G4 screen on an ibook g3?

Hey everyone. I have a strange question. I own A iBook G3 (800mhz) The screen finally died on it. I was wondering if there is any possiable way to take a iBook G4 (1.25ghz)screen and color match the wires to make the G4 screen work with my G3? sorry for the confusion, its the best way I can discribe it. Thanks guys

Hey jh,
Well off the top of my head I'm likely to agree with Rhonda on this one. Just looking at the cables the LVDS cable actually looks identical. If that was different it would be very difficult to color match that cable. It's a ribbon type and the connector would be nearly impossible to mod.
The inverter cable connector looks very different however. Not sure about matching colors however since these don't usually translate from G3 to G4.
Now more importantly what exactly failed in your iBook G3?
So it boots and works via an external display?
If the display fails it's usually the inverter or inverter cable. The display is dark? Check w/ a flashlight, usually through the Apple in the back. See anything?
Yes? Inverter cable or inverter board.
No? LVDS cable, GPU.

  • Full screen video crashes iBooks

just updated iPad 2 to iOS6.
Now, when I play a video full screen within an iBook-Authored book viewed in iBooks, and then close the video, the entire ibooks display is offset about 50 pixels down from the top of the iPad (horizontally) and I cannot pinch to close a chapter or make the menu appear.
Other times, I can close the video but it disappears from its position in the layout until I play another video. Seems to be a refresh issue.

  • After upgrade to iOS 8.3 screen reader in iBooks crashes

It happened on my iPhone 4S and iPad Air today After an upgrade.
When in iBooks, screen reader reads the page on the screen, finishes reading the text, turns the page but gives up (crashes?) immediately after. the reader "toolbar" simply disappears.
Before the upgrade it would turn the page and continue reading. Not anymore.
google doesn't seem to know anything about this.
Can anyone else confirm the behaviour? I tried it on several PDFs - the same behaviour.

Your observation is right. I am facing the same issue after upgrading to iOS 8.3. The trial and error was common with Microsoft .. it seems Apple is catching up with MS .
I hope they address this issue quickly.

  • Screen black, but iBook still runs

I have had a white iBook G3 for over 5 years. I had just closed it and put it to sleep. When I opened it up not long after that, it seemed to wake up (breathing light went away), but the screen was all black. I restarted it and it booted up as normal, except the screen was black. But not pitch black; I could see the faint white box with OS 9 displayed. From all that I've read on here I probably have the inverter cable failure, or something along those lines...
I read something about PMU reset: is this safe to do (I don't want to lose anything if possible)? if there is no hope for a self-fix, any idea how much this repair costs? Where is a good place to go? I could go to an Apple store or Comp USA.

You could always attempt getting another used iBook with the same specs for $200-300 and then have the 2 to be able to switch things around with various parts. As I was trolling the web for used/refurbished iBooks, I found some great deals (non-ebay) and one was from a place (local to me), here in the SF bay area. Also, TigerDirect (where I got mine) has some of the 600MHz versions with 30GB hard drives and the rest of the basic specs (and Jaguar 1.2.8 pre-installed with NO disks), which comes with a year warranty through Joy Systems (a major company that does alot of the Refurbishing for other companies) for about the same price that I paid for my lesser iBook from them in August... They even have a $20-30 rebate on it I think until the end of the month... Oh well, no more 600MHZ model, but they do have the 500MHz with 30 GB HDD, 256MB RAM (I don't think that includes the built in 64MB as mine said 256 as well and it was actually 320MB total) etc and should also include an airport card, for $329.99 (same price I paid) and the $30 Mail-In Rebate offer good til 12/31/06 (which I did not get a chance to have). Just remember, you get iBook, the battery, the AC Adapter, and nothing else (pre-installed software only, no disks, no manuals). One year warranty (on a refurb) though can be hard to pass up...
I can't remember how to do the link behind a keyword, so here is the link to all Apple Refurbs from TigerDirect:
    http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/searchtools/item-Details.asp?EdpNo=23717 19&sku=J156-4060
As for the other place mentioned, that would be PowerBook Guy (from SF):
    http://www.powerbookguy.com/xcart/catalog/index.html
And they have all kinds of refurbished Mac Items (iBook G3, G4, Powerbook G4 Titanium and Aluminum, MacBook, MacBook Pro, plus older laptops) and they also have parts and I believe, do repairs too. Not all laptops listed will be available in stock (click on the model link and then "systems" to see what is available). Decent prices, I won't even bother with the G3 prices as you can get a 12inch iBook G4 *1 GHz* 512MB RAM 30GB HDD CD Drive (ROM only I think) with a minor case crack (if you don't mind that kind of thing), for $399.95 or same specs without case crack for $429.95... iBook G3 500MHz start at around $299.95.

