G4 Sawtooth No video!

So last year, we bought a Sawtooth for my teacher's Mother, it is a 400MHZ (i'm pretty sure, with like 320? MB of RAM) anyway, it worked great, and we left it over the summer, and he said he would give it to her, anyway, my brothers laptop (ibook g4) died on him (logic board issue) so my teacher told me he wasn't going to give the computer to his mom, so i got it. I brought it home, and plugged it in, just a monitor (compaq flat panel) a Keyboard (dell USB) and a mouse (Microsoft USB). Thats it, and when we turn it on, theres no video output, and also no chime, which we may have turned the volume off. Any ideas?

If the Mac sat unplugged for several months and it was used to begin with, there's a high probability that the backup battery for the clock, NVRAM, etc is so discharged that it is barely working. Your "no chime" statement was critical here and I'm glad you noticed that and put it in your post. Look around in this discussion area about the G4, there are several threads discussing the battery and how to test, etc and get your Mac powered up properly so that everything, including the video, is working. TAGS would be battery, NVRAM, PMU, CUDA, PRAM and things like that. A new battery should be less than $7, unless you go to Radio Shaft or other overpriced place. BTW, good job also on stating the type of Mac, ram, keyboard, mouse, etc. That helps greatly.

  • Sawtooth AGP Video Limitations ???

I have one of the last of the Sawtooth models, a 500 MHz tower with the Rage 128 "Pro" 2X AGP video card in it. I would like to upgrade the video. I picked up a NVIDIA Apple G4Force4 32MB AGP Video Card with a VGA port today on eBay. I suspect that it is 4X, but info about this card is non-existant on the internet. Will this computer see more than 16 Megs of VRAM ??? Can these Sawteeth AGP models benefit from AGP upgrades ???

    Well, Guess what?
The card advertised on eBay as a 32-meg nVidia GeForce4 turned out to be something quite else.
I got it yesterday and installed it.
It reads in the System Profiler as a nVidia GeForce4 MX AGP with 64 megs of VRAM and it works perfectly. It has VGA and ADC outputs and from what I can find on the internet I guess it must have come out of a 2002 Quicksilver.
    Thanks to all.

  • Sawtooth KP on video files

I have this old mac setup for my folks to view some video.
Lately this mac has been giving me Kernel Panic whenever I try to view any view with Quictime/VLC.
The apps will either quit itself or KP the system. Here's my log:

The mac is stock spec 400Mhz Sawtooth. With added RAM all are PC133. Just re-install 10.4.6, still the same panic.

The G4 is running at the following spec:
    400Mhz
    RevB logicboard
    768MB SDRAM (all 2x 128MB + 2x 256MB)
    20GB ATA HDD
    ATI Rage 128PRO / ATI 9800 Pro
USB Apple Pro keyboard & USB mouse
    No extra card/airport/dongle attached
The mac will crash whenever I play .avi (any file). It started fine but won't play over 5min. Since I did not get much reply, I went ahead and try to figure out what's wrong. At first I suspect the 9800 Pro is giving me the problem, since it's a flashed card. Then I replace it with the stock card, which was working fine all the while. Then I suspect might be my OS system corrupted or somewhere went wrong. Done a clean install back to 10.4.6. Still the same result. And then finally I found a suspect. The USB mouse. When I unpluged it, the mac ran just fine. I need to further test it few more days to ensure it's the mouse before plug my 9800 back to the mac.
    Thanks for your reply.

  • Upgrading G4, 400 MHz Sawtooth Video Card

I know this has been addressed but I can't find the answer to this question:
    I have a 400Mhz G4 Sawtooth
    20" Cinema Display
I want to buy a video card that supports latest OSX iMovie, Quick Time etc...
    What do I buy?

