVidia GeForce4 turned out to be something quite else.
I got it yesterday and installed it.
It reads in the System Profiler as a nVidia GeForce4 MX AGP with 64 megs of VRAM and it works perfectly. It has VGA and ADC outputs and from what I can find on the internet I guess it must have come out of a 2002 Quicksilver.
    Thanks to all.

  • G4 AGP upgraded and now freezing and needs restart???? HELP

hey guys, so i recently bought a powermac g4 agp "sawtooth" and upgraded it. i put in a 128gig seagate hdd, a 1ghz sonnet encore gt processor, 1 gig ram (2x128 and 2x256), and then filled the pci slots with a radeon 9200 128mb graphics card, a 4 port usb 2.0 card, and a wireless pci card because the g4 could only take the old airport and i wanted 54mbps, finally a pioneer dvd burner to replace the old dvd ram cd rom drive... sooo all these things worked as they were supposed to when i added them, but now with them all in the computer has been freezing and telling me i need to reset it with the little error window, i thought it was leopard so i downgraded back to tiger and same restart problem is occuring.. wondering if its the power supply cannot support all the peripherals? no idea though.. any suggestions???
also a problem ive had ever since i got the machine up and running when i replaced the motherboard... not every time the computer goes to sleep but sometimes it wont wake up from sleep... it sounds like the computer is waking up but there is no image sent to the monitor... any idea whats goin on here??

First try a PMU reset. See Mac PRAM, NVRAM, CUDA/PMU & Battery Tutorial
Is the error window you are getting in multiple languages? If so, you are getting a kernal panic. KPs are generally caused by hardware, frequently RAM & sometimes by USB devices. To start troubleshooting remove the wireless card & USB card & disconnect all external devices except your mouse, kbd & monitor. Post back with the results. Basically, you have made too many changes at one time & it's dificult to know the cause.
May be a solution on one of these links.

  • Can't upgrade from 9.04 without graphical problems maybe from ATIextension?

    Hello,
I figured before I make the leap into purchasing a new machine (Mac or PC-still not sure) I'd post a reoccuring problem with my old Power Mac G4. I have tried on a number of occasions to upgrade from the 9.04 preinstalled system to 9.1 and then even higher. 9.2.1 and 9.2.2 to no success. I'll explain. Here are my machine specs:
    ---Power Mac G4
---400mhz (I believe it is an AGP Graphic not a PCI)
    ---512mb ram
---10gb hd, but i have a 120gb wd internal in the upper brack spot right above the 10g. I've been using the 120 gb split in 2 partitions as my 9.04 startup disk.
    ---external zip 250 usb attached.
---LaCie 52x cd burner attached via firewire
Everytime I try to run the update (and I have downloaded these more than once, thinking maybe it was corrupt on download) it leaves trails on my screen. For instance, when I scroll up and down in windows using the arrows all the text corrupts to the point you can't read it. If you move the windows around the screen that leaves trails and corrupts as well. I took some time and I think narrowed it down (maybe). If I remove the NEW ATI graphics extensions from the extensions folder (the ones from 9.1 install and replace them with the 9.04 (ones from my startup disk). The problem vanishes. So in a sense I'm running 9.1 with 9.04 ATI extensions. I did what the read me says for installing the update and I believe the firmware was up to date where it called for.
The overall hope was to maybe someday put OS X on this G4, which if I remeber correctly you're suppose to be able to do on a mac this old. But I'm having no luck what so ever.
Any help would be appreciated. Maybe I can keep this machine running a bit longer before having to invest in another one.
    Thanks again.

    Hi, Creative -
One thing that comes to mind is that OS 9 (at least 9.1 and later, maybe earlier, too) installs two ATI extensions when only one is needed, the one specific to the kind of graphics card in the machine. Having both active can cause some problems.
Specifically, the two extensions are named -
        ATI Rage 128 3D Accelerator
        ATI Radeon 3D Accelerator
Check in Apple System Profiler (on ASP's Devices & Volumes page, click the info triangles on the bus labelled PCI) to determine which card you have, Rage or Radeon, and then disable (or remove) the extension for the other kind of card.