  • External screen for my iBook

    Dear all forumers,
I am about to go to Canada to begin my university education, and realised that writting essays on my last generation iBook G4 12'', 1.33GHZ would be uncomfortable on the long term.
This is why I have come to you to see what my options are for plugging my iBook with the cable that was given to me when I bought my iBook. After reading the caracteristics (sp?) on apple.com, I read :
"Video mirroring supports VGA video out to an external display or projector (requires included Apple VGA Video Adapter) and S-video and composite video out to a TV or VCR (requires optional Apple Video Adapter, sold separately)."
I guess this is right, so technically the cable I have in my iBook box is the VGA Video Adapter.
Now my question is. What screens would you recommend?
Can I get wide screens or am I restricted to.. so to speak un-wide ones? How about the apple 20'' screen? 23''? Do they function with my iBook?
    How about the Dell 20''?
Any recommendations? Brand recommendations? My budget isn't worked out yet, but I suppose a couple hundred CAD$?
Also do screens like the Apple 20'' have dual voltage for America & Europe? I live in Switzerland but will be studying in Canada.
Thank you very much for your help,
    Sincerely Yours,
    Edouard

Also consider using a locally found CRT and not buying a second display
new; you could get by without the added expense and have a workable
solution to the smaller LCD in the computer.
I'd try an external Apple keyboard and mouse (not BT wireless, just USB)
    and buy a cheap monitor stand that has a keyboard drawer beneath it;
and either set the whole iBook up on there -- it may require some other
item under the iBook to raise it to proper eyelevel -- and use the iBook as
a desktop when not actually carrying it around. A powered USB hub can
help tie on a printer and the keyboard/mouse to the iBook when you use
it "docked" in a dorm or apartment; and you can take the iBook away when
you go elsewhere, and leave the keyboard/mouse, etc behind. I've tried this
and it works fairly well -- best without a second display.
Since the iBook series can't be run when closed, and using an external
display, keyboard and mouse, it takes up extra room when used with an
additional external display. That's the main problem; plus posture. I
prefer the desktop posture for longer use intervals and that is why I'd
recommend considering such an idea if it'd work for you, too.
In any event, good luck & happy computing!

  • ANY SCREEN WORK WITH IBOOK G4 14"?????????????

Hello, I have an iBook G4 14" mac os x 10.4.7. and i was wondering if the apple cinema displays would work with my iBook. I haven't really looked into this yet but I just wanted to post a comment and get some feed back. If they don't work is there any displays that are similiar tho the apple ones i could get. Or some wires to connnect them or I don't no just something. If i could i would like to be able to hook up to a bigger screen than my 14". thanks for all your feed back.

    Hello,
They are correct to say that the cinema display will not work with the ibook. You want to find any display with VGA input, and you DO NOT want to get a widescreen display for the ibook. The ibook is restricted to 640x480, 800x600, and 1024x768 resolutions and display mirroring. If you get a widescreen display, everything on the screen will be distorted so it is too wide. Screen Spanning Doctor can be used to disable these limitations in the firmware and allow extended desktop and additional resolutions, but if you use it and something happens to your laptop because of it, Apple won't cover it since your fiddling with the firmware caused the damage.
I would recommend getting a 17" or 19" lcd with VGA inputs. You can check over at Newegg, they usually have a lot of great deals. I am currently using a Viewsonic VA912b with my ibook and it is a great display.