The reason I need a new graphics card is so I can use iMovie and Quicktime, on my computer in iTunes movies do not work at all (Yes, I have the latest edition of Quicktime Pro)
The latest OSX (Tiger) has included things within its iMovie rendering software which simply will not work unless you have a Quartz Extreme compatible graphics card - These include: Themes, Ken Burns Photos and Video FX. Believe me, the problems that countless people are having with the latest versions of iMovie are most likely caused by not having this Quartz Extreme Compatible card.
Since I use iMovie a lot and have a need to view certain graphics and movies on my display while trying to render them - My computer, as it is, has become obsolete.
I knew this day would come - It always does - I just do not have the money, right now, to buy a new Mac.
I also know that the Intel Core Due is going to be upgraded to a much faster processor - the recently released Intel Quad processor is on the table as Apple's new "Must Have" upgrade... I also know, from experience, that soon after the Christmas rush of buying Apple products is over, What was the latest & greatest is suddenly obsolete.
Thank you for all of your help.

  • Sawtooth problem with playing video

    Hi
    My sawtooth is freezing up.
Usually the freeze occurs when I am playing a video.
the screen freezes and the audio skips repeatedly over and over.
This does not happen all of the time but it does occur frequently. I took it to an apple store and was able to reinstall the system software (not a clean install) but it did not make difference. Otherwise the machine works fine.
    any advice is appreciated.

Do you mean streaming internet videos or DVD videos? In spite of the faster 1.4 GHz G4 processor you have installed, your Sawtooth suffers from the same hardware limitations of other computers built at that time. The 100 MHz system bus speed, DRAM memory (as opposed to DDR memory), and a 2x AGP graphics bus all contribute to choppy video viewing. The original graphics card that you still have installed has a very small 16 MBs of SGRAM, which can easily choke on video playback. You'd definitely benefit from a faster/newer graphics card with DDR memory. If you search the G4 Expansion Forum for "graphics card," you'll find numerous topics and recommended/compatible cards.

  • Cheapest video card for dual monitors on a G4 Sawtooth

    Hi guys,
What would be my cheapest alternative to get a dual monitor (extended desktop) environnement with my G4 Sawtooth. This is an AGP G4.
Can I get a cheap video card with one outlet and then plus each monitor in one card (ie: 1 in the new card and 1 in the old one) ?
Or do I need to buy a card that supports 2 monitors?
I would like to spend as little as possible. I currently have the ATI 16 mb card that came with the system and I run both OS 9.2.2 and OS 10.3.9
    Thans for your advice,
    xenakis

Yesterday I installed a nVidia GeForce4 MX AGP out of a 2002 Quicksilver tower into my own AGP Sawtooth.
It has VGA and ADC connections and can apparently support two monitors at the same time.
My second vidio card is a MPDD card, but I may pull that now that I have a dual-monitor card. Sonnet sells something similar. They have blue & yellow connectors. These things are not high performance but they are OK to use with just about every monitor on the planet and any MacOS from 7.1 to 10.5 and beyond.
Cheap on eBay. Probably you could be even cheaper and pick up a 16-meg PCI card out of a B&W G3 tower.

  • G4 Sawtooth Video Playback Query

    Hello, Forum:
    I'm using a
    G4 Sawtooth/AGP 450mHz
    768MB RAM
ATI Radeon 8500 64MB graphics card in the AGP slot
    15" Samsung SyncMaster 570v monitor
When the factory ATI Rage 128 Pro card failed, I thought I'd get an improvement in my video performance with the Radeon 8500. That was not the case.
Whenever I watch an online video -- say, from youtube.com or cnn.com -- the video is always choppy and the audio not in sync. I am online via a cable modem, and I wait until the video is fully loaded, to no avail. My iPhone is better at playing youtube videos than my desktop!
That usually does not happen if I am viewing a .mov or .mpg that is on my hard drive, only if I am viewing video content from an online news source or youtube.
Is this a matter of upgrading the video card (say, a Radeon 9200 with 128MB), or is it another issue? I hate to buy a video card and not have the problem solved.
    Thanks to anyone with insight!