  • Can not upgrade from Panther 10.3.9 to Tiger 10.4

I have a PMG4 AGP 1.4 ghz (upgrade from OWC) 2 GB ram and three SCSI hard drives 147/147/40 (upgrades from OWC).
I upgraded to Tiger 10.4 from Panther about six months ago. And the upgrade never worked. After the upgrade for Tiger, the screen would look gray with the Apple logo and the spinning icon, then it would remain gray but the Apple logo will change to a circle with a diagonal line across it and it will stay that way forever.
So I been stuck with Panther ever since. (My iMac-G4 Video Special Edition did take the upgrade very well). I called OWC and they said that their drives were tested for Tiger and didn‘t have any problems. (how about the processor upgrade?)
I also took the computer to Apple store for advise, and one of their techs told me that the hard drive could be the problem.
So last night I decided to try it again but on the other drive (the one I‘m using as a starup disk with panther 10.3.9). Same thing.
By doing the same thing it tells me that the hard drives are the problem.
Please help because I really don‘t know what to do of this.
    Thanks,
    Oscar

You might try removing third party hard ware. Specifically, the SCSI drives. Get the systme back to original configuration with only keyboard and mouse and give it a go.

  • Upgrade from FCE2 to FCE HD3.5?

Hi. I'm currently using FCE2 and am considering getting Apples upgrade to FCE HD3.5. However I'm unsure whether its possible to upgrade directly to HD3.5 or whether I need to 1st upgrade to FCE3 HD? I noticed on Apples website it says "upgrade from FCE HD 2 or 3 for $99.00" however my understanding is that my copy of FCE2 is not an HD version therefore making me wonder if I can do a direct upgrade to FCE HD3.5? Thanks.

FCE 3.5 only needs 512MB RAM and will work with G4, G5 and Intel Core Duo processors. (It will actually work with Core Solo Macs though Apple doesn't recommend them).
It needs AGP or PCI cards - so that covers pretty well every Mac made in the last decade or so.
I believe you can throw FCE2 away - but it's not doing any harm is it?
You might upset it if it suspects you don't want it any more - old applications can be very sensitive!
    Ian.

  • Extensions break on upgrade from 10.3.9-10.4.x

    Hi folks,
I just did an upgrade from 10.3.9 to 10.4.8 on a fairly well upgraded Sawtooth (dual 1 gig proc, 2 gig RAM, 250 gig SATA HDs in a mirrored RAID).
I'm getting errors on startup that several extensions "weren't installed correctly" and I'm wondering if any of them are particularly critical for anything I do on this machine, which is used as a web/mysql/dns server. The extensions are:
    OpenOWScreamerAudio.kext
    OpenScreamerAudio.kext
    GossamerNDRVSupport.kext
    PatchedBlockStorageDrive.kext
    Thanks.

    Yikes. It's getting worse.
Now the cache for my SIIG sata controller isn't accepted any more... system/library/caches/com.apple.romextensions/SIIG3512ER4.kext
and my SATA drives aren't showing up.
    The full scenario is this:
    1) Use the Disk Util Restore function to copy the contents of my mirrored RAID (two 250 gig sata drives) onto an external firewire drive.
    2) Run the update from 10.3.8 to 10.4.8 on the firewire drive on a separate machine. Test. Runs OK except for the extension problem in my earlier post, which doesn't seem to affect functionality.
    3) After running for a couple days from the fw drive with no further trouble, use Disk Utility's Restore to overwrite the 10 3 9 version on the RAID with the newer 10.4.8 version. Run "repair permissions" on the RAID. After that, the RAID drives are greyed out in DU's left panel. Restart DU with intent to run Repair Disk, but RAID drives don't even mount and aren't visible for mounting.
    4) reboot. No progress.