  • Screen saver in ibook

When reading book in ibooks on my ipad, the screen will go dim like it is about to go black. How do I stop this from happening?
    Thanks

What one is it? the ones Apple supplies are:
    • Arabesque
    • Computer Name
    • Flurry
    • iTunes Artwork
    • RSS Visualizer
    • Shell
    • Spectrum
    • Word of the Day
Those should all be under the "Apple" category in the Screen Saver system preferences. Third-party ones should be in the "Other" category.

  • Have gray screen and unresponsive iBooks 2 program upon downloading Wilson textbook on life. No way to turn pages.  When using new York times app it shuts down and goes to home screens.

Loaded iBooks 2, downloaded e.o. Wilson textbook on life.  Opened book and only get gray screen without any way to turn pages.  As top menu does not appear cannot even switch to another book.  This occurred on 3rd time of trying to open book,   First two times would result in iPad switching back to home screen.  This last issue also happens when trying to open new york times app.

Shut down all programs that are running in the background.
    1. Double-click the Home button to see Apps in background
    2. Hold the Apps down for a second or two until you see the minu sign
    3. Tap the minus sign to close program
    4. Reset iPad. Hold the Sleep and Home button down for about 10 second until you see the Apple logo
Suggest you perform Step 1 to 3 at the end of every day.

  • Stuck at Darwin Screen HELP! iBook G4

The other day I was simultaneously burning a DVD and downloading a large file. The DVD burn was taking slower than usual but I thought nothing of it. However, I noticed that partway through the burn I was unable to use any of my applications (Firefox, iTunes, etc...). The burn completed and the DVD turned out fine, but I was still unable to use said applications. So I forced the iBook G4 to turn off by holding the power button down for 10 seconds.
    Here's where the problem started:
When I turned it back on I was stuck at the Darwin screen. I'm not really a computer guy and this was the first time I'd ever seen the screen. The screen read the following:
    "Darwin/BSD (michael-coughlins-ibook-g4.loca) (console)"
I can't do anything from here. I'm able to type in my user name and password, which changes thing a bit and says:
"Last login: Mon May 8 17:53:22 on console
    Welcome to Darwin!
    michael-coughlins-ibookg$:~ michaelcoughlin$"
    But nothing after that.
I've tried doing Disc Utility (inserted the disc and started the computer up while holding "C") with the installation disc and it said it fixed a "minor problem." But, I'm still stuck at the Darwin screen.
Any idea's on how to fix this?
I'm open to just reloading everything, but I'd desperately like to get all my iTunes files and a few old home video's of my family's recently deceased dog. When I'm using disc utility I was able to see my old files sometimes. It tells me that I've got 8 GB free of the original 60 GB (which should be correct).
If I can't fix it, is there a way to grab those files and then reload everything?
Many thanks in advance (especially to macjack who's been helping me so far)

You cannot use a Windows PC and try to back-up a Mac in FireWire Target Disk Mode. Windows PCs can't read Mac-formatted hard drives. (At least, not without some third party software.)
If you run an "Archive & Install", there is an option to select to preserve users and also network settings. As long as you enable that option your files & preferences should be just fine. This does not affect any software you may have installed. This will, of course, return your iBook to whichever version of Mac OS X is on your install disk. You may need to run the software update afterwards so you're up-to-date.

  • Blue Screen freeze on iBook G4?