    Hi-
The main problems are CPU and RAM.
Increasing RAM would help some, but ultimately, the processor is the weakest link.
Adjusting your Quicktime/Streaming video settings to a longer delay may help a bit.
Increasing Quicktime/Browser cache setting may also help.
BTW, CNN video is not a good measure. The CNN video plays choppy even on fast machines.
It is a CNN server/software issue, not yours.
Compare CNN video to BBC video.

  • G4 Sawtooth Processor and Video Card upgrades

    Hi there,
I'm heading for a major upgrade on my G4 Sawtooth 500Hz, starting with processor and Video card, not to mention maxing out the RAM slots.
My main applications are Final Cut, After Effects and Photoshop.
I wish I had more money for a dual processor (or even a G5 – sigh!) so I'm looking at the Sonnet Encore/ST G4/1.4GHz Processor versus the PowerLogix G4/1.4GHz 7455A PowerForce55. I've done the benchmark tests at OWC's site and I'm inclined to Sonnet. Anyone have an opinion between these 2, or even if there's another one I should be also considering?
Should I make the effort and go for a dual processor? because of the clear benefits on rendering time (specially for After Effects)?
    Video Cards:
These I think I need more help. Going thru these threads I learned that I should consider the power supply (overheating problems) and that "AGP G4's have either a 208w or a 237w Power supply (PSU)" - I have no idea what I got.
On another thread I read: "as far as I'm aware, there are only two video cards currently available retail that support Tiger's core image/video, the Radeon 9600 and 9800. Unfortunately the 9600 requires a x4 AGP slot, so that just leaves the 9800. It's a powerful card but consequently is fairly expensive and can be noisy due to it's fan."
What is a x4 AGP slot? Do Sawtooths have this?
I'll be upgrading to Tiger soon. Does this mean I can't go for the ATI Radeon 9200?
I'd prefer AGP than PCI cards. What are my real options considering power consumption, OS and performance?
Important: I’d like the video card to run 2 monitors, LCD and/or CRT.
Further upgrades would be SATA controller card and one or two internal SATA drives replacing the ones I got.
    Last but not least:
Instead of all this fuss, should I 'just' get the MacMini 1.66GHz Intel Core Duo????? and later on get a G5 (or whatever it will be called...)?

I think I may have written what you've quoted. You probably already know, but you don't actually need a Core Image compatible card to use Tiger. As far as I'm aware, few applications currently make use of Core Image and fewer still actually require it (Apple's Aperture and Motion being possible exceptions).
As PB PM mentions, you have a x2 AGP slot and unfortunately there's little middle ground in terms of graphics cards available. The main options are the Radeon 9800 at one end (powerful but relatively expensive, power hungry, hot running and noisy) or perhaps the Radeon 9000 at the other. It's no longer available retail but they appear on eBay occasionally. It's an AGP card, was available in 64MB and 128MB versions and can support two monitors. One slight downside is that it has an ADC connector (alongside the VGA connector), which the Sawtooth logic board doesn't support, but I believe you can still connect an ADC to DVI adapter cable to connect a DVI monitor. It doesn't support Core Image either.

  • Upgraded Sawtooth 450Mhz AGP G4 video card to Radeon 9200

Just upgraded my video card to a Radeon 9200 Mac version yesterday, from the original Rage 128 card. The 21" CRT Apple Studio Display had finally gone "toes up" after 7 years and 9 months of 12 hours use each and every single day at my studio (minus Christmas and Easter). Man I loved that monitor. I replaced it with a 23" Apple Cinema Display. It is nice, but it is BRIGHT. I feel like I need sunglasses on sitting in front of it.
Anyway, everything went smooth with the upgrade yesterday, no problems. Then this morning, when I turned on the computer I was presented with a screen that reminded me of the windows "blue screen of death". My mouse arrow was on the screen and would move around, but my desktop icons and the Mac dock never popped up. Clicking with the mouse did nothing. Finally, after waiting 10 minutes I pushed the "reboot" button under the power button on the front of the tower and the system came up with no problems.
I changed nothing other than the video card and monitor yesterday. This scares me. Any ideas what caused this?