  • Your chance to critique me and an upgrade from research to benchmarks

OK you know what I have in my siggy so these are some parts I am looking at and I want to hear what everyone thinks. It isn't often that a moderator puts this kind of thing forward but I think it may spark some good conversation that could help everyone when they considure an upgrade. If the topic goes OK then I will add too it as we go. I will place my order in a couple weeks and I can do a complete diary from order to completion with pics and everything.
    Casework
    http://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?item=N82E16811133154
Basically more room than my existing Tt Mid Tower which is quite dated now. I want more airspace inside to further improve cooling as this will become an SLI Game Rig.
The Armour casework allows a lot of flexability for componant placement, connextivity and even cooling options from Air to Water in a well planned layout. I may make some optional upgrades to it at some point for extra case fans but for a starter build I will start with what comes in the box. I do have a HardCanno13 fan controller and I will use that and control the fans and temp zones.
    Power Supply
    http://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?item=N82E16817711002
This was a critical choice for me. My existing PSU is well suitable to handling however it would become a wiring nightmare to deal with dual 7800GT cards as well as SATA Raid Drives. Let's face facts as well using a window case and having some crappy looking metal box in the corner just does not look that great. However whenever I considure a PSU I want to know that it will handle the load, run cleanly, maintain good voltage levels in a high end machine, have plenty of 12v amps and a good company to stand behind it. Also with the Diamond Board I have to be concerned that all voltages are pressent. This is not the case with many modern PSU's including Enermax's new Liberty Line. My other choice was a PCP&C unit but I don't want to spend my whole wad on just a PSU. The OCZ is pricy but I should not have to do anything except plug and go.
    CPU
    http://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?item=N82E16819103584
OK this is an item we all talk about. The CPU really is the heart of the machine and a good healthy CPU is what I tend to choose. Granted this is not an FX-60 or a 4800+ X2. However it should fall in between those and cost less to boot. I will be overclocking at some point and the Opty's have a better reputation for good overclocks than does the 4799 but the jury is out yet as to how it will stack up to the FX-60. Time and experience will tell. I will start with Stock cooling and so long as that performs well I may stay there as I have in past machines.
    Memory
    http://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?item=N82E16820146397
As I look around at the equipment most of you use this is a brand that hasn't gotten a lot of press recently. It has great specs and also runs on VDIMM voltages that the board does support. it should give me some nice overhead for overclocking without breaking the bank.
Of course now let's remember that this will be an upgrade and not a complete system build. And there will be more in a few months as I add the second Vid Card for a well rounded SLI system. I will also provide my opinions, commentary and pictures throughout the process.
Of course this can become pick on the moderator day and I will allow that so long as it pertains to the subject matter. But this is also a good chance for those that are considuring an upgrade to work on one in a virtyualk kind of way and maybe learn something that will help you build or upgrade a system as well.
So let's get started on this experiment.

Quote from: Tiresmoke on 09-February-06, 22:26:32
Let me also remind you that your welcome to post in this thread about your upgrade as well. I don't need to be the only one being critiqued after all. HeHeHe
Feel free to critique thoughts on my debacle - Please! Since this is about upgrading.
I'm kinda between a "rock & a hard place" about my potential upgrade choices vs $ available. Especially in light of the fact that M2 mobos (or whatever they're called this week)/CPU's are going to be released in a few months. "They" don't make it easy to be sure... and I made it harder by jumping on the 165 DC Opty - which is proving to be a sweet CPU for $325 that's proving to be able to do an easy 2.6Ghz day in & day out. I'm definitely not to keen to "put it out to pasture" anytime soon.
But I want a video upgrade from this frakking AGP 6800 "Vanilla"! @#$% it! I was getting acceptable performance for a while with the unlocked hardware, but 128mb of VRAM just doesn't hack it, I'm afraid.
I'm not quite sold on SLI in my case as my 19" monitior isn't sufficiently large enough to take advantage of the resolutions where SLI really starts to shine. Of course I'm open to suggestions... Just make them like it was your own money. I'm not an "uber gamer" but I like a decent FPS too.
    Options -
    1) Keep present setup, which otherwise works great & get a 7800GS of this flavor - to tide me over until the "beta-testing" of M2 is over in about a year or so.
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814130272
The price vs performance compared to a PCI-e 7800GT kinda bugs me, but at least the $ is coming down somewhat & you can OC the snot out of it to the point that I don't feel quite as violated....
Cost - ~$320. Pros - Cheapest upfront. Cons - Dead End upgrade path. 7800GS is likely as good as AGP will ever get.
    2) Buy new PCI-e mobo/7800GT & PSU (because current one lacks the proper plugs). For an MSI board, the Diamond Plus seems to me to be the only real option. Even though it might be overkill. The rest of the present line doesn't "do it" for me, as I like to OC without a undue hassle.
Cost - around $600. Pros - Opty & RAM can make the trip this time, still graphic upgrade potential. Cons - Will need new CPU, RAM and mobo to upgrade to M2 when the time comes. Which will cost approx another $500-600.
    Decisions, decisions!