I am posting kind of as a last resort considering the fact that it's going into a holiday weekend, so if I have to take it in it'll have to wait until next week.
Anyway I have a iBook G4 1.2 GHz, with 512MB RAM (256 internal, 256 user slot) with now a 100 GB hard drive. About a week ago I was using the computer in the afternoon around 3pm (everything seemed to operate normally), and when my wife went to use it that night around 9:30pm and it had frozen up. The mouse and keyboard wouldn't respond, so I reset using the power button. After the reboot it seemed OK for about 1-2 minutes then I got a kernel panic. So I rebooted again thinking that maybe a software update might be in order since it was Leopard at the time. The software update downloaded the software then froze upon installing the updates. At this point I was unable to get the computer to respond. I tried a Tiger disk, and the computer would not start from the disk. I also tried the usual things such as resetting PRAM, safe mode (didn't work) resetting the PMU, open firmware, verbose mode (freezes here too), single user mode (which didn't indicate any problems) I then hooked it up in Target Disk Mode on an iMac 800 f/p and was able to get access to the drive, so I zeroed out the drive attempting to clean out any residuals that may have been there. I reinstalled the OS via Disk Utility Restore, and Carbon Copy Cloner as I have an image of the computer on the iMac. All of which resulted in the same result booting to the blue screen and freezing. I then used the System Restore disk to see if that would work with no luck. However the Apple Hardware test did work, which ran successfully after 2 run throughs, but I could get nothing else to work. Reading through these forums and other places it seemed that it might be a RAM or Hard Drive issue. I removed the user RAM chip with no luck. So I thought a hard drive replacement might help so I spent several hours this past Sunday replacing the hard drive. Upon returning home I attempted to reinstall Tiger which it booted up the disk nicely and started the install. It got to installing the printer drivers and froze up during the HP drivers. Upon rebooting I was unable to get it to read the disk. After having the flu the past couple of days I attempted to tackle it again today, I was able to install Tiger via Target disk mode onto the computer from the iMac, and upon completion it booted up on the iMac screen beautifully and seemed to be working correctly. I then rebooted both computers, and the iBook froze on the blue screen again. I tried all the tricks again, and it didn't respond. I then reset the PMU and it booted up to the desktop with a message saying that the clock was reset. I shut down so that I could test the stability of the problem, and started it up again about 5 minutes later, and it logged right in and got the the desktop. Upon running Software Update the computer froze again, and I am unable to get it back to the desktop.
So my question is, any other ideas? Could it be the internal RAM chip? Could it be the logic board? Apple Hardware tests are still showing that everything is passing.
Just a quick recap of the steps that I have taken.
    Reset PRAM
    Reset PMU
    Attempted safe mode
    Single-user mode reported no errors
    Attempted verbose mode
    Tried TechTools Pro
    Tried DiskWarrior
    Zeroed out drive
    Reinstalled OS
    Attempted Software Restore from CD
Ran Apple Hardware Test (passing everything)
Replace 60GB hard drive with new 100GB drive
    Reinstalled OS
Reset PRAM/Single-user/Verbose/Safe/PMU again still getting frozen blue screen
Any help or insight would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Todd Ernst

    Hey Todd,
Sorry to hear your problems continue. All companies stop at board level replacement, we go a lot deeper here .
I was looking over your posts tonight, both here and at the bottom of that other thread. I'm beginning to think that you have a bad Mobility Radeon 9200. There is a known failure rate on this chip. I actually have a 1.2 GB 12" logic board with a bad reballed 9200. I shouldn't have reballed it because I could never get any video out of it especially with the shim repair. Luckily like I reported on that other thread this chip is used in a lot of GPUs. It's a ATI Mobility Radeon 9200 4x AGP. I think I have a list if you're interested.
I lucked out since I was trading with someone who had bought a 1.2 thinking it would work in his 1.33. It didn't so he traded it to me for a digital camera I had repaired. I dropped it in the 1.2 12" and ta dah! My wife uses that one now.
This might sound a little stupid, but when I put the logic board back in I didn't apply any thermal paste because there was no residue from a previous application .. pads stuck to the heatsink which I assumed were acting in place of the thermal paste.
One thing I did notice on these G4s is that those 2 mounting studs have failed on one iBook I worked on. That would result in a bad contact with the heat sink. Superior corrected this when he reballed it.
Also you're right those pads on the chips are thermal transfer pads. I think they're silicone based. The problem with paste is that it tends to thin out with heat and loose contact with the heat spreader. Here's what the manual says about those pads:
"Replacement Note: Any time the heatsink is removed or a replacement heatsink is
to be installed, make sure new thermal pads are applied in the following orientation:
    • Small rectangular pad at the upper end of the thermal plate
    • Largest pad in the middle of the thermal plate
    • Square, medium-sized pad at the lower end of the thermal plate"
eMail me if you want to read this for yourself.