    Hi-
    Welcome to Discussions!
It would probably be best to boot from your OS install disc, and verify/repair the hard drive.
One other possibility would be improper/corrupt third part items, such as drivers. With Panther, does ATI have any drivers necessary for the 9200? It would be worth checking the version. The retail update may be needed:
    http://ati.amd.com/support/drivers/mac/jan2005updater.html
Yet another possibility is a startup item is causing the problem. Review the following for further instruction:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106464#symp1
As for the bright display, yeah, I keep mine turned down about half way. You can adjust using the button on the right side of the display, or in System Preferences/Displays, or, if you have a Pro keyboard, F14 to dim, F15 to increase brightness.

  • MDD video card into Sawtooth AGP?

Can I stick the original graphics card from a MDD G4 dual 1.0GHz (Radeon 9000 Pro Mac Edition) into a Sawtooth AGP400MHz?

It should work if the card's motherboard connection has 3 "teeth" (not counting the ADC connector, which is separate).

  • Video Card for G4 sawtooth

I just received an ATI 9600 pro Mac & PC card to run Motion with BUT the card does not fit my AGP slot or any pci slot.
I'm thinking I have the earliest version sawtooth that maybe has an AGP 2 Slot? I know that when I looked up the UNI # to see if I could upgrade to dual processors (via SOnnet instructions) it came up with 00003 - the only number that could NOT be upgraded. It was originally a 400 mhz.
So, could someone please advise which card (if any) will fit into my G4 that will run with Motion? Hopfully not a bank buster.
    Thanks for any help.
    Ken
    G4 1.2Ghz 1.28Gram   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Please keep in mind that this card is an 'update' to the 9800 Pro that you mistook it for (the original card for G4s was indeed only 4x compatible). ATI merged the G4 and G5 variants into the card I linked to above. Barefeats.com has a review of it here.
Of course, like I said earlier, in case it doesn't fit in your machine (entirely possible), you just might be out of luck, as I'm not aware of any other G4-compatible (never mind Sawtooth compatible) card out there.

  • No video and no bong on sawtooth.

I recently got my old powermac g4 out of the closet. It was sitting their since May. I hooked it up, pressed the power button and, no bong or no video. I switchted out the ram with sticks that work ( I got it out of another pc-100 machine) and still nothing. So its not the ram... I have no idea what to do. I wanna get this thing running so I can turn it into an iTunes server.

The first thing you need to do is replace the internal memory battery, which has discharged while being unplugged from AC power. Check this site for battery part numbers and sources. Mac PRAM, NVRAM, CUDA/PMU & Battery Tutorial

  • New video card from ATI

    Hello,
Its been a long time since I have been on the discussions board for the G4 powermacs. I have currently my G4 powermac powerPC Digital Audio 733mhz/1MB L3 cache. I have an AGP ATI 7000 radeon which is 64MB. I was wondering, because I was browsing through ATI and they have a 512MB video card option for Macs.
My question is can this card work in G4's? Not that I am into any hard core gaming, just wanting a low cost solution for seeing what core image looks like on my G4 through Tiger.
    Thanks,
    Nadav

    Hi-
    No.
The best that you can do is an ATI Radeon 9800 Pro Mac (256mb).
Other options are a flashed PC version of the 9800 (128mb).

  • Apple DVI to Video adapter M9267G/A and extension cable

Will the Apple DVI to Video adapter M9267G/A work with this cable?
    http://shop.vendio.com/dcables/item/899653106/?s=1181815202
Also, is it safe to "hot plug" the adapter, or should I only plug it in when the Mac is off?
I bought the adapter used with no documentation, and couldn't find any setup instructions on Apple's downloads page.
    Thank you.