  • Is it really possible to upgrade from a Treo 650 to a Treo 750?

I am not a very happy customer at the moment, but any help would be greatly appreciated. I upgraded from my old Palm Tungsten to a Zire, then to a Cingular Treo 650, combining three devices into one. I have since discovered that the Treo 650 seems to have a faulty transmission mode, as I can rarely be clearly understood by whomever I call. Am on the second (or third, I have lost track) and continue to have the same problem. I get five bars of reception but can't be understood on the other end. A bit of a problem when one is trying to call 911. Am constantly told I am "breaking up". The repair shop says it "Can't duplicate the problem". OK, then I do not want to give up all the info I have stored in the fool thing, and the 750 seems to have a different system, so I thought I would try that. All the stuff I could find seemed to indicate it wouldn't be a problem to upgrade. When the 750 arrived, I tried to install the software from the CD on my Windows XP computer. No dice. Setup encounters an error and closes. Can't even look at the files, because setup tries to run any time I access the CD. From any drive.  Gave it to my girlfiend to check on her computer, and the CD seemed to run fine. Other CDs work just fine on my computer. Must be some kind of conflict, but what? Tried calling the AT&T number that suggested they could help with setup, and was first connected to the business center, they routed me to the laptop center, who routed me to the network center, who said they would have to bring in the Palm customer service and connected me to a Mac guy that dumped me back to a menu that took me to someone for whom English is a second language with whom I was trying to communicate over a very poor satellite connection. They made no sense anyway. telling me first that I couldn't have two desktops running (wrong, my girlfriend has my old Zire and the CD worked fine) and then insisting that the serial number on my device had to start with a P, when it clearly does not have any alpha characters in it. Gave up on that route of assistance. Managed to get the new ActiveSync installed from my girlfriends computer over the network. Great. Now let's get my 650 synced with Outlook (which I have not used at home) and see if we can move on. Nope. First I have to update Outlook 2000 from the old Win98 to my current XP. Find the old CD, and square that away. OK, now sync to Outlook. Nope. The sync program gives an error, saying it will only sync with Outlook 98, 2000, and XP(2002). Good grief. I have Outlook 2000, and the software apparently does not recognize it. If the Palm doesn't work, there is no reason for me to keep this phone, and I am very close to returning it and abandoning the Palm entirely when I upgrade to something that works, although I dread re-entering all that information.

Thanks for the feedback. Today I installed an Enterprise version of Office 2007 I purchased a while back, but had not yet installed. Microsoft presented a few challenges, but they were quickly resolved. I then downloaded the appropriate conduit from Palm, and synced the 650 with the handheld overwriting the computer. Then used Active Destop to sync the 750. Satisfied I had moved as much info as possible, I called AT&T and had them move the phone number to the new Treo.
Bonus! When the guy at AT&T called me on the new phone to verify it, he said it sounded better than my landline.
Sorry for the streaming paragraph. When it is late I tend to write like I think.

I upgraded from iPhone 3GS to iPhone 6.  Everything converted fine.  Yesterday I deleted an app in error.  When I downloaded the software it from iTunes ( did this many times on the old 3GS), my account is no longer recognized by the app's host servers (Playtika), even though it did after the initial conversion.  Can I go back and re-sync just one app from my old phone?

Try deleting what is called the iPod Photo Cache.