  • Reboot only gives a blue screen on my iBook G4

Got MS Office for Xmas. Installed it and it worked fine. This a.m. I installed an update. While surfing the web my mouse froze - had to reboot while holding down command and ctrl.
Every time I did this I could work for a shorter and shorter period of time before the mouse would freeze again. Got out the manual and managed to get the install 1 disk into the drive.
Manual says "Choose Installer>Open disk utility ...etc.
I saw nothing called "Installer" so tried to look it up in spotlight - found it, clicked on it and the whole thing froze up again. As I have been trying various things , the computer allows me less and less time before it freezes up.
Now I am to the point of rebooting and most times getting only afrozen light blue screen, andsome times getting the desk top and then getting a glimpse of the Install Disk 1 contents and trying to find "Installer" Or "disk utility" I am allowed one or two mouse clicks and freeze up happens again.
As I write this on my PC I keep trying to reboot my MAC laptop using command ctrl and now for the last 4 reboots I only get the light blue screen. I think I'm dead in the H2O.
Got any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Option 1: put your original Mac OS install disk #1
into the CD drive and then shut down the computer.
press the power button, release it, and immediately
press and hold the C key. this will boot the
computer off the CD. after you click the language,
you'll see the install screen - don't install, go up
to the menu at the top and switch to Disk Utility.
select your hard drive and run a Disk Repair and a
Permissions Repair. Note any errors that appear when
you run the Disk Repair (don't bother noting anything
during the Permissions Repair). Quit and reboot your
    computer.
If that doesn't work - I'll reply with Option 2.
Well thanks for the tip on how to start from the installer disk. I was holding down "c" when I pushed the power button rather than hitting just after pushing power. I went thru the repair disk and permissions deal and got several things listed that were being checked in the repair disk list. The only one that came up red was "illegal name" I swear to God this is MY computer and not somebody elses, and the copy of MS Office was legal and official.
I restarted and got the dead blue screen again.
I restarted again using command ctrl and got to the desk top and was allowed 2 mouse clicks before the screen completely froze.
I tried restarting from the install disk 3 more times before I could make it work. I think it's kinda like double clicking a mouse - you have to hit the "c" key at just the right time. "repair disk" this time said I had no problems. "Repair permissions" changed a bunch of stuff so fast that I couldn't even read it.
Restarted again and now for 15 mins it has worked perfectly!!!
Thank you Oh Wise One! Now I have to go out and do somebody a favor to repay you! THANKS!!!

  • Appleworks6.2.9 "Save As" screen is too large for my iBook 14" screen

What can I do to make the Appleworks6 Save As screen fit my iBook 14" screen?
When I click the AppleWorks6 Save As, the screen is larger than my iBook screen. I can barely see the upper 1/8th of the Hide Extention, New Folder, Cancel and Save buttons. The resize button on the lower right edge of normal page is not visible. I can move the screen down and to the right and left but I cannot make the screen smaller because that button is beneath the bottom edge of my screen.
I also tried clicking the Green button at upper left corner of the page. Nothing happens. It just fills the whole screen and doen not get smaller.
I do not have this problem on my iMac 15" screen.

I hope you deleted more than just the com.apple.appleworks.plist. There are also 3 preference files in the AppleWorks folder that is in the same location as that .plist that need to be deleted all at the same time. All of this is detailed in my user tip, AppleWorks has stopped working correctly. Since I or someone else refer to this time a couple of times a day, it shouldn't have taken to page 8 to find it unless you were searching just for ".plist" & not preferences.