    Hi-
So you're trying to extend the reach of the adapter? Closer to TV, VCR, etc.?
Seems like it should work, though I would personally get a long S-video/composite cable. Cheaply constructed DVI extensions can cause a loss of signal strength, and/or pick up RFI and result in poor performance.
It would be safe to hot plug the adapter itself, though I would not power on the attached devices until after connected to the adapter.

  • How do I set up my old G3 PBs and a Sawtooth?

My Wallstreet 233 had sat on my shelf for the last 5 years after I had thought that the Power Manager had burned due to a faulty adapter output. I recently got an old 266 which had an original apple mains adapter, and lo and behold the old PB came alive. After 5 years gathering dust, I've now 2 working Wallstreets with one working ac adapter and, after a quick battery reset, 2 batteries with 3 hours charge each.
Then, a week later I was given a 500mhz Sawtooth. So now I have 2PBs and a PMac.
I've got them up and running on 10.2.8
What will the best way of setting up these at home? I want to use the 266PB for internet (browsing, blogging, skype, itunes and limewire), I'm happy to use PB233 for ms office and as disk backup that may boot up other PB. I want to update PMac for video editing, graphics and playing movies. I have Maxtor to backup PMac.
Can I boot up one pb using another pb's hdd? Is SCSI the only way to do this?
I also want to network all these machines, preferably wlan. What's simplest way of doing this?
BTW I have a LaCie USB2/FW Combo PC card which has a 12V power socket, sadly I don't have power switcher. There's no record of it on LaCie's site and it's CD only mentions Orange Micro which has proved futile. When inserted into PC Card slot it appears on menu bar - "vendor unknown" and "host controller" greyed out and eject disk in bold. When I connect disgo usb it flashes but doesn't mount. I've checked on disk utility and it shows disk not mounted, but apple profiler doesn't show anything different. Is this correct?

Full excerpt (it's long sorry) of Installation guide on LaCie CD for Combo USB/FW PC Card reads:
    Installing USB Drivers
USB 2.0 Hi-Speed support is available on MAC OS X. When running on the OS X system, USB
2.0 Hi-Speed will have a data transfer rate of 480 Mbits/s. When running on the OS 8.6 and OS 9
USB will have data transfer rate of up to 12 Mbits/s.
Users can connect USB and USB 2.0 Hi-Speed peripherals to a USB 2.0 Hi-Speed port. The
current USB peripherals will continue to have a data transfer rate of 12 Mbits/s while USB 2.0 Hi-
Speed peripherals will have a data transfer rate of 480 Mbits/s if Mac OS X is currently running.
NOTE: Mac OS 9.1 and Mac OS X come with USB 1.1 support preinstalled and it is not
necessary to download and install Apple USB drivers.
    Mac OS X users
After the USB 2.0 card is installed, log into Mac OS X with a username and password that has
    administrative access.
    Download the OrangeUSBInstaller from: (http://www.orangemicro.com/updateusb2mac.html)
    • Double click on OrangeUSBInstaller.pkg icon
    • If the installer displays the message “Administrative access is required to
continue”, click on the Lock icon.
    • You will then be prompted to enter the administrator password. If the account
you are using does not have administrative access, you must enter the username
and password for an account that does or you will NOT be able to install
    OrangeUSB EHCI support!
    • If you have administrative access, the
    “Welcome to the OrangeUSB Drivers
Installer” window will appear. Click on the
    Continue button.
    • The “Select a Destination” dialog (Fig. 2)
will appear. Select the active Mac OS X
    system drive, then click “Continue”.
    Figure 1
    • The “Easy Install” dialog will appear. Click
on the “Install” button to install OrangeUSB
    Drivers.
    • Click on the ”Restart” button to finish the
    installation, when prompted.

Finalizing USB 2.0 Hi-Speed hardware settings
USB 2.0 Hi-Speed products that use an NEC chipset have 3 USB host controller engines on
board. Two of the host controller engines handle USB 1.1 transactions. One of the host
controllers engines handle, USB 2.0 transactions.
USB data traffic is automatically routed to the proper host controller engine depending on the
speed of the device that is plugged into the USB port. This essentially creates 3 concurrent USB
buses. These USB buses allow devices to run in a less congested traffic environment. This helps
devices such as color printers, scanners, video cameras and mass storage devices, which
require a high bandwidth, to work well together.
The NEC PCI to USB Enhanced Host Controller driver handles USB 2.0 Hi-Speed (480 Mbits/s)
traffic. The two NEC PCI to USB Open Host Controllers handle Full-Speed (12 Mb/s) and Low-
    Speed (1.5 Mb/s) traffic.
Confirm proper installation of USB 2.0 Hi-Speed driver:
Verify the “OMI_EHCI.kext” Extension is located in the Mac OS X /System/Library/Extensions/
    directory.
Verify the USB 2.0 Host Controller is detected:
Open the Apple System Profiler located in the Mac OS X /Applications/Utilities folder. Then click
on the “Devices and Volumes” tab.
In the example below slot B1 contains two “pci12ee, 7000” entries and one “pci12ee, 7001” entry.
The “pci12ee, 7000” represents the two NEC PCI to USB Open Host Controllers and the
“pci12ee, 7001” represents the one NEC PCI to USB Enhanced Host Controller.
If all three appear, the USB 2.0 Host Controller has been detected.
Congratulations! Your Macintosh is now ready to use your FireWire and USB devices. To install
a specific FireWire or USB device, please consult your device manufacturer’s documentation.
    Troubleshooting USB
    Problem:
I plug in a USB device and the Mac OS X system freezes.
    Solution:
On beige G3 Macintosh computers, Mac OS X may attempt to load the built-in USB OHCI drivers
for the EHCI controller. Orange Micro has worked out a patch to solve this problem. It is located
on the OrangeUSB Installer CD in the G3 USB 2.0 Patch folder.
    Problem:
I have a pre-G3 Power Macintosh computer, an OrangeUSB and the USB drivers seem to be
installed properly but I cannot get any devices to work. Why?
    Solution:
The OrangeUSB PCI board is compatible with the Macintosh All-in-one G3, Power Macintosh
Beige G3 rev. B or later, Power Macintosh Blue & White G3, and Power Macintosh G4 series
computers. There is an incompatibility between the OrangeUSB 2.0 PCI board and all other PCI
based Macintosh computers. The OrangeLink+ USB 2.0/FireWire PCI board does function in pre-
G3 Power Macs so you may consider using it in place of the OrangeUSB 2.0 card.
    Problem:
How can I tell if my Power Macintosh Beige G3 is rev. B or later?
Use the Apple System Profiler, located in the Apple menu, to help determine which logic board
revision you have. Open Apple System Profiler, click the System Profile tab within the window,
and then look at the Production Information section. Compare it to the table below to determine
which revision of the logic board is in your Power Macintosh G3 (platinum) computer.
    ROM Logic Board
    Versions Revision
    $77D.40F2 revision A
    $77D.45F1 revision B
    $77D.45F2 revision C.
    Problem:
What PCI based Power Macintosh Computers are NOT compatible with the OrangeUSB PCI
    board?
    Solution:
    Power Macintosh 54xx, 55xx, 64xx, 65xx, 72xx, 73xx, 7500, 85xx, 86xx, 95xx, 96xx, Twentieth
Anniversary Macintosh, Power Macintosh G3 Beige rev A and all Macintosh clones.

Now it is probably clear that LaCie pc card is NEC chipset based on clone of orangemicro. Now I have googled the OMI_EHCI driver and found that it is fine up to and including 10.2.6 but 10.2.8 may behave strangely. I guess it must not be liked by native apple usb driver.
